Former UPFA Parliamentarian, Sajin de Vass Gunawardena was released on bail today by the Colombo Chief Magistrate, while also imposing a travel ban on him. He was released on a cash bail of Rs. 500,000 and four sureties of Rs. 5 million each in a case where he allegedly defrauded a private company Rs, 600 million.

He was arrested by the CID in June subsequent to a complaint lodged by a businessman, who is the Director of the company, claiming that Gunawardena had swindled millions of rupees from the company.
He is also out on bail in another case where he allegedly misused some 26 vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat during former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s term.
Gunawardena, a one time loyalist of Rajapaksa, switched sides and extended support to incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena following Rajapaksa’s defeat at last year’s presidential election.
