The Parasites

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“The welfare of the people in particular has always been the alibi of tyrants…” Camus (Resistance, Rebellion and Death)

The Rajapaksas are imposing the superstructure of a prosperous, developed nation on the base of an underdeveloped, cash-strapped economy.

The Rajapaksas are antagonising every single ethnic and religious minority inSri Lanka, simultaneously.

The Rajapaksas are loosing friends and isolating the country internationally.

Any one of these strategic mistakes would suffice to undermine Lankan stability and security. The harm the confluence of all three can do toSri Lankaand all her people would be unfathomably immense and unimaginable various.

Previous governments were not immune to these mistakes, but none committed all three, all at once. Their simultaneous occurrence is a function of familial rule, of the measures implemented by the Siblings to promote dynastic needs and satiate megalomaniac desires.

The Rajapaksas are parasitic rulers; they can grow and thrive only by sucking the nation dry, of its resources, potential and friends.

In his Mattala Address, President Rajapaksa tried to justify his regime’s proclivity to borrow. The problem is not debt per say, but how the borrowings are used. Under Rajapaksa Rule money is borrowed to maintain a gargantuan military in peace time, to create infrastructural monstrosities unnecessary/damaging from a national/popular perspective, to service existing debt. There is very little income or employment generation and negligible forward or backward linkages in these unproductive uses; they just burden the country with a growing herd of white-mammoths.

To sustain the unsustainable, the Rajapaksas are implementing a policy of extortionist-taxation; people are milked dry via indirect taxes. Refuelling at the Mattala Rajapaksa Airport will be done at cut-rates while fuel prices are hiked-up nationally. The proposed electricity hike will reportedly impose a 53% increase on the lowest users (up to 30 units)[i] and a relatively low 22% increase on the highest users (400 units and above). This is just one more indication of how Rajapaksa economics imposes a disproportionately high burden on those at the middle/bottom of the economic totem-pole. For all the rhetoric, the Rajapaksa strategy is structurally biased towards the rich and prejudiced towards the poor and the middle classes. (The conspicuous consumption by a segment of the middle class is enabled not by an increase in household-income but by an increase in household-debt. This is another bubble which cannot last).

The anti-minority politics is partly aimed at creating a ‘feel good factor’ amongst the poor/middle class Sinhalese overburdened by the skewed Rajapaksa economics.

In the movie ‘Mississippi Burning’, the Gene Hackman character reminiscences about his racist father who killed the mule belonging to an up-and-coming black farmer and justified his crime by arguing ‘If I am not better than them (blacks) what good am I?’ The poor whites of the Jim-Crow South felt less discontented about their poverty because they were politically superior to even the most accomplished black. The Rajapaksas offer their Sinhala base an identical quid-pro-quo: the pride of belonging to the superior ethno-religious community as compensation for exacerbating economic pains. Once Tamils, Muslims and Sinhala-Christians are rendered lesser citizens, even the poorest Sinhala-Buddhist can forget his/her economic sorrows by wallowing in a sense of political superiority.

Such delusions can dull the hunger pangs, for a while.

Unjust Equilibrium

President Rajapaksa recently warned about attempts to scuttle peace in Sri Lanka. Indeed; and if he wants to see the faces of the culprits, he should look at his brothers and look in a mirror.

Last week, the President declared open a memorial of the Arantalawa massacre. The memorial included the statues of the murdered monks in their death-agonies. An Arantalawa-memorial could have been constructed without including those grotesque and hate-inducing statues. Clearly the purpose is to keep Tamil-phobia alive in Sinhala minds.

If there are no enemies, would the Sinhalese need the Rajapaksas?

Post-victory, the Siblings could have made an effort to win over Tamils. This could have taken the form of political concessions and/or a Marshall Plan type development-drive prioritising the housing, health, education, employment and poverty alleviation needs of the Tamils. Any act of sympathy and understanding in their hour of politico-psychological nadir would have gone a considerable way in healing the wounds of war and rendering the notion of a common Lankan future acceptable to most Tamils.

But intoxicated by Sinhala supremacism, cocooned in a Chinese embrace and confident of its capacity to deceive Indiaand the West ad infinitum, the Rajapaksas rejected the moderate path. Having won the war on a Sinhala-supremacist platform they saw little reason to depart from it in their moment of greatest triumph.

Cementing familial rule and building a dynasty were/are the Rajapaksa priorities. Devolution has no place on that agenda; nor do the minorities, except as bogies/enemies.

A recent speech by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, at a ‘literary’ event, reveals the mindset which made the Siblings reject the possible path towards a consensual peace. According to this Rajapaksa-worldview, the war stemmed solely from Tiger terrorism, aided and abetted by Tamil nationalism, Indian interventionism and Western imperialism. Successive Lankan administrations did not make any errors (except that of being too-soft on Tamils); the Tamils have no specific grievances and thus require no ameliorative measures. Consequently devolution is an undesirable (perhaps even dangerous) irrelevance.

Mr. Rajapaksa depicts life in the ‘welfare villages’ in rainbow-hues; according to his version, these barbed-wire enclosures were oasis of plenty with free rations, cooperatives, banks, post offices, communication centres, schools and vocational training centres; There was capacity building, empowerment and career counselling for adults and ‘Happiness Centres’ for children, facilities for “arts, music, drama, yoga and sports… churches, kovils and mosques….. “.

The spirit of Theresienstadt is alive in Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, even if the name is unknown to him.

Today Sri Lankans can’t visit Tamil Nadu, not even to play cricket. A less coercive and more inclusive peace-and-nation-building strategy could have isolated the diehard Tiger supporters. If, for instance, the Northern provincial council had been up and running, subsequent to a free and fair election, the extremists in Tamil Nadu could have been weakened and isolated.

But it was not to be. Nor will it be, so long as the Rajapaksas rule.

Devolution is as antithetical to the Rajapaksa project as democracy or separation of powers. Devolution is as impossible under Rajapaksa rule as judicial independence or free and fair elections. The Siblings do not want to cede power to anyone or share power with anyone.

The notion of the enemy within, of the minorities as perennial Trojan Horses working to further Indian/Tamil, Western/Christian or Arabic/Muslim, is aimed at justifying Rajapaksa politics and explaining Rajapaksa economics. It is the cord which is expected to bind Sinhala-Buddhists to the Rajapaksas for evermore, despite economic woes and international isolation.

The Rajapaksa-cohorts of the BBS are now gunning for Muslim and Christian extremists.

Peace cannot survive in an atmosphere of fear and hate. Progress requires tolerance. Intolerant lands often deprive themselves of some of their most precious resources, when they alienate and exclude the ethno-religious other.

The Siblings are parasites, feeding onSri Lanka, to the common detriment of all Lankans.

Sri Lanka survived 30 years of Vellupillai Pirapaharan. She may not survive 30 years of Rajapaksa rule.

DIVIDE, DISTRACT, and RULE is the name of the Rajapakse game. Distracting the people from the economic crisis and debt by attacking hapless minorities is the strategy

The regime’s official sponsorship of the anti-minority hate campaign run by the Balu Sena is the fulcrum of this governance policy. The sooner all Sri Lankans realize this and start the process of regime change the better for all!

Ranil Wickramasinghe, Mahinda Rajapassa’s little brother and the UNP dictator is as culpable for the crisis as the parasitic Rajapassa brothers, sons and relatives.

        You are so right Thisaranee!
I visited the new Mattala airport the other day and there was NOT A SINGLE plane visible there – only some school children brought to gape at the new building – another debt ridden white elephant in the Hambantota wasteland of roads and highways to no where… uneducated Rajapassa brother’s megalomania – the “development joke”
The whole country is paying for the wasted funds spent on the port and airport in the form of accumulated debt and devaluation of the rupee. Thus today only foreigners can afford to buy property in Lanka because the rupee has no value and those earning in Lankan rupees cannot afford to by property. What a joke is the petrol pump man Basil’s tourism-centered “economic development” a la Mahinda Chintanaya – a pile of garbage!

Whom is this Donkey of a President trying to bluff, opening a replica of the Aranthalawa Bus tragedy? Is MR not harbouring and caring for the main Architect responsible for the massacre, Karuna Amman as a Minister in his Cabinet and as the deputy leader of the SLFP? Did not Gota help him with a false Passport in the name of kokila Gunawardene to smuggle him to UK? What would have been the plight of an ordinary citizen if someone had forged a Passport like this? Has there been an Inquiry at least about the incident? NO. These are the buggers who try to wax eloquent, delivering speeches written by others and buggers like the present CJ serve as servile characters. Where is Justice? Where is Law and Order?

KP provided the locations of 21 ships owned by LTTE – photo of one was in the media, others simply vanished.
The millions in LTTE bank accounts abroad too are now not mentioned.
He was interrogated by Gota who must have got all information.
Now KP is supposed to run some commercial venture – no details available.

Tisaranee, I coined the expression “THE P3 PRINCIPLE” to describe the premise under which the siblings run the regime, namely POWER, PROFIT and PERPETUITY.

However, for survival the regime needs the 4th P, i.e. Protection.

This is is amply provided by absolutely corrupting the critical players in parliament, armed forces, and the financial, civil & judicial administrations.

These corrupted players scavenge unashamedly from the national trough, and in return provide protection to the regime.

I agree with you that the misery of the past 30-year ethnic terrorist threat, would be nothing compared to the financial terrorist attacks we are enduring from the regime, which promises to escalate and devastate our poor country before the next 30 years!

With the official Opposition duly neutered, we can only pray for a Miracle to save us and the coming generations from the impending calamity.

Excellent as always Thisaranee! Manym Many thanks! Please keep up the good work and take care of yourself since Gota the goon must be having wet dreams about sending a white van for you..
Did you hear that the Rajapassa regime that has destroyed Buddhism in Lanka by distorting “What the Buddha Taught” to justify its violence, militarization, and war crimes, has now initiated a “dialogue with stakeholders to formulate and introduce new legislation to deal with distortions of religions.”
The very same uneducated and uncultured Rajapakse regime that has SYSTEMATICALLY falsified, distorted and brought infamy on a peaceful religion by creating and supporting the Balu Sena and their distortions of Buddhism are now going to give us the correct doctrinal interpretation. What a bunch of uneducated morons these vile Rajapakse brothers are!
Thus powers that be have called the usual suspects, the BALU SENA of all people, to help them formulate the modalities for this process!
What an absolute circus! Meanwhile the dead leftist Vasudeva Nanayakka who is supposed to me Minister of National Integration is snoozing on the job having mooted a few bi-linugal classes.

A fine analysis! My congratulations, Tisaranee. Why don’t you write an article on Ranil’s contribution towards strengthening the MR dictatorial regime? Ranil is the biggest impediment to the formation of a vibrant opposition capable of challenging the regime. Ranil is sure to lose his parliamentary seat at the next general elections. But should the people wait until then to throw the Jonah overboard?

Give Sambandan and Sumanathiran the North and every thing will be hunky dory, according to Miss T.

Even Naduans won’t go feral and they will stop attacking innocent Pilgrims and Monks.

Killing innocent Monks in Arantalawa by the Diaspora funded Terrorists is OK, but building a monument to depict the agony is bad.

If Rajapaksas are so bad how can they last even one third of the 30 years?.

Is Miss T confused here ?.

Give the whole country to Smapanthan and Sumanthiran for one year and see the difference. 65 years of rule by you know who has brought this country to where it is today. This is exactly VP wanted to do. He is getting it done by the people he planted in the way he wanted so that the country will never get back on its feet again. a Great Master.

The man behind the Aranthalawa massacre and the bombing of Dalada Maligawa is none other than the former LTTE Colonel Karuna Amman. Today he is sitting on Rajapakshe’s lap and enjoying all the luxury (including sinhalese women). He is not only a Minister but is given one of the top positions in the party as Vice President of the SLFP.

The Rajapakshes know very well that it is very easy to fool the Singala Masses. The man who is behind this massacre is given a royal treatment and at the same time builds some Memorial museum to fool the Sinhalese.

They say, you can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all of the time. But in Sri Lanka, you can fool the majority Sinhalese all the time and whoever knows this secret can rule them and fool them forever and also loot their wealth/resources left, right and center.

I think Rajapakse wants to emulate N.Koreas Kim-il-Jung’s lifestyle and his governance, and eventually pass on the reigns to his son. I have seen documentaries of N.Korea secretly filmed and was amazed at how the poor hungry masses were being brainwashed using media, day-in and day-out to believe that their leader was their protector, caretaker and provider. They are actually dying of hunger, but keep blindly praising their President They actually believe in everything fed to them, and start shedding tears of joy just to see him on TV. It has a very powerful effect, and you can actually sense that their mindset is they live and die for their leader. They know nothing else outside. MR hopes our Sinhalese rural masses to be similar in most respects, and with the added dimension of religion, he wants them to believe that he is their protector, saviour and guardian of Sinhala race.

The Arantalawa victims need a monument that evokes sublime reactions, not shock and anger.
The old bus monument is grotesque and does not display the art intertwined with the Sinhala culture that Dr. Ananda Coomraswamy took great pains to record for the future.

The qualitative aspect of this government is illustrated in the conceptualisation of this government. The government is gross and the monuments it builds are also gross. This monument as built, is an insult to a cultured people.

A monument to remember the slaughter of young priests at Arantalawa. Not a monument but a gruesome artwork aimed at reviving hate and emotions.

A monument at Nandikal the scene of the massacre of thousands of Tamils. A hotel in the middle of a killing field to relax and enjoy the sights. As stated by MR, those who are scared of the devil would not build houses in a cemetery.

The above contrasting treatment of people of the same country?

Some commentators seem to be averse to TG’s articles which eternally attack the Rajapakses. If you read between the lines you will see that what comes under attack are not the Rajapakses but their arrogant and shortsighted policies.Coming out of the Medmulana jungle ,they suffer from an acute inferior complex. They want to show the world and the local population that SL is on par with developed world with it’s super highways ,harbours, airpots, 3 or 4 cricked stadiums,Mega Theatrs,Fly owers and the Nelum Tower supposed to be the tallest in the region. To show off the country’s image they beg and borrow at very high interest rates with mega commissions lining their pockets. China is ever willing to lend.Payment of interest annually take 90% of our earnings and we are sqeezed dry of our meagre earnings.Unable to pay oue telephone bills, electricity bills and fuel bills etc we are going back to 1940s. So please understand the precarious situation we are in without damning the messenger.

Tisaranee from thjose days was a UNP stoogw. Writing against the SLFP. She should know that it was the Rajapakse Brothers who brought peace to our country. We salute them. I was a critic of Gotabaya being a brother of Mahinda but I changed my mind in when the Defense Sec after taking office told the Derana interviewer lady when asked `DO YOU THINK YOU CAN FINISH THIS LTTE TERRORISM` He replied that `IF I COULD NOT FINISH THIS MENACE I WILL NOT HAVE TAKEN OVER THE POST OF DEFENSE SECRETARY POST` Before 2009 our family never went together out. She is writing all thee nonsense like a woman from Tamil Nadu that Prabakaran is innocent and the forces are murderers. She will be safe here not in Tamil Nadu. Now i am against giving any parity or giving more powers to North & East. Let the Parliament of Sri Lanka decide what best should be given in the context of India trying to bulldoze their way in order to ave the Indian Govt. It is a shame for India to safeguard Tamil Nadu politicians who now openly call for EELAM. One of the TN leaders had said they have 900,000 EELAM supporters in Tamil Nadu. India beware of these rascals.

yes, he won the war, but how much longer are you going to look on as he rapes and loots the country? you and all your ilk seem to be in some naive, 5-year old’s delusion of a world where a man who once did something good/great always remain so: history has taught us there is no such things. The one eyed world view of Tisaranee is symptomatic of his/her ilk locally and internationally.

If for a moment we accept that the reason for all domestic and regional ills are due to Rajapakse rule as Tisaranee would love to see everyone believing, who is feeding that rule? They are the very forces/groupings that Tisaranee tries very hard to conceal or paint as heavenly saints.

“If there are no enemies, would the Sinhalese need the Rajapaksas?”

    May be. May be not.

However certainly, many of those enemies have not been created by Rajapakses.

A one eyed critic could not and would not see it. Or is it an agenda driven effort of a treacherous mercenary?

I always think if those 30 religious people who were shot & hacked to death at Arantalawa were not Buddhist monks and instead they were Catholic priests what would have been the reaction of those so called intellectuals and the so called International Community would have been. Just up the ante further…..those were 30 Christian priests (Hindu priests may not have counted much either) died from a shell explosion……Ban Ki Moon, Darusman, Navi Pillai, Blake, Victoria Nuland….say something will you?

    • 0
      0

Then again there is this small problem. These murders (at Arantalawa) wouldn’t qualify as human rights violations or crimes against humanity to be investigated by Ban Ki Moon or Navi Pillai or the USA. Because they did not occur during the last stages of the conflict.

      Did you say how convenient?

      • 0
        0

          Ado Probono,

Those who aided and abetted & funded those crimes are not dead. many of them happily live in the West knowing that they have full protection and the backing from their host govts. There are others who provided the moral backing for such massacres sitting in Sri Lankan parliament with the cover of parliamentary priviledges.

“Aledgedly done”, my foot! Numbers plucked from fictions and thin air are only what you can parrot.

Also kiyapang Hela how about monuments for the people killed from 1915,1956,1958,1981,1983 and then the long war why not build monuments for them too like this bus

The problem here is that we’ve put ourselves in a position where, even if a moderate and proper government takes over in colombo tomorrow, we still wouldnt have any meaningful devolution process for the north and the east, simply because tamil nadu is now in a particularly terrifying position. Secession is always going to scare the crap out of us sinhalese, and we ourselves, by not giving the tamils a fair solution in 2009, have brought it to this point, where pretty much anyone will side with the pro-LTTE segments of TN and the diaspora, we’re now stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea.

KP – My reading is secession is now out of the equation if the Rajapakse Family and Sinhala extremism considers the following options

    (1) NP, as things stand, is given the right to elect its own representatives and runs its PC like all other in the country without
interference from armed Govt-proxies and the intimidatory tactics of the army and Police, in particular. The Governor has to be a civil man and from the majority community in the region The fate of the EP to be determined over a period of time, since there has been much distortion in State-sponsored social engineering to change the demographic map (2) Two Nations (comprising of the NEP) on a linguistic basis in one undivided country – with details to be worked out gradually via international supervision. e.g. Sudan

    Dear Tisaranee Gunasekara,

“Cementing familial rule and building a dynasty were/are the Rajapaksa priorities. Devolution has no place on that agenda; nor do the minorities, except as bogies/enemies.”

Tankk you, and may you achieve Nirvana or be in Heaven for speaking the truth so fearlessly, if they are real. That is what all the religious leaders wanted for their faithful to do.

The Rajapaksas and their goons , Budu Bla Sena, are terrorists terrorizing the people of Sri Lanka, except the select few, who feed on the masses.

Some claimed that Saddam Hussein was a Muslim, because he was born to Muslim Patents. He was a dictator, and killed more Muslims, than perhaps USA in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

Some claimed that Adolf Hitler was Christian (Catholic), because he was born to Christian patents, but he caused the deaths of tens of millions of Christians, and 6 million Jews.

Ms Gunasekera says it with courage and without fear about the misrule and destructive path of the Rajapaksa regime. The country is being led into a nightmare filled future and the people seem oblivious to it.

For whatever reasons the huge expenditure on this projects are utter wastage. Now the ball is on the side of the tax payer.they will have to pay for the others game play. This would have been a gamble for them but not for the poor public.Who ever comes to power will have to plan from now itself how this could be made a success in time to come.this would have been a gold mine for gamblers. But the patriotic who intends to make it a success will be the hero.As long as the Mattala taken into consideration it dam pity to to back fill the tanks to avoid the birds. This will be a world joke.Cutting down trees is also another foolish idea.
They can try some ultra frequency sound waves produced by small device which are inaudible to human but will be threat to the birds. These type of expelers are used in Sigapore and other countries.
Which can at the same time be powered by solar power. And only to be placed close to the grounds where birds gather. Why not try.
