Parliamentarian of the Joint Opposition Dullas Alahapperuma today declared that for the sake of the people’s rights, their group must be recognized as Independent MPs, and must not be discriminated by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.
The statement was made after a group of MPs staged a protest within parliament, demanding that they be recognized as an independent group. The group consists of Mahinda Rajapaksa loyalists. However the speaker reportedly noted that this is an issue which the UPFA has to address and thus this matter should be resolved within the party, and not through parliament.
Allahapperuma also complained that despite their continuously requests for many months, the speaker has refused to recognize them as an independent group in Parliament.

The Parliament at present consists of UNP government members and UPFA government members, TNA opposition members (appointed by the government) who voted for the budget and JVP opposition members who support the government tacitly.
Who hold’s the government to account in Parliament?
Who will question the Ministers in parliament?
Who is there to be critical and criticise government wrong doing?
Whether Dullas is corrupt or not, lacky or not, silencing the opposition in Parliament is a blow to democracy.

“Recognition as an Independent Group”. No Problem. Resign from the political party you contested and won, and submit a letter to the Speaker stating that you would be sitting in Parliament as an “Independent”. That must be done by each and every individual sitting MP who wishes to be treated as an Independent. Don’t you understand that it is the simple logical thing to do. Unless and until you do that the Speaker has no RIGHT to recognize a “Group” as an “independent Group”. But remember, when that is done, there is NO GROUP , but only Individual Independent Members sitting in Parliament. That will not prevent you sitting in Parliament as Independent Members; but NOT as the Official Opposition.
On the other hand, WHY all this fuss? You have decided to form a NEW Political Party and when that is done you have to resign from the previous party or you will be SACKED from the membership of that previous party. But still you have no RIGHT to claim Official Opposition status in Parliament. How about joining your colleagues in NFF of Mr.Wimal Weerawansa; MEP of Mr. Dinesh Gunawardane; PHU of Mr. Udaya Gammanpila or that “Junk Shop” NLSSP of Mr. Vasudeva Nanayakkara without this NEW POLITICAL PART? That is more “Painless” to commit “Suicide”than this formation of new parties. Then all of you can have a “SUICIDAL PARTY” that will be supplied free with all the “HOT STUFF” that some of your prominent colleagues have been TRADING without any hindrance from your supposed to be “Leader”- MR. There is only one way the group could be recognized – it needs to form itself into a new party. The SLFP position is that it is part of the government.If this ‘joint opposition’ cannot abide by party policy, it should as a matter of principle – if they have such a thing – leave it. The Joint Opposition with its 50+ members do not have a voice. The current Leader heads a 15 member group and is ONLY interested in the North and East. The problems of the people are thus at the mercy of the “Unity Government” which has no place in the Constitution. What IS RECOGNIZED in the Constitution’s 19th Amendment is a NATIONAL GOVERNMENT THAT REPRESENTS ALL PARTIES IN PARLIAMENT.
The current Parliament is thus a SHAM and the business it conducts has no validity as it is comprised contrary to the Constitution and its actions are clearly without respect to the Constitution which is bent whichever way is needed to accomplish the Unity Govt objectives.
It is an utter shame and and insult to Democracy for this Parliament to even consider calling itself DEMOCRATIC.
The PEOPLE are completely without recourse or Parliamentary voice.
