Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack on a group of UNP parliamentarians who visited Hambantota Port and the Mattala Airport on the 17th of April.
Police spokesman Ajith Rohana says that the men were arrested after probing their direct involvement in the attack with the help of CCTV camera footage, other video footage and statements from eyewitnesses.
However, Hambantota Mayor Eraj Fernando has not been arrested by the police.

My hope is whether Rev. Sobitha Thero could convince JVP to join common opposition, since JVP AKD has already made clear signs that they would not join any coalition in the future.
And, as you say, I dont think RW would not move out, if the clear message of the nation will be passed to him – his only worry would be to pass the leadership to a right person. Right person is not Premadasa junior. As one who has closely studied the way Mr Wickramasinghe has been over the recent years, his inabliity be a dishonest person worsened the situation. Actually, it is all the country never had a born rascal kind of person as a the leader sofar. We had a variety of leaders, none of them were brutal, highly abusive as MR has been.
People ^s reactions to the current articles – with lack of comments make it very clear the interest of the general public. They mostly argue on other issues, but not about injustice and the indifference of the current administration. Being out of the country, even looking at the situation how UNP parliamentarians were attacked and the country^s leader being the minister of defence to stay away from taking any due action against the culprits – is highly abusive. Two people living in Moolatiyana Estate at Matara have been severely assaulted by thugs directed by an organizer of UPFA who had been enraged as the workers in the estate participated in the JVP demonstration and May rally without participating in the UPFA rally. One of the thugs that took part in the attack is an organizer of the SLFP estate union.
Bandusena Samaranayaka, the organizer, who is a purchasing officer of the Moolatiyana SLTB Depot, had gone to the Moolatiyana Estate in a SLTB bus to get the estate employees participated in the UPFA May rally. However, the employees had already left to participate in the JVP rally. Samaranayaka, the thug, had been enraged at this news, assaulted a person he had come across and attacked several houses in the area.
The victims had lodged a complaint (No. 43813) at Mawarala Police on the 2nd and when Samaranayaka, the thug, came to know about this, he had assaulted another person on the 3rd thinking he too had participated in the JVP rally. However, the victim had not participated in any rally.
The thugs had assaulted the two persons and attacked the houses saying, “This is our government. This is our police, don’t get caught making any complaints to the police. We don’t care for any laws.”
Another complaint (No. 30121) has been lodged at Mawarala Police regarding the second assault by the Matara Organizer of the All Ceylon Estate Workers’ Union Sinnasamy Alexander.

The Red May demonstration of the JVP commenced its march from S. de S Jayasinghe Grounds at Dehiwela and reached B.R.C. grounds at about 2.30 p.m. The public that lined the route the demonstration marched in large numbers expressed their appreciation and shouted encouragement in addition to treating demonstrators with refreshments and drinks.
The rally chaired by the President of All Ceylon Trade Union Federation Lal Kantha and participated by the Leader of the JVP Anura Dissanayaka, its General Secretary Tilvin Silva, the Member of the Political Bureau Somawansa Amarasinghe, Information Secretary Vijitha Herath and leaders of Farmers’, Fishermen’s, Women’s, Youths, students and artistes organizations is being held at present.
