Ranil’s Real Agenda Revealed

By Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

It was none other—and no less—than Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, who in an interesting article in the world press, provides us with the key phrase in understanding what’s going on in this country, how we came to be at this point, who benefits and who were probably involved, what the agenda is and where we are headed.   In a piece published in the Japan Times, he uses the phrase: “…resetting our strategic position in the world.” (‘Winning Sri Lanka’s Peace’, The Japan Times, April 8, 2015).

Note that Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, a shrewd man, is not talking about ‘re-balancing’, of ‘course correction’; of a shift in emphasis from the ham-fisted external relations of the second Rajapaksa term. He is not talking about tactics, but about strategic positioning; about re-setting our strategic position in the world. This is a fundamental shift from Sri Lanka’s traditional positioning deriving from the island’s history, geography and abiding sense of collective identity (what Dr. Kissinger calls “the character of nations”).

The problem with such re-setting of our strategic position is not one of ideological preference. It is a matter of Sri Lanka’s core national interest. Is that interest served by resetting our global strategic position; reorienting it towards the US-UK and India, with their influential Tamil lobbies and vote blocs? The most recent evidence yields a negative answer.

Prime Minister David Cameron made the following disclosure in his message for Sinhala and Tamil New Year:

“When I met with President Sirisena in Downing Street last month I offered my support for the steps his government has begun to take to address the issues of the past. But I was also clear that the Government must go further and that they must continue to offer full support to the ongoing UN investigation”.  (‘Sri Lanka Must Offer Full Support to the Ongoing UN Investigation’: David Cameron, Colombo Telegraph April 14, 2015)

We learn from this statement that:

  1. The UK isn’t willing to trade off the international inquiry for the domestic one that the new administration is hoping to embark upon
  2. The UK continues to support and push the UN inquiry
  3. It expects the new Sri Lankan Government to do so, over and beyond any domestic probe, and
  4. The new Sri Lankan government is already offering full support to that pernicious UN inquiry –hence Prime Minister Cameron’s phrase “they must continue to offer full support to the ongoing UN investigation”.

The question then is: is there a sell-out going on here that we don’t know about? Does President Sirisena know about it, or does he suspect it but doesn’t know it for sure, and it is being perpetrated by the Ranil-Mangala dispensation?

Ranil’s real threat perception

Completely unconcerned about any challenge from the SLFP – to the point that he doesn’t mention it—Ranil revealed his real threat perception in his Japan Times article: “…lest our people become discouraged and be tempted by the autocratic forces waiting in the wings to return to power in the coming parliamentary election.”

Stemming from his electoral threat perception, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe is telling blatant untruths—which he knows to be untruths– to the world media. He writes“…Sri Lanka’s military leaders honored their oaths and bravely rebuffed Rajapaksa’s unconstitutional order to annul the election and maintain him in power.” (‘Winning Sri Lanka’s Peace’, The Japan Times, April 8, 2015).

If there was such “unconstitutional order”, the Prime Minister should disclose the evidence in Parliament. Not only has the former army commander refuted the allegation in some detail in an interview given to a prominent newspaper (owned by the PM’s family), to which there has been no rebuttal, the Courts promptly dismissed the allegation against Mahinda Rajapaksa with regard to illegal orders and troop movements, when it was leveled by the radical-left FSP candidate Duminda Nagamuwa.

Author Taylor Dibbert, a Washington DC based critical analyst of the Rajapaksa dispensation writes a piece in The Diplomat, which reminds us of the reality that makes Ranil’s electoral scenario credible: “…Rajapaksa still won a majority of Sinhalese votes (the overwhelming ethnic majority in a country whose population exceeds 20 million)…”.

It is that “overwhelming ethnic majority” who form the natural, organic foundation of this island nation-state, whose vital interests will be jeopardized and will face an existential threat, if the global strategic re-setting and re-positioning envisaged by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe is allowed to succeed.

As was the case over centuries and even millennia, there is a force and fact that stands in the way of “re-setting of our strategic position in the world” as most recently projected by Ranil.

Mr. Wickremesinghe being far more intelligent than his political partner Chandrika, their supporters and their cosmopolitan civil society ideologues, has spotted the contemporary expression of that resistance and the probability of its resurgence.

Dayan, please don’t waste your time. Ranil is respected by the world and we need western support to develop and be ahead. Look how India is going to develop. Modi is very energetic and had successful visits to US, France, Germany etc. Airbus is going to set up a plant in India. Can we Sri Lankans keep fighting within ourselves and be left back in the race. If so, we will end up as another Rawanda or Bangaladesh. We are a shameful people – even after 67 years of independence we are still a developing country – no industrialisation, no excellence centers like MIT, IIT. The next 10 years will be very crucial – we have to reach Singapore, otherwise our people will have to get cooly jobs in India. Ranil has the background and connections – he must lead our development effort. It is because of you guys and Rajapaksas that our country remains corrupt and undeveloped. We need a Lee Kuan Yew to work at maximum speed to build infrastructure, industries, exports, educate our children with world class skills. Only then Sri Lanka passport and people will get respect worldwide. During your fathers days, people from neighbouring countries came as labour to Sri Lanka, now they are coming as CEOs and enterpreners. What went wrong in our policy and planning ?

For 20 years Ranil has remained there leader of UNP and done so by abolishing the party constitution unseen in any democracy in the world. This is a far cry from the UNP that was envisioned by the forefathers of the great party.Every challenge to his leadership was thwarted after each defeat at parliamentary and presidential election by eliminating or sidelining all talented potential leaders. He bacasme leader of the party because the other decent leaders of the party were assassinated by LTTE.
He is the only political leader who was targeted by LTTE.
He could not have done so without the tacit support from CIA, UK, and Norwaygnates and their lapdogs, the so called free press owned by a few magnates whose very survival is underwritten by the CIA and the neo-colonialst west.
You are also a lackey in the payroll of these forces and they have one foot in C
Read his new year message. It is evident that he by himself cannot even write a brief, meaningful communique in English. The press barons, the UNP controlled one man who was born and bred in Colombo 7 and lackeys of your ilk have one foot in Colombo and the other foot anywhere other than this country called Sri Lanka.

It is common knowledge that the former President (MR) presided at the top of the pyramid scheme of corruption. The second tier was controlled by his family, the third tier were all the corrupt politicians who used their influence to kow-tow to the every whim of MR & his family.

The first three tiers of this pyramid of corruption, compromised the lower tiers by fear or favour to do their bidding. In such a scenario they compromised the judiciary; the forces; businesses; diplomats; virtually every public servant was compromised in that they were forced to follow order received from the tiers above them in this pyramid of corruption. The were compromised by the “fear factor”.

This is the reason for the inordinate delay for taking all the crooks to task. The people who have been entrusted with bringing to task have also been compromised in one-way-or the other by the previous regime.

The current cabinet of Ministers comprise of many who have aided and abetted the rogue President – in the passing of the 18th amendment – without as much as a whimper.

Mr. D.J. too has been compromised – for fear or favour – and the only way he sees to hide his omissions and commissions is to bring the rogue back into power. Hence, his rhetoric against the current regime.

He states in this article that RW is a shrewd man – and DJ seems to have identified all the problems – so he says – making him as astute. Why then is he just shouting about the problems? If we are to take his selfies seriously, then he should be offering the solutions to ” GOOD GOVERNANCE “.

Come on DJ – the noise you are making – in this article – is your perception of what you read between the lines with respect to that article in the Japan Times – Why don’t you read the lines and see how you can contribute to the ” GOOD GOVERNANCE” instead of giving us half truths and full lies just to be able to save your skin – when your shit hits the fan !

This man Dayan has NO shame. ABSOLUTELY NO SHAME. He has been singing the same old (low life) song thinking that the People of SL are fools. MR was rejected by 6.2 million Srilankans. In fact even in 2005 MR lost the election if not for the help of the LTTE, who is bribed to the tune of billions to keep tamils from voting.

The bottom line is MR is probably the BIGGEST Crook in South asia today. He and his family has plundered BILLIONS. We saw the reports on Srilankan airlines, What his cousin in Russia did, and the countless corruption at institutions under MR. In addition to that MR protected Drug dealers, Murders and pedophiles. Its endless.

If Ranil is not suitable to be leader, then MR is DEFINITELY not suited to lead Srilanka. So please go shove it up ….. Dayan!!! We are not fools!!!

        gigurawa

“For those who consider Mecca, Vatican, or Tamil Nadu as their motherland truth is bitter.”

True, however lets look at other destination in
India, Bodh Gaya (Bihar), Sarnath (Uttar Pradesh), Sanchi (Madhya Pradesh), Ajanta (Maharashtra), Kapilavastu, Chudamani Vihara (Tamil Nadu), and

Lumbini (Nepal), Svayambhunath and Bodhnath (Nepal), ……….

Sinhala/Buddhists also visit these places hoping to attain Nibbana in addition to Hindu temples in South India.

Here is something you would have ignored but you shouldn’t have as the former High Commissioner Prasad to India very clearly state where Sinhala/Buddhists originated and where their loyalty lie and hoped to persuade the North Indians to understand their affinity with them.:

        The Telegraph
        March 29 , 2013

        Lanka plays Bengal card

        – Envoy links Sinhalese to eastern states, TN groups fume
        G.C. SHEKHAR

        Excerpts:

A claim by the Sri Lankan envoy that the Sinhalese are descendants of Odias and Bengalis and therefore deserve Indian support has angered Tamil Nadu groups who have accused him of trying to divide Indians and sought his expulsion.

“Today, India seems to be concerned only about the 12 per cent Tamil population in Sri Lanka who share ethnic links with Tamil Nadu. But Sinhalese too have similar but ancient links with Odisha and north India,” Prasad Kariyawasam, the Sri Lanka high commissioner to India, has said in a statement.

“It is believed that 75 per cent of the Sinhala race in Sri Lanka originated from in and around Kalinga (modern-day Odisha). Therefore, the people in Odisha and Bengal consider the Sinhala population in Sri Lanka as having its origins in India. The strong links that existed were torn asunder by Moghul and British invasion.”

        Excerpt

According to the Mahavamsa, an ancient chronicle of Sri Lanka’s kings written in Pali, a king from Singhapur in Rarh (southwest Bengal) named Vijaya sailed on eight ships to Sri Lanka with 700 of his people in 543 BC and established the kingdom of Sinhala. Legend describes the Sinhalese as descendants of Vijaya and his people, who would have lived in parts of today’s East Midnapore, close to Odisha.

Some scholars believe that today’s Singur — which changed Bengal’s political climate a few years ago — is where Singhapur was located and that Singur derives its name from that ancient town. The Mahavamsa mentions another town in Rarh called Banganagar.

        Excerpt

Bhaktiprasad Adhikari, who was an aide to former Bengal agriculture minister and Trinamul member Rabindranath Bhattacharya, has written a book, Singur Theke Singhal — Banglar Bismrita Adhyay (From Singur to Sinhala — A Forgotten Chapter of Bengal), which has articles on Vijaya. In Vijaya’s days, the people of Bengal had a reputation for seafaring and, according to legend, the Saraswati river flowed through the Singhapur area.

        Excerpt

Kariyawasam’s statement said: “In addition to ethnic links with Kalinga, the Sinhalese speak and write an Indo-Aryan language based on Sanskrit which is linked to Hindi, Odia and Bengali. India must be concerned about the rights of the Sinhalese too and must not allow Sinhala leaders to be isolated in India.”

Historian P.S. Dwivedi, former head of history at St Stephen’s College, confirmed that the Sinhala language belonged to the Indo-Aryan family. “Going by the language, there is a likelihood that the Sinhalese would have migrated from India. But I have no information that they were originally from Odisha and Bengal,” he said.

The LIKE A FROG IN A WELL mentatlity is obsolete by this day. So please educate yourself and your kith and kin adequately so that we the nation have to change our attitudes if we ever wanne to achieve peace among the all folks. Take it peace is the stability for the prosperous nation. Focus on the countries like India, Malaysia and several other places where all walks of people smoothly get forward being harmonised to one another – they have though varied kind of barriers such as the langague and the religion. If we really understand our issues we must be very careful of using communal kind of explanations. THis is common to everywhere where multi ethnic people live.

Walburuwas of your kind could become millionaires if Meeharaka Rajapakshe had been reelected. I thannk you those wise voters – 6.2 mio of the island nation to have voted for a change. Today, [Edited out] have no chance even if Google Mudianselage Wimal Buruwanse is on and on mode to bring the man back as the PM candidate. Enough is enough – giving a chance to an another person instead should be next step but those who love for high profile abuses, want MR to be back in active politics. Wait and see, MY3 would never allow the idiot to get back – nor would his son or any other Rapakshe lead the nation again. Gone wer ethe day they could fool the nation. He is expert for wal meeharakas. As you are all aware how ITN functioned under the lead of Hudson until 8th Jan – I dont need explain more about that. DJ is as much as fool as his god father. God father only relied on Sumanadasa – who we heard has not the basic knowledge about the astrology but a mouth piece to tame Rajapakshe clans. Can you imagine ? Only gonthadiyas of the society are being decieved to the manner Rajapakshe has been. And ones that abuse almost all and sundry have to keep the faith on astrology. I have seen the kind of men keep going to any DEWALe, but we the people would not do the harm to anyone dont need to even seek that kind divine supports. While travelling across the globe, I get on with nice personalities – but the world is filled with the kind of DJs and Google Mudianselage Wimal Buruwanses. Their top of the agenda is their surivival by making the majorities fools.

Some people commenting here can not be Sri Lankan. Else, there parents must be born overseas. It is very clear that MR is the greatest leader Sri Lanka ever had. He done his very best to mother land. All the world know that westerners want destabilise Sri Lanka and help separatism and division among Tamils , Sinhalese and Muslims. That is how British ruled many countries over the centuries. UN & UNHCR are proxy agents for this cause. They will not help any country. It is evident by Iraq , Libya , Afganistan and other countries. MR is the only leader who can lead the country against foreign conspiracies. He is not a traitor like other people who elected as leaders in SL. He is real patriot to the country. Losing him , bad luck for Sri Lankan people and would be definite win for western conspirator who wish the downfall of Sri Lanka.

65 years the Sinhala intellectuals destroyed the country which was built by the administration of British Rulers and hard toil and real sweat of Tamil coolies and Tamil officers. It was country challenging Japan and South Korea. Now they made as a Asian Wonder even stranger than North Korea.

For the 65 year the country was suffering like “Kurankin kai poomalai” (Beautiful flower garland was caught on the hand of a mad monkey). Now these Sinhala Intellectuals pointing fingers at each other and quarreling. Dhayan claiming he is better than Ranil. Ranil blaming Old King.

DJ’s entire argument is based on ONE WORD in RW’s statement – RESETTING (our strategic position in the world) instead of re-balancing or course correction.

While it is good to INDEPENDENTLY analyse a statement it is not rocket science to realize that over analysis based on one word instead of the entire context of the statement could and would result in wrong conclusions.

DJ was once respected as an INDEPENDENT commentator. However all his recent articles had been on one theme – Mahinda Rajapaksa is the best leader to govern SL while Ranil & Chandrika cannot be trusted. It is also a fact that DJ was appointed as an ambassador for two countries by Mahinda while Ranil & Chandrika did not grant him any favours.

With such bias the question is WHETHER DJ IS PROSTITUTING HIS INTELLIGENCE FOR PERSONAL GAIN.

PS. The clan who think it is only Mahinda who can govern SL and the clan who think only Ranil can govern the UNP and SL are both insulting the intelligence skills and capabilities of their Countrymen.

    Thank you Dayan welcome back.

Racist!( just thought I would add that since it is now your customary title it does not mean anything.)

It is interesting that RW starts out by insulting his Colonial Cousins the Americans on their invasion of Iraq.

It is also interesting that he calls the parliament an echo chamber – he was leader of the opposition – so was he an echo as well?

It appalls me that those who kow tow to the great Lee Kuan Yew who redefined not only Singapore but perfect authoritarian rule, are against our local authoritarian. Mr. MR

We need younger, more competent leadership. You know who they are. This is simply not going anywhere.

    Dayan,

Don’t be discouraged by all these malevolent responses to your articles. You write intelligently and your articles are understood and appreciated by those of us are able to see the big picture. We all love our country and I can see if we go ahead with the current government’s agenda, in hundred years or less the majority Sinhalese will be the minority. The Tamil population will grow in leaps and bounds like in India. The Sinhalese people will disappear or will be integrated in to the Tamil majority. Unfortunately, the Sinhalese people cannot fathom this as they are mired in a quagmire where they can only see the surroundings close to them. They are not able to see the future of Sri Lanka. What they do not understand is that there are majorities in every country and the minority have to move with the majority. Only in Sri Lanka that the majority moves with a minority mind set.

Please keep on writing. Someday, some of these naysayers may agree with all what you say, if they live that long to see the outcome if Sri Lanka continues to be governed by Ranil W.

    Thank you.

Dayan the politician and Rajapakshe bootlicker can read Ranil’s mind. If this were true then pigs will fly. Dayan has become a cheap political lackey of the Rajapakshe’s He does not deserve any respect as a professional since he has flushed all his professional brain cells down the toilet.

“Not only has the former army commander refuted the allegation in some detail in an interview given to a prominent newspaper (owned by the PM’s family)”

This bit reveals the disgusting level of deceit this man conjures up with his ramblings. First of all the army commander was part of the conspiracy and was a Rajapakshe stooge so of course he will deny it all. Next this so called wickremesinghe family owned newspaper is thrown in there for additional effect when any one who knows the background is well aware that the Wijeya group is completely independent and does not pander to RW and neither has RW ever expected them to show him any favour.

The problem with all shades of interests in this country including all forms of ethnic, political, educated, less educated, rich, poor and many others is the problem of not being able to see things impartialy without being trapped in self styled prejudices. Some take it for granted that they could use their reputation of being intellectual of some sort(?) advancing incomprehensible arguments and reasons to justify their own thinking/patiality.This is what Dr.DJ did during the last elections in coming out of with his own reasoning for supporting MR. I was shocked. How can a so called intellegent person with sufficient internal and external exposure argue for a person who has ruined the democratic system of checks and balances and undermined/attacked the aged old core values of this society etc: A group allaged to have engaged in unpresidented level of curruption, misuse, mismanagement, nepotism etc: which were glaringly obvious by the time of the elections. Shame on you. You were argueing that the same regeme should be brought into power. The ordinary voter was able to treat the persons committed the above crimes with contempt. What you did is call intellectual dishonesty. Now this is not to justyfy enthroning RW. He is not a person firmly rooted with the common man of this country. Dosn’t have an idea of the pulse of the common man.Such a person cannot lead this country not even a Pradesiys Saba. He is shrued as claimed. Having his own agenda. MR is the same they do not feel for the country.MR should be mainly responsibile for the current political instability of this country. He had his two terms. On his own went before the people and was rejected. Now he should allow the person chosen by the peole to run the country. Going further he is spliting SLFP too. If he wants to stage a come back he should in public respond to the allegations of curruption etc mentioned above and clear his name. Those who are trying to bring him back for their own benifits too are criminals who have no feeling for this country. Then comes Maithri. He should assert himself. He has given every thing on a platter to RW who has his own agenda and who has not got a mandate from the people. MS is still the Executive President with all powers. Until the changes proposed by 19A amendments are in place he will remain the same. Unfortunately he has abdicated these powers and allowing the RM to call the shots. The UNPers are doing the same as the last lot.Only the faces and the style are different. They started with a national scale robbery with Arjuna Mahendran who is still being protected by PM.
In desperation we have to appeal to the voter again. Please send the whole lot home at the forthcomoing election and elect some people who genuingly love this country and capable of running it.Dr.DJ please understand that there is no place in this country for well dressed and disguised interllectual dishonesty. You do not represent the common man as in the case of RW. Both of you are aliens to this society.

Dayan – now that you have revealed your version of “Ranil’s real agenda”, let us have YOUR “real agenda” in trying to get MR back in the saddle.

Are you REALLY keen on having the MR administration back, given his record of blatant nepotism, near-total impunity, white vans, disappearances of critics, mass-scale corruption, bogus mega-projects, etc., etc.?

If so, give us your rationale for your incessant pleas and so-called justification for your non-stop drivel in favor of MR.

If one sits backs and thinks about it this writer is gifted as a prolific writer. That is it.

He elicits many comments as has ability to get under one’s skin with various current theories that are just that.

He is a platinum level scaremonger in the doom and gloom/self praise business.Like the paid people bussed to MR house, maybe paid per article.
    Currently employed by MR (again)
