Thinking Of A President

By Hema Senanayake

Peace and stability must be the focus of any development agenda. As the president of the country Maithripala Sirisena should have the same focus. Other than analyzing mere economic factors any macroeconomic analyst would concern about the political stability and peace of the country. Hence, with the same focus, I prefer to investigate the impact arising from the provision of nominations to former president Rajapaksa and his clan.

If the president Mathripala Sirisena had consciously decided rather than being succumbed to pressure to give nominations to Mahinda Rajapaksa and his group, in my view it was the best decision available for him to make after the Matara rally conducted by pro-Mahinda activists. But the decision president Sirisena made after the Nugegoda rally, held by the same group, possibly could not have been the best decision the president could have made. Being an economic analyst why do I say so?

As we know it in Sri Lanka racism is a severe threat to peace. All kind of racism is bad for the country. TNA did not give nominations to former LTTE members. Perhaps, TNA wants to deter racism in the North and East. In the South, prior to the nominations, pro-Mahinda activism wanted to be based its activities on Sinhala-Buddhist racism.

MaithripalaFor an example, when Gotabaya Rajapaksa was summoned by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, pro-Mahinda activists were there in front of the Bribery Commission to protest against summoning Gotabaya. The activists who went there held a lion only flag instead of the real national flag. It was not an ad-hoc event; instead it symbolizes the true nature of protesters or the sentiment the protesters wanted to exploit. That sentiment was racism nothing else.

Then, the former president Mahinda himself began to use racist rhetoric during his rounds of visiting Buddhist temples. He openly alleged that the “Yahapalana government” was planning to close down critically important army camps in the North and East. He claimed that those camps were important to national security and closing down was a grave mistake. When TV channels went to North and East to report the true situation exist on the ground, finally it came up that in fact all those camps were closed down during his administration and none of the army camp was closed down under the Maithripala regime so far. Former president Mahinda should have known the factual situation but his intension was not talking about facts. Perhaps racism needs distorted facts.

When racism is supported even rhetorically by a fairly large group of parliamentarians and a former president, a group of people with extreme views went to Wilpattu not to find out the true facts but to create racial disharmony between Sinhalese and Muslims. Former president Mahinda did his part on this issue. Asian Tribune reported it as follows:

“Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who raised his voice on Wilpattu for the first time in a public meeting which was telecast by a private TV channel during the weekend, said “We have to preserve our national heritage. Wilpattu is one such heritage and we cannot allow such national assets to be destroyed. This appears also to have taken place even when I was in power but we did not know that such a thing was taking place at that time.” (Asian Tribune, May 11, 2015)

Finally, Matara rally became a place where racial rhetoric was used maximum to discredit the Maithripala Sirisena’s administration. Minorities were really shocked after that event. Country’s peace was a concern about many concerned citizens. President Maithripala Sirisena was cornered. Subsequently, many negotiations might have taken place to prevent Mahinda getting nominations because president Sirisena might knew that giving him nominations would make an irreparable damage to his image and integrity, at least in the short term. Finally, Mahinda got nominations. Racial rhetoric subsided. Peace preserved. As I mentioned above, peace should be the focus of any serious Statesman. Is this what president Maithripala Sirisena wanted to achieve in giving nominations to Mahinda and his clan? If this is the case, then president Maithripala will ensure that no unsubstantiated racial rhetoric uttered in the UPFA platform.

However, I guess, the Nomination Board of UPFA willfully ensured that they would do maximum disrepute to president Sirisena. They never considered the wishes and aspirations of the president. This was amply evident from providing nominations to Tissa Attanayake and Jayantha Ketagoda. Also, it was evident from media briefings that both Susil Premajayantha and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa call all the shots. Immediate prior to nominations, they made it clear that their words would prevail, not president Sirisena’s. In such circumstances president Sirisena might not have had any option other than distancing him from nominations even though he tried to prevent some big shots crossing over to UNP.

Such distancing cannot be without much visionary thinking. It could be a situation to let them do it and own it. It seems he is not going to own any nomination. Perhaps we will see that he would hold accountable all the members of the Nomination Board for the mess they have done for the good image of president. The country might need such signaling of firmness immediately after the election. Immediately after the election the President Sirisena might get a space for such decisive actions. President must ensure that he make things happen and it is not Anura Priyadarshana Yapa or Susil Premajayanth who make things happen. Such signaling is important for political stability.

I hope President Maithripala Sirisena is a man with unprecedented courage. Also I hope that his focus will be to maintain peace and political stability.

I wish to end this brief essay by quoting something known as Leadership Code published in Forbes magazine under the caption “Judging Obama As A Leader.” In this “code” there are five rules. I omit a few lines and words in order to increase readability. Without any comment I submit them as follows:

Rule 1: Shape the future. Obama clearly is a visionary with a new approach to politics. He has proclaimed a strategy for moving the country forward that is vastly different from his predecessor’s, proposing shifts in our relationship with the rest of the world and in our relationships with one another…

Rule 2: Make things happen. It is easier to describe a bright new future than to make one happen. Obama’s task is to turn what he wants into what is done, using his party’s majority status in Congress as well as his bully pulpit as a world leader to cajole, collaborate, persuade and counsel others to deliver…

Rule 3: Engage today’s talent. Leaders who engage the best talent get short-term hard work done while maintaining high esprit de corps. Obama has mastered this skill. He doesn’t do things alone, and he doesn’t pretend to… In office, he took a team-of-rivals approach for selecting his Cabinet, and today he has high levels of support and engagement among his team.

Rule 4: Build the next generation. When leaders build the next generation, they pay attention to building the skills necessary not just for the short term but for the longer future…

Rule 5: Invest in yourself. The core of effectiveness at implementing the first four rules is personal proficiency. Leaders must invest steadily in their intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical improvement to be able to deal with the demands of leadership. Who am I? What do I stand for? Why? How do I get continually better at delivering on my own promises to myself?

    Dear Hema Senanayake,

MS spoke on National TV today and explained all his decisions.
He aired his stand on MR without any ambiguity.
No room was left for speculation.

I thought his decision making was sound.

    Kind Regards,

‘Thinking Of A President’ – It is time to think of a Prime Minister to strengthen the hands of the President.

I am going for Mahinda. He is the man we want. He is an achiever like my former leader Prabakaran. Prabakaran took the gun which I supported then and he became the victim of the enemies gun.

Mahinda is not a gun carrier and he was democratically elected and defeated the LTTE. He has a big vision for Sri Lanka.

He fears in 50 years time Muslims will overwhelm all the other communities as their production lines are supersonic and works in multiples. Mahinda will bring the Chinese laws of one child for one family to curb this menace.

When I met him before his 8/1 defeat, he was articulating very pragmatically on the issue. He said why should we copy only western laws and that he will go further to incorporate what is good in China as well.

He was telling how pregnancy could be prevented permanently by legalised removal of wombs and vasectomy – s step going further than China which I welcomne.

Nirmanal, I am sorry to tell you this, but you are not helping the situation with your biased and racist comments.
In case you have not noticed our world is suffering mainly due to racism and religous intolerance.

I do not agree with what all you guys have said. Think of realism and reflect it in your dealings. One of the issue is that Sri Lanka must bring in stringent birth control methods to manage its population.

Breeding by a section of the population causes so much long term problems and will lead to terrorism in the future. Removal of the womb after the first baby must have statutory effect.

Sri Lanka has produced enough donkeys and maggots. We must work towards producing high quality babies for our solid nation building process. I will influence Mahinda to give effect legislative powers to administer birth control in Sri Lanka. As I said before, he is very supportive to bring in the much needed change.

You may call me by any humiliating names. But I am resolved like Mahinda and will not cow down to the vicious charges.

Mahinda is experienced. By producing three, instead of one, he learnt his hard lessons.

If he had planned it with one and only (Namal), we would have seen putha becoming an aspirant of the nation.

Sadly he gave birth to three musketeers and there you are what more Mahinda has to lean to introduce a stringent family control heaven for Sri Lanka?

            mike, think wisely like me.

    Yes, Racism Nothing else.

Cannot use Language any more. Only Racism Remains.

MR and Gotabaya Rajapaksa tried to use Racism earlier but back fired.

It is all about the Welfare and hegemony of Mahinda Rajapaksa, His family, extended Family and Cronies.

They all need to be washed out, out and out.

MR will be relegated to the dustbin of history. He will not even get 3million votes with his openly racist talk and unapologetic behavior. Ask his Brother In Law about arrogant corruption. MR said “Mey miniha magey nama kanawa” but he NEVER fired his own incompetent brother in law. His close cousins were Ambassadors even to the US where the ethically challenged cousin of his who cheated on his tea partners was made Ambassador. Udayanga is absconding. MR has not changed; he has not shown regret nor asked for forgiveness for his dictatorial personality cult rule with an iron fist. Gota did great work but they were all intolerant of any criticism. Who ever heard of a Def.Secy abusing a journalist in filth before Gota? NO MORE family rule and arrogance. NO MORE bullying and using filth even on your own friends like Susil Premajayantha MR. Enough of your vainglorious power grab. If you retired after 2 terms the entire nation would have treated you as a hero and also forgiven the corrupt acts and the commissions. SO now you will be hoisted by your own petard. You will LOSE big time to sensible SINHALA BUDDHISTS voters who know better than the Hambantota savages. YOu will NOT be able to win in Kurunegala.

This is what I call a superb investigative journalism. Broad minded and impartial.

Srilanka needs journalists like this to hammer into ignorant voters to inform them how it’s important to be racially tolerant and understanding which will lead to solve this racial problem which had prevailed and destroyed our country for the past few centuries let alone for the past few decades of what we have witnessed.

Similar to Rabid dogs running after the Rabbits.
The crafty politicians played the game well for their own benefit.
The next government should make it a priority to try and solve this problem and let the minority communities live peacefully too.
Teach the majority that the minority too belong to this land and learn to live harmoniously.
The politicians like MR , SWRD JR and others created this venom among the voters for their own benefit.

What’s the point of creating the Devils and then try to kill them all in the name of wiping out terrorism and call themselves a SAVIOUR in the name of destroyer of terrorism.

This is all a political game and that game was won by MR. Soon afterwards he made himself the MESSIAH of his deeds and patted his back. The result was uncontrollable and unimaginable by doing so he became the “Pariah ” of the civilised nations.

A good lesson to be learnt by all future dictators.
I hope many more good citizens of srilanka who wants peace and stability in the country would read Mr Hema Senanayake’s article and understand the importance of peace in the country rather than fighting for petty politics.
PUT THE COUNTRY FIRST FOR THE FUTURE GENERATION.

Rajapaksa will definitely use racism as a tool to regain power in the coming elections. His track record is so appealing that racist rhetoric is the only way by which he can persuade the the Sinhalese in sufficient numbers to vote for him to get back to power. The near complete lack of ethnic minorities in the UPFA nomination list clearly shows what their intentions are. These regressive forces led by Rajapaksa must be defeated at any cost and I firmly believe the coo on people will not fall for the divisive and corrupt gang’s machinations to win back power.

“Rajapaksa will definitely use racism as a tool to regain power in the coming elections.”

      Hang on for a second.

He has a formidable challenger in this election. Sivajilingam, a member in the NPC is contesting against MR in Kurunagala electorate. What a fantastic strategic move on the past of Tamils. It is now the responsibility of Sinhalese and Buddhists to show their secular credentials.

      Read this news item:

Campaigner Against “Genocide” Challenges Rajapaksa in Kurunegala

      By P.K.Balachandran

COLOMBO: M.K.Sivajilingam, a leader of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO), a member of the Northern Provincial Council (NPC), and the prime mover of the February 10, 2015 NPC resolution condemning “genocide” of the Tamils in Sri Lanka, is contesting the August 17 Lankan parliamentary elections against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Kurunegala District.

Sivajilinagm told Express on Tuesday that he is not contesting as TELO or as part of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), but as an Independent. He has put up a list of candidates as an “Independent Group”.

Asked why he is contesting when he or his group has little or no chance of winning a seat in the overwhelmingly Sinhalese majority Kurunegala district, Sivajilingam said that the main idea is to draw the attention of the country and the world to the Tamil cause.

“I want to draw the attention of the Sinhalese masses to the need to settle the National Question, which is the Tamil question. I want to tell them that the Tamils do not want separation but only a fair amount of devolution within a united Sri Lanka.”

“I may not able to hold public meetings and go from house to house, but I will get a chance to speak to the voters through the time allotted on radio and TV and hold press conferences,” he said.

Denying that Rajapaksa alone is his opponent, Sivajilingam said that he is also opposing the present government led by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

“ While Rajapaksa was openly hostile to the Tamils, Sirisena and Wickremesinghe have neglected the Tamils after promising to meet their demands,” he said.

Though a member of TELO, which was anti-LTTE, Sivajilingam was the only Lankan Tamil who looked after Tiger chieftain Velupillai Prabhakaran’s parents, Thiruvengadam Velupillai and Parvathy Ammal, till their death, after Prabhakaran died fighting at Nandikadal in May 2009.

Other Tamils, including close blood relations of the slain leader, took no notice of his ageing and ailing mother. It was Sivajilingam who conducted Parvathy Ammal’s funeral.

TELO is part of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and yet the TNA leadership did not give a ticket to Sivajilingam.

“It seems the TNA leaders do not want active politicians and genuine field workers,” he said.

The near complete lack of ethnic minorities in the UPLF LIST CLEARLY AND PATHETICALLY SHOWS IS NOT BECAUSE OF MR’s RACISM BUT DUE TO THE FACT NO TAMIL CANDIDATE CAME FORWARD TO SUPPORT HIS CAUSE EXCEPT THE FOOLHARDY BOOTLICKER KARUNA FROM THE EAST CAME FORWARD BUT HE TOO WAS REJECTED DUE TO HIS TRACK RECORD.
THIS I IS MY CONCLUSION FOLLOWING MY ANALYSIS
THINK ABOUT THE PSYCHOLOGY NO RIGHT THINKING HUMAN WOULD JOIN HIS LIST. THE TAMILS AND THE MUSLIMS GOT THE BRUNT OF HIS RACISM SO IT WOULD BE NAIVE TO THINK OF THEM TO BE ON HIS PARTY LIST .

Appears no candidates came forward from the minorities.

Thank you Hema Senanayake for your excellent analysis.

In my view, Sri Lanka is changing for the better after Jan 8th. I think it is mainly due to the blessings by both Bragaspathy and Budha ( Guru & Brain ).

Look at people like Maithiripala Srisena , Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Sivajilingam and similar ones who are from humble backgrounds. MS from Polonaruwa, Anura Kumara from Tambuttegama and Sivajilingam from NP , & they are not like the racists Dr.Dayan Jayatilleke, HLDM and other highly educated racists.

If MR is a believer in a unitary state with equal rights to all Sri Lanka n’s regardless of race, language, religion or cast he should contest in the North and East or make one of the Rajapakses contest in the North & East. Rajapakses are separatists. They use religion, language, cast, race as their weapons and are terrorists. They pause danger to SL as a Republic. Their main aim is to bring dynasty rule.
Hope ordinary people of SL from The South, North, East & West will become more wiser on 17th August and vote sensibly to take SL to a new era.

“MS from Polonaruwa, Anura Kumara from Tambuttegama and Sivajilingam from NP “

In December last year Sivajilingam tossed the maze during Northern Council meeting.

I am told he also tossed the maze when he was an MP earlier.

      He suffer from Maze fetish.

“he was telling how pregnancy could be prevented permanently by legalised removal of wombs and vasectomy – s step going further than China which I welcomne. “

That is what they are already doing to the Tamils in the Govt hospitals. That issue was there just after 2009. Plantation Tamils are the more affected victims.

    Thinking Of A President:

The Title should have been THINKING OF THE NATION.

Mahintha is a Man with a Message but without a Vehicle to Propagate.
If he succeeds in the August Election he will take the Nation to its BURIAL Ground. Dont forget Hitler won the election and managed to destroy Germany to Smithereens.
But Sri Lanka wont be so lucky.

    Let us share your thoughts.

1)Hence, with the same focus, I prefer to investigate the impact arising from the provision of nominations to former president Rajapaksa and his clan.

*** This is in line with the promise MS gave to MR and his Clan the Morning after. There was no CONTRACEPTION to prevent CONCEPTION.

    2) If the president Mathripala Sirisena had consciously decided rather than being succumbed to pressure to give nominations to Mahinda Rajapaksa and his group, in my view it was the best decision available for him to make after the Matara rally conducted by pro-Mahinda activists.

*** This is the big question.
    Was it consensual Sex
    or
    Rape.

    I think it was RAPE.

    3) As we know it in Sri Lanka racism is a severe threat to peace. All kind of racism is bad for the country. TNA did not give nominations to former LTTE members. Perhaps, TNA wants to deter racism in the North and East. In the South, prior to the nominations, pro-Mahinda activism wanted to be based its activities on Sinhala-Buddhist racism.

*** But there is a difference here. MSs Kingdom is like a Licenced Night House where anything goes. But TNA are in a Gestapo Country.

    4) MaithripalaFor an example, when Gotabaya Rajapaksa was summoned by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, pro-Mahinda activists were there in front of the Bribery Commission to protest against summoning Gotabaya. The activists who went there held a lion only flag instead of the real national flag. It was not an ad-hoc event; instead it symbolizes the true nature of protesters or the sentiment the protesters wanted to exploit. That sentiment was racism nothing else.

*** But this is Sinhala Lanka and the Breeding Ground of Anti Minority Rhetoric and that is what wins votes.

    5) Then, the former president Mahinda himself began to use racist rhetoric during his rounds of visiting Buddhist temples. He openly alleged that the “Yahapalana government” was planning to close down critically important army camps in the North and East.

*** That is his Normal Breath with bad odour. But for the Subjects it is a Breath of FRESH Air.

    6) When racism is supported even rhetorically by a fairly large group of parliamentarians and a former president, a group of people with extreme views went to Wilpattu not to find out the true facts but to create racial disharmony between Sinhalese and Muslims. Former president Mahinda did his part on this issue. Asian Tribune reported it as follows:

*** I am not a Historian but isnt this what SWRD ( No offence to you CBK but facts are facts ) did.

    7) “Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who raised his voice on Wilpattu for the first time in a public meeting which was telecast by a private TV channel during the weekend, said “We have to preserve our national heritage. Wilpattu is one such heritage and we cannot allow such national assets to be destroyed.

*** You are confused. Wilpathu is full of Animals. Give some credit to him. He was referring to Animal Heritage.

    8) Finally, Matara rally became a place where racial rhetoric was used maximum to discredit the Maithripala Sirisena’s administration. Minorities were really shocked after that event. Country’s peace was a concern about many concerned citizens. President Maithripala Sirisena was cornered.

*** This was the icing on the Cake and the Birthday is sometime in August. I dont know when because I dont know when the Umbilical Cord was Severed and the Milk started to flow which was full of Natural Goddnes such as the one Mahintha referred to above.

    9) I hope President Maithripala Sirisena is a man with unprecedented courage. Also I hope that his focus will be to maintain peace and political stability.

*** How do you arrive at the above. While he was being Raped publicly why didnt he shout for help instead of opening his legs.

    10) I wish to end this brief essay by quoting something known as Leadership Code published in Forbes magazine under the caption “Judging Obama As A Leader.” In this “code” there are five rules. I omit a few lines and words in order to increase readability. Without any comment I submit them as follows:

Rule 1: Shape the future. ” Where it is non Existent”

Rule 2: Make things happen. ” You cant do it with a Walking Stick when you dont have a Magic Wand.

Rule 3: Engage today’s talent. ” They are all what I woiuld call ” Ninja Turtle”

Rule 4: Build the next generation. ” That was built 3000 years ago. We just have Reincarnation of the Same.

Rule 5: Invest in yourself. In what Building Castles fit for a KING.
