Sirisena’s Choice: SLFP “Hand” Or Queen’s Hand?

By H.L.D. Mahindapala

H. L. D. Mahindapala

On January 8th, 2015 the nation elected Maithripala Sirisena believing that he would make a difference. His main task was to preside over the constitutional transition from a presidential system to a parliamentary system. To impress that he was not craving for power he promised to be the one-term caretaker president who will be happy performing his ceremonial duties.

So far he has failed to do his main task of changing the presidency into a parliamentary democracy as promised. Even the Supreme Court has knocked him back on this issue. And he is not quite sure whether Parliament too would go along with him to make the necessary constitutional changes. But, in the meantime, he has gone as far as he could by handing over substantial powers to the two biggest failures in post-independent political history — 1. Ranil Wickremesinghe and 2. Chandrika Kumaratunga.

This is like handing over a plane packed with Sri Lankan passengers to two mentally incapacitated pilots: no one can trust either one of them even to go to the toilet leaving the other in the cockpit. Sri Lankans are now flying in a plane piloted by two risky operators with no licence of competence to drive even a bullock cart. Their earlier experiments in flying the CFA and P-TOMS planes were shot to pieces in mid-air by their trusted peace partner, Prabhakaran.

Then as now, both posed as if they alone possessed the magic formula to solve the nation’s problems. Then as now, the Tamil leadership led them up the garden path. It was easy for the Tamil leadership to hoodwink both Wickremesinghe and Kumaratunga because neither of them could read the prevailing weather conditions nor the ground situation.

When leaders fail it is the people who have to pay for their stupidity. The cost of paying for the failures of Wickremesinghe and Kumaratunga was too much for the people to bear. Subsequently, they got even with them by refusing to hand over power to them. They had to piggy-back on the shoulders of Sirisena to creep into the seats of power they occupy now.

Hopes rose again in the hearts of people when Sirisena won the presidency. But that was short-lived. The people who had high expectations of the new President delivering his promises suddenly discovered that they were lumbered with the same old tired faces of bankrupt Wickremesinghe and Kumaratunga. They found that instead of landing in the promised political nirvana within 100 days they were taken for the biggest ride in their lives.

There is no doubt that Wickremesinghe and CBK were good at plotting and overthrowing the Rajapaksa regime. Having accomplished their first step of grabbing power their next mission should have been to prove that they are better than the Rajapakses in running the state. But within the vaunted “100 days” they have come a cropper.

Maverick Rajiva Wijesinha was the first minister to resign from the Wickremesinghe – Kumaratunga regime. He is putting Wickremesinghe, his first cousin, through the shredder exposing the hypocrisies, incompetence, double-standards and the general failure to live up to promises, written and unwritten, of the “My-3” regime.

Tissa Karalliyadda too resigned because he could not work with the UNP with a clear conscience, he said. He was also pressured by his constituents who were asking him to show the “difference” promised by the new regime.

The finger points directly to Wickremesinghe –Kumaratunga combo who are usurping the powers of the President. The President too is responsible for the failure because he is letting things happen under his nose by giving his silent nod. He gives the impression of running a paralyzed presidency. Mainly he seems to be inhibited by his obligation to “Sir” Wickremesinghe and “Madam” Kumaratunga. He is still paralyzed by the mindset of January 9 when waves of gratitude swept him off his feet. He still feels obliged to “Sir” Wickremesinghe and “Madam” Kumaratunga, his manipulative minders, for maneuvering him into the Presidential seat.

Unfortunately, President’s misplaced sense of gratitude is making him look like a puppet in the hands of these two manipulators. The tragedy is that the President has handed over his powers to two discards who do not have the mandate to wield power at the center. Neither of them represent the people in the sense that Sirisena represents the people as their chosen representative to lead the nation. People have vested power in him and they expect him to do fulfill his job as promised. But he has gone the way of all flesh. The difference (when-a-suck) he promised has not materialized though the 100 days are up. Failure to transfer power to Parliament is one thing. It is even excusable considering the obstacles that stand in the way which they should have seen before making promises.

But his failure to deliver the clean administration – the primary slogan on which he rode in to power – is inexcusable. He has appointed his brother to the top job in Sri Lanka Telecom. His son is now a permanent fixture in his foreign entourage. His son-in-law is planted in the Ministry of Defence. His daughter is also shown as an item in the Foreign Ministry. So was he faking the sadhu part he put on to win the votes on January 8th ? Is he not guilty of violating the fourth precept in the Panchaseela?

While he is tending his domestic patch with paternal he has handed over powers of ministerial and administrative appointment to Wickremesinghe and Kumaratunga. None of these has enhanced the credibility and viability of the “My-3” regime. Sirisena has lost the initial advantage of being a viable alternative to the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime.

The major political steps taken so far carry all the hallmarks of events manipulated by the two discards behind the throne. Realizing his inability to hang on to power, even with Kumaratunga and the President behind him, a nervous Wickremesinghe is now begging foreign governments to help him. (See his article in Japan Times – April, 8, 2015)

Wickremesinghe’s over–reliance on his Western friends to rescue him from impending disasters is as short-sighted as his reliance on his former partner, Prabhakaran, to end the war and restore peace. The West is cock-a-hoop that there is a regime in Sri Lanka now willing to be their puppet state. John Kerry crowed that Sri Lanka is a success story of their foreign putsch. But can Uncle Sam and the Brown Sahibs of India save Sirisena’s “Sir” and “Madam” if push comes to a shove? For instance, when “Sir” was Prime Minister under “Madam” President Wickremesinghe went round the world with a begging bowl. He even met George Soros. How much did he get from them?

It is apparent that the sudden rush of blood to Wickremesinghe’s head, with high expectations of all the presidential powers falling into his lap has made him lose his balance. He has unleashed his wrath on Australia and even threatened to shoot Indian fishermen. He named journalists who had supported the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa – a veiled threat to free media. He even threatened to strike down businessmen who are in the opposite camp. But he was brought down to earth when he was defeated on the floor of the House – his bear pit where he has to fight for survival. Bluffing, as usual, to dissolve Parliament if he was defeated in the House – a power which he does not possess – he could do nothing when the part of the SLFP that is not with Sirisena threw out the critical finance bill.

As for Chandrika Kumaratunga, she was defeated long time ago by the then Chief Justice who ruled that she can’t extend her term by changing the date of her swearing in. She represents nobody except her bitter hate of the Rajapaksas. Ever since power was transferred to these two political twins, the vaunted “Yaha-pala-naya” has been running on the hate politics of Chandrika Kumaratunga and the usual incompetence of Wickremesinghe. And the people are made to pay through their noses for their mega million failures.

In his typical bumbling way, Wickremesinghe blundered by appointing Arjuna Mahendran as the Governor of the Central Bank much against the wishes of President Sirisena. This was meant to be his big move to win the confidence of the global investors and save the economy. But it landed him flat on his face.

They are doomed to fail because they refuse to learn from their past. With the mega-million bond scandal which came crashing down on Wickremesinghe’s back, Mahendra has not only ruined the image of “yaha-pala-naya” but blown to smithereens his “Uncle’s” theory that power in the hands of the prime minister in parliament is better than power in the hands of the president. Wickremesinghe took over the Central Bank and the Department of Census and Statistics from the President promising to clean up both institutions and make the “bastards honest”, to quote a famous Australian political expression. But Wickremesinghe today is faced with (1) his favourite “nephew” answering questions at the Bribery Commission on the biggest financial scandal since the Central Bank was established in 1950 and (2) charges for violating emigration laws in Singapore, his home base.

But this hasn’t fazed Wickremesinghe. He is quite happy to carry on with his co-partner, Kumaratunga, playing their ends against the middle of Sirisena. They are happy to let Sirisena do the ceremonial part (example: shaking the ungloved hand of the Queen abroad) while they usurp his powers at home. So far the President has not woken up to the fact that the two manipulators are pushing him into a corner from which he cannot get out. They know that jointly they can push Sirisena into any corner of their choice, both at home and abroad, though Sirisena can’t do the same to them unless he gets Mahinda Rajapaksa to join him. He is dependent on Wickremesinghe and Kumaratunga because he has abandoned his inherited and natural political base in the SLFP. Until the results of the coming elections are known Sirisena will be puttee in the hands Wickremesinghe-Kumaratunga duo.

He has managed to triumph so far because the Southerners have seen only the “pirith noola” on his right hand and not the Don Juan Dharmapala hiding inside his upsaka national costume. Like Dharmapala he is elated that he had been anointed by the Queen in London. Right now he is lost between the al-lay-, val-lay, pal-lay, gum-may roots and shaking the (ungloved!) hand of the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

Sirisena, when he came home, told the SLFP top-rung, with glee and pride, of how he shook the ungloved hand of the Queen. He is mistaken if he thinks that he has won over England with a handshake. It is not the Queen’s hand that is going to save him. It is the “hand” of the SLFP that lifted him that will save him.

Queen’s handshake is only a cosmetic exercise. It is her ministers and her loyal opposition who will fix Sirisena. Predictably, they have treated him as a colonial boy mesmerized by the ungloved hand offered by the Queen. Both David Cameron and Ed Milliband have told the Tamils that they have given a piece of their mind to Sirisena and asked him to behave. Following the political dictates of the Tamil lobby they have sworn that they will make Sri Lanka pay for crushing the deadliest terrorist outfit of the world.

So where does the Queen’s handshake leave Sirisena? Can he rely on that when he has the “hand” that gave him everything he has in life? He grew up with the SLFP “hand” – the symbol that gave hope to a fallen nation. It is also the hand that lifted him up from the al-lay, val-lay, pal-lay, gum-may roots to what he is today. It is the hand of Bandaranaike that lifted the nation from the depths of colonial oppression and denial of the nation’s heritage. The choice before Sirisena is simple: will he genuflect and kiss the hand of the Queen or rise with the historic hand of Bandaranaike that defined the nation and the way to the future?

Sirisena’s hundred days are over. Time is running out. The SLFPers who owe their gratitude to the historic legacy of Bandaranaike are out of his fold. Sirisena is paralyzed because he still feels he is obliged to Wickremesinghe and Chandrika Kumaratunga, the renegade daughter who climbed on the coffin of Bandaranaike to claim votes but not his historic legacy. But where can his “Sir” and “Madam” take him?

The questionable role of Sirisena has divided the SLFP into (1) the S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike camp allied to the Left-wing and (2) Wickremesinghe camp aided and abetted by the Right-wing Chandrika Kumaratunga allied to the American-Anglo-Indian camp.

But the people voted for Maithripala Sirisena who has yet to fulfill his promises. For instance, he promised never to betray the heroic al-lay, val-lay, pal-lay, gum-may youth who fought for him and protected him when he was Acting Minister of Defence. His loyalty to Wickremesinghe-Kumaratunga combo can only take him back to CFA and P-TOMS, or revised versions of these failures. This is also what the Queen’s ministers and the Indian sahibs want.

According to a TV report in Ada Derana Sirisena has confessed to overwhelming pressures coming from the West and India. He has said that he can’t give in to what Modi wants nor can he not give into them. One can understand the pressures he is facing. But not his inability to decide on his course of action.

This is an issue that needs another essay. But for the moment, it is suffice to say that the answer is in his hands. As President he has to answer one question : what does he want? We all know what India and the West wants. We also know what Wickremesinghe and Kumaratunga wants. What we don’t know is what he wants.

The people elected him to defend the nation. Mahinda Rajapaksa won the heart of the nation because he defended the nation against foreign interventions. Whose heart can Sirisena win if he gives in to what the West, India, Wickremesinghe and Kumaratunga want?

Whilst I agree on a major share of the article, Sri Lankan journalists must resist repeating what their consider their own cleverness – case in point, the Sir and Madam adage.

Just to clarify, the queen does NOT wear gloves when entertaining at her residence except at state banquets. Her shaking hand without gloves can be seen in many examples – from Rugby teams to pop singers – by visiting Google images.

I start my day few hours ago, the new that Mahinda Jaapakshe is questioned by BC made my day. I had been waiting this move since the Jan 8th. Why should MR be held above the law. He is a citizen of SL even if he was the former president. If the charges are there against him, why not he be questioned is the question for all of us. Those rogues that protest against MR and GR being questioned- are the abusive portion of the UPFA. Above all the I wonder senior leftist being joined to them. Vasudewa proves his true colours that he is no longer fair man to the society. We are all under the law. That can then given an example to the nation. That is howthey the buggers shold interpret it. Even Angela Merkel or UK s conunterpart would be ready at once for such questioning. Why not abusive MR ?

What Mahindapala says is Sri lankan system completely overhauled. So that, Presidential elections and general election should be conducted atr the same time.

Otherwise, how can this be Maitirpala regime. Why should Maithripala Sirisena should have Mahinda Rajapakkse’s gang of thieves, cabinet or non cabinet ministers.

Mahinda Rajapakse, CBK and Ranil are in the same boat. they all are disasters to Sri lanka. It is Mahinda Rajapakse who helped to eastablish first Catholic saint in Sri lanka. It is Mahinda Rajapakse who blamed the Astrologer, RAW, US, UK for his inability to win the hearts of majority sinhala people.

Un like Mahinda Rajapakse, Maitripala Sirisena is a honest and humble man. It looks there is no need of a 19th amendment because, the president is honest.

IF the leader is a thug and a plunderer of public resources and wealth, every body in his regime behaves the same way and they are a disaster to the country.

HLD., Your whole argument hinges on this one statement. After so many years of “journalism,” this is the best you could come up with? This bullshit is the shamelessly absurd propaganda line the thieves, murderers and charlatants who were ousted from power by the people on January 8th are currently using in their desperate attempt to recapture power before they are punished by law. Desperate crooks like Weerawansa, Gammanpila, Aluthgamage, Abeygoonewardena, Tiran Alles, Duminda Silva proffer such absurd lines. But what are you so desperate for?

“A lot of wishful thinking in the hope that MR will benefit by this piece of writing?”

That is precisely the reason why the Sri lankan Version of the Common Sense Pamphlet is needed to expose these Liars, Crooks, Robbers, Criminals, Shill and Cronies, just like what Thomas Paine did for the Americans in 1776.

      Expose, expose and expose.

      Common Sense (pamphlet)

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Sense_%28pamphlet%29

Common Sense[1] is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775–76 that inspired people in the Thirteen Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776. The pamphlet explained the advantages of and the need for immediate independence in clear, simple language. It was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution and became an immediate sensation. It was sold and distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and meeting places.

Washington had it read to all his troops, which at the time had surrounded the British army in Boston. In proportion to the population of the colonies at that time (2.5 million), it had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history.[2] As of 2006, it remains the all-time best selling American title.[3]

Common Sense presented the American colonists with an argument for freedom from British rule at a time when the question of whether or not to seek independence was the central issue of the day. Paine wrote and reasoned in a style that common people understood. Forgoing the philosophical and Latin references used by Enlightenment era writers, he structured Common Sense as if it were a sermon, and relied on Biblical references to make his case to the people.[4] He connected independence with common dissenting Protestant beliefs as a means to present a distinctly American political identity.[5] Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as “the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era”.[6]

My. ….pala must understand that President Sirisena Was not elected for only 100 days but a full term of 6 years which he is reducing get to 5 years. Why this old, MR crony, so vulgar about shaking hands with the Queen . Two weeks ago he wrote on the same subject. I believe in his wild dreams he must enter shaking hands with the queen.

Do not worry whether 19A gets passed or not elections will be held soon and a stable government established and all the third grade ones would be thrown away and no chance of MR returning to power.
There will be enough to handle with BC, special police investigation unit,
Courts and all these discarded ones can spend time doing this.

    Hi HLDM

Can you comprehend Rs0.00 is better than -Rs1.00M. If you compare the running of the country between the two, Mahinda and Maithiri, this is what we those who live here see, sir. Even if Maithiri does nothing, it is much much better than what Mahinda and his family did. They are not one but many like termite, biting from every nooks and corners, bring down the country to its knee. Alas, Maithiri took a greatest risk in his life and save the country, others even dare to think. I am proud to see we have still a few people to stand up for what they believe is right.

Other issue, might be hard to comprehend for you, is MS’s victory was ensured largely by Ranil and CBK voter base, and it was for a clean man comes out of the Mahinda’s muddied Govt. There were UNP votes, fair minded and level headed well educated SLFP/JVP/JHU votes who saw what its worth (MR’s govt)and minorities votes that saw MS victory. The votes went to your hero were from nothing other than the ones who were the direct beneficiaries of MR’s regime, the criminals whose roaming at large was at risk without MR has been on top job, the rest were those who drive extreme amount of pleasure at seeing/feeling/hearing minorities being persecuted in the name of smart or dump patriotic phobia at MR/Gotta’s hands. Under this scenario, if you are in MS position what would you do?. A simple but real question.. Would you renegade on what was agreed in the partnership you forged before the election or listen to Ranil and CBK?. If you are trying to find reasons why Maithiri does what he has been doing and explain why he is struggling to go ahead doing things that he promised to do to our readers, you will be seen as un holding journalistic ethic some what at the least otherwise your effort would be seen as an attempt to spin some stories, and you would place yourselves in one of the categories that voted for MR, although you are living overseas.

What a bulls..t theory from this P.H. (guess). This PH was sending similar sort of mentally restarted analysis to UN/UNHRC against LTTE in the last 20 years from Australia. When we read his silly arguments here, it is easy to understand why UN rejected those and pressed for independent investigation.. UN/UNHRC might have assumed that most of SL people are mentally imbalance PH like this mahindapala..

This PH is living with Australian government benefits. He claims that West including Aus plotting against SL. Aus Gov foreign aid allocation was about $9b (now reduced to $5b) which was equivalent to SL Gov total revenue.. Does this PH know these..
@MS, Please, just for one time, send a white van (plane) to pick this guy and rehabilitate along with LTTE suspects..

This is one writer I dont have much reagards on his political views.Neverthless this is onetime I have to agree on the views in TOTO.What he had stated is simply the stark truth.
We didnt elect MS as president for the love of him or of conviction that he is the best person suitable for the Job based on his credentials. All what we wanted was to see the end of MR era and if not for the help from Minority groups a victory would not have been possible though RW and his cohorts would like to think otherwise.
MS now has to ensure that he at least try to perform the duties entrusted to him by the majority of people without being manipulated by RW or CBK.If MS think he should be grateful to any who jettisoned him to the Presidency its the people he should be thinking of instead of RW or CBK.
Failure to do so would doom him as possibly the weakest ever President this country has ever known

“We didnt elect MS as president for the love of him or of conviction that he is the best person suitable for the Job based on his credentials.”

No one in this island vote for the right virtuous person with integrity, honesty, secular credential, wisdom, ability, ……….. And no person with such qualities ever want to be a politician as the political culture abhor him/her, not conducive environment for them to get in. Once they are in they are house trained and become native within this culture.

The weakest was Dingiri Banda Wijethunga…. MS is smarter..way smarter.. give him his personal space he would come up good.. he is a simple human being than that of the loser whom we sent home… He did not contest for the sheer greed of power, but to send a NOTORIOUS DICTATOR home… that ONE thing itself is enough.. which RW couldn’t do by ballots…

I also appreciate his shortening his term from 6 yrs to 4 which was extended to 5 …

As for now he is my hero and MR is A BIG ZERO…

Mahinda’s Pala writes: “As President he has to answer one question : what does he (MS) want? We all know what India and the West wants. We also know what Wickremesinghe and Kumaratunga wants. What we don’t know is what he wants.”

How come you are so prescient about what individuals “want” in some instances and yet fall short about others’ wants? Not consulting that astrologer of MR’s are you? If so, that would explain your tiresome verbiage in your non-stop assault on our senses about MR & Co. in the hope of a return of a corrupt regime.

So tell us readers, what is it that YOU “want”?

Are YOU really keen on having the MR administration back, given the latter’s record of blatant nepotism, near-total impunity, white vans, disappearances of critics, mass-scale corruption, bogus mega-projects, etc., etc.? If so, please give us your rationale for your incessant pleas and so-called justification for your non-stop drivel in favor of MR. I hope you have the guts to do this and reveal YOUR ‘real’ agenda, otherwise you should shut the fook up and go away.

Better still, answer the question of your support for a corrupt and nepotistic administration whose idea of “good governance” is ripping off the country and its citizens, the absence of Human Rights and no (what is understood as) ‘rule of law’.

Having said that, I doubt you will rise to this challenge to justify your adoration of MR and his coterie of thieves, being the transparent fraud you are.

I put this question to Dayan J (Tweedledumb to your Tweedledee) as well, but predictably he evaded answering. Hopefully you will answer the questions and not drift into irrelevance, if you would, please.

Once again HLDM the mirror image of Dayan De Silva /Jayatilleke is spinning.
I wonder whether HLDM wrote the above piece before reading or after reading Tissaranee Gunasekera’s elightening factual analysis in the CT.

TG and DJ are living in SL. But HLDM you are part of the Sinhalese Diaspora first and Sri Lankan diaspora later mindset living in one of the Commonwealth Countries.

HLDM can you reveal the strength of the Sinhalese Diaspora out of the Sri Lankan Diaspora in the Commonwealth countries and other Western Countries ? Also can you reveal the strength of the Sinhalese Diaspora in China, Russia , East European countries, Pakistan and Iindia ?
Which countries they are earning well and holding fairly good positions ?

HLDM, Why not you do an open credible survey to show how many in the Sinhalese Diaspora from Australia and the West wants your MR to come back and are prepared to go back to SriLanka and live under MaRa regime ?

Once you prove your points with such survey then I accept you have more wisdom and intellect than the beggar from Galle who successfully bet and proved MaRa praisers were wrong.

Please do not waste time responding to HLDM’s articles. His is taking all of you for one big bite. He is a citizen of Australia where the Queen is the Head of State.

[Edited out] has opened his mouth again. More crap and fart coming from this [Edited out] who has nothing to do in Australia and is trying to cry for his supper. The [Edited out] know that he is the laughing stock of the Colombo intelligentsia and the same old statements and cliches made by this [Edited out] hardly have any impact on the reader who sees this discard at the lowest levels of respect and highest levels of disgrace. Good luck to you [Edited out]pala, keep on dreaming that your corrupt despot who has been disgraced may one day come back to power. RW and CBK with MS will bring back respect to this country while imbeciles and ratbags like you will continue to feed on the sewerage that your great leader discharges.

On January 8th, 2015 the nation elected Maithripala Sirisena ……

But that is impossible. Didn’t you say that ‘Sirisena’ would never win? Our Mahindapala has never been proved wrong.

No. I don’t believe that ‘what did you call him then’ had a Buckley’s chance!!!!

Is that why the bugger lost by 490,000 (Four hundred and ninety thousand)votes. Of the 5.8 million, I wonder whether he could garner even 2 million today, because more than half of the 5.8 mil is hora votes. Want to bet?

I second that…… now that he is NOT in power and cant USE and ABUSE state machinery like Sri-Lankan Airlines,TRC Rupavahini and others. He would most get is 1.8 mil that too from some people who are already dead…

MR lost the count but won the elections according to Dayan and he believes only the Sinhala/Buddhists votes count.

“””Mahinda Rajapaksa won the heart of the nation because he defended the nation against foreign interventions.”””

and he lost those same hearts when he let the family, his cronies, the hangers-on and common crooks steal the nation’s silver!

HLD, our world has moved on. Better for you to try and find some peace in retirement instead of peddling old horse crap for our amusement.

Bravo, Mr. Mahindapala, Bravo. There are so few even among Sinhalese these days who voice to protect the rights of the Sinhalese. You have always done an admirable job in expressing the glory of the Sinhala race, and that of the rightful President and King of the Sinhala nation, Mahinda Rajapakse.

Mr. Mahindapala, I hope you have a few beautiful daughters, or at least that your wife is still hale and fit. Because when MR comes to power again, he and the princes can then reward you for your patriotism by recruiting your daughters or wife into Sri Lankan airlines. I am sure you and your family wouldn’t mind providing all services you can to the King of the Sinhalese and his family: after all, you are a patriot.

Oh, but then again, you wouldn’t have to do that, because patriot that you are, you live in Australia. It is the daughters of some poor Sinhala farmer who would be called upon to provide the required services. Therefore let us continue to shout for the return of Thrisinhaladeeswara Mahinda Rajapakse.

Have you come across the word ‘shame’?
