TNA Backs UNF Government As It Existed Prior To Oct 26: Informs President In Writing

The Tamil National Alliance has informed President Maithripala Sirisena in writing that it will support the restoration of a government headed by the United National Front as it existed prior to October 26.

Sampanthan

The party, in a letter signed by all MPs, states it will also support the appointment of a nominee of the United National Front (UNF) who, in the President’s opinion, is able to command the confidence of Parliament as the Prime Minister.

The full letter written by the TNA to the President is as follows:

29th November 2018.

30, Martin Road, Jaffna, Sri Lanka

His Excellency Maithiripala Sirisena

President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka Presidential Secretariat
Colombo -01

Your Excellency,

Appointment of a Prime Minister who commands the Confidence of Parliament

We write to you in regard to the above in the background of all that has happened since 26th of October.

The Hon Member of Parliament appointed as Prime Minister on the 26th of October has not been able to prove that he commands the confidence of Parliament though one month has lapsed since the said appointment and though Parliament has met several times during this period. On the other hand, Motions of No Confidence in the said Hon Member as Prime Minister have been passed in Parliament on 14th and 16th November. The voice votes taken in Parliament have been confirmed by 122 Members signing and transmitting to both your Excellency and the Hon Speaker statements to that effect.

The view of the majority of the Hon Members of Parliament on the issue of whether the said Hon Member commands the Confidence of Parliament to be the Prime Minister has been negative and has been demonstrated beyond doubt.

We wish to point out that,

The inability of the Hon Member to prove that Parliament has confidence in him as Hon Prime Minister, 2.the votes of No Confidence passed against the said Hon Member on the 14th and 16th November pertaining to his claim to be the Hon Prime Minister; have created a controversy in the Country as to whether the country is without a Prime Minister, a Cabinet of Ministers, and a lawfully constituted Government for more than a month.

We respectfully submit that this situation should not continue.

In the circumstances to ensure that an Hon Member of Parliament is able to command the confidence of Parliament as Prime Minister we the Members of Parliament of the Illankai Thamil Arasu Kadchi, will support the restoration of a Government headed by the U.N.F as it existed prior to 26th October/ the Appointment of a nominee of the U.N.F who in the opinion of Your Excellency is able to command the confidence of Parliament as Prime Minister.

We consider it our duty to communicate the above to you, Yours Sincerely,

Messers Samapathar , Abraham and their TNA have no Confidence in Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa…

Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa had the support of 5.2 Million Voting Age inhabitants confidence in 2015
Wonder how much it is now.

Battle Lines are clear.. UNP & TNA are together.
The great majority of the inhabitant population who are the rural poor Sinhala people have a choice especially with regards to their and their generations Future in their own Homeland.

    One thing though .
Do the Tamil people in Jaffna have confidence in the TNA?.

eclared war on the great majority of the Inhabitant Population which was 5.2 Million in 2015.

The political brat Namal Baby on 26 October 2018 promised to meet the Tamil detainees some of them have been in remand prisons for nearly 20 years and he wanted them release as soon as possible.

Do you know as to why both haven’t happened yet?

Democracy all about respect the rights of all the citizens of this country. Not about Majority or Minority opinion or their right. Rather rights of all the people. People given a choice and a govt formed. Right or wrong given a choice to manage the countries administration and economic. If the view point of people changed during this period then in another 5yrs time people got a vote to say so. Absolutely no reason for an individual or a party keep going election because they fancy about it. The Prez reiterate in many times including the comment about Butterfly talk clearly indicate got problem with an individual at a personal level than policy level. If policy of the govt is the problem he would have said he can’t work with UNF altogether.

Therefore if you really stand for the right please voice for the right. Don’t bring religion, language, wealth or cast as an identity to survive.

People of Sri Lanka, North or South have finally said “enough is enough ” to the
two major parties that ruined the country and its reputation since Independence. Their eyes are now strained on two parties JVP & TNA as these two parties stood together and fought tooth & nail to protect Democracy, against many odds, in this country, from being hanged by the author of the 19th amendment to the constitution Mr. Sirisena. It goes without saying that the other minority parties too supported the
    the above parties.
There is no doubt that the Tamils of N & E will vote for TNA and to save face, Mr. Wigneswaran, Douglas Devananda & Gajendra Kumar should stay away from contesting the General election, if called by the Supreme Court. sooner, as there is a possibility that our country’s judiciary will not tolerate and overlook a situation where our country is being run without a Parliament, Speaker, PM and Cabinet, which are the hall marks of democracy and anything less will leads to the path to dictatorship.

Mr. Dissayanayke, the versatile leader of JVP sees eye to eye with the TNA and the minorities and stood
their grounds to protect democracy, tho’ he leads a left leaning party.. It is heartening to note that there
seems to be consensus, after long years of communal rule, among the majority & minority communities
to unite on common grounds to fight poverty..The Singhala masses should look for able leaders like JVP
Dissa , rather than getting carried away with false promises and vote for incorrigibles . I am a Tamil and having analysed the current political situation, I find that the major parties thrive on communal bash
-ings to gather their votes as an easier method than fight on principles and unless there is a change of
Govt. with policy changes, the normal pattern will follow.
Such is the situation in the country and may I request Mr. Sampanthan (TNA) to persuade the President
to proceed with the election rather than betting on the wrong horse to lead the country .

It seems at last democracy has survived, dictatorship will be doomed. Salute the brave efforts of majority Sinhalese community and minority Tamil, Muslim, Christian and other denominations standing together when it mattered most in adverse political crisis.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya should be commended for standing by his great predecessors traits to protect democracy. Dambara Amila thero should also be commended together with Patali Champika Ranawake, Rajitha Senarathna, Sajith Premadasa, Rauf Hakeem, Rishard Badiuddin, Mano Ganeshan and many young UNP/UNF leaders for standing in unison for restoration of democracy from tyrant MARA & clan.

MP’s of the TNA by this act show the country and the world even in the poisoned atmosphere of Sri Lanka’s morally devalued communalist Parliament there is still room for honour, integrity and principled politics. It requires not much time for the TNA to join hands with the discredited Sirisena and the avaricious Rajapakses to sink low and conspire – for power and filthy lucre. But the Tamil Parliamentarians have established, against great odds, the right thing by the country – North, South, East and West – must be done.

For that they deserve the nation’s applause and gratitude from us all -Sinhalese, Tamils and everyone else.

No big difference “in restoring the government which existed prior to Oct.26.” It’s the same government.
Let me clarify something AGAIN about forming a government under 19A.
TNA can support UNF, but they cannot be a part of the government under 19A which says, with the absence of a clear majority to form a government by any party, the first and the second political parties which secured the highest number of seats in Parliament should form a unity government.
I said this before. Until the next election, unity government comprised of UNP + SLFP have to continue whether we like it or not.
Even if UNF wants, they cannot form a government alone as the 19A does not allow any party who lacks majority to form a government. The unity government should be like a tandem bicycle.
The best way to solve this matter is something I suggested at the very beginning of this crisis which I didn’t pursue afterwards as I was angry with MR.
My suggestion is to have “CO-PRIME MINISTERS.”
I suggest UNP and SLFP to get together and pass a Resolution with 2/3 majority to recognize both Prime Ministers EXCLUSIVE to this Parliament. That means when this Parliament is dissolved at the expiry of 4 1/2 years or ceased to exist, the validity of the said Resolution will be nullified.
As 19A doesn’t allow UNF to form a single government, they should agree to form a unity government with “Co-Prime Ministers.”
As someone from public, I don’t want any injustice to happen to PM Mahinda Rajapaksa who was appointed by the President. On the other hand, RW’s removal is also illegal.
I don’t think people will mind having Co-Prime Ministers, as long as democracy is restored in the Parliament and the Constitution is respected.

      Champa,

A few years ago in India when they were fated with weak Parliaments
old Charan Singh was PM for some time. It is said he used to feel totally
tired by evening. The active, lively Indian media then suggested – in jest, I guess – for 3 PM’s in shifts per day.

Hats off to the TNA. They stood their ground for democracy and abiding by the constitution. The Tamils, specifically the diaspora Tamils need to start trusting them and let them do what is equitably needed for the Tamils living Sri Lanka and not what you ( diaspora Tamils ) wishing for.

TNA’s strong support for the UNP government despite the UNP government not addressing the major issues faced by the Tamil people in the North and the East is a concern. Understand not supporting MR but TNA need to be a little smarter in supporting UNP.

” In the circumstances to ensure that an Hon Member of Parliament is able to command the confidence of Parliament as Prime Minister we the Members of Parliament of the Illankai Thamil Arasu Kadchi, will support the restoration of a Government headed by the U.N.F as it existed prior to 26th October/ the Appointment of a nominee of the U.N.F who in the opinion of Your Excellency is able to command the confidence of Parliament as Prime Minister. ” That is the CT reprinted letter says.

This is the CT’s staring line of CT “The Tamil National Alliance has informed President Maithripala Sirisena in writing that it will support the restoration of a government headed by the United National Front as it existed prior to October 26. ” This line seems to crystal clear in meaning. As TNA was not a member of the previous Yahapalanaya NUG, TNA is not telling it is joining the government after the restoration.

CT followed with this line ” ……all MPs, states it will also support the appointment of a nominee of the United National Front (UNF) …..” CT’s writing is suggesting the word “Will also Support” is meant only “will accept as the PM”, but not suggesting that TNA has given in writing to join the government, in case if the full restoration doesn’t happen and Ranil was not reappointed as PM but another candidate is appointed from UNF.

But there is some ambiguous in that line in the letter has made reasonable number of media to interpret that TNA is becoming one, new element in the restored Yahapalanaya National Unity government. But even in the latest invitation of EP to Sampanthar to talk on this matter is referring him only as OPL. I wonder how the Sinhala media is interpreting the letter and what the reaction of the Sinhala mass, when TNA opposed Old King becoming PM, but now willing to join Yahapalanaya.

TNA appears to be between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. Devil being Ranil and deep blue see being Mahinda. It may be possible for the TNA to escape from the Devil as the devils tentacles may not hold them tight. But the Deep Blue Sea is dangerous in that there may be sharks which may not hesitate to tare them into pieces and devour them whole sale.

In effect, Both are dangerous- only they vary in degree. From Ponnambalam Ramanthan’s time Tamils have been trying to save the Sinhalese on numerous occasions but the net result is the same. There is a Tamil saying” AARU KADAKKUM MATTUM ANNANUM THABIYUM- KADANTHA PIN NEE AARO NAN AAROO Meaning, Till We Cross the River we are Brothers (AIYA/MALLI) but once we cross the relation ship vanishes.

This arrangement is going to draw a clear line that will brand the UNP is an anti-Sinhala Buddhist rabble who will go to bed with minorities to buy their votes.

This will make it impossible for the UNP to win an election in this country even after PUK HAMU.

THAT IS GOING TO DESTROY THE LIFE LINE OF YELLOW ROBED NGO MERCHANTS LIKE US. LITRO WILL NOT PAY US AGAIN.

This has to be stopped through Satyagraha. People, unite!

TNA taking this stand at this juncture is admirable. That said I must say it is too little too late. Mahinda the Megalomaniac Rajapaksha should have been out of politics and facing trial for war crimes and human right violations by now. TNA and their Backers UNP were pussy-footing around the issues and let the opportunities slip away.

People of the North and East must decide now where they are going to cast their valuable votes. It should never be to TNA and their puppet MPs who are just there to make up the bloody numbers. People please just look back and see what have they done for you to deserve another term in office.

Kick the sons of bitches out of office and let Mr Wickneswaran have a go at negotiations with the Sinhalese masses.

According to TNA, Ranil has already agreed to repeal laws that ban terrorism, and not to engage in activities that politically affect Eastern and Northern provinces without prior consultation with TNA. Both these secret agreements tantamount to early steps of partition of the country. Ranil the traitor does it again. Time he was kicked out from the parliament before he did any more damage to Sri Lanka’s unitary status.

Last paragraph, which is the Kernal of the letter, ask President Srisena to appoint anyone from UNF who the President chooses and whom the UNP as a block will support. Pres has said before that he will never appoint RW. Has RW agreed with TNA for another candidate. If they have not TNA’s last paragraph has no substance. If no one from UNP accept President”s nomination then TNA”s last paragraph is for negotiation for conditions under which the president will appoint RW. The conditions may be 1. Agree for a caretaker govt. 2. Agree for a dissolution of parliament after passing the Accounts and then elections.

What ever the politics of political parties composition of current Parliament members are basically corrupted lost all credentials and confidence among the majority people of our all nationalities .There is not any possibilities at any nook and corner of democracy reorder of Parliamentary integrity and its function time being.
That is why people of majority of 90% voters irrescapative of political differences want immferdite to elected their right person and rational members in chamber which that be relatively good in politics..
We know there is possibility to restate democracy norms lost since 2015 January 8th has to replace some point .
I view in shake of people of our land as citizens of Island apple to that judiciary look at the interest of People not that interest of so-called political parties narrow vision..

TNA is in a difficult situation. in this crisis but at the same time it helps to resolve some vital issues of Tamils such as the release of Political Tamil prisoners with no case filed against them. getting back the land to the Tamils from the Army, Reduce the power of army in North and East, proving more powers to NPC and EPC etc Promises made by politicians are like writing on water. There will be always people to pick holes on the action of TNA. TNA lost 2 MPs to Mahinda’s Chinese money. Unity among Tamil speaking people is very vital in this situation. They contributed to sustaining democracy along with Sinhalese. Majority community should reciprocally respect the rights of the minority community without following communal policy in the future
