Bandula Jayasekara
There is to our knowledge no governance around the use of social media by Sri Lanka’s foreign service, and Jayasekara’s Twitter account conveniently conflates personal opinion with official positions. On Thursday, 10th July alone, Jayasekara went after and included in his abominable invective journalists Callum Macrae, Frances Harrison, UK MP Alistair Burt, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Editor of the Colombo Telegraph website and Senior TNA MP R. Sampanthan.
Jayasekara’s tweets and retweets over the course of Thursday alone featured the following language and sentiments,
- White tigress (referring to Frances Harrison)
- A bloody prick (referring to photographer and blogger Asanka Ratnayake, resident in Australia)
- Stray dogs (referring to Callum MacRae, though Jayasekara couched it as something he had read on the Derana website)
- Racist scum (a retweet, originally by @sittingnut and against Callum MacRae)
- Mercenary & “member of the rump” (referring to Callum MacRae)
- Chief Propagandist of LTTE rump (referring to Callum MacRae)
- MacRae and his blood money (allegation against the Colombo Telegraph website)
- “mud raking insulting attacking website” (referring to Colombo Telegraph)
- bunch of losers and cowards
- podiyan (referring to TNA MP R. Sampathan)

The government should not block the entry of Callum MacRae to the country.
Instead it should immediately issue a statement to the effect that should Callum MacRae apply for an appropriate VISA it would be considered as any other. Callum MacRae is on a publicity drive cooking up a VISA controversy. After the man lands here, he should be given police protection throughout his visit.
However, people should be given the freedom to make sure he cannot even take one foot out of his vehicle! We are a democratic country and people have the right to protest against journalists that they believe are in the pay role of terrorists.
We should learn from the British and the LTTE rump. If 100,000+ Tamils can prevent a visiting head of state from attending to his business in a foreign country, why is it that 15 million or so Sinhala people subject a foreign journalist to even worst humiliation in their own country? If Tiger supporters can corner MR in a hotel in London people here can certainly keep Callum MacRae boxed inside his vehicle for a few days without even been able to go to the loo!
I’m quite certain, even if he is given a VISA and protection from the law, Callum MacRae is not going come here. He is not a damn fool. He knows what awaits him here.

Before that when he was in Canada he started to say he was in Toronto to bring all SRi Lankan communities together, but he was acting a “racist”. Even Trinitians who were supporting him started to stay away from him. They did not even want to invite him for the Trinity Dance in Toronto. His “boy” (the way he calls his help) did not return with him when he left Toronto.

I also listened to his interviews several times, most of them unfortunately his is often one sided views though supporting the rulers for no acceptable reasons. I know this should be their duties being loyal to their masters, but anyways, forgetting what his role should be to go on saying that he would not allow that particular to enter the country is absolutely beyond the margins. His arguments are MOSTLY not based on the facts -miles away from senior diplomats like of DJ and Tamara Kulanayagam. These are clear consequences of wrong posts. In this incident, no doubt, Jayasekara seems to have exaggerated a bit. This is only typical to many of them being pseudo diplomats without diplomatic finesse.
We should not allow Journalists like Macrae but the regime should have to produce sufficient arguments respecting the international norms.

Why should we not let Macrae come to Sri Lanka? Are we so scared of him or are we scared that he will bring more dirt out in the open? If we say we are a democratic country we have to let him in. If his movies have stated incorrect information, its the duty of the government to prove that he is wrong. Without doing that, blocking Macrae further proves that the government is at fault. The damage done by Bandula by blocking former leader of the Liberal Party in Canada Bob Rae coming to Sri Lanka and holding him up at the Colombo airport and sending him back is a barbaric act. Bandula had to run away from Toronto because of that. By the way Bob Rae was given a visa to visit but was held up at the airport in Colombo.

Sri Lanka is not a big country to divide into several parts as other countries. People in all parts of the country, including the North and East should live together, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.
“The people in all parts of the country including the North and East should shed narrow political ideologies and live together as a single country,” the President said.
He said the government led by him has taken serious efforts to restore democracy in the Northern and Eastern provinces by holding local Government election, Parliament election and Presidential election and arrangements are in place to hold the Provincial Council election in the Northern province.
“No country, where this type of conflict prevailed, was able to heal the wounds of the people and restore normality as fast as Sri Lanka,” he said.
The President was speaking at the handing over of compensation to residents of the Northern province affected due to violence.
The programme was jointly organised by the Rehabilitation Authority and the Prisons Reforms and Rehabilitation Ministry.
Over 712 persons whose family members were killed in violence in the province received compensation from the President while 236 persons whose properties were destroyed due to the conflict also received compensation.
Compensation was also granted to places of religious worship in the province. Compensation worth Rs. 900 million were distributed among them yesterday.
The ministry granted compensation worth Rs. 500 million to families affected by violent activities in the province so far while over 1,000 people will receive compensation by the end of this year.
President Rajapaksa said a number of countries faced this type of violence, but Sri Lanka is the only country where compensation was granted to the people affected by violence.
“We are proud of developing the country within a very short span of time,” he said.
He said the government launched a massive programme to heal the wounds of the people affected by terrorism and promote reconciliation.
President Rajapaksa said people in all parts of the country were affected by terrorism that engulfed the nation for more than 30 years.
He said the government led by him succeeded in creating an environment in which people of all communities could live in peace and harmony through eradication of terrorism.
The students in the North and East can pursue their school and university education now. The government has rebuilt the infrastructure facilities devastated by the terrorists in these areas, the President said.
He said life in the North and East has returned to normal.
President Rajapaksa said the government took tremendous efforts to demine areas dotted with landmines and booby traps.
Prisons Reforms and Rehabilitation Minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera, Jaffna District Parliamentarian Chandrakumar Murugesu, Rehabilitation Authority Chairman G.A. Samarasainghe and Senior Minister Professor Tissa Vitharana were also present.

It would be hard for most sane people to refute that Callum Macrae and Frances Harrison are biased in their reporting. These are low-level journalists looking for break by little Sri Lanka.
BUT, Bandula Jayasekera is a diplomat representing our country. Therefore by definition diplomacy is expected of him. His uncouth, ill conceived and useless tweets are far from diplomatic.
They provide unnecessary publicity to Macrae and Harrison, perfectly plays into the hands of the anti Sr Lankan camps and further undermines the standing of the Sri Lankan government. All of this with no tangible benefit to anyone but Bandula’s seemingly fragile ego.
Unfortunately with Rajapaksas’ nepotistic systematic decimation of the civil service and their fear of intellectuals, only goofs like this are left to represent out country.

Callum McRae and Frances Harrison are low level journalists? They are well known and well established journalists. The former is an award winning journalist and documentary maker and the latter a former foreign correspondent for the BBC.
For the supporters of the war criminals these journalists are biased because they brought the truth out into the open for every one to see and hear. The problem with Bandula Jayasekera is that he is unable to effectively counter the evidence of war crimes provided by these two journalists. So, for Bandula Jayasekera, being a guttersnipe, he is only able to respond in a crude and uncouth manner. Instead of behaving in a manner fit for a diplomat he is dragging the Sri Lankan diplomatic service and the country through the gutter, like his paymasters.

Piranha, the docs produced by Channel 4 on Sri Lanka contains systemic bias. For an example the visualization, the language, the narrative prepossess the Sri Lankan soldier as an antagonist done through editing. For an example showing a smirking face of a soldier just after showing a dead body even though they are not related. Showing fighter jets flying overhead and then showing injured people from a different context, not admitting that injured men shown could have been LTTE fighters, not indicating that the bodies being loaded into tractors were dead fighters, using a known LTTE woman as a principle narrator, the tone and the tenor etc.
That is why they are biased…..

In attempting to prevent entry into the country of Callum Macrae, Frances Nicholson or anyone else, Sri Lanka if it is speaking through the voice of Mr. Bandula Jayasekera, is demonstrating quite vividly its lack of democratic credentials. Hence it is showing itself incapable of upholding basic Commonwealth values and principles. If however Mr. Jayasekera is speaking for himself he should be held to account by his government for stepping out of line, while holding a public position. The government’s silence speaks for itself.
Mr. Jayasekera’s intemperate words are unbecoming of a diplomat and does great harm to the image of SL.
Irrespective of the merits or otherwise of holding CHOGM in SL one needs to reflect on comments in your paper of threats of violence. Even if such is unintended it sends out a chilling message of the culture of lawlessness and impunity in the land. This is ‘shooting literally and metaphorically’!
The comments by the consul beggars belief. What influence does he have on the immigration system in the land? This system, like any, must be clear, transparent, adhered to and have a chain of accountability. By making that statement he is showing yet again that rules are made ad hoc, adhered to ad hoc and that there is no accountability. This is what has been lacking for too long in the country. When politicians too make threats, it shows that those in government are able to exercise power beyond the systems and structures of democratic government..
The best way of dealing with issues, however unpalatable and / or devoid of truth, is not by enforced silence or threats of violence but by healthy debate. Unless of course there is the over- riding need for silence! Samuel Johnson said ‘every man has a right to utter what he thinks truth, and every other man has a right to knock him down for it’.
