UNP Ready To Abolish The Cancerous ‘Executive Presidency’ – Karu Jayasuriya

The Leadership Council of the UNP today said the party is ready and determined to abolish the Executive Presidency system.

Karu Jayasuriya

Karu Jayasuriya

Issuing a statement the Chairman of  the Leadership Council, UNP  Karu Jayasuriya, said; “it is a necessity of our times to get rid of this cancerous system of government. ‘Abolish the Executive Presidency’ slogan has already been established in the country. Even some partners in the governing coalition have come to the same conclusion. It is the duty and responsibility of a prudent leader to listen to that voice. Instead of allowing the leadership to get further entrenched in power, demanding the abolition of the Executive Presidency is the duty of each and every citizen in the country.”

“It is quite apparent that at the root of these unfavorable conditions is the Executive Presidential system. It certainly is a problem of systems rather than one of personalities. When such political savants like Lalith Athulathmudali and Gamini Dissanayake spoke against the Presidential system of government twenty three years ago, after having worked day in and day out to create that very same system, they would not have even dreamt of a person such as Mahinda Rajapaksa.” Jayasuriya further said.

We publish below the statement in full;

It is patently clear that the Government coalition led by the United National Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is embroiled in a crisis. The crisis has reached such a zenith, one can hardly feel, sense or detect any authentic legacy left behind by its central leader- the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). The UPFA coalition is led by some who consider the Bandaranaikes, the ones who pioneered the SLFP, as their enemies and one simply cannot disregard as trivial the pressure that is being brought upon the Coalition by some genuine SLFPers. Instead of paying sensitive attention to those who clamor for authentic SLFP policies and principles, those who hold high office in this administration are engaged in a vain attempt to destroy the unity among the opposition parties which are making an attempt at a genuine united front. It reminds one of a person entrenched in muck and excreta pointing to the lack of a hairdo of a well-dressed man.

Hiding behind the facade of ‘development’, the governing circles are indulging in an orgy of corruption, waste and nepotism. All sectors that directly impact on the day-to-day life of the average Sri Lankan such as transport, health, education, law and order, peaceful existence and general economic conditions are crumbling under the Mahinda Rajapaksa rule. Mass protests are taking place on a daily basis in almost every sector of the economy. It is even more emphasized as the Government is confronted with a serious credibility quandary in the international arena. In other words, all signals are indicative of a certain crumbling of the monolith of ‘Rajapaksism’. As enunciated by some political pundits, the country is on the threshold of bidding adieu to an uncivilized era and greeting the arrival of a civilized time.

It is beyond question that the unfortunate situation the country is faced with is solely attributable to the arbitrary manner in which the current Government leadership is navigating affairs of the State. They are behaving as if the whole of Sri Lanka is their personal property. It is no great surprise that, after arriving at the pinnacle of power on the shoulders of many whose sacrifice and hard work was immense and indispensable at the beginning but who are now treated as some ordinary men and women and utterly expendable and a source of a great headache. They are so intoxicated with power that even some of their erstwhile close friends are now seen as lifelong enemies.

Although through their own State-run media outlets they boast about many an achievement but what they are really not doing is good governance. A great majority of the country has now realized that the Government is presently involved only in propagating half-truths and outright lies. Even the support of the majority of their own Cabinet is not forthcoming, it seems. It is rather difficult to imagine that the majority of the people would support the Government when it has failed to secure a majority in their own Cabinet.

It is quite apparent that at the root of these unfavorable conditions is the Executive Presidential system. It certainly is a problem of systems rather than one of personalities. When such political savants like Lalith Athulathmudali and Gamini Dissanayake spoke against the Presidential system of government twenty three years ago, after having worked day in and day out to create that very same system, they would not have even dreamt of a person such as Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Therefore, it is a necessity of our times to get rid of this cancerous system of government. ‘Abolish the Executive Presidency’ slogan has already been established in the country. Even some partners in the governing coalition have come to the same conclusion. It is the duty and responsibility of a prudent leader to listen to that voice. Instead of allowing the leadership to get further entrenched in power, demanding the abolition of the Executive Presidency is the duty of each and every citizen in the country.

Whether it’s the UNP or the SLFP that wins the next election is not important. But we all agree that the winner should be our motherland. We in the United National Party are ready and determined to drive away this cancerous system of government. We indeed are ready to abolish a system that nurtures and looks after only one family, one person and one clan. In the next election, the issue before the voter is simple and stark. What is more important, Country or one Family?

Sorry Mr. Karu. Not in your life time.
MR family saved the country and is in the path towards development. So there is no point in removing EP as long as MR is there. Nepotism, Dictatorship, Corruption and Terrorism are nothing but fabrications of hopeless opposition.

The UNP which is run by a shameless dictator, Ranil Wickramasinghe and his crony Karu, who has lost every election but one, needs to support Sobitha Thero or CBK to ABOLISH the Executive Presidency.

UNP should NOT put forward any candidate for next presdential election because there is NO one who is suitable to be joint opposition candidate in the sorry party that has been destroyed by RW, and the UNP running the corrupt creep RW would merely split the opposition vote and deliver victory to Mahinda Jarapassa and his criminal and corrupt family and cronies…

I must agree with Don, UNP has lost all credibility under the present leadership. A joint presidential candidate agreed by all opposition parties is the best choice at present. Even JVP’s Anura Kumara is a better choice than most others I can think of. In short, we need someone who is truly honest, anti-racist, and just. It is so hard to find one among the most crooked leaders we have with the exception of a handful few. Someone who could unite this country, eliminate corruption and religious terrorism.

The UNP should first get rid o Ranil Wickramasinghe and clean up its act, before getting rid of any one else!

The UNP here is engaged its usual blame game, rather than taking responsibility for its own malaise and cleansing itself

Karu Jayasuriya cannot even draft a clear grammatical and logical statement in English! Ha, Ha, Ha, What has the UNP come to? What sort of statement is this?

When such political savants like Lalith Athulathmudali and Gamini Dissanayake spoke against the Presidential system of government twenty three years ago, after having worked day in and day out to create that very same system, they would not have even dreamt of a person such as Mahinda Rajapaksa.

TOTALLY ILLOGICAL – Latlith A dreaming about Jarapassa?! THis old man Karu is an illiterate joker!

Chairman of the Leadership Council, UNP Karu Jayasuriya,

RE: UNP Ready To Abolish The Cancerous ‘Executive Presidency’ – Karu Jayasuriya

It is good finally admit the flaws and correct it.

Can you also abolish this this Business of His Excellency being used for the President of the Republic of Sri Lanka.

Many people are going berserk here.

      See What India is doing.

Make the President Ceremonial, and make the Prime Minister the Executive,so that the level of Shills, Nepotism, Bribery can be made more diffuse and less apparent as it is now.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excellency

The issue is what is the need to hanging on to colonial era and kingdom era protocols, when the country is a Republic. US does not do it, even though the UN may like to do it because they get most of the funding from the US. All the Shills in Sri Lanka like to address the current President as His Excellency, even though it is a travesty in the use of the word Excellency.

Even in India, however newer protocol rules approved will discontinue “colonial era” styles of His(or Her) Excellency

India[edit] The President of India and Governors of Indian states were addressed as His Excellency/Her Excellency.[8] However newer protocol rules approved will discontinue “colonial era” styles of His(or Her) Excellency.

The same release states that the in Hindi (which is the other language in which official communications are released in the Central Government of India in its capacity of Rājabhāśhā: Officiating language) the style Rāshtrapati Mahoday (राष्ट्रपति‍ महोदय, Sir/Honourable President) shall replace the erstwhile Mahāmahim(महामहि‍म). The newer style will be Honourable. The corresponding changes in releases from the President’s Secretariat shall be from Mahāmahim to Rāshtrapatiji.[9] The release also talks about the styles of other dignitaries, like Governors. “The word “Hon’ble” will be used before the title of ‘President’ or ‘Governor’. The traditional Indian greeting of “Shri” or “Smt.” should precede the name.” However, “Excellency” will continue to be used, only for interaction of leaders with foreign dignitaries and foreign dignitaries with our leaders as is customary international practice.

The UNP which formulated the Executive Presidency and is run by a loser and dictator, is as big a cancer as is the Rajapaksa regime on democracy in Sri Lanka..

Indeed the failure of the UNP to behave like a responsible opposition is half the problem of the vile and corrupt political culture in the country that will need separate treatment.

What a pearler this slogan is?

Will the great majority of the inhabitant population, buy this bullshit from the puppet master. sorry the LC Boss…

Hasn’t he jumped from UNP to Rajapaksa Camp, and to Keselwatta Kid’s Buddhist Faction and now in to the lap of the Christian faction.

Matale skeletons with nail holes in the skulls will soon get Carbon dated to 88/89 according to the Forensic Medicos.

Even without it what a marvellous report card the UNP has to present to
the poor rural Sinhala masses not forgetting even the non TNA Tamil inhabitants.

83 Pogrom, 88/89/massacres, SGIA.to Tigers, decimated Govt organizations and the CTB, free Govt lands to the rich at mates rates, and a Southern Highway which was looted even by the British Engineers and Consultants leaving it to ruin just to give a few examples.

Now they are totally embedded with the Diaspora and its Western backers to set up an investigation to tell the inhabitants how bad their sons are to defeat the Tigers and save the country. And they deserve punishment for that.

It will be good to have two posters one with Ms Sisson having poodle Ranil on a leash and Ms Pillai with the Rottweiler Mangala and walking in Torrington Square, to accompany this kick ass banner “Demolish the Presidency”‘

OMG -What do we the humble day to day living simple folks fighting and struggling to meet the very, very, bare minimum do with our Politicians?????? when they are- the government everything is okay as long as they can have their way , and when they become the opposition they want every power they used to walk all over us removed over night.

The day The country was handed over to JR & his pirates the destruction began with the introduction of The Executive Presidency which bread racism , Terrorism , Drugs mafias ,contract killers etc.

Abolishing The executive presidency ,which is the often used phrase by all leaders who promised to do so when they come to power has somehow become like an opium addiction to them…

Yes not in our life time anyone will abolish it , not the present government ,not even The UNP ,for that matter I assure you not even the JVP ,, while Religion is Opium of the mass ,The political power uses the religion as opium to induce hate to keep the mass intoxicated to such a state of insanity that the people become so much enslaved that they would rather starve their children and themselves to death than accept any logic , just give them a people who are a minority to blame it all on and let them take all their frustrations on them without interfering and that is it ,

During JR ,Tamils were killed while the who damn world was watching and JR just sipped his brandy and did nothing for days to stop the massacre .

Then during Chnadrika’s time , Muslims were attacked , The Mosque destroyed , Muslims killed by Rathwahe’s sons , she did nothing about it, (how many times she would have sung the song of abolishing the executive Presidency? -it is not their fault ,its the mass)

The only time we did not see any attacks on Minorities was during Premadasa’s time.

And today ,ask every single Muslim to sincere speak from their heart of how safe and happy they are and you will be in for a great surprise ..

Sad but it is true and shocking to see almost every single SINHALESE the hate they harbor against The entire Muslim community today, it is unbelievable and can not be understood , but what is more confusing is The Muslim community’s attitude towards the situation , they do not want to accept the truth ,if they did they would have at least at this hour united and found a way to clear the many lies spread and is being still spread on a daily basis especially via the FB .

BTW Mr. Karu ,can we hear a new song please …

Karu says when Gamini and Lalith opposed the Executive Presidency they would not have dreamed of a persn like Mahinda Rajapakse. When Chandrika at the end of her term presented a constitution to abolish the Presidency the UNP’ers tore the proposal as they expected Ranil to be the next President.Fortunately Ranil lost and Mahinda won. If we think back at the secret pact that Ranil made with LTTE as the Prime Minister without consulting any of his cabinet ministers we can imagine what ould have happened to our country if he became the President. I am no fan or followe of the President and does not approve the waste and corruption in the present regime. With a UNP regime all the Ministers made a fortune. They held development as hostage to make commissions such as Southern Highway, fish canning factories, buying public assets for a song but Ministers of today can only bow down to the Rajapakses feeding on the discarded bones and no wonder they too want Presidency abolished. As long as Ranil and his Company who campaigned against the war riducling our achievements and till support the tamil extremists and India for devolution of powers lead the UNP , will ever come to power to even suggest to abolish Presidential system. Karu who joined the government duringthe war could have made a claim for the leadership as one who had the interest of the country at heart for crossing over, but is too weak to challenge Ranil. It is time that those inthe UNP with patriotic feelings broke away from the party and formed a new party to challenge the Government. They can rally around all.political parties with an interest in the country to come to a middle path in their political ideals and campaign to form a new government to fight against corruption, nepotism, wastage, and a new dawn. A new political party with interest of country as core and image of servants of public will be the light at the end of the tunnel.

This Leadership Council Leader is going to demolish the Presidency.

Senior Council member Kiriella wants to give TNA more than what his Leader Ranil offered to the late LTTE leader Prabakarn,in 2000/ 2001.

And Mr Kiriella took 6.16 minutes to explain it to the media scrum yesterday..

These seem to be the two biggest of the big ticket items in their manifesto going to the next Prez election.

Supposing Ranil does a Lazarus , which of these is going to be implemented first?.

Even our mug punters know how impotent our PM s have been under the previous system.

Therefore Ranil obviously will have to please Sambandan , the Diaspora and Cameron , Harper , Pillai first and then demolish himself?.

What a generous act would that be?.

“Senior Council member Kiriella wants to give TNA more than what his Leader Ranil offered to the late LTTE leader Prabakarn,in 2000/ 2001.”

What was Kiriella want to give the TNA.

Whatever TNA gets the rest of the Councils also will get the same powers. What are you on about?

You don’t want more powers to the people simply because Tamils too will enjoy more powers to run Tamil dominated areas.

What a shameless, self destructive, narrow minded,……… stupid man you are.

      Please fill in the blanks.

Ready To Abolish The Executive Presidency – yes we’ve heard that from several leaders but they had severe problems remembering to abolish it once they got into power. The way Karu writes anyone would think that abolishing it would solve all problems.

It’s not the Executive Presidency that is at fault (although it should be abolished), it is the lying, thieving, power hungry, corrupt people who have held that position.

The idea of the UNP Leadership Council to abolish the Executive Presidency system itself demonstrate the UNP is obsolete now. They still live in the past era. Some time back UNP campaigned to revive democracy.

First of all you all must assign some person who has the knowledge at grass root level politics to do a proper home work.
As far as the Sri Lankan politics is concerned people are not worried largely about restoration of democracy or abolishing of Executive Presidency.

The voters have now been ignited to believe in NATIONALISM through which the non discerning voters look for a leader a real buddhist leader at least to pretend in such a way to demonstrate as the mesiah of the nation.

Or else on the other hand UNP should be able to articulate and expose one by one, the difficulties faced by the people under the present rule. You should use a simple arithmetic for this.I dont think UNP can embark on such a process as you all still believe in same old fashion.

The other main reason for the UNP to find it difficult to come to power is it has not won elections by way of fighting. It has come to power due to SLFP led governments became unpopular. 1977 is a real example. BUt now unlike the past SLFP leaders, the country is reigned by a real politician who knows what the voters aspirations are.

More than the development and dividends, what the voters want is a free hand to engage in corruption at their level. Other than that the racists are working round the clock to ignite the feelings of the people. Untill you come out with a real solution to propose to the Sinhala majority with the aim of to enlighten them on what is happening and what should happen the UNP can keep on dreaming of coming to power

Mere talking of democracy, Executive Presidency, media freedom (the way media act proves how they dance to the tune of nationalists) and human right are beyond Sinhala nationalists who form the majority idea based on their irrational thinkings. The government has realized this situation very well.

There is no harm of having an executive president provided he is honest, just and a person with

But today we have an absolute uncivilised, uneducated and uncultured thug, a rogue and a moron as an executive president.

The British who gave us the parliament system were honest in their dealings. That’s why our country progressed as the best in Asia under British rule.

Similarly Politicians like DS,Dudley,SWRD,JR,Manmohan Singh,Mahathma Gandi, Barak Obama, Clinton, Bush,Tony Blair,David Cameron, Modi etc, who are honest State leaders who love their country and their people and never cheated the country.

But today in Sri Lanka we have an absolute Alibaba thug moron as the President. His friends and clients are cheap thugs and criminals like Julampitiya Amare, Kangetta,Mervin,Duminda,BBS balu sena, Gaddafi,Saddham Husain etc, etc.

It has now not only become the Family but the whole UPFA party have become Alibaba and the gang of stealers, thugs and looters.

    http://www.lankatruth.com/home/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7001:craving-for-vehicles-has-no-bounds-&catid=36:top-stories&Itemid=124

Therefore the time has come to get rid of crook Executive Presidency and all the rest of rogues, thugs and criminals who do politics in Sri Lanka.

Rescue Sri Lanka from Political crooks, thugs and looters.

Denouncing Karu is like shooting the messenger. Calling the UNP a dictatorship is like calling black as white and the other way around. These are tired old accusations made by those who have an axe to grind or money and benefits flowing to them from the current deceitful bunch of thugs running the country. These accusation have not got a shred of truth to them just empty baseless rubbish. The UNP is the most democratically run party in the country at the present time. It is a party where two rivals who contested in an open vote for the leadership sit side by side amicably willing to do what is rite for the country. This is the best we have got. Unfortunately unlike in India we will throw the baby out with the bath water and spite ourselves in the process by indulging in vituperative hateful attacks on honorable men and rewarding scoundrels.

Abolition of Presidency is a must.See what a sword in the hands of Monkeys can do. But even before that, repealing 18A and replacing it with 17A will bring back law and order(which is non-existence now) to a great extent. Remember how there was discipline in the Police Force when Late Mr.Ranjit Abeysuria,P.C. was the Chairperson of the Police Commission.

It is, to say the least, unfortunate to see so many respondents shout down Karu Jayasuriya for what is in reality a very sane and sound suggestion. Never mind the fact that JR introduced the system in the first place and that he was from the UNP. It is the honest and courageous thing to now recognise that this Constitution is deeply flawed and as has been shown from experience – and there could be no better proof than that – it is unsuitable for the good of the country and is indeed injurious to its interests. A mistake has been done. It is now admitted. There is no shame in acknowledging a mistake. So, let’s get on with fixing it.

Incidentally, I cannot understand how the likes of Lalith Athulathmudali and Gamini Dissanayake could not envisage the likes of MR becoming President. They could not have been very smart. I remember it being said that Dr NM Perera is reported to have told JR, expressing his fears about the amount of power invested in the President under the Constitution, ‘What if Felix Dias was to become President?’. Clearly, that ‘warning’ fell on deaf ears. I was also told by a former judge of the Supreme Court and an eminent jurist, after he had seen the draft of the new Constitution, that he simply did not like it – because there was too much of power concentrated in the one person, the President. There is no doubt these fears will have been articulated but JR was no less dismissive of public opinion than is MR, because of the historic mandate JR received at the General Election and of his craving for power. It did not stop there.

I do not believe this. The UNP had enough opportunities to abolish this coveted post. No one will abolish it. This liar will one day fight to sit on that hotseat as well. Abolishing the presidency is NOT the issue. A “GOOD” president can do a lot of “GOOD”.

I want an end to all this rubbish and a down to earth movement that accepts that the project of building a sinhala buddhist state has led to the marginalization of minorities and to mayhem and murder being rained down on them. I want that opposition to apologize to the minorities for what has been done to them and join the minorities in their attempt to build a COSMOPOLITAN state.
