Sri Lankan Editor Frederica Jansz Flees Sri Lanka; ‘Finally I feel safe’ Says Jansz

By Colombo Telegraph

Frederica Jansz, who was sacked from her post as Editor in Chief at The Sunday Leader in September this year is learnt to have left Sri Lanka together with her two sons having been granted refuge by a powerful nation currently pushing to hold the Sri Lankan government accountable for possible war crimes and other human right abuses including abuses of media freedoms and stifling the press.

Finally I feel safe. My kids are safe. The pressure, the persecution has been intense. It was a nightmare. I am thankful I got out alive - Jansz

Jansz was sacked in September this year when The Sunday Leader was purchased by the government who fronted a pro Rajapaksa stooge to conclude the sale in the form of Asanga Seneviratne.  The latter it is
learnt insisted Jansz not carry articles critical of the “First Family” and then orchestrated a frivolous police complaint against her, insisting she continued to publish copy that were according to Seneviratne, “malicious and slanderous” of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his coterie of family holding government office.

In the backdrop of what has been described by international media organizations as an alarming trend in stifling freedom of expression and independent reportage, Frederica has left Sri Lanka after she came
under increasing pressure and continued persecution by the Rajapaksa dominated government.

Frederica now joins dozens of other journalists who have fled Sri Lanka since 2005 when Mahinda Rajapaksa took office as President.

Following her termination from the newspaper the new management at The Sunday Leader agreed to publish an apology to the all powerful Defense Secretary and brother to the President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa for having
published an article in July this year titled, ‘Gota Goes Berserk.’ In which article Rajapaksa was placed on record having used foul language on Jansz including threatening her with possible death.

Frederica had since her termination confided to close associates that she had been followed home twice by men on motorbikes as well as received a threatening phone call.  When Colombo Telegraph contacted and spoke briefly with Jansz and asked if she had made a police complaint she replied, “What is the point anymore? In Sri Lanka the police are impotent in these cases.”

Frederica was also facing further litigation initiated by Gotabaya Rajapaksa when in July this year following the article ‘ Gota Goes Berserk’ he revived a Contempt of Court action he filed in 2009 and had laid by following her giving evidence in the White Flag case.

Frederica, according to confidantes had said she had been warned by her lawyers that there were moves to possibly impound her passport at the next court hearing scheduled for later this month.  She was also facing a
jail term if the case was decided in favour of Rajapaksa.

Frederica and her young family have since been moved to a safe location under the auspices of a foreign government.

Speaking from her new abode she told Colombo Telegraph, “Finally I feel safe.  My kids are safe. The pressure, the persecution has been intense. It was a nightmare. I am thankful I got out alive.”

Jansz took over as Editor in Chief of The Sunday Leader following the assassination of her predecessor Lasantha Wickrematunge who was murdered while driving to work on January 8, 2009.

Dear Fredrica, First thing you should do now is appologise to Gen. Fonseka for all what you did to him on instructions given by Rajapakshas.
Secondly tell the truth about the infamous White Flag incident to the world. All the lies you uttered in courts as instructed by Rajapakshas, that led Gen Fonseka to go to Jail. Where are the security given to you during the White Flag case by Gota. Thirdly you have appologise to the entire nation for what you did to Gen Fonseka.
You have to do these from what ever the country you are now. The entire nation is cursing you for what you did to Gen. Fonseka.

On behalf of the entire nation I hope you will receive this message.

    My gosh, Leela, Leelananda etc:

    Quoting from yours:

“Now that she is no editor, I cannot understand who threatens her now and for what? There are so many who oppose the government with more drive and vigor like the JVP, FUTA and etc. They live alright. So, why not Frederica cannot?”

Please open your eyes lEEELOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, the name of the nation… – have they considered what you have done at the time they abducted your and let missing ?

Why are u so blindly supporting butchers ? What made you feel not saying a word about the murderers, killers, rapists and all kind of abusers in the ruling bunch ?

I understand some people who may have not adequate information are compelled to believe what the local media telecast or broadcast, but people of your ilk to behave blindly as they do – is far from understanding.

Can you accept the open lies that Samarasinghe has shared about that LLRC ´s tamil and sinhala versions have already been among with many those who want to read it ? what a lie ? as some journalists point out…
why these buggers think that they can continue with their lies further ?

PHEW ! I REALLY GOT PALPITATIONS READING ALL THOSE COMMENTS. VITRIOLIC ,PERSONAL, AND SOME ABSOLUTELY IRRELEVANT . FJ HAS GONE, AND THATS THAT. WHILE SHE WAS HERE SHE DID WHAT SHE DID AS AN EDITOR, OF A NEWSPAPER THAT EXPOSED INJUSTICE AND MORE BY THE POWERS THAT BE. THE PAPER IS NOW WITH THE “OPPOSITION” AND THEY WILL PUBLISH THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN. IT IS UPTO THE READING PUBLIC TO DECIPHER WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE ECHELONS OF POWER. NEEDLESS TO SAY WE AS A COUNTRY ARE “KAPUT’. BUT LIKE I SAID EARLIER “DIDN’T WE PUT THESE GUYS INTO POWER” ? SO WE BLOODY WELL DESERVE WHAT WE GET AND THERE IS NO POINT IN SCREAMING NOW. FJ HAS GONE TO SAFER DOMAINS, GOOD LUCK TO HER. OTHERS WILL FOLLOW IF THEY ARE AS LUCKY, AND THEN LIKE THAT SONG… “THERE WILL BE NO GREEN BOTTLES STANDING ON THE WALL” EXCEPT FOR THE “PATRIOTS”

Leela is right. Lasantha began as a good, social minded journalist and many readers flocked in. The Leader became popular. The problem was the
[Edited out] He mislead Lasantha to convert the paper into the money making[Edited out] journalism during Ranil’s UNP Govt. Even Ministers were afraid of him at that time and opened the Leader in the morning with fear. Business persons like Harry and Odelle had [Edited out]to be freed from damaging exposure. With the Govt change, Lasantha lashed out at the Rajapakses every week. Of course, Lasantha made him made by carrying out the article on Fonseka’s wife using the brand new Rs.65 million Mercedes. The same guys in the unit-eka did Tamil MP Raviraj in.

[Edited out] No wonder Lal did a dirty deal with Asanga (he is said to have made Rs.100 million here)

This sob story of going to Lasantha’w wife is a big lie. Lasantha had already left the 1st wife and children in the lurch going after Sonali.

    Dear Fredericka,
The positive responses here ~( forget the trashy comments by a few misguided crackpots ) attest to your class, dignity and intellect and the country that has accepted you will be the richer for it where the country of your birth that you love so much will surely regret the way you were treated by some in high office for your honesty and standing up for principles. They should hang their heads in shame !!
May God Guide you and your children to greater heights and keep you safe and Blessed.

Good Luck Frederica. You have carved a niche for yourself as a stalwart of free democratic expression. Your name has been written in gold back here in the country which so sadly banished you through personal threats and intimidation.I am sure you will continue to shed light on the unspeakable crimes that are a now a way of life and a new culture endorsed by the corrupt ruling elite. May God protect you and your kids and give you the courage to scribble along. Truth will finally prevail and there is no better adherent to this philosophy than your courageous self. Great lady. We salute you.

    kabalen lipata!
Sri Lanka may sound bad for gossipmonger giornos, but yet did allow you to spit all your poison against the most venerated man of the country, and you were never harmed (though you took your paper straight to bankrupcy) by anyone in this Buddhist majority country where even ex-armed combattants are being trained / freed to leave a normal life.

But now you are in a different country. So think twice before writing against them or you might end up like Julian Assange.

    Hi Fredric’s,
I think it is good move You leaving this country. We do not need traitors who dancing for western beat. If you really wants to talk about human right issues please consider Iraq or Afganistan. Sri Lankan president and his government is 1000 times better than western countries I know where i live. If you publish these things in western country you will need to find tiny island to live. That is what happened to Julian Assanage and his wikileak. So, please do not talk nonsense about western media freedom after doing baseless defamation against your born countrymen before imperialist enemies. It will prove us you a traitor and Shame for your mother

Any person with a F-in brain cell would know that this person is a gross abuser of the press and journalism.. if people read her last gutter article on the Great Mervin and Malaka silva.. How she even more than the police investigated the innocences of the thug malaka and made him seem as a innocent child becoming the victim of former army major. and how she left out how the serice gun of this major landed on the laps of poor malaka who was so afraid of his life.. pls justice freddy. you cant pick and choose.

Hay you dumb a… Don’t you know the time FJ wrote the last article, SL was already under MR stooge Asanga. How Asanga acquired SL is questionable, and he controlled and edited her articles. Remember he told the staff not to write anything against MR family, and that’s the reason for her to resign from SL. Now she has all the freedom to be a free journalist and not the MR bribery cars and lap top computer lap dogs.

    Hey FJ,

For heaven’s sake would you at least now stop bugging Sri Lanka and its folks and embrace the west’s all perfect leaders and systems? Today is a good day to start with bacon and eggs.

Let Sri Lanka’s elected leaders run their term. If the people so wish they will do the change. Until then, do not insult the elected leaders… try it if you can in the Yankeeland… you will do it only once!

Stay out of Sri Lanka, you traitor!!!

Rajapaksa brothers need intellectuals to guide them to rule the country for the people of Sri Lanka. Currently they are ruling for themselves, therefore their days are numbered. I am a Sri Lankan. I have an Australian business degree, and red more than 300 books about history and politics, plus I have been a part time political writer for more than ten years. I was in Sri Lanka in April 2012 and travelled to the most parts of Sri Lanka and talked to thousands of Sri lankans. After the trip I came to the conclusion that the leaders are blinded by the power and listen to nobody. This kind of attitude is not new, it has been going on for generations. This is why they are fighting since 1948. The problem is, whoever gets the power they go mad, it applies to the LTTE, Rajapaksa regime and to the other previous polical leaders.

Good article absolutely right. You only have to look at Singapore in comparison to Sri Lanka to see the huge difference good governence can make as opposed to bad. I disagree only on one point you make. I believe that Sri Lanka will be bedeviled by the Rajapaske mafia for decades to come as the people appear either unable or unwilling to challenge their growing dictatorship. Sri Lanka is fast becoming another Burma….
