Sri Lankan Editor Frederica Jansz Flees Sri Lanka; ‘Finally I feel safe’ Says Jansz

By Colombo Telegraph

Frederica Jansz, who was sacked from her post as Editor in Chief at The Sunday Leader in September this year is learnt to have left Sri Lanka together with her two sons having been granted refuge by a powerful nation currently pushing to hold the Sri Lankan government accountable for possible war crimes and other human right abuses including abuses of media freedoms and stifling the press.

Finally I feel safe. My kids are safe. The pressure, the persecution has been intense. It was a nightmare. I am thankful I got out alive - Jansz

Jansz was sacked in September this year when The Sunday Leader was purchased by the government who fronted a pro Rajapaksa stooge to conclude the sale in the form of Asanga Seneviratne.  The latter it is
learnt insisted Jansz not carry articles critical of the “First Family” and then orchestrated a frivolous police complaint against her, insisting she continued to publish copy that were according to Seneviratne, “malicious and slanderous” of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his coterie of family holding government office.

In the backdrop of what has been described by international media organizations as an alarming trend in stifling freedom of expression and independent reportage, Frederica has left Sri Lanka after she came
under increasing pressure and continued persecution by the Rajapaksa dominated government.

Frederica now joins dozens of other journalists who have fled Sri Lanka since 2005 when Mahinda Rajapaksa took office as President.

Following her termination from the newspaper the new management at The Sunday Leader agreed to publish an apology to the all powerful Defense Secretary and brother to the President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa for having
published an article in July this year titled, ‘Gota Goes Berserk.’ In which article Rajapaksa was placed on record having used foul language on Jansz including threatening her with possible death.

Frederica had since her termination confided to close associates that she had been followed home twice by men on motorbikes as well as received a threatening phone call.  When Colombo Telegraph contacted and spoke briefly with Jansz and asked if she had made a police complaint she replied, “What is the point anymore? In Sri Lanka the police are impotent in these cases.”

Frederica was also facing further litigation initiated by Gotabaya Rajapaksa when in July this year following the article ‘ Gota Goes Berserk’ he revived a Contempt of Court action he filed in 2009 and had laid by following her giving evidence in the White Flag case.

Frederica, according to confidantes had said she had been warned by her lawyers that there were moves to possibly impound her passport at the next court hearing scheduled for later this month.  She was also facing a
jail term if the case was decided in favour of Rajapaksa.

Frederica and her young family have since been moved to a safe location under the auspices of a foreign government.

Speaking from her new abode she told Colombo Telegraph, “Finally I feel safe.  My kids are safe. The pressure, the persecution has been intense. It was a nightmare. I am thankful I got out alive.”

Jansz took over as Editor in Chief of The Sunday Leader following the assassination of her predecessor Lasantha Wickrematunge who was murdered while driving to work on January 8, 2009.

I suppose the chief justice will have to do the same thing and seek refuge overseas given the impeachment motion where she is being clearly victimized when it is infact the corrupt clown Nivard Cabral at the Central Band and the murderous Rajpakse brothers who should be impeached.

What are the women’s rights NGOs who get big bucks from donors doing without protesting the impeachement of the first woman CJ of Lanka? Are they holidaying in Geneva?
The Rajapkse regime likes to target women in particular because they are weaker and the regime is a bully, run by the thuggish brothers and their crooked cronies.
The big buck INGO women of the LSSP like Nimo should organize a rally with Vasu now that the LSSP has withdrawn its signature from the impeachment motion!

Better to avoid sharing any comments to this kind of bastards. That has become the nature of today lanka – even in critical issues, they get on with not that serious. Country and the nation are being abused by bloody MR and thugs, while this kind of idiots putting unpronounceable names keep adding ill kind of inputs :( good luck to srilanken folks.

Her Excile is one another point lanken journalist community to prove the situaiton currently prevailing in the country under MR. Actually that is one another evidence -to advocate it as the situation is appalling.

I very much hope she will come with MUCH more open articles to this blog and others – showing the guts further that MR, GR or any others cant stand on her way fighting as free media journalist.

There are some here – OF LEEla´S ILK that raise the question what kind of threats she would have if continued to be in SL. I really dont know what those dimwits think when adding such comments. GR himself gave a hint that 90% of the people will attack her-
This leela or leelananda seem to have no brains though said to have collected years of exp having lived in Uk.

If Frederica has “escaped” (a term the Tamil diaspora uses correctly) it is a further stain for Mother Lanka in an ugly tradition that has been the unfortunate lot of many of our leading journos. Soon it might be the Diaspora of fleeing Lankan Journalists. Tku Chintanaya.

Great opportunity to start life in a powerful country for her self, the two boys, [Edited out]

Otherwise children would have had no future..in Sri Lanka when they are considered adults.

On the same token, Tamils also should be given political asylum in these Western countries and Australia.

They are in greater danger than Frederica Jansz.

Well, finally she had come to understand what persecution is, if what she exaggerates is true, because when during the war, media was threatened and attacked, journalists were threatened, attacked, abducted and even made to disappear, she was not seen in any of the protests that were organized by media organizations and other civic organizations. That was why Gota agreed to leave aside his Contempt case. It’s not just the White Flag case. She was in their circles any way. Hence her ability to put through the deal with Asanga S as she admits bringing him, over one year ago.
What happened to her, is what happened to the other “Lady” now facing an impeachment. With Rajapaksas, one must know how much they could share from the collective loot.
Good luck FJ, in your host country. You may have the luck of bumping into Sonali too.

First it was oppressed Tamils who were seeking protection from the international community. Now GOSL using the same fangs upon their own Sinhala people. Very soon there will be another blood bath in Sri Lanka and MR is instigating it. International community should intervene to protect people in Sri Lanka before MR go crazy.

    Dear Frederica jansz: Peace
I congratulate you for all your work so far done in Sri Lanka as a true fearless journalist. My question is why is it that our country can’t be a democratic country? Always when someone says the truth in his or her own way that person is attacked or kidnapped or even killed. When will be that day when we all hold hands as brothers and sisters and work for the good of our nation and good of each other? Will it be just a dream always?

I believe Frederica should come out with the full storey of the ‘White Flag’ as it will help to tie the lose ends. CBK also used to complain that she was abused in ‘Thiththa Kunuharapha’ when she sat in the UNP Cabinet focussing the camera in her hand bag with the transmitter to reveal what was discussed at Cabinet Meetings. This habit of using filthy language seem to be a favourite of this breed. It is something that RW is far from using same or being accused.

On 8 October 2012, Groundviews issued a statement noting that the site faced unprecedented technical issues and strongly encouraged readers to, in order to address the problem, get in touch with InfoShare, who at the time, hosted the site and several others including Vikalpa (which at the time also faced severe disruption on similar lines to Groundviews) and the main website of the Centre for Policy Alternatives.

For a number of years, the hosting of all these sites was done pro bono by InfoShare.

What Groundviews noted in our statement of 8 October 2012 was not in any way meant to defame or damage the integrity of InfoShare or was in pursuit of any male fide agenda on our part directed against InfoShare.

We apologise for any perception as such that could have been created by the statement of 8 October 2012, and for any hurt that may have been inadvertently caused to InfoShare’s integrity and reputation and members of its staff.

Malli, for your information, there is no need to be abroad to have a ROSY LIFE. And definitely not by supporting a regime.About your opinion about being qualifeid,I have been to to mkost of these western countries and seen to my own eiys how these whites treat highly qualified migrants. And also seen how one whole hotel was tranformeed in to an asylum camp in a north German city called Göttingen close to the ex East Germany where all the inmates were Tamils in the hundreds with there whole families living out of the so called DOLE handed out by the German government. In short there is no need to go abroad SPECIALLY IN VILLYFYING AND DISGRACING OUR MOTHERLAND FOR PERSONAL BENEFITS:If you have the WILL and the QUALIFICATIONS you can have that rosy life in Sri Lanka it self.

Fredrick we salute your courage. We salute these super powers that are more humane than most other countries, that put our country in to difficulty by giving money at high interest rates. And the card board unpatriotic ,neon gods who talk about patriotism may also have to one day turn to these countries may all blessings be with you and your children

Which “superpowers” are you saluting, PB? (can I call you Mr Lead?)

      And you’re saluting “Fredrick”, too?

When you’ve finished saluting Russian and German Emperors, the USA and China (do you include Russia as a “superpower”, these days?) and worrying about “cardboard, unpatriotic neon gods” maybe you’ll have time to listen to some music. I suggest Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sounds of Silence”:

“And the people bowed and prayed…to the neon god they’d made…”

Believe me, the “super powers” are not “more humane” than “most other countries”. Were you asleep during the Cold War?

Ever since the very start off of ‘The Sunday Leader’ it displayed the traits of a gossip paper. The then owner/editor, LasanthaW bypassed all norms of accepted journalism and used all sorts of wily tactics to make money and popularize his paper. In his so-called investigative journalism, he composed scandalous stories on private lives of chosen individuals in high positions of both the SLFP and the UNP. It was obvious that LasanthaW opened many a can of worms of those he didn’t like. AnuraB and Dr.JJ are just two to name few such people who he attacked through his newspaper writing.

Indeed, Lasantha danced where angels dare tread. And the readers loved it and looked forward for the next story in the next edition. Lasantha made his money and his English speaking followers got their thrills. But without him knowing, Lasantha had made more enemies than any other journalist in the country. So, who murdered Lasantha? It could be like in that Agatha Christy’s ‘Orient Express’!

It’s no secret that the Sunday Leader has been losing money for some time in recent times. As editor, Frederica should have taken her share of responsibility and looked back her short comings and help owner forge a way out of it troubles. She should have known even Rupert Murdock has his limits. But silly woman knew no limit to her ego. Like Lasantha, Federica knew not what to publish and what not to publish.

LalW is lucky he found a buyer for his rag. The last thing a new owner of such a paper want is a stupid egoist editor hanged on to her job. So, he made her leave without proper compensation.

Now that she is no editor, I cannot understand who threatens her now and for what? There are so many who oppose the government with more drive and vigor like the JVP, FUTA and etc. They live alright. So, why not Frederica cannot?

Problem may be that Frederica does not have enough money to live here, and she couldn’t find a job here to continue her gutter journalism, and RanilW and Maha raja et al may not trust her and help her continue her ‘journalism’. Anyway, stupid, Frederica should have known her end is round the corner.

Like all of us, Frederica too need money to live. So she started looking for a green pasture abroad. It’s no secret that Frederica frequented every other western embassy for a visa of late but she was refused by many. And these so-called threats for her life are ploys like diaspora Tamils often played to get their visas.

It’s a laugh that some commentators here try to hide the country and the place she now lives as if Frederica is under fatwa like Salmon Rushdie.

      Herold (Leela)
“Attacked” is a rather unfortunate word.
Lasantha and the Sunday Leader were investigative journalist. They reported (having checked and cross-checked on facts)on all politicians (name one he/they didn’t?)of what ever colour, race or creed including the West, India and the Terror outfits of LTTE & JVP
Regrettably, Rajapakse Cabal keep “putting their foot in it” or in the case of Gota verbal diarrhea.

Sri Lankan Journalist are treated like Condoms;(ask Rajpal)like the 169 parliamentarians.

Lets face it Herold, you and i know we have to be thankful for MR leadership in getting rid of the LTTE menace but “how long is your string” or when is it going to “break” when you see hard working citizens been taken a right royal Raja ride.
Expressways, Hotels, Shopping complexes, Beautification of Colombo are for the Colombians and Rajapakse Gangs: Basil hands out keys to housing complexes with inadequate facilities. (I have been there and seen it!)
Remember Sri Lankans have short memories!
Locals at Horagolla are no different to the locals at Mankuliya

      • 0
        0

Short and sharp: Investigative journalism by Lasantha had been limited to selected people with concealed motives. He never ever touched the likes of his friend RaviK allegedly involved in many a misdeed.

I’ll write my views on media freedom another time.

Next, it’s nothing but sheer insincerity for you to say; “Expressways, Hotels, Shopping complexes, Beautification of Colombo are for the Colombians and Rajapakse Gangs”. You should know that all these are a must for a country and beneficial for everyone. Colombians you talk of are a minority; most people one bumps into there, are by far visitors to Colombo.

We who live in villages know infrastructure development and assistance provided to uplift standard of living of village based folks by the government since 2005 is beyond comparison. Those who live afar, pseudo liberals and traditional greens are blind for all good thing MR has been doing to this country. Then again, what can we expect from those who tried to scuttle his war to thrash LTTE terrorists.

Before MR presidency, the likes of Bishop Rayappu Joesph had not allowed coal power stations to be built on various pretexts. So, we had persistent power cuts before 2005. MR not only decimated LTTE, he beat most Joseph like scoundrels and built power stations at Norochchola and Kothmale and etc. Thanks for MR’s hardnosed decisions, today; Sri Lanka is the only country that offer electricity without programmed power cuts in Southeast Asia. Does it not give some indication of MR’s foresight for the country?

Still, I agree that MR has many a short coming. But wrongs by RanilW not just to the country but to his party are unimaginably large. Any man with self respect would have resigned from the leadership of UNP when started to lose election after election. But he hangs on by hook or by crook.

We may have different views on MR and his short comings. But we mustn’t forget that he is the elected Presiden of Sri Lanka. The JVP and the UNP that did their best to snatch power after Presidential election and elevate Fonseka by gilmart like claims and by inciting public unrest do not want to touch him even with a barge pole now with in just two years. I can only imagine the plight of this country and its people if only these guys were in power. NGOs and their pay masters are behind these sting operations.

So, no patriot has the right to join separatist LTTE rump and hypocrites of IC in their plots to turn this peaceful country a Libya. Why do we need know murderous to interfere in our internal affairs when MR gives us a chance to show our displeasure or indeed oust him at elections even before due dates?

      @Democracy Now
Actually, Sri Lanka has become the Sick man of Asia and the asshole of the subcontinent since the Humbug from Hum-Bug-Thotta and his extended family hijacked the country through bribes to the LTTE in 2005 and a computer jilmart in 2010. One good thing about the internet is that Fredrica and Tissaranee can still continue to write, even from thousands of miles away, and as long as there are websites like CT there voices will never be silenced.
