Reason For Dissolution: Arjuna Mahendran Found Guilty In COPE Inquiry

“It appears that the Governor of the Central Bank, Arjuna Mahendran would have temporary breathing space as a result of the dissolution of Parliament. All news pertaining to COPE inquiry says that it has found him guilty over the Treasury Bonds Scam.” a source close to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Colombo Telegraph.

Ranil“However, all those who I meet, big or small, say that they are all unhappy about how Prime Minster Ranil Wickremesinghe has manipulated the whole incident. What a pathetic story about the good governance for which we all fought risking our lives!” she further said.

Colombo Telegraph also learnt that the COPE report has implicated Ministers Kabir Hashim, Ravi Karunanayake, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and his friend Malik Samarawickrama.

Are you sure this off the record briefing is not transmitted from planet Sith of Hambantota? Remember elections are around the corner. Negative campaign is far more important and effective now than ever before.

Once the COPE Report is released and Mahendran would no doube be found guilty, as the evidence against him is overwhelming, President Sirisena must immediately remove him from office and Arjuna Mahendran must be tried in open court for financial crimes like Raj Rajaratnam was.

Question is: why has President Sirisena not removed Mahendran already? – until the investigation is complete because no doubt Mahendran will use his position as Governor of CB to manipulate relevant info. and block a transparent investigation into the bond scam with his son-in-law. It does not a take a rocket scientist to figure this one out!

So too must Mahinda Jarapassa’s Nivard Cabraal be tried for insider trading and currency speculation while Governor of CB.

You seem to take a great deal of interest in this case. Can I ask you what stops you from filling case, as a citizen of Sri Lanka, at a court of law against Mahendran. This is how Subramaniam Swamy filed a case against Jeyalalitha and the Supreme Court ordered a full blown investigation.

In my opinion, Mahendran needs to answer some questions, but Ranil appears to give him the benefit of doubts in this case. Maybe, Ranil is somewhat biased in favour of him. Nevertheless,I feel, Ranil is still a relatively clean politician.

[,I feel, Ranil is still a relatively clean politician.]

Love the comment ok now the new the standard for Sri Lankans. Lets expand this standard to future politicians and corporate bosses who want get on the soup bowel. Lets elect honourable politicians I used the word honourable with grain of salt, if one is relatively clean can be measured by one is involved with low number of insider trading, nepotism, thefts, rapes, drug smugglings, accepting bribes, beating up opponents, Shooting so on so on. Ranil Wickramsinghe can be held as the standard which others should judged as the relatively clean Sri Lankan leading icon.

              I love your comment too!!

Mahinda is not going to win the election, but I am concerned he might return as an opposition leader. Unless Ranil gets a 2/3 majority, Mahinda will scuttle any initiative by Ranil to reform whether it’s on the National Question or good governance. Sri Lanka will continue descend deep, I am afraid. Even the relatively clean Mr Clean will not be able to cleanse the nation!

The United National Party (UNP) would make a written request to President Maithripala Sirisena to dissolve Parliament, a Deputy Minister said today.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ajith P. Perera told a media briefing that the UNP had decided to make a written request for the dissolution of Parliament in accordance with the resolution passed by the party’s working committee recently.

Mr. Perera said the UNP would also remind the President in writing that he would have to honour the pledge made during the Presidential Election that Parliament would be dissolved after hundred days.

“This government has the mandate to rule this country only for 100 days and therefore it is not correct to go on for two hundred days,” he said. Reason For Dissolution: Arjuna Mahendran Found Guilty In COPE Inquiry

Pure Bullshit. What is the IQ of these “Journalists”?

Conspiracy again..! Dissolution delayed until false accusations via COPE are manufactured against UNP

The decision to dissolve parliament (25) was changed in order to ‘manufacture’ a scheme to mount accusations against the UNP during the elections, based on reports reaching Lanka e news.

This sinister scheme aims at preparing a speech against Ranil purportedly made by Arjun Mahendran , and incorporate that as a COPE supplementary report while also giving an official base to it.

This conspiracy was hatched at the official residence of Susil Premachandra day before yesterday night (24).This discussion was attended by Susil , John Senevirathne, Dilan Perera and notorious and corrupt ex Central bank governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal. It was planned to introduce a supplementary report stating that Arjun Mahendra purportedly made a statement to the COPE committee that Ranil exerted pressure on him to sell the controversial central bank treasury bonds to a particular party , and then hand that report over to the speaker immediately.

Accordingly a COPE committee report has been ‘manufactured’ in an unholy haste throughout yesterday (25) , and is to be handed over today (26) to the speaker.

The COPE committee that was appointed by the previous parliament comprises old opposition members Sujeewa Senasinghe , Eran Wickremeratne and Rosie Senanayake ,and those who represented the previous government were: Susil Premajayantha, DEW Gunasekera , Rajiva Wijesinghe , Weerakumara and Lasantha Alagiyawanna.

The COPE committee comprises members of the government and the opposition ,and when a report is prepared , all the member should sign it. One group alone cannot prepare the report. Hence , this latest attempt is to prepare a spurious misleading report signed by the members of the UPFA alone , and hand over that to the speaker.

However , DEW Gunasekera had refused to sign this bogus report .Even the speaker had rejected it , but because the president Maithripala is behind this , there is a great possibility for this bogus malicious report to be accepted today.

It is well to recall during the last presidential elections , Miathripala Sirisena bowed and vowed before the people that he would be impartial and politically neutral , but now he has decided to participate in the rallies of the SLFP Islandwide to secure victory for it , at the next elections. Already Rajitha and S.B have been named as his speakers during the campaign , and they are promised parliamentary seats through the national list.

The SLFP led by Maithripala Sirisena having nothing to say against the UNP during the next elections campaign ,had planned this aforementioned conspiracy hurriedly , and are seeking to obtain the COPE supplementary report against Ranil, and carry it as a ‘certificate’ , fake though . Meanwhile president Maithripala has taken steps to postpone the dissolution of Parliament.

Maithripala has told a close Minister friend of his yesterday “ if I allow Ranil to form a government with a majority I will have to become a ‘Wijetunge’ .”

When such base , selfish and opportunistic politics is being indulged in without shame , the country’s tourist arrivals are going to increase without doubt – certainly more tourists will arrive to amuse themselves and take a look at the only leaders in the whole world with uniquely unscrupulous and ungrateful traits .

You do realize that it is the President that dissolves parliament and not any of the individuals listed in this document? Why would he save the skins of these politicians when outing them surely strengthens the hand of the SLFP in the upcoming election? I sense bad journalism and an unrealiable source. Putting out such unsubstantiated claims plays into the hands of the MR faction that we all fought so hard to get rid off.

Blame it all on the Rajapakases. That is the easy way out. All I heard from Chandrika and Ranil when they were dancing the jig was that seventeen years of the UNP had brought the country to a standstill. Now after hundred days all you can do is blame the Rajapakses for everything including the bad weather.

      • 0
        2

Rajapaksa blamed everything on evil West in turn UNP now blaming Rajapaksa. This is not new Obama nearly after two terms still blames Bush and then his own people for all ills of US & the world. Corrupt politicians from both side still siting together to day round the soup bowl to take good slurp. I read the same venoms opinions during Rajapaksa hey days from his cronies attacking CT for exposing so many scandals now identical phrases and words been used by UNP supporter’s to attack CT exposing scandals by new regime. So nothing changed ” don’t like the truth attack the messenger and hope thing will go away.

This is a bad reflection on President MS and his yahapalanaya promoters.RW and his gang with their western friends has tried to take advantage of MS’s simplicity for their own benefit. MS must be now regretting his betrayal of MR.

    • 5
      3

MS would indeed be a fool to trust MR or listen to MR’s cronies. If he had not dissolved Parliament, he would have fallen into deep trouble had MR and his gang brought an impeachment motion against him! Then he would have been like a ‘sitting duck’ and MR would have manipulated everything and taken back control! I think the dissolution is the smartest thing MS did. It was either the 20th Amendment or his life!!

MR supporters say that they want him to be the next PM because there is a big demand for him from Game Janathawa, despite accusations of large scale corruption against him.

The COPE finding Ranil implicated in the Bond issue is good news for Ranil and bad news for MR. Ranil is now a real challenge for MR in the game of corruption. In a country consisting mainly of cattle who eat rice and the balance, humans who eat grass, the more corrupt a politician is, the more is the demand for him to lead the Janathawa.

Let the games begin and we will see!

Supreme Court, who has the final say, has cleared governor Mahendran of any wrong doing and FCID never arrested him nor questioned him. Who is COPE to decide as to who is at fault or not and who cares for independent inquiries. This statement was kept prepared to be flashed immediately after the news of Parliament dissolution is announced as this is election time and anti UNP’ers, collecting stories for the platforms. It is certainly a SLFP/UFPA ploy, who are now concerned about UNP voter strength, as they remain divided.
PM Ranil had given a lengthy speech, explaining every detail on this subject of Bond handling by CB Governor and no one in the parliament questioned him but stories are being collected for public consumption.

There is a sinhale saying “Kanda ona unama Kabaragoyath Thalagoya wenewa kiyala” – What is the difference between now and then – Under yahapalanaye also Supreme Court became the mouth piece of Gov. “Under yahapalanay sovereignty of the country is pawned to outside powers – but under MR no such thing happen”

Of course no such thing happened under MR for he must be living in a parallel universe.

In a globalised world sovereignty is a fancy word, meaningless and good only for stoking up xenophobia in order to hide all criminal activities and failures of the rulers. Here are a few reasons as to why Sri Lanka never enjoyed the freedom and sovereignty which it proudly (foolishly) claims to possess.

        Colombo Port City.

Hambantota Harbour (Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port)- China gets controlling stake.

Oil drilling deal in Mannar with Hindian company

The country has been mortgaged to China to the tune of 3 to 5 billion.

The Indo Lanka agreement is a nasty piece of contract still valid and has overarching control over this island.

Fishing rights given to foreign trawlers/factory ships.

Hindian excesses in this island in the 1980 and after.

Dependent on foreign arms purchases in the absence of good domestic ethnic policies.

Army to army relation with, USA, Hindia, China, Pakistan, ……. not only infringes the sovereignty (which we never had) but also gives the foreigners the right to control this island as they desire through agents of influence in the armed forces.

There are another million and one thing about this island’s sovereignty that you can ignore.

Only three weeks ago Hindia sent its commandos on a hot pursuit into Myanmar. Where has Myanmar’s sovereignty gone?

RW lost the Presidency by trusting too much in Pirabhakaran. Probably, RW might loose the chance to become Prime Minister because of Arjuna Mahendran. Irony is that RW is the only leader as far as I am concerned who could deliver a decent status for the SL Tamils.

    • 5
      1

Marakattai – That is a wrong statement as VP ordered the Tamil people
in the N/E to boycott the election and they did due fear and MR became
the President by a small margin of votes and VP paid for it with his life and many other innocent lives. Neither Ranil can be trusted to deliver a good package to the Tamils as he is very cunning and will avoid approaches from Tamil leaders but he will not indulge in Thuggery
& intimidation, which was most visible in N/E, specially in Islands like Keyts in the North, during the former regime and will not use local armed militias to harass, rape and kill the Tamils nor introduce
drugs to the local population. He comes from a good family and good school and moved in society.

Arjun Mahendran CB Governor was cleared against any wrong doings by Supreme court, the final authority, hence doubt any party taking capital out of it. It was an inside job to oust the governor, who was off guard, and many high profile people are frightened to dabble in this matter as it can boomerang against them as SC may get involved again.

      • 4
        1

I completely agree with you the way in which VP achieved his end.
RW is not Mother Theresa. You and I would do the same, as Sinhalese politicians, to keep our jobs/goals. Electoral landscape would have been way better for UNP since 2010 had RW relinquished his leadership position in 2010. No one would be able to say for sure if someone else had taken the leadership of UNP, that would have benefited the Tamils standing in SL. I am in no way saying that RW persisted all those pressures to help Tamils. He persisted for his own good.
Other point about RW comes from good family and etc. JR had the same privileged position but in my opinion, he was the sole responsibility for the 1983 mayhem. Even today, very many Sinhalese people were ashamed for that act of JR.
AM is not a lay person to violate CB’s rule in issuing bonds and thereby he could be simply exonerated by the Supreme court. For being a Thamil, we find excuses call a spade spade.

A governor could not have been unaware of such a scam under his very nose.
The son-in-law’s company came from nowhere after the father-in-law became governor and enriched itself for 30 years.
    These are the facts.
It maybe that Ranil appointed Mahendran in good faith, but the son-in-law saw an opening and did the trick – Mahendran could not object.

    Mahendran is responsible.

    • 2
      2

      Justice,

Your inside information of Mahendran and his son-in-law is woefully inadequate. Didn’t you know that the son-in-law was very much involved in the wheeling and dealing business that was going on during MR’s time with his connections to the Central Bank officers and his “so called” friendship with NR? How did he manage to get BOC to back him up if he was not doing business with them in the past?
Poor Father-in-law Mahendran comes into the scene not knowing what his daughter’s hubby was doing and in the process got muck all over his face. You should concentrate on the son-in-law and his connections to the Central Bank’s deal making officers if you need to know the truth.

      • 2
        1

Kalu Nangi – cpy. Justice : You are dead right. Mahendran’s son in law was in business with the CB, BOC and other banks ,long before Mahendran joined CB. He came from abroad and was caught off guard as he would not have suspected foul play by his senior colleagues in office on taking up the position but the current work he is doing is commendable, which shows that he has the qualification and experience required for this job as CB Governor.

We are laymen and we do not know how this business works. Even
in the case of his son in law, he may have been much shrewder & alert person than the other brokers and may have earned the money
legally due to his fast and intelligent thinking. He had worked with CB before and had been a successful broker. One man’s intelligence also counts.

One should think before making h/her unilateral comments as to why this man, the son in law, is not questioned by FCID or remanded while the ministers and MPs suspected of bribery & corruption were arrested and questioned? The answers should come out after the election as to who & who were involved in the fraud,
if it did happen and it could boomerang.

Colombo Telegraph’s information cannot be wrong.

Some weeks ago a lawyer friend who has an ear to the political manoeuvrings in Colombo told me that Mahendran was only a pawn in the bond scandal and that the whole affair was a UNP scheme aimed at building up a UNP election fund. He mentioned the very same names in the UNP High Command now disclosed by Colombo Telegraph as the architects of the scheme. He even mentioned that one in charge of the finance portfolio might have benefitted personally.

This bond scadal is proof that these UNP fellows too are a bunch of crooks. Almost all Sri Lankan politicans are crooks and they are all corrupt bastards. There are no exceptions.

Can Dr Mahendran and Galleon Ravi sign cheques and borrow funds after this Dissolution?.

Because Dr Mahendran has just announced that he is going to raise tens of Billion Dollars from US and Europe to pay out our loans from China and India.

    How cool?

Chinese and Indian loans are from the respective Governments , And they do not charge commercial rates.

But Dr Mahendran reckons he can borrow from US Govt, and Cameron Govt cheaper..

Can you believe it, unless your an an Elite?.

Europe wouldn’t refinance their own member Greece.

Isn’t Dr Mahendran pulling a another fast One?.

Only money from the West and US come from big Merchant banks who put loans together from Super Funds , Private Clients and other Investment Funds.

They are more expensive because they have to pay commissions at various levels.Plus they charge at least a few percentage points for Sovereign Risk..

If Dr Mahendran is allowed to indulge in this again, this time the poor inhabitants will lose their titles to their Infrastructure as well..

    • 6
      2

Why not some body ask the question – Under whose authority BoC funded A Mahendran’s son in laws firm to buy bonds – without any collateral backing the loan

BoC could have used those funds to do a direct purchase at the published rate

Calculate and see how many billions of poor tax payers money A Mahendra’s SIL’s company is earning per year for 30 years – because expected rate went from 9.5 to 12.5

Isn’t this day light robbing of our money – Yahapalanay Phooo !!

RW has put the whole country at stake for one Arujuna M. I don’t want MR back. So RW even at this late hour should play smart.

Whether OPE is dominated by MARA henchmen is immaterial.

From the beginning everyone knew that the bond issue was a scandal and it was a matter of time.

Hopefully Colombo voters will respond to Ravi K and Harsha at the elections.

In any other country a few would have been jailed by now for the losses incurred and due to conflict of interest.

Lanka Watch did you read the supreme court decision ? The supreme court is not a body to investigate corruption ! It only held that procedures have not been flouted. For example when MR gives a contract to Access he does not necessarily break the law. On the face of it every thing will look legit. That is what the supreme court said.

Also dont forget that this is only a name. The supreme court is a very downgraded institution manned by lawyers who are dishonest and below average. Most are pandankarays and boot lickers and perverts. Think of Sarath Silva ( by the waters edge), Asoka Silva ( advising politicians after retirment), Sriyani Bandaranayake (Husband-NDB), Mohan Pieris (the biggest joke).

By the way it is reported in a newspaper that Mohan Pieris has returned back to Sri Lanka after a round the world Trip. His first social call was at a Bana given in the memory of a lawyer who was under investigation for defrauding clients money and also funds of the Bar association ! Unlike thieves these lawyers have no respect for each other even !

So dont try to hide behind a decision of this so called supreme court.

Arjun Mahendran’s son in law made a huge profit for one weeks work where he bought 80% of the Bonds. For this particular Bond issue the interest went up !The Boc also put a bid for perpetual. Can you explain all this ?

Harry – Sorry for delayed response. You have talked some crap about
the old supreme court and the people who handled it and people know
as to who directed the operations there, then, but the supreme court
in the country today is supreme . You are aware the President could not over rule the SC decision on 19A or interfere with it and also SC ruled that Mr. Gothabaya cannot be arrested on four grounds and the
ruling stood its grounds. You have mentioned above the SC held that procedures had not been flouted by the governor CB, so what is the charge against the Governor and his son in law and how come. both of them are not counting bars, if they have faulted. You know that today,
arms of the supreme court judges cannot be twisted and how come, with so much of ill gotten money in the country, why they were not taken to courts as of now. Who is holding it ? Have’nt you heard that the CB
governor is doing a great job after he resumed duties and declared fit to hold this post.

Your last para is interesting. You and I are laymen and we do not know
how the brokerage system works and it could be due to intelligence and alertness of the son in law, he was able to buy most of the bonds as other brokers were not that smart to grab it in time. He had worked with CB.BOC and other banks earlier before Governor CB took office and he had made millions as a smart broker.

Dissolution of Parliament and the Cope inquiry are two different items on the Menu. One is Vegetarian and the other is Non-Vegetarian. Perhaps,in the usual style of the MaRa camp they want both.

CT should be careful not to fuel negative public opinion unless squarely based on fact.

CT should not be seen to be stoking the fires for MR and his thieves!

CT is and has been evidently on the payroll of Mahinda Rajapaksha. This mud report is the best evidence to that fact. There are umpteen number of allegations against the rogue Rajapakshas and their cronies to talk about but every lunatic is running carrying this falsification against CB Governor simply because they want to create a mythical mud story against RW and use it for cheap political advantage in the coming elections. This false story against Governor is the same type of nonsense story that was created against SF and Shirani B. CT has become a whore of Rajapakshas.

Was CT a “whore” of UNP a few months ago when they were exposing the crimes of MR?
Was it because CT was a “whore” of MR that he blocked it? That’s great logic !

        2

        Dev,

Yours is [Edited out] logic! CT used to be with common sense in the past but not anymore. CT is a gossip site now and no different from Wimalaya’s LankaCNews! CB Governor has already been absolved by two judgment bodies-a Commission a court of law. And I think they went to Bribery Commission too but to no avail! But the buffalos in CT keep on clinging to the defamation attempts perpetrated by Rajapaksha vassals which reflects the levels CT has precipitated from their earlier status. Just look at the comments in this very forum on this particular article-typicaly of Sri Lankan donkey style! These buffalos will have to live for another 1000 years to comprehend the professionalism of RW! Get lost useless imbecils!

Ranil has ruined his political furture once when the war was waged aggressively against LTTE and when troops captured places such as Thoppigal,Wadamarachchi ect he pooh pooh such capture ignoring that the whole country was behind troops. It destroyed his image considerably. His come back in the last presidential election was remarkable but his action appointing his own people to probe the bond scam of Arjun Mahendran damages his Mr clean image to a greater extent. He must be careful not to repeat such mistakes which will cost him dearly. He is a true democrat compared to corrupt MR who knows nothing except to rob, plunder.

This is the problem with Sri Lanka. Average IQ 79. Cannot understand due process. So cannot understand that if anyone is guilty it is the committee that made the decision…

…also the entire practice of “Official Insider Trading as a Policy” that was the norm…is illegal…

As it is, the country is in great danger in the hands of the present government. The president is helpless and unable to take action due to his need to pay gratitude to the PM and his henchmen.I think it is time to think of a new, honest politician for the next PM post.RW has failed miserably in the administration of the country with the rotten appointments he has made to these high positions. Everybody should now be careful in making the right choice for the next regime

Crazy Old Man is correct -it is only because sri lankans have a low IQ that they let chaps like Ranil lead them.In any other country by now Ranil would be out of the UNP.

I think our average IQ would have been much lower but it is kept at this level only because of the extrodinarily high IQs of Crazy Old Man (IQ-2500) and Ranil(IQ-10000) ! Although Ranil has not done anything too well-everything about him -speeches,lectures, articles on various things, ministries, leadership of UNP all very mediocre -crazy old man thinks Ranil is all brains and maybe all muscle too!

There is nothing done by Ranil ever which shows exceptional IQ or abilities. Only crazy old men say these things.

What committee is he talking about ? What are these committees? Even MR had Tender committees . Were they acting independently ? How come 80% of the Bonds were bought by the Governors son in law ? Why did Bank of Ceylon give so much money to another primary dealer to make a quick buck ?

In the coming elections there is only one question before us

Is the way Ranil handled the Mahendran affair right ? Was Arjun Mahendran acting in the best interest of 21 million people? If you think so vote for the UNP. If not you know what to do.

No other examples needed to prove that the majority of politicians from both SLFP and UNP who ruled the country after independance are all rogues. At a very critical phase Ranil got disrobed himself. Piyal
