By Shohorab Ahamed –
This is a response to the article written by Muhammed Fazl, “Are Women To Be Blamed For Rape”
He begins with a quote from the Quran ; “And among His signs is this that He has created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them; and He has put love and mercy between you…” – [Quran – 30:21]
So the Quran prescribes tranquility, love and mercy between the man and the woman but he goes on to put his own words later to show that tranquility lasts only as long as a man doesn’t see a woman in a thong somewhere. Thus, a man gets aroused seeing a woman in scanty clothes maybe on TV or when he goes swimming and satisfies that arousal by raping another innocent woman or a child. It’s your fault my lady that you wore a thong in Colombo and triggered an unknown man hundreds of miles away to rape an innocent. Woe to you.
Though the Quran has prescribed good things you have some excuse that’s completely man made for committing a crime so devastating. I wonder why this verse was even quoted because it is contradicting the same article he is writing. Maybe because that’s the only verse he could think of in his mission to be known, I mean known to be well versed in his religious scripture, an illness most people have. I wonder what he will quote and write if it was him who was raped by some man who had just watched TV or was working as a server in a hotel.
So let’s get about educating the women in Colombo and other cities that you will find ladies in a short dress walking down a street or wear a thong when going swimming which hardly happens in the town concerned, not the men. Also let’s go petitioning against the west for making movies that has bikini clad ladies in them, also create an awareness campaign in Europe for women, educating them on clothing etiquette and rape in Sri Lanka will stop.
I think that is the most backward, ignorant and bias assessment I have read in a secular society like ours.
He quotes the Quran. Let’s just make a quick assessment of what the books says.
Women are your Tilth
“Your women are a Tilth for you. So approach your Tilth as you wish towards goodness. And be aware of God and know that you will meet Him, and give good news to the believers.” – Quran 2:223
This verse is addressing the man and tells him that women are your Tilth. The word Tilth or “Ĥarthun Lakum” means a cultivation, where you were born or grown from and where your future generations or children will be conceived. Many “MEN” have understood this to mean as your cultivation where you plant your seed and that you can use them as you like.
In fact it is in the contrary wherein the woman is elevated to possess her due respect and men are required to give that due respect. Man must remember that he was born of a woman (Tilth), and that every human is born of a woman and your children will be born of a woman. Thus, give due respect, remember God and you will be answerable to him. In a world where women’s rights are questionable, this verse gives the men a clear warning and an understanding of her status.
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and keep covered their private parts, for that is better for them. God is fully aware of what you do” – Quran 24:30
Your scripture tells you to lower your gaze my male friend. Thus I wonder why the writer does not directly tell his fellow males to lower their gaze instead. Maybe because he is a male too and has the lions pride never to let his kind down.
Just take a look at these numbers from the grave crimes abstract of 2013.
Compare with a crime like Hurt by a Knife and the numbers will devastate you. Only about 11% of the rape plaints are filed while almost 40% of the other crime is filed while only 2 cases are pending with the AG for Hurt by a knife crimes. This is a shame.
Most of the Rape/Incest crimes are not even recorded due to various factors. One of them being the rapist is a relative and the family themselves try and hide the crime in fear of shame. But here what we see are numbers of recorded cases, only 1.7% of the criminals are unknown and still we can’t seem to convict the known. 108 Hurt by knife cases ended in a conviction while only 7 rapists were convicted. There is a problem with the state, the justice system and the law.
These victims don’t even know that they can request for closed quarter questioning where they can explain the crime with no shame, but there is no one to tell them that. They are questioned in front of many and the village girl will die of shame to talk openly. If you have any concern, go and do something about that rather than commenting on how women dress and their effect on the male’s libido that makes them commit these crimes. In that case a country like Germany that has had one of the most violent pasts with genocide and war, along with their heavy rock and roll culture and violent movies etc. should have more deaths via gunshot wounds and racist attacks than any other country. But Lo, they are the sixth in rape rates in the world. The rabbit hole runs deeper than that, of course not understood nor explored by this shallow writer.
Your Quran states my friend that it is not the clothing that matters most, it is your righteousness. Propagate that first.
“Children of Adam, We have sent down for you garments to alleviate your bodies, and feathers; and the garment of righteousness is the best. That is from the signs of God, perhaps they will remember.” – Quran 7:26
“O mankind, We created you from a male and female, and We made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Surely, the most honourable among you in the sight of God is the most righteous. God is Knowledgeable, Expert.” – Quran 49:13
The assumption that in a conservative country like Sri Lanka, when you dress in a bikini and a man sees you he gets aroused and takes it on an innocent woman somewhere is false because then, a secular country like America where a bikini is nothing but nobody’s business should have no rape at all, well they are ranked number one in the world. It is a fact that a woman in a bikini very rarely gets raped and this kind of public thoughts spill fuel on the fire.
This writer also talks about women showing their cleavage or leg to attract the most eligible man out there and that they end up attracting the wrong men who are attracted only sexually etc. What does that have to with rape? Vidhya that he quotes I am sure did not have that problem and it shows that the writers problems in his mind and heart found an opportunity in this article to blame the women for the perversions in men’s mind and heart. It’s a cheap trick.

Shohorab Ahamed –
Rape: Oh My God, Now It’s Your Fault My Lady!
“This is a response to the article written by Muhammed Fazl, “Are Women To Be Blamed For Rape”
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and keep covered their private parts, for that is better for them. God is fully aware of what you do” – Quran 24:30
So, this is where the problem.
Both the believing men and non-believing men do not lower their gaze, because there are women around.
So the Wahhabis, cover the women them up, so that they can still gaze, and they claim they are “Muslims:” who follow the Quran.
Thank you for bringing this DOUBLE STANDARDS issue to the surface. Basically, Fazl Mohamed is decent man with a Common Sense. He has his norms. However, the opinion he expresses, is the general Wahhabi Opinion of many brainwashed Muslims.
However, this was not the case in early Islam, during the Prophet’s period. The Wahhabis and clones opinion of women, is that they tempt man. So, keep them out, keep them away, and there is no women to tempt them. Same with alcohol. So, women are not generally allowed in the mosques, even though they were allowed during Prophet Mohamed’s period.
However, there is some truth to what Fazl Mohamed is saying. If there are two women side by side, one scantily clad, and the other modestly dressed, it is likely that the scantily dressed one will attract the attention of more men. however, it gives NO RIGHT for those men to jump on that women, gang rape her, and kill her.
In a sense Fazl Mohamed is saying, an ounce of Prevention is worth a pound of cure. What is interesting is that, the Wahhabi Position that you cannot reform or control, the men. Therefore, let’s solve the problem at the women’s end, and dress them up properly and keep them out of sight of men.
So, it is like a jungle. The hunters are the men. The prey is women. So, what should be the rules in the jungle, to be imposed by the Maharaja of the jungle? Who is the Maharaja of the Jungle? The state ? The Clerics, The Priests.
Clearly state the punishment and carry out the punishment. Despite all its flaws, the Saudi Arabian system of dealing with rapists seen to be quite effective in reducing the rapes.

“How is Saudi Arabia effective? Most of their rapes go unreported…”
At least the reported rape crimes are punished. What is the ratio? 1 in 10?
In Sri Lanka, even the reported rape crimes are NOT Punished.Punished. Apparently only 1 in 10 rapes are reported because the rapist is known to the victim.
Punishment in itself is a deterrent. Sri Lanka does not have the proper punishment.

The raped victims fear because punishment is for them. Even in Maldives it happened. That is Sharia Law.

I generally dont respond to comments like this because of two reasons, 1) its a genuine effort and I may come across as a debater with a genuine person 2) It takes a long explanation.
You misunderstood the whole point, that is said with all due respect Sir. I will respond to each of your points so that you and I are both on the same level playing-field.
1. Believing and non believing men do not lower their gaze you said. See, a law is given knowing that people always do not do that. If you are certain either way, there is no point in making any law. If we are like robots who will or will not lower our gaze for sure like destiny, then there is no point saying anything. If we all will cross a red light anyway, there is no point in putting it.
Its there to tell you whats right and whats wrong. You not doing it is your mistake, and is a mistake.
And you missed the point there. When Fazl says that women must be and be clad in a certain way, the Quran says the flipside. Fazl is quoting the Quran, and saying with his own words the opposite. Hope you understand.
2. You talk of a Wahhabi point of view, an isnad, or a fatwa. Wahhabis is a name born after the Quran. Thus is irrelevant. Hope you understand. If that is the opinion of many brainwashed Muslims as you say, that is just an opinion and that goes against their Furqan or Criterion, if you understand what a criterion is. Thus, this is measuring the yardstick with the cloth.
3. Again you have missed the point brother. His point was that if you see a woman in a bikini somewhere, you go to your village and rape a woman because you are getting rid of the frustration.
Is that why an Arab in a very conservative country would rape a maid? Where does he see a bikini clad woman? Does that mean he rapes his wife as well?
Is that why recently the “boyfriend” took his girlfriend out and raped her along with a gang of his friends? He could sleep with her anyway.
This rabbit hole is much deeper.
Just for your information Believing is Yaghullu min absarihim, which means not a physical lowering of your gaze alone. Keep your ego, lust and greed in tact. When you say Lamissi in Sinhalese, that does not literally mean a girl whos breasts are grown. It also means a grown up girl. A girl of age.
tin de dokon tin en tw idiw ophthalmw, rather, look at the bar/plank in your own eye (Luke 6:41)
And please dont get offended when I say this. This is not a jungle. In the jungle, animals kill for for food, protection. People kill for power, greed, wealth, lust, land for nothing, and the list goes on.
In the jungle males are predators, but they dont kill the females after sex out of sadistic rage and/or defense mechanism.
Also in the jungle males may have many partners in their life, but they are hypocritical enough to expect the women to be purely monogamous.
There is a fish in the denizens that mates with the female, attaches itself to the female because once she is pregnant she cant maneuver for sustenance, his body provides her sustenance until she gives birth. Of course, he is dead by then. Why cant we humans compare ourselves to that?
It is natural for a lioness to hunt, she is a predator. It is natural for a lion to have a pride. Survival of the fittest is natural. Animals mating rituals are natural. Rape in the human world is not natural. There is no excuse to it.
So that analogy is not relevant. In our world we are born to virtuous women, at least mostly. And we go raping innocent women. I am not gonna talk of the law system because there is no point. But lets set our visions straight.
Peace.

It is pure nonsense to even suggest a women could sometimes trigger her own rape by her behaviour. It is senseless to discuss the phenomenon of rape by citing the Quran. How can a book written by some desolate men in a bleak desert 1400 years ago tell your mother, sister, wife or daughter what to do with their bodies? It is idiotic to argue with the medieval Muhammed Fazl on any issue let alone rape. He will only understand what he is talking about when he is put in a jail full of sex-crazed men, wearing only his thong and holding a copy of the Quran to protect his back door.

This is what happens when people are brainwashed. You will find this fundamentalist Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews and others.
All rational thinking is replaced with brainwashed thinking. However, if they have a brainwashed argument or position, they need to come up with data and support. Since in Sri Lanka, in the 21st Century Rapes are happening on a regular basis, his 7th Century Tribal arguments are equally valid today, even though the environment has changed.

“Vidhya that he quotes I am sure did not have that problem and it shows that the writers problems in his mind and heart found an opportunity in this article to blame the women for the perversions in men’s mind and heart. It’s a cheap trick.” -Strike of the hammer on the head of the nail.
As this essay suggest, the foul game Fazi played was starting it with the religion. Certainly Fazi wanted to deny justice for Vidhiya. He attempted label her as Hindu and he reserved his justices be granted only to Muslim women who obey the god he prey. His heart and mind is telling him other religions are corrupted and needs to be punished, not allowed to have justice. His biased mind, as we all have understood, has passed the same judgment on the women, who are Muslims too. “You stay Under Control of the Men Folk”. His opinion is women are sins, though his religious quote opposed his opinion.
Rape has nothing to do with any religion. But it has a lot with the “Human Rights”. Not simple tied only to women’s right. Not just women’s, but nobody’s rights can be violated. God is not the protector on that. The democratically elected government is the one has the duty to see a woman too has the human rights just like the men. Government is there to protect its citizen’s right. Not to steal from one to give it to another. Not all the governments’ may have all the resources. But opening hand at somebody is not the option. All government has to develop with their means to fully fight the rape crime. There is no excuse for that.
I will never accept anybody with an ill intention, for any reason touching my daughter or any of the women in my house of which I am a male member. I never can open my heart and say it happened because including, including my house women, they did not follow the gods’ rule, written on the name of god, by some men who claim they are representative of the God, but could not claim as they are elected representatives of the current citizens. If there is an ill will in their mind, there is no excuse in mind. Just to tell about my daughter, as like every other father, I have spent a substantial part of my time, have spent a substantial part of my money and have forgone substantial part of my happiness for she shall have full happy life when she leaves me. Unlike Fazi, there is no difficulty for me to put my leg into the Vidya’s parent’s shoe. I do not think if Fazi is a father like the rest of us to write an article like that. It is on a pretty same angle this author has questioned Fazi “I wonder what he will quote and write if it was him who was raped by some man who had just watched TV or was working as a server in a hotel.” I understand fully that sentence.
Thank god, the pain unbearable Vidya suffered had ended her life. It seems had she lived, article like Fazi’s might have tortured her further, long until it parts her life. Until Fazi like men become civilized God may keep women with him under his protection, not lowering them with in the barbaric crowd who like the Punkudu Thivu criminals who physically rape them and Fazi like educated Colombo criminals who verbally rape them.

Human nature drives; misguided lust to rape and greed to theft. People tend to forget the good old adage, prevention is better than cure. Voyeurs will fight to preserve a permissive society for obvious reasons. Rape will continue until the symptoms are addressed and dealt. There is a correlation between a permissive society and rape unfortunately. Naturally flaunting ones assets have severe consequences.

Permissiveness never lead to heterosexual relations rather towards vague bisexuality gay union sodomy because they hunt for stronger and stronger youth to exploit. Population an excuse in face of calamities natural disasters mass killings. Prostitution legalized, also for homosexuality. Urotophobic, if a woman walks naked even they don’t get arousal, squalid whore!
/

Lack of communication if not intoxicated. Covered head to toe with face veil won’t arouse a man means the nakedness also won’t. I would run a mile to turn back. Willing men make advances which is misconstrued as harassment. If he writes a letter and if the woman shows to her elders, no other evidence needed to punish him for indecent proposal. If the woman considers it a decent proposal she can pursue! What a hypocrisy? Who dares to write to be misunderstood? A sms or a missed call to a woman ended in murder. The social media is full of sham scams. Dating agencies charge too much and they have lost their credibility. Elders free for brokering rejected old and outdated. If arranged marriages are scoffed the desire to seek groom on their own leads to abortion and suicide. Status conscious people do love for pastime. Rich think they can pay and wipe their sins. Selfies too aid and abet abuses. Severe punishment like lynching produced deterrent effect in some remote towns. The urban rape rate is high due to gender disparity. This keeps most of the women at homes, unveiled. Claustrophobia!
/
Mallaiyuran / June 1, 2015
What you say about men is true to women too. Poor woman and fooled by dating agencies woman have needs. They may not get that hiding under the Vail. If their intention is to lower their expectation, or even to sleep with men they may not protect and provide, they should have freedom to do that.
Region can say anything about who created women to whom. The evolution theories have proved nature created the men’s appearance attractive to women and wise versa. Further man is not only induced by any physical properties to turn towards the women. In all criminal minds just simply knowing the lonely one is women is more than enough to rape. That is not new, because lonely ones are always robbed too. It is related to criminal conduct, not related sexual arousal. So it is the criminal mind needs the modification. Fazi is not a medical professional to talk these problem.(not we either). But in the western countries where most of these research done have applied these theories to their laws.
Misbehaving men may start to call the pet owners to keep their pets clothed, because their look make them to commits crime when they see a lonely woman. So, instead the governments start to cloth wild animals on the tax payers money, they better start to protect the women from the criminals.

I am sceptical when people begin to quote the Quran or the Bible or other to prop up their point of view. Firstly all these books are authored by the male gender, in medieval times, to satisfy the male of the period. There is nothing Godly about them. Therefore it is not surprising that what they preach is skewed in favour of the male gender. The birthplace of Islam is in Saudi Arabia but see how appallingly they treat the women there. Sadly it is accepted as the norm and nobody dare protest.

I completely agree with you. Even the so-called god’s word is written by men to satisfy their lust by being able to use those words to deceive, mislead, and even to terrorize their wives and daughters. Of course it does not matter that you have not even read those books. But it is important we do everything possible to stop the terrorism.
You have given special mention to Saudi Arabia. And rightly so. Just imagine the more than half million Sri Lankan slaves, male and female, laboring in the Saudi homes, factories, hospitals and infirmaries, luxury hotels, being used one way or another, to provide carnal pleasures to rejuvenate the withering old men in that country.
It is tragic that even in the 21st century Sri Lankans refuse to think logically and get rid of the Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, and Christian books written by perverts of a bygone era.
It is a travesty that our Parliamentarians have still not reinstated by Statute the sacred right of our women to get married to several husbands. It was functioning so well because the engaging husband left his amude outside the door for the information of the other husbands. This brought so much understanding and peace.
From 1948, our Parliamentarians have not bothered to make it law that it will be criminal for a man in the house to give instructions to the females. Any decisions shall be jointly taken, except in the management of the kitchen where the woman’s word will be the first and last.
There shall be laws which make it criminal to criticize any woman’s clothes, conduct, behaviour, or speech. Woman shall be empowered to wear any kind of clothes, or none at all if she so desires.
Woman shall have the right to engage in sexual relations with any man of her choice at any time day or night. It shall be a criminal offence if the husband interferes in this matter. For the avoidance of doubt the husband shall have no say in the matter. It will be criminal for man to engage in such relations without the written express consent of the woman.
Sylvia please do your best to fight for and establish these rights so that Sri Lanka will become Paradise again. For Journalistic support you may obtain the assistance of Miss Appuhamy, Miss Peiris, and Miss Wickrama Adittiya.

Bro, it’s better to know before you comment: When it comes to self-control, check the basics of Islam.
BASICS OF ISLAM (NOT REFERRING TO IGNORANT, THOUGH ONE CLAIMS TO BE MUSLIMS):
1. FAITH: Research/learn about creations. Then believe in ONE God who created you, love you, mercy upon you, and will return to.
2. PRAYERS: Practice to remember him always, often leads to minimize mistakes.
3. FASTING: Practice self-control for a month then reflect in the rest of the months.
4. ZAKATH/CHARITY: Don’t be greedy. Purify your wealth by giving to poor
5. HAJ/PILGRIMAGE TO MECCA. On 2 pieces of clothes: Stand equal, regardless of king, beggars, white, black, etc..

What Fazl and a lot of other believers in truth fail to understand is asking women to dress properly in order to control rape IS justifying rape.
