Ranil’s Real Agenda Revealed

By Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

It was none other—and no less—than Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, who in an interesting article in the world press, provides us with the key phrase in understanding what’s going on in this country, how we came to be at this point, who benefits and who were probably involved, what the agenda is and where we are headed.   In a piece published in the Japan Times, he uses the phrase: “…resetting our strategic position in the world.” (‘Winning Sri Lanka’s Peace’, The Japan Times, April 8, 2015).

Note that Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, a shrewd man, is not talking about ‘re-balancing’, of ‘course correction’; of a shift in emphasis from the ham-fisted external relations of the second Rajapaksa term. He is not talking about tactics, but about strategic positioning; about re-setting our strategic position in the world. This is a fundamental shift from Sri Lanka’s traditional positioning deriving from the island’s history, geography and abiding sense of collective identity (what Dr. Kissinger calls “the character of nations”).

The problem with such re-setting of our strategic position is not one of ideological preference. It is a matter of Sri Lanka’s core national interest. Is that interest served by resetting our global strategic position; reorienting it towards the US-UK and India, with their influential Tamil lobbies and vote blocs? The most recent evidence yields a negative answer.

Prime Minister David Cameron made the following disclosure in his message for Sinhala and Tamil New Year:

“When I met with President Sirisena in Downing Street last month I offered my support for the steps his government has begun to take to address the issues of the past. But I was also clear that the Government must go further and that they must continue to offer full support to the ongoing UN investigation”.  (‘Sri Lanka Must Offer Full Support to the Ongoing UN Investigation’: David Cameron, Colombo Telegraph April 14, 2015)

We learn from this statement that:

  1. The UK isn’t willing to trade off the international inquiry for the domestic one that the new administration is hoping to embark upon
  2. The UK continues to support and push the UN inquiry
  3. It expects the new Sri Lankan Government to do so, over and beyond any domestic probe, and
  4. The new Sri Lankan government is already offering full support to that pernicious UN inquiry –hence Prime Minister Cameron’s phrase “they must continue to offer full support to the ongoing UN investigation”.

The question then is: is there a sell-out going on here that we don’t know about? Does President Sirisena know about it, or does he suspect it but doesn’t know it for sure, and it is being perpetrated by the Ranil-Mangala dispensation?

Ranil’s real threat perception

Completely unconcerned about any challenge from the SLFP – to the point that he doesn’t mention it—Ranil revealed his real threat perception in his Japan Times article: “…lest our people become discouraged and be tempted by the autocratic forces waiting in the wings to return to power in the coming parliamentary election.”

Stemming from his electoral threat perception, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe is telling blatant untruths—which he knows to be untruths– to the world media. He writes“…Sri Lanka’s military leaders honored their oaths and bravely rebuffed Rajapaksa’s unconstitutional order to annul the election and maintain him in power.” (‘Winning Sri Lanka’s Peace’, The Japan Times, April 8, 2015).

If there was such “unconstitutional order”, the Prime Minister should disclose the evidence in Parliament. Not only has the former army commander refuted the allegation in some detail in an interview given to a prominent newspaper (owned by the PM’s family), to which there has been no rebuttal, the Courts promptly dismissed the allegation against Mahinda Rajapaksa with regard to illegal orders and troop movements, when it was leveled by the radical-left FSP candidate Duminda Nagamuwa.

Author Taylor Dibbert, a Washington DC based critical analyst of the Rajapaksa dispensation writes a piece in The Diplomat, which reminds us of the reality that makes Ranil’s electoral scenario credible: “…Rajapaksa still won a majority of Sinhalese votes (the overwhelming ethnic majority in a country whose population exceeds 20 million)…”.

It is that “overwhelming ethnic majority” who form the natural, organic foundation of this island nation-state, whose vital interests will be jeopardized and will face an existential threat, if the global strategic re-setting and re-positioning envisaged by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe is allowed to succeed.

As was the case over centuries and even millennia, there is a force and fact that stands in the way of “re-setting of our strategic position in the world” as most recently projected by Ranil.

Mr. Wickremesinghe being far more intelligent than his political partner Chandrika, their supporters and their cosmopolitan civil society ideologues, has spotted the contemporary expression of that resistance and the probability of its resurgence.

This man’s top of the agenda for the day has been to attack Ranil W for no reasons, but making every efforts to show the other way around. Whether the senior boy at all sleep in his social room is questionable. Even on the very day – the most celebrate eating kewun kiribath for sinhala hindu new year, he seems to be busy with his regular mode of attacks being made to Ranil. Not Ranil any leader to go against the country is not thinkable, but to paint the picture in that way so that his GOD father most miserable of all times -Mahinda to return, this man DJ would even repeat go pants downs. It is really pathetic the way such an academic to fall to the level of Buruwanse when working on revengeful agendas turning white into black.

This is not a personal attack on Ranil, but a critique on his (and P.U.K Samaraweera’s) new foreign policy agenda and should be applauded.

Don’t sell the country. Just sell the Liars, Crooks, Robbers and Criminals.

Did you hear about the Cuban Boat Lift. Castro emptied his prison from the Liars, Crooks, Robbers and Criminals.

Send them back to India, Baharat, Dambadiva, Paradesh, where these Paradeshis, Paras originally came from,

“Families were reunited, creating an initial spurt of euphoria. But soon the Mariel boatlift spawned political problems for President Jimmy Carter. It turned out that some of the exiles had been released from Cuban jails and mental health facilities. Accordingly, some of them were shunted to refugee camps, while others, facing deportation hearings, were held in federal prisons. All in all, more than 1,700 exiles were jailed, and another 587 were detained until they could find sponsors.”

He wants to bring back the criminals and shut down the freedom.

    DJ,

“…Rajapaksa still won a majority of Sinhalese votes (the overwhelming ethnic majority in a country whose population exceeds 20 million)…”

Did Taylor Dibbert’s piece in The Diplomat, which you seem to hold in high regard, analyse how corrupt Rajapassa managed to gain majority of Sinhala votes? Black and white money in billions spent, utter perversion of state & private media, thuggery, blatant lies & propaganda that even included a Dummy Sirisena on state TV.

    Cheers!

PS: Beyond the above, I believe RW’s moves, especially in foreign policy must be scrutinized as a matter of grave public interest. Please continue that in good faith to the people. Not in loyalty to the ex-dictator.

They are just nationalists for their personal gains. Remember immediately most gentle of the all senior level politicians -Mr MY3 got elected by last election – Mahinda et al went on making public public public statements that MY3 was won because of tamil and Muslim voters, as if Tamils and Muslims are not Srilankens. But the bugger on his several visits made to Northern soils- to have repeated that we should all be considered as SRILANKENS, and he is the president for all the folks – etc should be not coming from his hearts. That is the greater difference between MAHINDA and other leaders. Even Hitlor and his supporters still do the same mistake calling that Germany belongs to Germans. But there are varied nationalities living in GERMANY and they are also considered as german passport holders and have got their voting rights too. So today if anybody would utter a single word falling the lines of Hitlor, German politicians have guts to react blitz schnell- immeidately as they can – even forcing the met to make a public appology. But in our country – rotten by Rajapakshe abusive principles- not many would even think about the gravity of the wording. That is the greater differnece between civilized and uncivlized societies.

“can. But this guy to fall to the level of Buruwanse – should definitely ”

Buruwansa, is not much different from the Other Modayas, Mootals and Fools who voted for Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The point has to be made that those those who voted for Mahinda Rajapaksa were, primarily,

        1. Modayas, Mootals and Fools

        2. Those who were ill informed.

        3. Those who lacked common sense.

        4. Those who beloved the lies of Rajapaksa and his cronies like Wimal Buruwansa, given below, who could not tell the truth from deception.
The Average IQ of those who voted for MR is around 65.

This man DJ has no shame and he does not want to see the criticisms the readers make on each of his articles. He really wants to hold the “Pandang” to his master MR whom he expects would come back if he keeps writing good about him and run down RW, Chandrika, etc. DJ tries his best to project MR is only hope for Sri Lanka and no others.

As repeatedly referred by any readers he pretends to be a great political scientist whilst he does not match even a man in the street on political knowledge. He is very blind to all the corruption and misuse by MR’s regime and perhaps in his political philosophy these corruptions are standard and acceptable.

He doesn’t understand or doesn’t like to accept that Ranil W is a most accepted and recognised politician with great experience. Unfortunately, in his management style he does not use “white vans” or “jungle laws” in handling opponents or culprits. This may look like a weakness on his part but he is emmersed in democratic principles and would not resort to cheap tactics of buying votes, deceiving voters, or blocking people’s voting power. These behaviours and practices by Ranil W may be irritations to DJ and cannot digest. Similarly Ranil W also knows DJ is total bluff.

Kelaniya Mervin was addressed with his Dr Title under the Rajapakshe, but today, his not even refered as Mervin… the very same will be the consequence for Dayan Google Mudianselage Buruwanse soon. Massa wahanne goma gode kiyala my granny told me several times – meaning housefly can often be seen in heaps of the cowdung.

The sensible suggestion made by a few contributors to this site that we totally ignore this Dayan Silva’s offerings hereafter and do not respond is to be admired. Also followed, if possible. If we ignore him, such action will eventually dry up his “popularity” on this website. It is possible the Colombo Telegraph gives him space based on the number of responses he receives, each time he provokes us with some unadulterated bilge.

The more this Silva irritates us and hence we respond, the more the website may think he generates interest in the readership and allows him even more space next time. Therefore the best thing is to ignore this man and his offerings fully.

To read him and respond would be to dignify him and his imaginings. I for one will neither read nor reply, hereafter.

DJ, you are a man of the world. you know what happened after NAZ-Germany was defeated by the Allies. They freed the Germans from the NAZI-reigns and they took the criminals and culprits of the Massacre to the Nuremberg tribunal. Eventhough there were a lot more Germans were supporting the NAZI-ideology they were not haunted and lots of brown filth hid themselves behind the “moderate” matel. But the Allies took up with the most filthy NAZIS. What would have happened if they allowed the Germans to arrest the NAZI culprits and bring them to books? Can you imagine it? if the Germans had the chance for this, Germany would still be a NAZI-nation and not a civilized, developed succesful nation with enormous influence in the world happenings. This was possible because the Germans were showed what actually happened under Hitler and what were they made to believe all the time since 1939 to 1945. The majority of the Germans are happy that they got rid of Hitler and his cohorts and they stay in the world with “erect spine” today. About your argument “defending the national sovereignty” is hiding behind the nationalistic and patriotic paroles to hide the misconduct of the past government. Do you really believe and would you really neutrally support a home grown solution which could work without your propagated majority and minority biased sensibility?
The big problem I see in you and and the so called singhala progresives / liberal is, it is you who define who is progressive and liberal and who not. Do you understand it is a subjective perception from a participant, which is masked by conflict of interest. We need a objective perception what went wrong without pulling the trigger and how remedy it. By all your writtings and arguments you lose the credibility to be neutral and has the capacity to help nation building. Under the line you are a racist not willing to give the minority the long deserved equal rights. I wish there is another Nuremberg tribune for people like you!

This was your interpretations to the very same manner Google Mudianselage Buruwanse misguided the nation – would not Rajapakshe be reelected – he would be executed in Hague for war crimes. Remember ?

Why then today under the lead of MY3, world is not even asking about the execution of Mahinda Rajapakshe ? So all you guys could interpreted issues in favour of Rajano. Even today, people across the country believed you guys but the mere truth is far from your narrations.

“It is that “overwhelming ethnic majority” who form the natural, organic foundation of this island nation-state, whose vital interests will be jeopardized and will face an existential threat, if the global strategic re-setting and re-positioning envisaged by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe is allowed to succeed.”

What you can read from the above discription? If you study the articles written by this blood thirsty converted Sinhala Christian since the removal of dictator Mahinda, he is very consistent in describing this island as a nation for Sinhalese only and Tamils and Muslims are not part of this island. The term he used to create the fear of Sinhalese is “existential threat”. It is the venom come from this dangerous creatue. According to him, Tamils and Sinhalese should be eradicated and eliminated from this island and they should not be given voting rights. He call all Sinhalese to join in the programme of Genocide of Tamils and Muslims lead by Mahinda Rajapakse and his companions like Wimal Weerawanse, Gotapaya, BBS and Vasudeva. His prescription is now very clear and future of minorities are in danger and face an existential threat?

We are righting wrong. We have invested in infra structure as RW proposed. We need markets. We need FDI and FTA with countries in Asia and the West. SAFTA has to be broadened. We have to have Market Reform and regulations. We must cahnge to exit. Our Garment Factories were closing. Foriegn Markets are closing. The infrastructure Bill repayments needed domstic savings , resheduling debt and Income genaration. Some of the old projects with poor payback has to be stoped. Money must be placed where there is a payback. Putting all the eggs in one basket wont do. Our stagic interest is to survive.
A domestic inquiry is needed. The general and Ms were involved inthe War. We were afraid to face a fair inquiry. But we wil stand for a proffesional forces that did no wrong. Having amertuer diplomats who only said yes and could not open markets and give a reply to the accusers did not help.

Thanks Dayan, for trying to enlighten our Sinhala Buddhist Elite .

I don’t think they read Japan Times or even Indian Times.

You are right on the money, when you say the US wants Srilanka to be a base when Uncle Sam takes on the Dragon in time to come,

Cameron and Milliband obviously will be the lap dogs who will be barking plus trying to do a bit of biting too.If they are still around.

But what our Modi forces going to do is a mystery, when half the population there are still on dollar a day list.

Anyway, these Western strategies are too complicated for our Sinhala Urumaya and Jathika Liberation Peramuna brothers to understand..

They are only interested in increasing their free loaders in Parliament.

And have bigger fish to fry like our Gota and his Bro who stopped our Country going in the direction which Ranil and Cousin are now taking , under the guidance of Cameron and US .

Although 58 Lakhs of our poor rural Sinhala Buddhists rejected Ranil and his scheming to destroy our 2500 year old nation, the so called Urumaya protectors let them down big time.

Wonder whether Bo Tree Hugging Sinhala President understood what Cameron told him…

    • 2
      3

      K.A. Sumanasekera.

You say 58 Lakhs of our poor rural Buddhists rejected Ranil.

Yes they rejected Ranil due to MR duped, bribed and spread racist Sinhala Nationalism among them whose education and IQ is so low and they are vulnerable and easy to manipulate and Rajapakses mastered it very well during his 45 year Political carrier.

If those 58 Lakhs truly know the reality of how Rajapakses governed the country with all these mega illegal contracts and deals, I think less than half of them would have voted for him.

On the other hand Ranil is not playing duplicity and double game in politics. One way this is a weakness of Ranil to win votes where 70% of the voters are educated enough to understand Politics. Only now we have press freedom and the people are getting information first hand.

Bottom line is first We need politicians to understand both local and international politics to understand where we and the world stand. We are still a developing country and countries like us are vulnerable to Big Sharks in the ocean. So we need a lot of constant information, feedback and adjustments.

Second Sri Lanka will never improve as a nation by having an over burdened social welfare state where 70% of our GDP is spent on social welfare. By doing that we will never have funds left on Infrastructure, research, management and development work which is vital to competet with the present day world.

The bottom line is we have an excess manpower with less skills with very little funds utilized for R&D both in Agriculture, Engineering and Technology and health and medicine.

Rajapakses created a Bribery, commission and corruption oriented economy, even bribing the Buddhist monks to win 70% Sinhala votes and to stay in power. This system does not help our country at all. Today everybody including the small farmers and cattle owners are crying difficulty of carrying out their businesses. All our corporations are running at colossal losses to the economy.

That’s why need a strong all inclusive Private/ Public participation businesses ventures, research institutions and even a new Political culture.

Politically and economically Under educated, unqualified and under experienced One man shows running Sri Lanka politics will take the country to doom.

Dr.Dayan Jayatilleka with other Vibrant Professors should open his own Political Academy or publish News own newspaper for the next generation of Politicians, Ambassadors and the general public to gain and expose and to gain access to both local and International Politics.

    Mr Dayan Jatathillake.
Still for your stupid brain you dont understand who is shrewed. May be ranil is but you havent uttered a word about rajavassas stupidity and shrewdeness. MOst of the sri Lankans are biased. Same as you. Though you say that you are a doctor you aint. Intelligence having non biased opnion, you dont need education. Thats is call the wisdom. All you need is have a mentality to understand that all people are equal, there is so called human rights, there is a thing call the “LAW”.

  • 2
    1

“that “overwhelming ethnic majority” who form the natural, organic foundation of this island nation-state” are in deep sh_t today because idiots like you have led them away from the centers of human civilization, the commitment to the doctrine of human rights, the policy of non alignment, the rule of law and government by process to the peripheries governed by personalities who seek no more than the satisfaction of their own greed and that of those who share their communal identities.

I do not know what Ranil means by his resetting or what his vision for Sri Lanka is BUT the one thing that I am certain is that he does not stand for governance by the greed of personalities.

You will of course hang onto the tail of whichever side you think is going to come out on top and your bet at the moment is that the majority will support a return to governance by greed.

  • 3

Really appreciate your work Dayan. it seems the vast majority who come here expecting items written in favor of separatism are upset to see such profound arguments coming in favor of national movement. If you read the comments you see they lack content. people are just angry to admit the truth.

We can have faith in the goodness of the people as 99% of the postings do not subscribe to the views of DJ.

Dayan Jayatilleke and Rajiva Wijesinghe are struggling with depression because they are non-entities in Sri Lankan politics.

It is not an easy situation to wake up to, every morning; when no one cares or wants their convoluted opinions and theories.

You and I, are the victims of their predicament. And, the CT editors are having fun, subjecting us to these opinions under the guise of press-freedom( which should apply to the media) or “the freedom of expression”, which the government they were part of, never respected. But, ne’er did they utter a word about it, when they were Ministers!!!

Whether we agree or disagree with DJ’s opinion, we must thank DJ for exposing Ranil’s agenda, which is detrimental to Sri Lanka’s future well being as a neutral nation in world affairs.
Even though blind followers of Ranil may abuse DJ, I hope and I believe, DJ will have the courage and energy to ignore these habitual mud-slingers and continue to play the role of a ‘watch dog’ at a time we have a lame duck President who is so ignorant and inexperienced he is being pulled around by his ear by this very cunning politician Ranil, ably supported by unpatriotic politicians like Mangala, Ravi, John and others. Chandrika is neither a match for Ranil, nor a suitable leader for the nation. Only suitable person to take the country forward at this moment is MR.

Ranil is demonstrating increasing signs of acting against Sri Lanka’s national interests. Those are acts of traitors. In fact that is the very definition of treacherous acts. Ranil needs to be stopped. I don’t disagree with him regarding the need to clean up Sri Lanka and have good governance, etc. But, in a globalized world, a nation’s strategic position is fundamental to a country’s future. Ranil seems to be playing with SL’s future due to his colonial mentality of inferiority towards whites. I am not sure who is giving thumbs down to Dayan Jayatilaka, but I can only imagine that they are Tiger supporters.

    Yes Dayan,

Ranil wants to re-sett the Parayaha international connections that you developed. From China and African nations that support dictators. So he is trying to undo the damage.

Why not migrate to one of those Paraya friendly nations ? and offer your services. You may have better luck there.

    Dear Mr. Jayatilleke

Are you also in the pay list of the former Crook MR ?
Do you agree that MR has robbed our mother land in Billions and also has mortgaged the country to the Chinese. MR has left the mess for the next generations to sort out.

Mahinda Rajapakse was corrupt. IF he comes to powe the same gang of thieves will start stealing again.

Ranil Wickramasinghe won’t be at least a bit good leader for Sri lanka and Ranil Wickramsinghe govt must be defeated.

There should be an alternative third force to contest against both these Ranil wickramsinghe and Mahinda Rajpakse parties.

    Dayan,
Everybody know that you were selected by President Premadasa for your family connections and your knowledge and writing skills to get his image publicised and accepted among the intellectuals. You were so drawn into your project of image building for the late President that you forgot the basic ethics of journalism and became a bootlicking promoter for President Premadasa. The country leaders thereafter who were aware of your way of life discarded you and avoided you like a plague so that they did not wanted to be regarded as promoters of dirty journalism. The last outgoing President Rajapakse saw an opportunity in you to build up his image among the citizens of this country to be looked upon as the saviour of the nation and a living king to rule his peasant population. You were amply rewarded for you efforts being made an advisor, a consular until the time you were forced by your associate intellectuals to accept the reality in the country and its walk towards a dictatorship by Rajapakse family mortgaging the country to the Chinese empire to satisfy their greed, lust and ego
When you admitted your mistakes trying to portray yourself as a genuine ambassador you were kicked out by the Rajapakse’s. While backing the anti Rajapakse movement you realised that the new regime did not want any part of you and thereafter joined the bring back MR bandwagon. Readers here know you have no love for the country but yourself, you a fading journalist is employing all dirty tactics and poor journalism to damage the integrity of new politicians and to be accepted again by MR if he ever came to power again.

Dayan tries every trick under the sun to create a rift between the PM and the president. Keep writing, people in Sri Lanka are more politically matured than Dayan.

At the height of your diplomatic trail you strongly requested MR not to Internationalize
the ethinic issue, to which MR came forward as remediable with home-grown solutions of
his. What happened? Now that we have to seek a solution which can be assisted by
only India-USA-UK etc.and UN. Ranil is seeking help where China & Russia cannot help.
There appears to be no alternative than follow 21st century democratic standards to
conclude the problem once and for all – and MS/RW Govt will do the utmost in this
    direction is my belief.
