Another Sri Lankan Buddhist monk is being attacked in the Chennai Central station India on Tamil Nadu Express train yesterday. The Buddhist monk who is a Sri Lankan national from Kandy on a pilgrimage in Tamil Nadu with a group of pilgrims.

This sad incident is a testimony to the innocence and trusting nature of ordinary Sinhalese people, and their traditional admiration of India’s “greatness.” In spite of the current anti-Sri Lankan tension in Tamil Nadu these people didn’t hesitate to go there because they trusted the essential humanity of all. It is also shocking evidence of the gutter level of LTTE supporters in Tamil Nadu. The man who hit the monk is a coward and a loser. He has nothing going for him in life. I feel sorry for him. India’s “greatness” has gone to dogs. I admire the Sinhalese people for not panicking and remaining calm. While the rowdy who hit the monk acted like an ill-bred lout, the Sri Lankan monk kept his dignity intact. He showed class in a most terrifying situation. We Sri Lankans should be proud of him. Political leaders in Tamil Nadu and Delhi should intervene to stop these attacks which need to be condemned without any reservation. Also MR should take part of the blame for this. Each time he goes to India or an Indian leader comes here, he says “13+ and political solution” but does nothing. He is internationalizing the issue by his silence and inaction. The attitude and acts of those who attacked a helpless monk is very, very despicable. This should have never happened.
But as you say, MR should be largely blamed for this turn of events. Even during the height of the war in May 2009, the Tamils in TN did not turn this violent. They protested in a peaceful manner and there were no adversarial incidences reported against SL visitors to Tamilnadu, including monks. But with the emergence of widespread allegations of RAPE and murder, and the helplessness and distress that they cannot reason with a horrific regime, and added to the Congress led Govt’s seemingly open support of a regime that allegedly murdered thousands of Tamil civilians led to the expression and explosion of vent up anger.
Many of us moderates encouraged the regime to put the past behind, move forward with the PROMISED devolution and take the TNA into confidence on the path of reconciliation and redevelopment of the area. There were thousands of idp Tamils who were willing to put behind the past and invest heavily in an area and in a nation devastated and bruised by a very debilitating war. Instead, the Rajapakses saw the end of the war as a means to consolidate their power (18A), trumpeted triumphalism, never cared or took steps to heal the wounds and pains that the Tamil civilians have gone through. It was unmitigated subjugation. The same mistake Prabhakaran made, the Rajapakses just perfected that.
History could have gone either way but the Rajapakses chose the path to Pluto’s kingdom. Their way of keeping the divison and animosity alive between the races has taken SL into a dangerous cycle of whirlpool and I won’t be wrong in saying the Rajapakses will drag SL down the muddy path and heap shame and anarchy. With their grandstanding, now the Muslims are facing the wrath.
There was a sense of relief all round after the war and there was a lot of international goodwill willing to assist SL to help move forward. How the Rajapakses squandered such goodwill and turned it into antagonism should be an endearing lesson. At that point, all the international community and India wanted was to make good the promise the Rajapakses gave – implement the 13A in full. They even promised a PLUS but now they have proved themselves to be perennial liars.
Now the situation has turned very explosive with the widespread allegations of rape that was committed to “teach the Tamils a lesson”. Even when the majority masses kept silent on these atrocities, the monks can have no excuse in holding a regime for such horrific atrocities on civilians. Whatever happened to the teachings of the Enlightened One? It is in this shade that Tamilnadu has started to look at the monks. Instead of stopping the Rajapakses in their tracks, which they could have, they encouraged the regime to commit these dastardly crimes. The JHU is a classic example of a disgrace to the teachings of Buddha. Believe me, Buddhism has taken a serious beating with its violent strain it has demonstrated in SL.
Mind you, none of these ever happened in Tamilnadu when SL was under previous regimes. There is deep sense of anger against the Rajapakses and also the Congress for supporting the Rajapakses. With Rajiv’s murder, Tamilnadu turned against the LTTE, and similarly the regime’s war should have been wages against the LTTE but with what has now been termed as genocide and worse still using rape as a means of subjugation has very much tortured the conscience and feelings of Tamils, and incidentally not only in Tamilnadu but the world over. I was very angry when I heard and saw the clips of these dastardly acts. So, the request is to conduct an independent international investigation to ascertain the truth. Instead of the loud protestations by a regime that has no trustworthy standing, and if it has nothing to hide, then the right and logical thing to do would be to agree to an international independent investigation. Nothing short of this would extinguish the flames of anguish. From here it can only get worse. Despite all the rhetoric within the country, what is clear is the Rajapakses have brought terrible shame on the country that has destroyed the very fabric of what a Buddhist nation should have been.

Yes this is shameful. But have you heard of the adage that what goes around comes around. A tourist, who came with his girlfriend to spend his holidays in SL, went back in a coffin. The main culprit is enjoying his perks and life, thanks to the Rajapakse regime.
The Mahawamsa mindset initially went for the Tamils. Then now they are going after the Muslims. Sri Lanka would be a lot better place without these monks who display a very violent streak and are a disgrace to what the Enlightened One preached and practised.
It can asserted with certainty that SL had never reached its potential because of these monks holding everything and everyone to ransom. They never allowed this country to develop and prosper and all they did was to incessantly staked up the enmity between the various races in the country. The past weakened saw number of rapes reported to Indian police. There is particularly one that involved gang rape of a Swiss Tourist. Please advise the Centre to sack the MP state government for not preventing the rape.
There were other rape incidents reported in other parts of India, most were violent and Centre did not bother to sack/dismiss all those state governments where rape is every day occurrence.
Would you now advise the Centre to sack rapist states? If that is the measure on which state governments are judged and sacked then the Centre would have to extend direct rule over the entire country.

Sri Lankans, Sinhalese, Tamils or any other, quite well know the activities of JHU, BBS, Bumiputhra etc. etc. all comprised of many buddhist monks and predominantly the riots of these groups are led by buddhist monks. We all saw/wittnessed the latest in Dambulla and the very recent in alll parts of the country against muslims. The unreasonable, uncultured barbarian type actions even by the buddhist monks were recorded by the media and published but what did the authorities DO? The silence of the law authority/government create the ‘hatred’ and animosity towards these groups including the monks who lead these barbaric gangster groups. Dear nimanta, it is not necessary to lay hands to signify the “attack”. It is barely obvious – unless you, nimanta, behave like an ostrich burrying its head under the sand or a cat closing its eyes and calling it the ‘night” – what the SL buddhist monks, who lead many groups who claim to be protecting the buddhism and the buddhist – are doing in Sri Lanka. Everyone would agree that ‘their’ actions amount to ‘attack’. However, I would not be surprised if such a buddhist monk(s) lays hands on a ‘poosari’ or any other religious dignitory for that matter as we all know what kind of patronage and protection they (buddhist monks) get from the power that be.
Just wearing a safron robe does not make a man a “buddhist monk” unless his life style displays what buddha wanted them to be. A true buddhist monk – even an ordinary citizen for that matter – lives the principles of buddha, then not only the buddhist but non buddhist too will rever that person. Do you get the point nimanta?

All violence has to be condemned. Stop all violence whether it is in Tamilnadu or Srilanka or mid sea. When poor innocent Tamil fishermen are being attacked, their boats and nets damaged, their catch robbed, they are arrested and sometimes killed, you cannot expect the Tamilnadu people to be tolerating such atrocities for long. The Srilanka government and the navy are continuously denying it and allowing this atrocity to be continued. The Indian government just makes a protest to the Srilanka government or asks Tamilnadu fishermen not to stray or go deep sea fishing to avoid attacks by Srilanka navy. Moreover the army is harassing Tamil people in Srilanka, assaulting them, destroying their properties not allowing them to get back to their original habitat, taking over their properties chasing them away, and in some instances killing them. It is obvious to any independent person that these attacks on Srilanka Tamils and Indian Tamil fishermen are being carried out with tacit support from the Srilanka government as none of the Sinhala perpetrators of crime against Tamils have been brought to book. The correct action for India to prevent Tamilnadu fishermen to be attacked is to declare a no go zone for the Srilanka navy in Palk strait and any patrolling should be a joint one with navies of India and Srilanka. To prevent attacks on Tamils in north-east Srilanka, the army should be confined to barracks, with law and order being enforced by Tamil policemen under a Tamil dominated provincial council. Until and unless violence against Tamils in Srilanka or mid sea continues, I do not see any violence against Sinhalese in Tamilnadu to abate. The problem is that Sinhalese living in Srilanka feel that they have impunity to commit violence against Tamils and no one should question it, while no one has the right to unleash violence on the Sinhalese.

The emotions of Indian Tamils has been aroused due to the rape and murder of Tamil civilians including women and children during the war and now the actions of Bodu Bala Sena against non buddhist relitions. Gothabaya who is the Secretary of Defence and who is supporting Bodu Bala Sena has to take note of this, as this is the result of his actions during the war and after the war. Its time President Rajapakse removes Gotha from his position and appoint another secretary who is from the civil service and not a family member. Further President Rajapakse should ensure that all the citizens of the country are protected, especially if Bodu Bala Sena is to create trouble after the UN resolution.

I understand your views on Tamil issue. But as a Sinhalese I know that behind all this was Justice not done to Tamil people. Not implement LLRC and not bringing justice to Tamil people and branding ev ery nothern tamil as LTTE proxy was the biggest blunder Rajapakses did, and with Militarising North and Putting Buddha statutes and building temples all over north aroused anti Sinhala sentiment in both North and TN.
I think GOSL is in a grave situation both at Politically and Militarily.
No help at all to GOSL this time where China will never in political issues. GOSL is in grave danger.
Any fool knows that they cannot play jokes with International community, but Rajapakses thought otherwise……similar to Kangetta and other cases.
Many warned, wrote advised and even mocked at Govt. to implement LLRC ASAP, but the morons did not listen. We do not know who advise Govt.on security and political issues…..but it’s a Mutt whoever advised.

One should recall the Anti Hindi movement of 1962 which shook TN to its foundations, toppled the Congress government for its insensitivity and killed the giant Kamaraj. No government could withstand the momentum. After a 57 year build up anti SL sentiment is at an explosive point. The same student movement at the forefront of language in 1962, is now spearheading ethnic solidarity in TN. The gathering force is unstoppable. It has the moral strength of 80 million behind it.
Who takes the rap? Unquestionably SL. The compulsion was to unwind from 2013 to 2009. Nothing was done. MP Sumanthiran pointed out very clearly that not a single recommendation of the LLRC was implemented. The regime’s representative proclaims before the UN in Geneva that 99% has been implemented. Do superior deciept, cheat and chicanery work? Chennai spoke.
It is pointless venting our spleen at violent elements. The onus is upon the SL government to seek the known corrective course. Assault of the Bhikku is only a slap on the face of Sri Lanka.
