Video: Buddhist Monk Led Mob Attacked Christian Church

On the 12th of January 2014, the Assemblies of God and the Calvary church in Hikkaduwa (Galle District) came under attack by mobs while engaging in worship services, says the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri-Lanka.

According to the NCEASL, both churches were engaged in Sunday morning worship when at approximately 10.00 a.m., mobs of about 300 persons led by Buddhist monks stormed the respective churches. The first to be attacked was the Assemblies of God, followed by the Calvary church. Serious damage was caused to the two buildings. Stones were thrown at the premises while some worshippers were trapped inside.

The previous night, the pastors of both churches received information of the impending attacks. They went ahead with the worship services based on the guarantee that there will be police protection for the services, says the NCEASL.

The protesting monks included Buddhist clergy from a group calling themselves ‘Hela Bodu Pawura’ as well as monks from Hikkaduwa and nearby temples. They claimed the Christian presence was illegal. The protesters obstructed the Galle – Colombo main road, creating a tense situation in Hikkaduwa. The situation prevailed past noon, with the Police unable to disperse the mob. A senior police officer who arrived at the scene gave an undertaking to the monks that the churches will be closed for 2 weeks (until 10th February), during which time a solution will be sought. The mobs then dispersed.

24 suspects including eight monks have been identified the Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said today.

Money can also buy souls today , hungry man has no special preference when it come to choosing which God , he wants a God who will feed him then and there, The Christian God does just that and even more , clothes him , shelters him and gives him dignity ,see if you can match him, otherwise best stop complaining, and blaming everyone in site, if the Muslims really wanted with the money they have they could have converted Millions of your people starting with the maids and then penetrating to their families , but do not worry they will never ever do it, if a Buddhist has converted it is only for two reason either they were inspired by the faith genuinely or just for the sake of being in love with Muslim and am still to see the ones who converted to Islam for the sake of marrying being true to their faith, most of them I have met are still half hearted except for one lady I know personally, but the ones who have converted because the faith inspired them are amazingly far better Muslims than born Muslims

      Dear benyamin,

You say “he wants a God who will feed him then and there, The Christian God does just that and even more”

Christian God did not do that because Poverty and Depravity are also God’s Creation. The Proselytizers and Evangelist are doing what God could not do.

You say “the ones who converted to Islam for the sake of marrying being true to their faith, most of them I have met are still half hearted”

You have not realised the Aim of Proselytization and Evengelism. The target is not the first generation but the subsequent generations. That’s how Christianity took hold in Lanka and elsewhere. Are those Muslim children with a Buddhist parent allowed to chose between the mother’s religion and the father’s religion?

You say “if you become sheep remember the wolves will eat you.”

Apparently, Unethical Proselytization and Evengelism is turning the sheep into wolves!

Think about it, Is Unethical Proselytization and Evangelism triggering Religious Hatred? It sure looks like it does.

      Kind Regards

Traditionally the monks and priests try to calm the lay mobs in any volatile situation. In this video, on a couple of occasions you see lay mob members are trying to calm the rampaging Buddhist monks.

    Buddhist monks??? Hmmm, good question.

Yes, those pseudo monks behave not second to rabid dogs in the video.

These are so called buddhist monks ? Has the state made any statements in this regard ?

@Off the Cuff -what a summary of whole lot of damned excuses – instead get involved with your community and help them ,empower them , did you read what I have mentioned , the problem with people like you is, easy way out blame it all on the others , or believe any crap as long as it accuses the opposite side ,read any crap written by anyone and with total prejudice support and encourage the attack on a population knowing they are a minority and in small numbers and helpless , or like the new trend that some of the monks are preaching , rob the Muslims ,as their religion approves cheating those who are not Muslims ,another crap fabricated as an excuse to harass and bully the Muslims.
Come on stop blaming everyone around and be more charitable towards your people ,pool in what you guys have hoarded and help them, it will be more honorable than sitting and blaming everyone else. And about sheep turning Wolves this is what people like you are good at twist and turn anything that will justify the wickedness burried deep down your hearts , besides if your sheep are turning into wolves, they were never sheep then , they have always been wolves in sheep clothing.

about God , to make you conceive that will be like trying to get a bunch of hooligans drunk and dancing to the tunes of boorish music to understand what Beethoven music is all about.

Finally if you find it ethical for Monks and thugs to attack unarmed civilians , which includes women and children for gathering to practice ones faith ( besides the conversion crap)and ignoring all the other illegal activities carried out in broad day light , and selling of liqueur that destroys families , gambling race bookies , robberies ,murders , raping and many more ,I can imagine what kind of a kind of a mindset you have.

Keep blaming the minorities and find excuses to suppress them and kill them like in 83,which is all what people with a mindset like of yours have been doing since the day you got independence .
What waste of bandwidth , time and energy to even replying people like you- sick to the core.

      Dear benyamin,

You have written a long harangue and ask me “did you read what I have mentioned”

More importantly, Did you read what I have written and contemplated before writing your harangue? I know that you haven’t and is blinded by a one track mind. There is no need for me to answer that ill advised harangue as my views about the perpetrators of that criminal attack is already set out right at the beginning of my post of January 14, 2014 at 5:40 pm. Hence please read and comprehend what is written before you think of writing again.

Anyone who descends to Ad Hominem attacks as a replacement to factual argument is an imbecile who thinks that Brawn is Mightier than the Brain.

You said “Money can buy souls today” That was an indication that you value money more than anything else because money brings with it power. But here on CT Rich or Poor all stand equal.

You said “when it come to choosing which God , he wants a God who will feed him then and there, The Christian God does just that and even more , clothes him , shelters him and gives him dignity”

That was an excuse in defence of Unethical Proselytization and Evangelism. Hence you are a God believer who thinks money can do anything. Perhaps you yourself indulges in it. I am not a God believer and anyone with intelligence would have noticed that.

I don’t believe what you said about God providing the materials that you said He did because I see the poor, the Rich, the destitute, the Homeless, the sick, the healthy, the beautiful and the ugly all around me. God did not create these poor souls as equals. I also see the corrupt, the criminals, all around me and I cannot believe a compassionate and omniscient God created these scum of the Earth. My religion has given me the freedom to question it. Hence I have no problem in questioning yours if you bring it up. I am not required to believe in a Holy Book unquestioningly. Hence if you don’t like to be questioned in return don’t raise those issues.

You said “Muslims really wanted with the money they have they could have converted Millions of your people starting with the maids and then penetrating to their families , but do not worry they will never ever do it,”

That arrogance derived from being Rich has a way of coming to the surface again and again. That’s not a very intelligent thing to do.

About Buddhist converting to Muslims you said “a Buddhist has converted it is only for two reason either they were inspired by the faith genuinely or just for the sake of being in love with Muslim and am still to see the ones who converted to Islam for the sake of marrying being true to their faith,”

Ethical conversions have never been a problem in Lanka. It has gone on for centuries and no one has complained.

You said “most of them I have met are still half hearted except for one lady I know personally, but the ones who have converted because the faith inspired them are amazingly far better Muslims than born Muslims”

That indicated that you are probably a Muslim as you had to have intimate knowledge of Islam to make such a judgement of “are amazingly far better Muslims than born Muslims”.

Looking at your post as a whole it was clear that you had no idea of the objective of Religious Conversions. Those who engage in Religious Conversions are not concerned about the converts they are concerned about the Children of converts.

I asked you a question, Do Muslims who marry non Muslims allow the freedom for their children to chose the religion of the non Muslim parent as it’s own. I know that they don’t and you are silent about it.

You say “about God , to make you conceive that will be like trying to get a bunch of hooligans drunk and dancing to the tunes of boorish music to understand what Beethoven music is all about.”

You follow your God I have no problem with it but if you try to debate about that God by praising Him while belittling others who do not believe in your God then you will have to answer very embarrassing questions about your beliefs so please do not try.

      Kind Regards,
      OTC

Police report to court on church attack

The Hikkaduwa police will submit a report to court tomorrow on today’s mob attack on two Christian churches in the area, police sources said.

A mob led by monks carried out the attack on Calvary Church and Assembly of God (AOG) church this morning.

Eyewitnesses at Calvary Church said that the mob stormed the premises while a Sunday mass was underway, threatened the worshipers and damaged church property.

The mob had accused the church of operating without proper authorization. The police had then urged the worshipers to vacate the premises fearing more violence.

      Dear Carmel Abeyesekera,

Yes you are correct, they are required to preach Love but they too are Human with Human frailties. Buddhist philosophy is all about disciplining the mind. Some have developed more control while others haven’t. It’s the same with Christians or Mohammedans or Hindus. That is why there are members of all 4 religions represented in Prisons here and abroad.

Parents expect their children attending church run schools to be safe within that environment but that has not been the case throughout History. You can read about some factual cases in my post of January 15, 2014 at 2:38 pm.

There are morons and perverts within any clergy. Forgetting that is not wise.

Those who fear God, have no fear of man.Neither are they obsessed with money and power.
It is difficult to believe that those who ‘peddle The Word of God for profit’ are followers of Christ..

‘Jesus warned such ” How dare you turn my Father’s House, in to a market?”(John.2.16)

Please don’t confuse Scientology and other money making cults with Christian Discipleship.

(From.’The Cost of Discipleship’ – Dietrich Bonhoeffer.)

‘Discipleship means adherance to the Person of Jesus..

“IF any man comes would come after Me” – he says.

    Nobody can be forced.’

      Dear Sandy,

Head of the Buddhist Amarapura sect Ven Madihe Pagngnaseeha, Secretary General of the Catholic Bishops´ Conference Auxiliary Bishop Oswald Gomis, and Head of the National Christian Council, Anglican Bishop Kenneth Fernando identified and underscored the cause in 1993, 21 years ago. The cause they identified was unethical religious conversions.

You said “Please don’t confuse Scientology and other money making cults with Christian Discipleship”

I posted a German Tourist’s observations in order to stimulate discussion on the very subject that the Christian Church had themselves identified as causing religious unrest. He did not focus Solely on Scientology but he has named at least two other new Christian sects involved in unethical conversions.

The Lord Jesus Christ has asked His followers to “Go into all the
world and preach the good news to all creation”

So “We must obey God rather than man”.
        (Acts.5.29., Mark.16.15)

        * Please note we are only asked to ‘share’ the message in obedience to our Lord. To listen,
accept or reject the Message is entirely up to the

          Dear Sandy,

Re “Please note we are only asked to ‘share’ the message in obedience to our Lord”

Sharing is not the problem but the unethical means employed in doing that is the problem.

The Most Reverend Oswald Thomas Colman Gomis, current Chancellor of the University of Colombo and Emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Colombo said so in 1993 in his capacity as the Secretary General of the Catholic Bishops´Conference of Sri Lanka.

Agreeing with him was the Head of the National Christian Council and Anglican Bishop The Rt. Reverend Kenneth Fernando of Colombo.

Both of them signed a document in 1993 condemning “the present campaign for unethical conversions being carried out in the country.”

As a child I have seen hand bills with a large black cross over printed across the Eyes of a Buddha extolling the virtues of God’s word below it, several decades ago in a suburb of Colombo. It caused an uproar then and narrowly escaped from becoming a conflagration.

Preaching the word of God in an effort to convince another to embrace a religion different to what that person already profess is Ethical.

              Everything else is unethical.

Jesus said, “The Truth will make you free”. He also said, “I Am the Way, The Truth and the Life”-Holy Bible
So if someone is convinced of this Truth and wants to become a Disciple of Jesus(convert) of his own free will, there should be no problem.. right?

‘Malawaththa’, ‘Asgiriya’ Mahanayaka’s; ‘Siyamnikaya’, ‘Amarapura nIkaya’ Mahanayake lend me your ears and eyes. Are you all blind? These Buddhist monks are destroying the Buddhist beliefs. 10 years ago I was disgusted when monks in Yellow robes came to Impala Cinema to watch a movies seated with women, standing in queues. Then Priests throwing Rocks at a glass door at a UNP meeting, then rioting in front of PM’s official residence with blood all over, clashing with police. Any demonstration anywhere in the world end up in a riot and baton charged or tear gassed by police. Priest of NO OTHER RELIGIOUS DENOMINATION DO THINGS LIKE THIS. Do something. It is not the President or any other politician that should pass laws to stop these things. IT SHOULD BE DONE BY THE CHIEF MONKS, to protect the dignity of Saffron, Yellow or brown robes.( I am using my given name, but I am a good Buddhist). Who are these monks behaving like monkeys?
Bad enough that they behave like hooligans, trying to remove the Pastor’s right to preach, they have got small children to join this parade. If their was tear gas, baton charge and then a stampede, these children’ s life would be in danger. Also what do these monks teach the children??

Why do people refuse to let their religious systems and rituals evolve over time like all others systems, ideologies and thinking do?

I see all of these religions preach the same ideologies about good and evil, and they all claim to be peaceful and love is the core of their faith system. Yet the rituals, hate concepts, fear mongering and prejudice that defies common logic and sensibilities prevail in everyone of them. Most of them have violent histories, wars, killing and hate. And the developed people of today hold on to these age old concepts and reasons for hate and refuse to allow their respective faith systems to evolve like all the other things about life they so willingly change.

Please share your thoughts? Why don’t we allow our religious systems and rituals to shift as well and develop/evolve to suit the modern man and thinking?

wonder why these half naked men(goons in robes) are given a free hand.. They need to be taken to task before it is way too late…. What the heck are the police doing? are these Police officers this inefficient? Why selective treatment? where are the riot squad? with shields and plastic ammo and water cannon?

Soon there will come a time the congregation Christian/Muslim..etc will have ARMS stored and use them to claim ” SELF DEFENSE” because the POLICE force is inefficient and teach these robed goons a lesson never to forget.

You want war, we can give that, but can you handle repurcussions? I dont think so…

If anyone is concerned about “unethical conversions”, it must be dealt with according to the country’s laws. These mobs have taken the law to their hands. They have vandalized a place of worship, and should be prosecuted according to law. That is what would happen in a civilized country. It will not happen in our country because it is a primitive country, run according to tribal customs.

      Dear Ruwan Jayamanne ,

You say “If anyone is concerned about “unethical conversions”, it must be dealt with according to the country’s laws”

Unfortunately the Law has been found wanting. The concerned include the mainstream Christians. Hence other than the conversion Zealots (a fraction of 1% of the population) everybody else is concerned. Are you not concerned of these “unethical conversions” that is triggering Religious hatred?

You say “These mobs have taken the law to their hands. They have vandalized a place of worship, and should be prosecuted according to law”

The call from the beginning was for the swift dispensation of Justice and the harshest punishment possible under the Law, so why raise it?

Are you involved in Unethical Conversions? Is that why you are unconcerned about the adverse impact on society?

    @OTC applause !!!!!!

well you said it all , ,,, God created all equal – it is people like you who openly admit that you follow a belief that is not required to be answerable to anyone or take responsibility for any actions no wonder there is so much corruptions and injustice been brought upon the society by people like you who do lips service of retribution to , but never bother take upon the responsibility towards serving the needy , the sick , homeless etc.

You accuse me of being blind to what you have posted , what you have basically done is copy paste a crap by someone else opinion and further you have accused me of being arrogant, all what I tried to say was with all the money the Arabs have if their ulterior motive was to convert they could have done so easily ,by starting with the poorest and I am not praising them , I am aware of how they waste money , yes they do ,but they will not use it to add numbers to their faith , you seem all heated up it is like that, when you rage with anger and prejudice , whatever the side of the coin is tossed you win, finally what I had summed up in my comments was one-thing not to blindly believe and be quick to copy and past whatever crap someone post on just because it justifies your attitude towards a situation , and am not afraid of your damn threats on my faith ,it is you who need to be damned embarrassed with the way some of you people are behaving .

@OTC -You said “Money can buy souls today” That was an indication that you value money more than anything else because money brings with it power. But here on CT Rich or Poor all stand equal.
    ==============
Is this what my comment meant? why are you twisting and taking it out of context,, ? did I ever say rich is above the poor on CT ? Did I in anyways Indicate that I value money more? what nonsense are you trying to prove ? anyways I wont waste time on this, people who have read my past comments know that i have always advocated to humanitarian services , reaching out without favoring any particular community and also I have always stood firm in justice when any religion has been insulted ,even i have spoken in support of atheist who offer humanitarian services. Besides I did never meant to belittle you or your religion, it was an obvious example I laid out ,what I see here is that you conveniently took that as offensive to justify an excuse to slur insults on my faith by threatening to do so, what most people who claim to not believe in God feel by saying so is that they feel safe and free to insult everyone else who does , but what they fail to realize is that even the atheist have their own God ,their god may not necessarily be the same as the the others but definitely they too have something they idolize, meantime it is not the religion , the belief or founders ,it is the behavior of the some of the followers that is always the concern , to think that people who say they do not believe in God are extremely good is a myth, in fact there are some of them who do more harm to humanity at large than any other group .
    ================================
I don’t believe what you said about God providing the materials that you said He did because I see the poor, the Rich, the destitute, the Homeless, the sick, the healthy, the beautiful and the ugly all around me. God did not create these poor souls as equals
    =======
I don’t believe what you said about God – this is your opinion and you are very well entitled to it as much as I am entitled to mine,,
    ======
When I say god provides and if you are thinking of Santa dropping stuff from the skies am sorry that is what you have conceived, to me when i say God has provided equally to all ,I am talking about the abundance of resources on earth , and if it is properly distrusted there will not be any poor , and illness is also again man is the cause for it not God ,it is Mans ignorance and rebellious actions that has caused so much damage to the environment and humanity .

What you may see as unethical to the Christians may be ethical to them ,as for them according to their belief it is their duty to take care of the neglected and make them a part of their family, and according to what you believe as ethical to ignore the sick , the hungry and homeless as karma may seem unethical to them ,I am restating the something again ,which I have always done many times at many occasions on this Journal , if at all you must do something, then serve your own people in need so that they will not have to reach out to others , do not think it is the Buddhist alone who are converting to Christianity due to their desperation it is the same situation with Hindus and Muslims , and they too keep complaining and accusing the Christians, it is a cheap way out , nobody wants to help their own and when the opposite camp is being realistic and addressing the real problem in hand which in turn is attracting the people concerned to seek permanent shelter in the opposite camp instead of winning them back or keeping whoever is still around by addressing their needs what do you do?
Make accusations , slur insults , threaten ,attack and what not. ..
Please it is time to stop blaming others this goes to Buddhists,Hindus and Muslims too , start walking your talk ..

BTW when I said The Christian God gives them exactly what they need ,it was figure of speech ,am quiet taken aback with your superlative style of langue which I humble myself of being no match to have taken almost a lot of of what I have tried to express so very literally ..and even going as far as possible to twist and turn my contents and even put words that I never mentioned.
leave it out OTS or whatever it may mean ,, if that will make you feel championed over me .
Like I said it would be utterly a waste to carry on the subject concerned with someone who says my mind has been made up- tragic, very tragic ,, head or tales you win so what.
    cheers..

@Off the Cuff -More confusion ,there is no such thing as Muhammadan or Muhammadanism-

Muhammad ,was a Muslim same as Abraham (a Monotheist Believer) the Religion he practiced and preached was Islam (willing submission “ei” to be God’s vicegerent serving all his creations on earth )

Attention :Muslims – We must form a group ,by selecting able young Muslim men & women educated and with a broad horizon, and educate our community by going house to house how and whom they must Vote for in future ,it does not have to be a Muslim MP, they have failed us, why not consider a sinhalese MP,? why not? There are Gentleman Like Hon>Dilan Perera ,Hon.Dr.Sarath Amunugama, & on the opposition there is Hon. Anura Dissanayake, — we must think Sri Lankan in future , our needs are much easy for a sincere Politician to help us with ,which all our Muslim politicians who had the power and could have done , did sweet nothing , if you continue to vote for Muslim congress and allow buffoons like faizer Mustafa to enter parliament , remember my words today it would be suicide , the only Politicians I still have some hope and respect among the Muslim are Hon.Fowzie(but he has done his part as much as he can & Chandrika was nasty did not give him enough leverage to work freely unlike her mother ,)the others are Azath Sally.,kabeer Hasheem & Imthiaz Bakeer Markar ,only If they are willing to Join the winning side , we can not live in dreams … Think about it , but come what may ,please if you have any wisdom left in you and if you really care for the future of our children make sure you end the political grip of the Cursed party and its leader Rauf hakeem and under no circumstance I plead in allah’s name ever allow The Buffoon faizer mustafa an idiot and an arrogant ungrateful fool to ever enter parliament, how can you trust him who had no gratitude to his own people or village and has no idea of even offering simple muslim prayers ? he is a misfit … Muslims must also let go UNP it is a dead duck,,

We must kick the yakos on their bloody backs once and for all &bring in people who will sincerely address our distress, make sure the priority is given to the North & east refugees still stuck in camps and the once resettled and not settled at all , they have no water, no proper sanitation for the women folk , no income , they are suffering you should take a trip down and see for yourself , there is a good for nothing Politician in mannar from rauf hakeem’s party enjoying life while people in his area are suffering.
