The Smell Of Terror

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

On land a tiger, in the water a crocodile ~ A Bengali proverb

In Sri Lanka terror means Tamil or Muslim. When the JR Jayewardene government responded to the ethnic problem not with the promised political reforms but with repression and the PTA was born, the concept of terror (and its prevention) invoked an image. Not of the Tiger chief, for his face was yet to be seared into the collective memory of the Sinhala South, but of the Tamil. Every Tamil symbolised terror, from the politician defending the Eelam demand in parliament to the old woman sweeping the street who knew nothing of a separate state. They were the descendents of South Indian invaders of yore, political heirs of the timeless project of occupying and unmaking this land of Sinhala-Buddhism.

The PTA was thus born and lived most of its 44 year existence as an anti-Tamil law. It was first enacted as a temporary measure when the armed Eelam movement was in its infancy, hardly a movement, just a ragtag band of dreamers and malcontents. Within four years of the PTA’s birth, the fledgling insurgency had turned into a raging war, fed by innumerable political crimes and mistakes, ranging from the burning of the Jaffna library to Black July. Had those atrocities not happened, had a political solution to the ethnic problem been enacted, the Eelam War could have been prevented, with or without the PTA,

So the PTA was a colossal failure. It failed not only to nip the Tamil insurgency in the bud, or to do the same with the JVP insurgency of 1987-89. It also failed to stop the Easter Sunday massacre. The anatomy of that final failure is extensively documented through a number of investigations and inquiries. Revisiting their findings is timely since that tragedy is being used by the administration to push through the potentially more draconian ATA.

The Easter Sunday massacre was preventable. It wasn’t prevented not because the PTA had loopholes but because of “the deplorable want of oversight and inaction…in the conduct of affairs pertaining to Security, Law and Order and Intelligence.” That was the Supreme Court in its January 2023 judgement. Information about an impending attack first became available on April 4th 2019, yet the men in charge of ensuring national security and public safety did nothing. That failure happened not because the PTA didn’t confer enough powers on the security establishment but because of their “lack of strategic co-ordination, expertise and preparedness,” as the Supreme Court put it succinctly.

If any one man symbolises this failure, it is Nilantha Jayawardana, the then head of the SIS. He was the first top official to receive concrete information about an impending attack. By April 21st, he had in his possession the names of several potential attackers: Mohamed Zaharan, Mohamed Milhan, and Mohamedu Rilwan. If even one of these was arrested, the massacre might not have happened. As the Supreme Court pointed out, “All this shows that there was so much information that was available before Nilantha Jayawardena…but it cannot be said that Nilantha Jayawardena acted with alacrity and promptitude.” The court ruled that disciplinary action must be taken against him within six months, as part of a broader revamping of “security systems and intelligence structures.”

The same point was made by the parliamentary select committee in October 2019. In its final report the committee said that the SIS chief, MOD secretary, IGP, CNI, DMI “failed in their responsibilities. All were informed of the intelligence information prior to the Easter Sunday attacks but failed to take the necessary steps to mitigate or prevent it.” But doing anything about these structural or personnel problems was impossible. Within hours of the attack, the Rajapaksas had blamed the government for permitting it by weakening and demoralising the intelligence agencies. This cry was later taken up by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith who accused the government of dismantling “the intelligence agencies that were once very strong. This was done to fulfil the needs of international organisations and NGOs.”

Innocents like Hejaaz Hisbullah and Ahnaf Jazim were arrested. The man the Supreme Court singled out for negligence, Nilantha Jayawardana, was made a senior DIG on January 3rd 2023. Three and a half months later, he remains in that august position. And the security systems and intelligence structures remain as they were, moving to a beat that has very little to do with national security and public safety. The government is busy pushing the ATA. The Opposition and the Cardinal are busy chasing the elusive Mastermind. And the Rajapaksas are poised to benefit from both preoccupations.

The Mastermind Syndrome

The idea of a hidden hand, a mysterious mastermind behind the Easter Sunday massacre was birthed and popularised by the Rajapaksa camp. Two days after the Massacre, Mahinda Rajapaksa mentioned the possible presence of a foreign hand behind the attack. In the next several weeks, this amorphous foreign hand was given shape and form by his acolytes. Wimal Weerawansa said that the American Ambassador could be behind the attack, with PM Wickremesinghe’s complicity, to turn us into a Libya or Syria (Lanka c news – 3.5.2019). Udaya Gammanpila informed the parliament that the IS was an American cat’s paw. Americans had Muslims ready, complete with Sinhala names, to attack other Muslims thereby igniting another Black July. Muslim countries would protest and the West would invade in the guise of peacekeeping, he claimed (Lanka c news – 9.5.2019).

These ravings were rendered respectable when Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith joined the bandwagon. In June, at a ceremony to re-consecrate the Katuwapitiya church, he said, “The youth who carried out the bomb attacks were used by the international conspirators… I have seen a report that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Bagdhadi is in a military camp which is run by the most powerful country in the world. I won’t mention the name of this country but clearly the ISIS leader is in a military camp which is run by this powerful nation…  We question whether this nation knew about the bomb attacks.” The paper was Divina, which was less coy than the cardinal and mentioned the name of the country supposedly hosting the IS chief, the US.

The possible identity of the Mastermind changed according to the political climate. At first it was the Foreign Hand. Later parliamentarian Rishard Bathiudeen became the top contender for the role. Athuraliye Rathana thero began a ‘fast’ against him. The Catholic Church backed a no-confidence motion by the pro-Rajapaksa opposition against him. He was even arrested during the Gotabaya presidency. Today, for many, the Rajapaksas are the Mastermind. Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith even quoted from the parliamentary select committee report to this effect. (The report wondered “whether those with vested interests did not act on intelligence so as to create chaos and instil fear and uncertainty in the country in the lead up to the presidential election.” The report was available to read on Colombo Telegraph website by 23 October, 2019. At that time, the Cardinal didn’t heed the warning.)

The mindless preoccupation with a Mastermind is a convenient scapegoat for political and security establishments, as well as for the people. Politicians promise to find the Mastermind when in opposition and use the Mastermind to evade the difficult task of revamping the security establishment once in power. The security establishment depend on the Mastermind to deflect attention from their own culpability. We, the people, need not face how we failed to take a public stand against extremists in our own communities.

When the police came to the Dematagoda house of Ilham Ibrahim, the Shangri-La bomber, his pregnant wife detonated a bomb, killing herself, her three children, and unborn baby. What would make a father consent to such a horrendous plan or a mother carry it out? The question, if asked, would compel us to face the dark side of religion, how extreme belief and piety can result in inconceivable horror (this is true of ideological extremisms of the secular variety too). But if we busy ourselves with the forever search for the Mastermind, we need not face the role played by Sinhala-Buddhist supremacism and Islamism in preparing the ground for the massacre. We are not guilty for The Mastermind did it.

The Mastermind obsession also served to discredit the only serious investigation into the Massacre carried out by the CID, under DIG Ravi Seneviratne and SSP Shani Abeysekara. When President Gotabaya transferred 700 CID personnel including the members of the investigative teams, hardly anyone protested. The Rajapaksa opposition also boycotted the parliamentary select committee. Both the investigation and the select committee pinpointed how the Rajapaksas’ anti-Muslim campaign played into the hands of Mohamed Zaharan and other extremists. As the then acting head of the TID Jagath Vishantha informed the parliamentary select committee, “After the Digana incident they published a lot of posts against Sinhala-Buddhist extremism. And from our Research and Analysis units we could see that they got many comments and likes.” “Zahran started a campaign to radicalise Muslim youth and motivate them to use violence to achieve their ends post March 2018 attacks on Muslims in Digana…” the select committee concluded. “He was able to recruit many by using that incident and the Aluthgama incidents of 2014 to embrace the Islamic State of Syria and Iraq ideology.” The report also highlighted increasing levels of Wahabism and Arabisation in parts of Sri Lanka – or rather Saudi-Arabisation.

So without the Rajapaksa’s anti-Muslim campaign, without Aluthgama and Digana, the Easter Sunday Massacre could have been prevented just as the long Eelam War could have been avoided if Black July didn’t happen. The key is political, a state and a society that enable moderates of all religions while marginalising extremists of every religion. But those necessary political changes need not even be discussed so long as we can cling to the never-ending search for the Mastermind. For there will never be a Mastermind that can satisfy all the diverse elements who need him.

The problem with the ATA

Shakthika Sathkumara was an award-winning writer and a Sinhala-Buddhist father of three. Fathima Nushara Zarook was a Muslim mother of one who had worked in the Middle East as a housemaid. Mr. Sathkumara was arrested in early April and Ms. Zarook in early May 2019. Both had fallen foul of ICCPR, an international covenant created to protect fundamental rights and was being used to violate them in Sri Lanka.

ICCPR is being wielded against minorities and dissenting Sinhalese via Section 3: “No person shall propagate war or advocate national, racial or religious hatred that contributes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence.” The proposed ATA includes in its definition of terrorism, “causing destruction or damage to religious or cultural property or heritage.” This clause is ripe for abuse by Sinhala supremacists within and outside the state. For instance, a Muslim woman believed to be wearing a kaftan featuring a dhamma chakka or a Sinhala man writing a story about predation within the Sangha can be deemed guilty of damaging our heritage. Tamils protesting the implanting of a bo sapling in an area without a single Buddhist inhabitant can be accused of damaging cultural property. “Causing serious risk to health and safety of the public or a section thereof’ would be terrorism under ATA. This in a country where Muslims were accused of spreading Covid-19! If passed sans amendments, ATA could create an abusive system like pre-revolutionary Frances’s lettre de cachet. This may not happen under President Wickremesinghe. What about his successors?

The normally fractious Opposition is united against the ATA. The Rajapaksas are hedging their bets, waiting to cut the best deal either way. To get the law through the parliament, President Wickremesinghe will need the votes of all SLPPers, and not just those backing him. To get that support, he will have to concede whatever pound of flesh the Rajapaksas demand. This is likely to be ministerial posts to Namal Rajapaksa and hardcore acolytes like Johnston Fernando and Rohitha Abeygunawardana, perhaps even premiership for Mahinda Rajapaksa. If the president concedes, that would tarnish his recovering reputation beyond redemption and give a new life to the outdated myth of Ranil Rajapaksa.

The Rajapaksas retain the backing of their devotees, but most of the 6.9million have long deserted them. Angry at being ‘deceived’ by the Family, burdened by indirect taxes and high rates, they will react with unappeasable anger at any attempt to give cabinet portfolios to men they blame for their condition. This anger may well work against Mr. Wickremesinghe at any future election, especially a presidential poll.

The government’s determination to push the ATA is creating new political faultlines the economy could ill afford. Sri Lanka has avoided Lebanon’s fate and achieved a modicum of stability thanks to Mr. Wickremesinghe’s economic policies. The steady increase in foreign remittances is the latest indication of a country that is on the path to recovery. The focus should be on justice, good governance, and rule of law – specifically preventing incidents like the recent attack on a foreign-owned garment factory by supporters of a Gampaha district state minister. ATA is a diversion from that sensible path. If repressive laws and armed power suffice to maintain status quos, Bastille would still be standing.

Whether I agree or disagree of the arguments Tisaranee related to terror, master mind and Ranil Wickremasinghe’s economic success, Sri Lanka’s Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalists politics is a failure. Still the politics remain under the influence of Terrorism and destruction of the country. Terrorism is now essential mechanism for politics.

Did the Cardinal say anything about these two,? Correct me if I am wrong, but did he say anything when Dr. Shafie was arrested? Also, this Cardinal took an ungodly amount of time to visit the Evangelical Church in Batticaloa.
This Cardinal is no follower of Jesus Christ.

“This Cardinal is no follower of Jesus Christ.”

This cross dresser (you will find Kasaya under his cassock) was opposed to foreign governments and agencies interfering in Sri Lankan domestic war crime issues until Easter Sunday bombing of churches, he had made enough comments against Gays and third gender.

He also rendered his public support to Athuraliye who went on a fast on to death campaign demanding the removal of three Muslim politicians from their posts, namely Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, Eastern Province Governor MLAM Hizbullah and Western Province Governor Azath Sally.

Is he seeking eye for an eye instead of turning the other cheek?

nimal fernando must be his great fan or supporter.

Considering the following it is difficult to believe that Nilantha Jayawardene did not inform MS of the impending attack on Easter Sunday. How did MS and Nilantha Jayawardene cook up an Assassination attempt on MS’s and Gota’s life and had Nalaka Silva arrested, who was investigating Saharan just prior to Saharan being arrested and had Saharan been arrested. there plans would have gone for a six by the Easter Sunday Debacle being thwarted? Namal Kumara a mole of the Rajapaksas, another supposed to be an Intelligence sleuth is Scot free today , after his revelation of the Hoax of an Assassination Story? Further after the Easter Sunday Debacle how MS had pleaded with IGP Pujitha Jayasundara to accept blame, that MS will fix him as a Diplomat. Wheels within wheels.

You are talking through your hat. With your pseudo Punditry you fail to understand how MS who made an open statement after 2015 Elections, had he not won the Presidency he would have been sent six ft under. After making that allegation, how MS had made deals with MR once again to make him the Unconstitutional PM in the 52 day Coup what do you understand for MS to double cross Ranil Wickremasinghe? For that matter no sooner after the Bomb explosions, MS tried his best to put the total blame on Ranil Wickremasinghe. Things didnot go well when the public came to know how the Forces heads had avoided meeting with Ranil Wickremasinghe on MS’s Orders and further RW had been kept out of the Security Council Meetings. So it became difficult for MS to make further allegations against RW and was looking for the Mahamolakaraya while all the Rajapaksas were silent getting ready for Gota to contest. Had Ranil Wickremasinghe denied that would have been enough to blame him more and you stupids would have believed MS and MR. Besides in this state of affairs do you seriously believe that Justice would have been done, had these points been highlighted? Even today with all these glaring evidence, how all are silent and more so your ilk tend to believe that Ranil Wickremasinghe is the guilty party?

It’s probably because you’ve come to realise that most commenters have now started toeing the Ranil W. line, or are absent. The situation is now very serious, but the CT comments that I see no longer are bold the way that they used to be.

      Gamini,

For an unbending UNPyer like you, it is hard to believe, but all you heard in the south is a framed story. Did you believe the Suicide jacket story in Chavakachery, when Yahapalanaya Rapist police stole an ex-rebel’s first wife, and forcefully supplied him a second wife and had planted the jacket through her, when her man was coming home after on a trip to Rapist Army narcotics Badu Transport trip. What happened to Pulasthini, a fatherless-motherless Orphan? The cruelest thing is, after the Rapist Army collected all of them in a government house in Sainthamaruthu, they bombed all, accidentally that girl, Zaharan’s wife, and the child who were hiding in the bathroom escaped. What did the Tamil media report on yesterday’s, five people murder in Neduntheevu? It was a Neighbour house Rapist Navy. Now they are concocting stories on a German deportee, an Ex-Rebel. Remember Kyats girls Muder, Evil Emperor had the Family Lawyer Thavaraja P.C., dismissed, and forcefully had his UNP Sinhala Lawyers inserted into that. Rapist Sinhala Buddhist police and Sinhala Only Jury courts never come with the truth in any case!

There are many other rapes and murders of girls in the north blamed on Diaspora criminals; and tell me about the 1958 incident, the Sinhala Man’s body was cut into pieces, iced, and sent to Colombo. What about the 13 armies and library burning? Unless entire UNP politicians are given out to the Chinese free for brain delicacy, the IMF will just go ahead flooding the Sinhala Buddhist Modayas with another round of loan burden. Rapist forces kidnapped 12,000 youths from Internment camp in Mullai thieve, but no one was returned. Now they all are forcefully made missing. Rowdy King saying he returned all of them. But the Rapist army is not able to give even one name like that to courts. What is the current crime rate in Langkang? What is the murder, rape rate in North? Why Vijekala Could not join the UNP, where she and her husband were lifetime members? What was the murder rate there when ASP Sunderalingam like Tamil police officers were working?

      C. Had Saharan been arrested, (timely fashion) their plans would have gone for a ‘six’ by (of) the Easter Sunday Debacle (Mass culpable Murder of Innocent) being thwarted?
      D. Namal Kumara (NK) mole of the Rajapaksas, another supposed to be an “Intelligence sleuth” is ‘Scot free’ today, after his revelation of the Hoax of an Assassination Story?
      E. Further after the Easter Sunday Debacle how MS had pleaded with IGP Pujitha Jayasundara (PJ) to accept blame?
      F. Reassuring that MS will fix him as a Diplomat. Wheels within wheels.”
      1. Above (A), to my knowledge, NS – Former SSP’s Son, (1995) who excelled in CID Special Branch – forerunner to TID, would’ve become IGP, before Chandra Wickramaratna (CW), definitely before Nilantha Jayawardene (NJ)!!!
      2. Above (B), that investigation (Saharan) “POISONED CHALICE”!!?? Important factions were interested, in the matter – Self- Serving ends!!??
      a. NJ because of NS’s seniority in line up, his good progress/performance in TID, since his appointment and rise in position!!?

Ganmini: Where is Nalaka Silva today? What happened to Namal Kumara?

Nalaka Silva obtained an “Arrest Warrant” to arrest Zaharan. Why he didn’t do that immediately? That delay was to allow Namal Kumara to come up with the “Assassination Plot” of President (MY3) and Defense Secretary Gota. Could that too be an “Extended” plot? Nalaka Silva was “Arrested” and sent for “Jail Custody”. What happened to the “Assassination Plot” (very serious nature) inquiry against Nalaka Silva? Shouldn’t that “Inquiry” be given the “Highest Priority”?

Now Nalaka Silva is a SDIG after exnorating him of the “Assassination Plot”. Who “Exnorated” him and “Promoted” him to SDIG? If so, why Namal Kumara was not “CHARGED” for making a “FALSE” allegation of that serious nature against the Head of the TID – Nalaka Silva?

These events are not “Wheels within Weals” but, very well “Scripted” and “Choreographed” dramas of the “POWER BLOCK”- “The MAFFIA” in power.

        Simon,
“Nalaka Silva obtained an “Arrest Warrant” to arrest Saharan. Why he didn’t do that immediately?”
As I understand it, the “paperwork” takes time and dependant on 3rd parties, hence Police and related agencies – say customs/excise, get the documentation ready and ‘pounce’ on the culprit, when he is in the act of committing an act or criminal move!!!
Probably, NS was awaiting such an opportunity and my take is that NK had got wind of the Warrant issued, either thru his contacts in the police (Narcotics division, which he has been in and out so often) and hatched a plan to thwart it!!???
What better idea than put that man who is gunning for him with accusation of treason!!!
Murder of HoS and past Defence Secretary!!!??

The Rascal Evil Emperor refused to sign the Rome Accord inorder to save the Rapist Army. ICCPR regulations were agreed to ratify, but only the clauses that can be interpreted against Minorities. Resolution 1373 in UNSC is to protect civilians against terrorism. Because it is an international, minimum countries must validate its legitimacy if a country uses it against an organization. When Lanka used 1373 to label all Tamil foreign organizations as terrorist organizations, no country in the world attested that declaration, other than Sonia’s India. Now Langkang is cheating as it is correcting PTA as ATA to match international standards. These are Okay for the Sinhala Buddhists, who vote for the UNP-SLFP cartwheel government. But why is the Tamils community forced by international governments to take this suffering? Royals paid $150M of fines & fees to develop the Pahadu . The tower never came into the hands of Appe Aanduwa for administration. There is no competitive bidder to the Singapore based Chine company to run it. Nobody knows the expenses and income of this monumental waste. Tower is in on their Party symbol’s name, As Pahadu Tower. Now that Pahadu name is about to be changed.

Slap Party president, an educated lower, has quit the party. A Buddhist monk has been appointed to the party presidency.

    party presidency.

Anybody (within the readers) need a PhD grade lecture on what is the target of charging the presidency to a racist, violent groups, from a lawyer? After wasting $150 Millions to crown the party with the tower, now the party is surrendered to winter frogs who croak all night as “Putha Ngngngng Kara Ngngngng Katchani”. These are guys calling the Aanduwas to ban Tamils and Muslim parties under ICCPR, because they were advocating racism in their names. Please do not compare Mathulawawe Sobitha Thero, as outside consultants for all political parties & Organizing the Yahapalanaya, to a Buddhist monk taking over the leadership of the party which was having the most influence in recent history and had lost hope, wants to revive it using the slogan of Buddhang Saranam Katchami . This is no Gnanam, but an open bombing raid siren warning for the public. They care it or no, Sinhala Buddhist have dug and buried them in a pit nobody can dig them out. This is also a warning to Evil Emperor, if he takes the IMF Coolies to his side, controls the cabinet by appointing only UNP supporters there, and fixes the election at an auspicious time for UNP, Old Royals have their own ways to resurrect them! Don’t discard the party it captured parliament, Locals, and presidency within a three years’ time it was formed!

    Lest We Forget:
Easter attacks should never be forgotten nor the agitations against the government’s failure to bring out the truth should be stopped. Was SIS Chief Nilantha Jayawardena failed in his duties or was he a conspirator with the “maha mola karu”? What’s shocking is that he was one of those who was tipped to get a promotion recently. Only in Sri Lanka, such a thing could happen, this clearly shows the mentality of the President and the suppose to be independent police commission. Since the new President was appointed, his second Parliament is still without a full Constitutional Council which clearly shows political manipulation of the President on top of the constitution violating and standing order violating Speaker’s inability to form one. The way the Speaker behaves in the Parliament makes me recommend to him to sit at the feet of Karu Jayasuriya and learn how to conduct himself in the Parliament. This is the present state of the Parliament, or should I say illegitimate President and a Parliament formed by crooks.
The only person who honestly pushing for the Easter Sunday attacks is the Cardinal. However, once again there appear to be moves based on media information that efforts are being made by some Buddhist Monks who are rekindling ethnic conflict.

      I agree, dear Buddhist1,
      .
I have no fundamental disagreement even with Mallaiyuran, who has two of the five comments that have so far being made. For me the only problem with the Mallaiyuran comments is that they deal almost exclusively with the problems faced by speakers of Tamil.
      .
All that we want is the conducting of the Local Government Elections. After those elections are held , we must take stock of the situation.

This is because they still face most of the problems and it is their land, the Sri Lankan state is still stealing that for Chingkalla colonisation, and their temples, symbols and history are being destroyed. The reason they are the only people on the island, who also have an ancient history on the island, have a homeland and can challenge the Chingkallams, not the Indian origin estate Thamizh, the South Indian origin fake Aran Thamizh Muslim, the Malays, Burghers or Bohras or any other community. Therefore the Chingkallams want to destroy them, steal their land and erase their ancient history on the island. To create their Chingkalla Buddhist-only land. Once they are destroyed, it will be very easy to destroy the other, as these South Indian origin Muslims, who were the former partners of the Chingkallams in the Eezham Thamizh genocide, have belatedly realised, that the Chingkallams were only using them as a tool to destroy the native Eezham Thamizh with dreams of giving the Thamizh east to them on a platter, after destroying and chasing the Thamizh there and deliberately encouraging their Arabisation and to claim a fake Arab origin, that they hardly have to distance them from their actual South Indian origin Thamizh Islamic heritage.

There are definitely issues experienced by the Tamils, but what Mallaiyuran is blind to is that these bad experiences are not limited to Tamils – especially not to North and the East Tamils but to all “non-majorities”. The majority, due to the racist declarations of the Buddhist Monks calling Sri Lanka a Sinhala Buddhist Nation is the major issue. No politician, including Ranil, has the guts to call Sri Lanka a country of “Sri Lankans”. The day this happens most of the issues will be resolved. The aragalaya showed light at the end of the tunnel but it appears that the light has faded, all the leaders of the aragalaya have been purchased by the Ranil-Rajapakse gang.

        • 14
          5

However all the other non-Tamil minorities, gleefully joined the Sinhalese majority and actively and openly supported them, in their anti-Tamil genocidal dance and war crimes against the island’s Tamils. Including many of the Burghers and others, who had fled the island due to the same problem. Many even went to various foreign countries and even to the UN to lie on behalf of the Sinhalese and deny what was happening to the Tamils. They all thought once the Tamils were marginalised, they together with Sinhalese will enjoy lots of fun and benefits. Little did they know that the Sinhalese were only using them as a tool to marginalise the island’s indigenous Tamils and had no intention of sharing anything with them but will soon target them too, once the Tamils were marginalised. Now crying out.

          • 15
            5

As for your Aragalaya, it shed some light but even here the vast majority of the Sinhalese who participated in it and protested were not interested and were hostile to just Tamil rights. They only protested because they were economically affected and not for any other reason. The vast majority of them voted for these racists and for these Sinhalese Buddhist extremists and fascists, even many Sinhalese Christians as they themselves believed in this racist nonsense. The so-called prosperity and joy on the back of the marginalised Tamils and now other non-Sinhalese minorities did not arrive, but more hardship. In anger and disappointment, they protested. Even now see how the southern Sinhalese news media and people remain mum about the illegal land grabbing by the Sri Lankan state, the armed forces and many other government departments, the foremost the fake Archaeological department, with the aim to Sinhalese the Tamil speaking north and east. The deliberate destruction of ancient Tamil historical sites both Hindu and Buddhist, Tamil history and forcibly converting them to Sinhalese Buddhist sites, using fake history, as they can do so. I do not see ancient Hindu temples being reconstructed down south by the Archaeological department. Even the prehistoric live ancient Hindu site Kathikammam, the abode of Tamil god Lord Murugan has now been converted to a Buddhist site.

Until the Sinhalese and others acknowledge the grave injustice done to the island’s Tamils and their racism nothing will change. PK and Mallaiuran are correct and you are uncomfortable with the truth. The irony is the biggest anti-Tamils amongst the Sinhalese are largely of recent South Indian Tamil immigrant origin. Both low and high-born.

Countries where ethnic issues play a crucial role must have systems that work for peace and harmony in society.

Unfortunately, we do not see such systems still functioning in our hell destroyed by the Rajapaksas.
Have we any hope about they getting it closer ? not yet.

Not even social media, except for a few channels regularly talk about the long-delayed issue.
Instead they are talking about 2500 years old heritage, ravana, and buddha being born in srilanka not india etc and our ” fake Hapankam” if it is not Indians, then huge number of Sri Lankans would have gone dead again during the last 8 months as in Tsunambui but by starving.
            .
Any public statement against minorities can create new form of clashes and unhappiness for minorities. If I was born in a minority, I would not feel better. But the saddest reality is that this is not seen in our motherland, which has been embroiled in war for decades.

Every citizen of this country should be equal in every way. This should be systematically spread to every corner of the country until the Sinhalese racists finally realize that we are all the same.

Why can’t the media today still be bold about this through their media rather than airing or telecasting “Pirith chants” from dawn to dusk? Hypocrasises govern this nation and it has now been the stumbling block for the economic progress.
The Sri Lankan media mafia is a huge network that is the dreaded drug mafia: It is the cancer o fthis nation. NOthing else but media mafia should be responsible for all the mess.
              .
This should be branded on their head or branded with a hook.
The current president is not popular among the people because he is elected by the parliament for internal term. However, those who saw themselves as legitimately elected turned a blind eye to the most critical issue.

Who can do the job if not the religious forces?
Who is our powerful religious force in our motherland? They are the Sinhala Buddhists and the so-called false buddhist monks (Sinhala Buddhist monks). Not to generalize, but today most people behave like Buddhist laity. Shamelessness is their life motto. Look how the bugger MONK behaves like a mad person in a disco.

“So the PTA was a colossal failure. It failed not only to nip the Tamil insurgency in the bud, or to do the same with the JVP insurgency of 1987-89.”
It would have been not too bad if it was only its failure that was the issue.
The act was a tool of state terrorism and was first used in a big way against the Sinhalese youth. Its use against Tamils was for detaining suspected terrorists etc. But then the war overshadowed the PTA.
Actually, there was not much of an insurgency in the North when the PTA was enacted.

Of course this has nothing to do with Banda and Sirimo, everything to do with Chelva, Amir, Sambandan, Federal Party, TULF, TNA, ….. Annadurai, …..

I thought that he finally found the “doctor in the room” that he was looking for.
I am sorry that things did not turn out that way.
Somehow I seem to care for his health far more than any other here.

You have forgotten to mention Annamalai!!!
Was it by design or accident!!???
He is a significant player too!!!??

Annamalai is a recent player in this old game.
My comment was aimed at SJ who attempts to save Bandas a**e whenever he gets the opportunity and blames the Federal party and all its members.

The man in search of ‘a doctor in the room’ has a few too many FP bottoms to protect in anticipation of any likely accusation.
Be kind and try to believe him: The FP has done a splendid job from 1949 to this very day. Anyone questioning that has to be a Tamil traitor and, as a famous FP leader once declared, is among persons undeserving of natural death.

          Dear Buddhist1,
          .
          You’re welcome.
I was a bit surprised by this appreciation.
          .
I hope that you’ve said it because I’m now emphasising the need to advocate just one step at a time. Above this, you will find that I have done the same to nimal fernando’s comment.

Shame on so many for distracting instead of getting the LG Elections held. Put even campaigning for one’s favourite party aside. The people must be consulted.

When I say that the LAW must be respected, our hitherto “best commenter”, old codger, has in one place reminded me that the law requires dogs to be licensed. That trivial observation is here:

Tisaranee with cogent reasons spelt out the evils of the proposed ATA replacing the PTA. in this essay.
But she is rather soft on President Ranil.W. who has been portrayed in this essay as a decent guy. The ATA she argues will be worse in the post Wicremasinghe, period if this piece of legislation enters the statute books. I DO NOT HOLD THAT VIEW.

To crush dissent Ranil Rajapakse alliance would go to any length .After all, they need to stay in Power.
If and when this draconian piece of Law comes into force, sooner or later, the days of RW. HOLDING ON TO THE PRESIDENCY WOULD ALSO BE SHORTENED……………………….

Dear LM: You say “…… must have a system to ……that Rajapakses have destroyed.

Yes. We are doing everything possible to curb those ethenic issues and clean society. One such “Move” is the “ATA”. Ranil W, recently told at a meeting with the Tri Forces that he has instructed the Minister of Justice to frame the “TUFFEST” legislation to clean the society. He also wants to “CONFISCATE” the personal properties of all those who disrupt the services once those are declared “Essential Services”.

Aren’t you happy that we are moving in the “Right Direction”? Have hopes for the best of the future – 2048.

      Not Mr. Simon (Mr.),
(mahathmaya is Mr. – mahaththaya is the term used by subordinate men like Tilney de Silva when addressing the name “Mahinda”). If my grannies were alive today, they would have raised, the question why people are misled this much in this country ?
      .
Anyway, thanks for your sarcastic comment. I repeat, I don’t care who he is, I do not support any party in Sri Lanka. If someone succeeds in anything, then I respect him or her. That is the motto of my life.
      .
When we think of making the country free or lesser from crime, there is no doubt that rigorous laws are necessary to crack down on criminals and increase crime levels. However, this should be within srialnken standards.

Sri Lankans have laws but most of them are toothless. It was said in parliament today that the judiciary is not hard enough to punish the crime doers. How can it be, while the folks repeatedly vote for criminals and let them entering parliament to represent them ?Even the worst criminals are released on bail within 24 hours in today’s juidiciary. So, it has turned out to be a garbage dump stinking, however, not having alternatives, they should continue.

Duterte style leaders (https://gulfnews.com/world/asia/philippines/how-duterte-changed-the-philippines-in-six-years-of-his-presidency-1.1647534496252) can surely save Sri Lanka. Of its main criminals.
Not only “monkeys”, but also a large number of human criminals

        https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/monkey-business/

Today, those criminals who raise their heads like termites in this country should be cut off. Whether they are within SB or not, they should be treated not with impunity but severely punished.
        .
This does not mean that JVP barbarians should be our leaders in future.
We know how our youth were killed during the 89-92 rebellion. Then it will be like “the fox is the watchman of the chicken farm”.

Are there other crimes less than the 89 JVP brutal murders?
Are there other barbarians in this country? I am ashamed to call myself “Sinhala today” as I automatically go back to the 89 rebellion.

My friend’s family was fed his own bones and meat before the family was told what they were eating. Can you guys imagine ? These men are today wearing SINHALA BUDDHIST banner s on their foreheads.

How much did the affected families suffer? SINHALA man or the like modest JVP supporters would not care much because he might have no hearts.

Are there any mlechcha levels other than this ?We talk brutalities of HITLER, what about the brutalities in our home country, committed by JVPrs ???????
          .
However, the first step should be to isolate Rajapaksa (the god father of various mega crimes in this country) and his criminal networks.
          .
You may have heard in a hive that the “king bee” must be removed, only then will all the other bees automatically follow.
Today, even the children of this country are becoming aware of Sri Lanka’s criminal mastermind Rajapaksa.

We must enter this inforamtion to the primary school curriculum so that such crimes would never be repeated in this country.
By that way, we can educate our children well considering our past crimes.

How can our crimes spread like a cancer in this country today? The nation’s criminal cancer lies in the Rajapaksa genes.

To prevent such a society from getting worse day by day, Mahinda Rajapaksa’s tactics should closely be studied. They are mlechcha of every possible nature.

University experts and others from other institutions to you, Awake, Awake!
The awareness will certainly benefit the future generations. These are real warnings for a better future of our motherland.

Also, who are the various gods of crimes in Sri Lanka should be clearly identified.

This information should be disseminated through local broadcasts and broadcasts, which should be done similarly to “regular pirith sessions”.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7yyNwiTLdg

According to some environmental experts, Gota’s ghost is still active.

It is speculated that $250 million was transferred to an account in London and these men were closely linked to RJAPAKSHE MAFIA. Why on earth are Sri Lankans diverting from legal behavours?

. We must all join in this common effort, if it doesn’t work, nothing tangible will work for real change in this crime-dominated society.
