Spectators were left shocked when Chief Guest and Sri Lankan Ambassador to Qatar A.S.P. Liyanage introduced Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s sons Yoshitha and Rohitha as ‘honourable’ at the introduction of CH & FC’s team prior to their game against the Doha Rugby Football Club in Doha yesterday.Due to the current blockade imposed by Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates,. Egypt and Bahrain, the Doha Rugby Football Club is inviting overseas teams to play friendly rugby encounters in Doha.
Many Sri Lankan expatriates who thronged the Doha RFC grounds were left miffed by Ambassador Liyanage’s introduction of the CH and FC rugby team and especially the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s sons. This is despite the visiting CH & FC rugby club pulling off a remarkable victory after trailing at half time.
Spectators were later heard taunting ‘Honorable Porter’ when Ambassador Liyanage handed over the winner’s trophy to Yoshitha Rajapaksa. Yoshitha Rajapaksa currently has several criminal charges heard against him in several courts in Sri Lanka.
Two days ago the Sri Lankan Ambassador ASP Liyanage was exposed by Colombo Telegraph when he greeted the CH and FC rugby team on their arrival, and was seen carrying the Rajapaksa sons’ bags and having them chauffeur driven to the Mercure Grande Hotel while the rest of the team had to travel in the team bus.
While Ambassador ASP Liyanage was seen carrying Rohitha Rajapaksa’s bag, Sri Lanka Embassy official and Minister Rajitha Senaratna’s close associate Ruwan Dananasooriya was pictured pushing a trolley containing Yoshitha Rajapaksa’s bags.
The game itself was a thrilling encounter yesterday, when CH and FC came back from behind, after trailing 8 /12 at half time to record a remarkable victory 17/15 when former Antonian Samuel Maduwantha put over a 20 meter penalty with five minutes to go before the final whistle.

I watched the match . It was a real patriotism by Sri Lankans men, women, children who came to witness the match in large numbers to cheer CH & FC to ensure a great win. It was a tough match in conditions not favourable to Sri Lankan team. We thank every Sri Lankan who cheered loud and clear to see CH wins the match. All players played a great match to show their team spirit.
We cannot understand Ambassadors behaviour and attitude as to how he treated two key players with extra words and attachment. I feel its unfair by the two players who never expected such extra attention as all 15 palyers played like a real family..
I think hospitality extended by Doha Rugby club was great at their home grounds. We are happy that Doha also have a strong team. We are sure CH will invite them to Colombo for a back to back match which should become an annual encounter.
We thank CH team lead by Yoshitha giving such an entertainment to Sri Lankan well to do expats who usually see only Football matches gather such crowds in this country.
Keep politics away from Sports to disgrace young players and sports clubs with unproved political allegations. No crowd was worried about politics except cheered to win the match. It was such an honour.

I’m not a fan of rugby but I’m a big fan of professional football. As a kid I have played cricket, football, volleyball, rounders (elle), kabaddi (we used a different name those days) and badminton, all on the compound we had those days in front of my ancestral village home (now the entire compound almost 80 perches including our cricket pitch is taken over by a relative by producing false documents during our absence in the village for which a new court case is in the offing) and also I played some card games and board games; checkers, carom, all taught by my late father who excelled in outdoor sports/indoor sports in his youth, including table tennis. Only thing we couldn’t learn was table tennis, which he called “ping-pong” as we didn’t have a table tennis-table at home. Hands down, I am a big supporter of sports. I’ve written comments elsewhere asking the authorities to give the same prominence that they grant to cricket, to other sports such as football, volleyball, basketball and kabaddi, all in which village kids and youth, even some seniors are very good. I’ve a proposal to be given to the next President whoever he is, a part of which I’ve written to LCN in 2015, to bring our less prominent sports and recreational activities to a new level. Too bad our politicians pay less attention to sports which are popular in villages. All prominence and support are given to sports/sports clubs popular among the wealthy and elites while village sports/sports clubs and even sports clubs of underprivileged kids/youth in Colombo/suburbs, lagging behind due to lack of funds and equipment!
