Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, during a UPFA election rally in Akuressa, moved angrily towards a party supporter, as if he was going to attack the man.
Rajapaksa’s behaviour was captured on a video and posted by a person who was present at the rally.
Rajapaksa reacted angrily when a supporter, who came close to him, pulled his hand before the former President got on to the stage.
The former President was taken away by his body guards and other UPFA members who surrounded him.
Rakapaka then got on to the stage, showed his respect to the Buddhist monks and waved his hands at supporters as if nothing happened.

I actually want to thank CT for publishing this video thereby giving us – Mahinda loyalists – a good platform to voice the TRUE STORY of the video. The Sinhala caption was entirely wrong.
I first saw the video on CT. I visit only 1 or 2 selected websites and also a few newspapers only. Therefore the opportunity I received in CT was really great.
As many people now know, Mahinda didn’t actually try to attack anybody, he only defended himself from the ruffian who pulled his hand aggressively and twisted. Self defence is accepted any where in the world.
The incident was well planned with several cameras, otherwise nobody will be able to capture the incident so precisely.
Fortunately Mahinda promptly reacted and defended himself thereby avoided any embarrassment planned by the culprits.

It’s going a bit far when the posting and suggestive headline provokes comments inciting people to murder Rajapaksa by shooting or strangling him as CT’s commentator “Edward Snowden Assange” did, until I protested about it. If Rajapaksa is assassinated we’ll know who to hold responsible for spreading such ideas.

That is an utter lie. Mahinda was not given even 1/3 of the security facilities entitled for a former President. His security detail can’t walk, they should be given proper transportation and lodgings. He was not even given his official residence or an office in Colombo, for nearly 7 months now.

President Mahinda proved in Akuressa as we saw in the video that, if the need arises he is capable of defending himself without waiting for his security. That is a relief. He proved again that he is physically, mentally and politically very strong. If this happened to someone like Ranil, he would definitely rush home cancelling the rally.
Obviously the incident was pre-planned by someone, because it is not normal at a public rally, anybody pulling President Mahinda’s hand in such intensity, twisting and not releasing. MR was attacked, he reacted promptly and defended himself. That is the story. Ranil, I don’t think stoop to such a cheap level, they should be Mangala’s boorish dogs.

Actually national leaders do not wait until others (including their security guards) come and protect them.
A good case in point is that of Jean Chretien who was Canada’s prime minister for 3 times. On Feb 15, 1996, most Canadians watched replays over and over on national TV news showing Prime Minister Chretien stride thro’ a crowd of people, reach out toward a man, grab him by the throat and pushed him to the ground. The man,Bill Clennett suffered injuries and lost a tooth due to the fall and Prime minister was charged with assault.
Prime Minister Chretien said he had to act in self defense (since the Quebec separatist were ‘targeting’ him at the time). For the readers’ understanding it should be noted that Quebec is a French speaking province that has been trying to separate from Canada for the last few decades. Prime Minister Chretien who is a French himself from Quebec was against the separatist movement and defeated it by passing necessary acts in parliament (and also by other political tactics).
The majority of Canadians defended Chretien’s act and supported him during TV shows that debated if Prime Minister were to be charged with criminal assault. At the end, Quebec Justice Minister Paul Begin announced at a news conference that he would not let the case proceed. Just like President Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Jean Chretien of Canada was a lawyer, tough decision maker, a fighter against separatism, and a very popular leader!
