‘Unholy Alliance’ Sells Funeral Against Sobitha Thero’s Wishes

The incumbent government’s attempt for a ceremonial cremation to deceased Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero, is a violation of his last wishes.

In an interview, the Thero specifically calls for his body to be donated to the “Akshidaana Sangamaya” ( Eye society) and not to be cremated.

SobithaThe Chief Prelate also called for his body to be handed over within a single day to the said organisation and said that he was vehemently opposed to any fanfare.

“I am completely against any sort of cremating ceremony Once you are dead that’s the end of it. I just want my body to be donated to the Akshidana Sangamaya so that they could take any organs necessary and to bury the rest” he said.

He further said that he does not want any expenditure with regard to his funeral.

“I dont want millions spent on a casket, nor do I want committees appointed to organise my funeral. Why do we need to spending so much money on them?. My body is a ‘ mala kuna’ and thats how it should be treated. I am against all of this unnecessary nonsense” he said speaking on the subject.

However, in stark contrast to the wishes of the Thero the Government has called for a massive ceremony to be held on November 12th at the Parliament grounds and declared the day as a national day of mourning,

The cremation is completely in violation of the Theros wishes.

The fact that the cremation is taking place close to a week after his death is also a violation of the deceased activists wishes.

Sending the video the Colombo Telegraph one of the closest and longstanding aides of the Chief Prelate said the Government is suing the Thero’s funeral for their narrow political objectives.

“This is the same thing that Mahinda Rajapaksa did, to eye wash the people. This unholy alliance of Sirisena and Ranil are doing the same thing with our Hamuduruwo. he never wanted such fanfare for his funeral and what they are doing has caused many of us who were close followers of his, alot of heartache” he said.

During the final stages, the Chief Prelate was critical of the conduct of the Government he helped bring into power, saying that they have gone on a very different path than what was intended.

I agree with the statement that the government, aligned with the herd of corrupt wolves that joined it, completely deviated away from the original objectives. The President hardly touches on the subject of his noble aim, and wheeler and dealer RW is spending his energy protecting Rajapakshas and all other Royalist crooks from legal and highly deserved retribution.

That said,I should say Venerable Sobhitha, my hero too, has given up everything including his body for the good of the people. He died in Singapore, so lost the chance to give up his body in parts. He may have been embalmed by now at Jayaratna’s, so nothing in his body is good for any benefit of a living being. Sorry, but his expressed wishes are no longer meaningful or practical.

Given these circumstances,it is fitting and honorable to give this national hero a highly deserved national funeral ceremony that only the State could provide. I doubt if it would upset his next of kin and close family.

What I would like to know however is which of the fake politicians that is shedding crocodile tears for him would be willing to self immolate in the funeral pyre. That would be the ultimate test.

      Bo,

Your points are well taken – except the one about self-immolation.

I am not quite sure what Venerable Sobhitha would have wished for the nasty, selfsh politicians, but am certain he would not have wished for self-immolation by any one, particlraly the rare politicians with any goodness in them.

Perhaps a more suitable way of honoring the venerable priest and showing sincerity would be for the politicians to donate to or establish orphanages, libraries, care-facilities for the elderly – and do that using their private wealth – and not by diverting Govrnment funds under their control.

LOL, I think you were wide off the point Kumar! This being, none of those shedding crocodile tears is a friend loyal enough to self-immolate, not that I was promoting it; it was just a figure of speech. All of them were self-serving, egoistic individuals, traitors to the cause that Venerable Sobitha was serving. Alas, Honor and Politics do not go together!

“Chetanahan Bhikkhave Kamman Vadami ,Chetayita Kamman Karoti Kayena, Vachaya, Manasa” (in Pali language) -Lord Buddha
—O Monks, the intention is the Karma, not the action itself one performs by Body, Speech and Mind.

Here what’s govt. intention ? It doesn’t look they go against wishes of Most Rev. Sobitha but to respect him by giving him state funeral ,

if so, Govt. does the right thing, of course getting a political mileage is not ruled out,

On the other hand if Govt. does exactly what the Monk said ,
they would get caught off guard ,
because the corruption in governance ,
inaction against clear cut corrupt cases like Avnat Garde are totally the opposite of the Monk’s wishes.

So typical of the Yahapalayana Bulldozing their way overriding the wish of the priest ! A tamasha at any cost .

I heard the tape. I am further convinced he is a good man. One who had understood the teachings of that great Indian sage Gauthama, the Buddha.
The greatest service the present society can do is to emulate and honour the principles for which he lately stood for. Knowing our low-grade
politics as we do, there is little doubt a group of conspiring individuals will try to build a cult around the personality of this good Buddhist priest to gain political mileage.

The present rulers who came to power mainly through the efforts of the organizations led by the Thero did not listen to him when he was alive. Why should they listen to him when he has passed away?

Thank you CT for raising this obvious abuse of the thero’s wishes but noone commented.

The ‘unholy alliance (as you have correctly called) is trying to ride the monk’s popularity wave which was declining due to people’s dissatisfaction about the crowd he helped bring to power.

Maithripala Sirisena siad, when Rev. Sobhita criticised the size of Cabinet, that he doesn’t understand politics!

Sirisena, the same hypocrite, then sent him to Singapore at government expense, but it is clear that a broken heart caused his illness and death.

Sirisena will not be able to wash his hands of this sin by granting him a grand funeral at the parliament grounds.

      What a useless man!

Well ,well well, How shocking of these turn around ? Why this poor Hamuduruwo’s wishes were not honoured??
Did RW And SIRI made all these decisions without consulting anyone? I am sure it was public knowledge that what his last wishes were.

The Government had not only upset him when he was alive now upset his soul by not respecting his last wishes too.
The Nation and his Family will never forgive for this mistake, hope they will remedy this ASAP.

What do we say now ? The Donkey follow the Donkey nothing happens except Neh. ! Neh! Neh. Or Blah ,Blah, Blah.

By the way this is not the time to score POINTS BY MR….. BACK…. SCRUBBERS.
SO MUCH RUBBISH COMING OUT ON THE DEATH OF THIS POOR SOUL.
PRAY FOR HIM TO REST IN PEACE NOW ATLEAST , SHOULD BE A WARNING FOR THE STIRRERS..

So called “VIPs” visiting Kotte Naga Viharaya should be politely asked to line up for their turn. Like other citizens who are sincerely grieving. Who stand in a line for a long time.

I even saw Basil Raja. Agree he has a right to pay tribute. Though he was exactly the kind of criminal “politician” Sobitha Thero was working to cleanse the system of.

At the very least, Basil Raja and his ilk should be asked to stand in line. Before coming in. Rather than turning up in a GOSL sponsored luxurious SUV. Driving straight in. Claiming they are VIPs. Exactly why are these guys considered a VIPs? Please explain.

Basil Raja has absolutely no reason to claim such special treatment. He is indicted for stealing from the state.

    Cheers!

Hamudhuruwo’s Wish still can be archieved may be minus the body part Donation as it may be too late.
The reverend expressed his wish when he was in SL but the uneventful happened in a foreign land .

So RW need to go on a REVERSE THROTTLE TO ACHIEVE PART OF HIS WISH. That’s more important than getting into point scoring vandetta..

Will our PM Batalanada Ranil stand up for his Buddhist Spiritual Leader at least now, and ensure the Monk’s last wishes are fulfilled?.

Or is he gong to go the same way as he has done, since his handler our President Sira put him in the “naughty corner” after Ranil rescued hi mate, Singapore Man from Sira’s wrath?..

Sobitha Thero seems to have had a magic spell on people with his aura of genuineness and self-effacing charm….so much so that even those who are unwilling to follow his political path for selfish reasons are rushing to pay their respects. In Sri Lanka you can always put on a show….for better or worse.

As a person who have exactly the same last wishes, I greatly respect Sobitha thro’s way of thinking and seriously think it should have been fulfilled.

But unfortunately this wish expressed in an interview does not make it an official will. It should have been written or at least someone closest should have been informed on this. On the other hand he died in Singapore which makes it impossible to donate eyes or tissues due to the time constraints.

It is seriously worng someone to seek political advantage of thero’s death but I seriously doubt motives behind people who raise his last will too. I think with or without knowledge of a proper last will they are also trying to take political advantage of this! Think about the stories some will create if thero was not given a state sponsored funeral…

“On the other hand he died in Singapore which makes it impossible to donate eyes or tissues due to the time constraints.”

      Niro, What was the problem?

Singapore has facilities for Organ Donation, if that was the Thero’s Wish. He did not believe that Singaporeans are any different from Sri Lankans, as did The Thero’s Teacher, the Gautama Buddha.

Why did those who took Him to Singapore, not act on His Wishes, and let Him acquire the last Merits of Organ Dane’?

Hamlet, there are couple of reasons why this is not practical…

        1. Someone who accompanied thero should know his last wishes in the first place.

        2. There are laws governing organ donation. In Singapore, if the donor has not arranged it prior to death, then his family’s consent is needed. In case of thero’s death, of course there was no prior arrangement with authorities in Singapore. When it comes to consent of family, it is really not clear who should give consent in this situation.

Therefore, organ donation in Singapore is not an option in this case. I believe, Sobitha thero had this arranged with Sri Lanka Akshidana Society.

Bloody politicians, the bastards would sell their own mothers for votes. Yahapalanaya using the corpse of a much admired man for political gain. Is there no depths that they will not sink to? Apparently not.

The two most ungrateful, selfish, arrogant individuals in the world, Sirisena and Ranil, are trying to pay back for their sins done in the immediate past by not listening to Sobhitha Thera after they came into power. They have done what Sobhitha Thera did not want them to do. (i) appointing 80-90 odd ministers (ii)appointing Thilak Marapona as a cabinet minister (iii) not taking any action against wrongdoers. Both know that people hate them specially Sirisena. Sobhitha Thera once said that lately President Sirisena leaves the audience when Thera starts giving his speech. Now they weep crocodile tears.

    So what,

The government decides to cremate the late Sobitha Thero in violation of the wishes of the Thero.

The government appointed well known unrepresentative rogues on the National List as Ministers in violation of the wishes of the people.

The president appoints his relatives to government positions and gives preferential treatment to his children in violation to his own promises to the people.

And the list of violations goes on.

A good example of misuse of any potentially politically useful material by Politicians. Sobitha Thero’s wishes should be paramount. How beautiful it would have been if the President and PM made a statement eulogising him and in the course of that made a statement that no State Funeral would take place in accordance with the late Thero’s wishes. But that would have been too much to expect from a Regime who promised so much and delivered so little.

The government not only going against the Thera’s last wishes it is ridiculing the great priest by having the army performing the “Last Post” near his casket. Obviously this isn’t a Military funearal. According to Wikipedia The “Last Post” is either a B♭ bugle call within British Infantry regiments or an E♭ cavalry trumpet call in British Cavalry and Royal Regiment of Artillery (Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Artillery) used at Commonwealth military funerals and ceremonies commemorating those who have been killed in war. The government after coming into power neither listened to what the Thera said when he was alive nor dead.

The Rev Sobitha’s request (video above) should be aired on all the TV channels for the public to be aware of how his wishes are being disregarded – just like his advice to MS and RW regarding Yahapalanaya.

    What a bunch of low-life’s!

Respect his last wishes articulated in the TV interview, although his organs so cannot be donated because of the location he died. He knew his body was not ‘ He’. The body is only a vehicle that served ‘ Him’. It is junk now. Remember him , his services and what he stood for in his more mature years. Let us not pay elaborate, expensive and unsolicited homage to the body that is junk, having slowly, steadily and unscrupulously eroded the ideals he stood for. Swear and commit yourselves to establish good governance and bring forward good, qualified and able persons to serve the people. This is most honest and sincere tribute we can pay to HIM.

Why? ……… I guess because when someone dies, the retinue panics, not many people think straight and cool; because he might not have written his wishes down and did not carry an organ donation card with him; because his next of king might not have been there in Singapore. There are all sorts of reasons. Attributed to Lord Buddha, I have read in books that there are 5 factors about death, which one accurately predicted or decide in advance, I presume for a natural death: exact reason for the death, timing of death, exact location of death, what would happen to the body, where one would be reborn after death

        Hamlet,

    Rulers of the country,

Please allow the Rev. Sobitha thera’s funeral arrangement according to his wish, which is not to waste money. Any money to be wasted for the funeral can be used for good causes such as providing few houses for the poor or provide school supplies to the poor kids.

I believe that the govt should respect his wishes and act accordingly without making a carnival of this sad event. It is not too late even at this juncture. I appeal to Mr.Karu Jayasooriya to honour the late monk’s humble request an have a simple funeral.

Dr RS; Although I agree with what you say, the Government have their hands Tied.

People have been Trained to Expect Huge Tamashas, at the drop of a Hat, by the Previous Government. The People will be Incited by Them, to blame the Current Government for not giving Due Respect to the Ven Sobitha at His Funeral.

In the Circumstances, Ven Sobitha would have agreed, as He would not have wanted a Riot at a Small Scale Funeral organised according to His Wishes..

Thero’s last wishes were telecast on 10th. Was his request for a simple burial known or published on the day he died. Who had this video where he clearly states that about the manner of how his funeral should take place. Unfortunately all of us heard it long after his funeral arrangements were made. Before blaming the funeral committee, pleas let us know as to why the Thero’s views were not broadcast before the arrangements were made.

I believe the late Sobitha thero standing out more powerful than when he was alive. His principled simple life has ignited the hopes of many. These political stooges will try to cover up their incompetence’s by praising him at his funeral. But we ordinary folks what matters is how they respect his principles he bravely stood up for.

The demise of Bhikku Sobitha is the great loss! He was an immensely educated and intelligent servant of the Buddha, and we should all endeavour to respect and revere the great prelate’s wishes.
Let us all acknowledge one of the greatest meritorious acts (“aksha dana”) Bhikku Sobitha did, in donating his eyes for the benefit of others ! The great philosophy of Buddhism is based on the theory of Impermanence- and there is no escape from that!
As much and as often as Bhikku Sobitha said, ” a wooden plank would have more use than my dead body” !
To hold long funeral orations, throwing of sand and rice, in the pathway of his cortege, the display of huge banners, pandals and other useless rituals are far from what even the great Master preached! To participate in matters such as these may only bring publicity and recognition to those seeking their ‘political ends’.
If one really and truly wishes to respect this great Bhikku Sobitha, then do please listen to his own words (and wishes) on what he declared about his demise!
“May all beings be well and happy”!
