Why Maithripala Sirisena Hates Sarath Foneska

By Vishwamithra

“Do not be afraid; our fate cannot be taken from us; it is a gift.” ~Dante Alighieri

Presidency goes a way beyond the holder’s personal likes and dislikes. It goes beyond the holder’s fears and pleasures; its scope is so large and extending beyond the personal boundaries of one’s lamentable limitations, a not-so-sophisticated intellect (if he has any) fails to embrace the immense responsibilities and demands that are rested upon the office. As this writer has enunciated in his previous columns, the fundamental function of the leader of the country is to protect and defend its people. However clever he thinks he is, when the weight of office falls on him with immeasurable intensity, if he is not ready or equipped to understand the nuanced attributes of the demands that he is expected to confront and respond with poise and stoicism, he will be judged by history, first as a miserable failure and then even as a traitor to the office he was elected to.

Fonseka

Politicians, unlike those bureaucrats who are appointed to execute the policies and programs spelt out and prepared by them, more often than not, tend to take the easy way out when the going gets rough and tough. Politicians by the very fact of impermanency of their being in power, especially in a democratic republic, usually resort to clever messaging of the facts; their rhetorical insinuations overtake the plain and simple expression of the status quo as related to innumerable crises his country faces on a daily basis; their immediate attention is to the sustenance of their power and in order to solidify that power, they apply all the skills they have accumulated over the years; whether they are intellectually matched with the complex tasks that lie ahead, they have proven to be perfectly matched in the deceptive techniques of this enterprise called politics.

When such despicable characters seek high office in the country, and when they are elected on the strength of the campaign and unusually electric rhetoric they used during those campaigns, an inscrutable phenomenon enters their minds; that inscrutable phenomenon begins to not only shape and define their activities that follow, it acts as a shield and armor against numerous attacks hurled at them by their opponents. Nevertheless, the path that these half-baked politicians choose to trek offers more rugged terrain than rosy meadows. The natural obedience to greed and lust becomes a second part of their very DNA and at the expense of the people who elected them to office, they begin a macabre game of indulgence and luxurious living styles that sometimes belittle those spent by old-rich millionaires and billionaires.

This, in short, is what has happened to our current Executive President. After being elected by the overwhelming majority of United National Party (UNP) supporters and the Tamils and Muslims, this half-baked politician has chosen to brandish his power in the most unethical and immoral fashion; he chose to betray his supporters and go to bed with his mortal enemies, so to speak.

Yet when the name of real war hero, Sarath Fonseka came up for the post of Field Marshall, he did not hesitate to decorate Fonseka with this rare distinction. He saw it fit to make such a magnanimous gesture at the time. But unfortunately for Sri Lanka and her people who were trying to raise their heads above water after a brutal 30-year war, tragedy struck again. On Easter Sunday of 2019, April 21, a well-coordinated and superbly organized terror attack was hurled at the 3 Christian/Catholic churches and three 5-Star hotels, namely, Shangri-La, Kingsbury and Cinnamon Grand, and killed more than 300 men, women and children and injured more than 700, the Executive President was on furlough in Singapore with his family. His fake patriotism and love for the people of his motherland came apart at its seams.

When it was revealed that the Executive was informed of an impending attack of the nature of the Easter Sunday Massacre, the people saw through this man’s utter inadequacy for the job he holds. Usually at moments of crisis, most political leaders own responsibility and pledge to go forward from then and there on. Passing the buck is not usually ascribed to great men. Maithripala Sirisena is not a great man. His deficiencies have been brought to light. What happened is now history. The way forward should be the only focus of leaders of a country. Harboring old grudges is petty and belittling to the office they hold.

Sirisena, you cannot handle the job of national security. You cannot be trusted with the defence apparatus and its sophisticated demands. Standing up and bowing their heads to you is not attributed to you personally; national security professionals do that for the office you hold. Misreading such bureaucratic obedience is a national crisis. Please do not try to hide behind the constitutional clauses and hold on to the Ministry of Defence. You still can be the Minister of Defence but hand over national security to an elected politician who has proven beyond any shadow of doubt or reservation, who can account for the defence and protection of our people.

Sarath Fonseka is a much maligned man. His bravery and undiluted courage was once the source of irritation and mistrust by another regime which was headed by three brothers. The first among them was the President, another was charged with the economy and the other who fled the army he once served in and was in hiding in another greener pasture. The brothers gathered their political and financial capital thanks to their other brother’s Presidency. Credited with almost three fourths (75%) of the national budget, these brothers are alleged to have ransacked the country’s coffers to their will and whims. The guy who is being promoted for Presidency in 2020, got one of his cronies to write a book and attribute the success of the war effort to his own name (..ta’s War). These empty vessels began their symphony of self-aggrandizements soon after the guns fell silent in the North and East.

Plutarch, named, upon becoming a Roman citizen, Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus, was a Greek biographer and essayist, known primarily for his Parallel Lives and Moralia, who is classified as a Middle Platonist said: “The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled”. The empty vessels, that were the Rajapaksa brothers, did not understand the nuanced ways of thinking nor could they relate or empathise with the ordinary shades of life and its idiosyncratic elements. Instead of kindling their emptiness with wisdom and acumen, they opted for the alluring magic of material luxury and ego-enhancing flattery. But the horrendous felonies and misdeeds they are alleged to have committed are now pursuing them like a hyena in scavenging search of easy prey.

While the Executive is being charged, rightly or wrongly, with negligence of duty, Sarath Fonseka chose to wait in the shadows, but no more. Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka could not wait any longer. His remarks in the House of Parliament in the wake of the Easter Sunday Massacre, revealed the very character and traits of a fighter; of a man who knows what national security is, what it demands of those who are held responsible to protect and defend the land and her people.

It is being speculated that Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is responsible for the Easter Sunday Massacre. ISIS is a very sophisticated terror organisation, perhaps second only to or on par with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE). Who else is more qualified and equipped to confront ISIS than Sarath Fonseka, the one who destroyed Prabhakaran and his murderous organisation named LTTE. But Maithripala Sirisena does not see it that way. His anger, jealousy and pettiness have clouded his judgment;

The Law and Order Ministry is a double-edged knife; that is how Sirisena perceives it. Fonseka will man that job and destroy not only all forces that try to destroy our lives, he might go after the Rajapaksas with the same commitment to democracy and rule of law and expose them, once and for all. The alleged pressure on Sirisena sourcing from the Rajapaksas might be unbearable for Sirisena. The man who beat and brought Prabhakaran to his knees, is being held in limbo because he can do the job. But, it seems, placing the country before petty and inconsequential likes and dislike is a hard choice for our Executive. It is indeed a tragedy beyond Shakespearian genre. One wonders whether holding Sarath Fonseka away from the job of Law and Order is part of a deal that involves nomination from the Pohottuwa. That would be even a more unspeakable tragedy.

      Be realistic!

We didn’t appoint Sirisena for any of the reasons you have mentioned. That’s not how things work in SL.

Primary reason for Sirisena’s ascendancy to the presidency was to get rid of the Rajapakse family junta/dynasty.

In SL it’s one thing at a time.

To expect any Lankan to do any of the things that is now expected of Sirisena is our own folly/irrationality/lunacy ……… being blind to the true nature/essence of Lankans.

Don’t we know ourselves? Look around, observe ………. how Lankans behave.

To get rid of Sirisena we have to appoint another one-trick pony ……. then to get rid of him/her another one-trick pony ………. and another, and another …………. and another

Then, like our parents, we die ……….. and our children take over …….. then they die ……… the cycle continues; the traits never change.

For better or for worse ………. Lankans will always be Lankan.

BTW Did any of you guys expect the Zimbabweans to change their traits with the demise of Mugabe?

Mahinda is playing a very quintessential Lankan-game ……… and Ranil in opposition to him is playing a very quintessential Lankan-game ………..

Didn’t any of ye guys notice that’s our essence?

Gotta fall back on science to examine our genes/inner-traits ………. “Humanities” are grossly inadequate. ……… If they were, Dayan would’ve been able to secure a job on his own merits!

Nimal Fernando is correct on how MY 3 came to power but he is mistaken on Ranil. Ranil’s problem is his lack of charisma but people who didn’t trust him has changed their minds now. It was this misplaced mistrust that pave the way for an untested character on national political stage (MY 3) in 2015. Also about voters, I don’t believe that it is only a SL phenomenon. If so, how did Trump came to power?

        • 8
          0

“Ranil’s problem is his lack of charisma”

He lacks charisma because he has substituted gutless-sliminess in it’s place. Ranil’s problem is he is protecting the crooks …… and tried to cover up the “bond-scam.” He tries to be a gentleman crook! He is a quintessential Lankan; no different from others in-spite of the western-attire.

“Also about voters, I don’t believe that it is only a SL phenomenon. “

True to some extent ……… Americans are not much different from Lankans when it comes to politics ……….. but that’s cushioned because their society is advanced in many other areas ……… look at the level of research in their universities ……

“If so, how did Trump came to power?”

Trump didn’t win the popular vote ……. lost it by 3 million. ……… but Trump is not all that bad ……… he is doing somethings that needed to be done and others didn’t have the guts to do ………. i.e. China’s intellectual-property theft and forced technological-transfers.

While our people ……… Mahinda builds crap all over Hambanthota with high interest Chinese loans just to stick his name on ………. and Ranil sells them to the Chinese and to counter balance invites the Indians to take over the Mattala airport! The next battle between China and India will take place on Lankan soil.

Then Mahinda has his supporters and Ranil has his …………….. who think they are the best thing since Einstein.

And I’m writing while flying in a plane trying to knock some sense here.

Just for the sake of the country and its people please choose a President and a Primeminister for the world at large too.
These 2 leaders of the country should be able to communicate intelligently in the inland as well as outside this land too.
We don’t want any more nincompoops who have no balls nor mouth to steer this country away from this present mentality . Let alone having brains.
Please think of our county and choose not the village rowdies.
The names mentioned up to now are Useless buggers.
Our country is with educated people , choose with proper education.
Not Chandyas to fight at every street corners.
Sick and tired of these names of the so called nominees.

Whether he is talking on behalf of a political party leader or not, SF has proven his skills in defending SL against a separatist outfit that used terror in addition to military maneuvers. Sirisena has had no such record and it is therefore quite possible that he fears SF in powerful positions and therefore keeps him away from power..it is also abundantly clear that SL leaders don’t care about the citizens of the country but only themselves, a stark feature of a very immature political culture..

      5

      Lasantha Pethiyagoda,
I agree with you that SL leaders don’t care about the citizens of the country or security of the nation but only themselves and and their family and how they can make money and wealth out of this power. There is no secret that Sarath Fonseka is a good military leader but no one can claim that the victory over LTTE is theirs. There are so many factors and so many countries contributed to the victory which includes India, China, USA, Karuna, KP. In otherwords so many factors and countries worked together against LTTE. All these factors together weakened LTTE’s military power and they did not find any route to recover from their weakness after the peace talk from 2001-2006. It is not the bravery of Srilanka military alone got this victory. The country failed continuously after 2009 to bring the peace and stability in this country due to the fact that our leaders selfishness.

Candidates who are nominated or awaits to be nominated as President or PM of Srilanka needs the credentials to be the leader of this very complicated multinational nation who need to be able address the grievenses of the minorities and the majorities. Those who comes with fake promises are failed statesmen/ women who only takes up the position for their own selfishness.
Haven’t we learnt even after 70 plus years of gradual annihilation of this beautiful country??

LAsantha PEthiagoda: Sri lankan parliament is full of lies and turncoats and turnovers. Army commander Sarath Fonseka is not the same present Politician Sarath fonseka. H”e wants some confrontation with the PResident. Besides, he is being highly brain washed.

Exactly the Same way President left, Ranil was in Nuwaraeliya during that. Ranil for onetime was preparing to become the GUAIDO of Venezuela. He tried it even after the dumb homicide bomber attack. SAHARAN HASHIM was the leader. Who in the world one feeling like a Leader go and blow up first. He git free money by which he built everything, bought expensive cars, then blew up because the handler made him scared. Asking Hand over the LAw and order ministry for SF is another SCAM.

        Emil van der Poorten,

it is crystal clear – this JD moron is the product of ‘swabhasha’ education our great SWRD (of Oxford fame) created to keep the intellectually challenged masses of Sri Lanka (like JD) subservient to the ruling class of the Horogolla dynasty!

perhaps its time for you to learn the English that other sri lankans use! “only in SL syndrome” if few sentences are out of wack, this need to persecute. its only the 2nd language in SL after all

I think, the Foreign handler of Sri lanka wants Sarath Fonseka for some CAtpaw work and Sarath Fonseka my children are there because of that I am doing it.

It is a simple answer. President Sirisena is fearing his former boss. Therefore he had to sing “Yes Sir! Yes Sir! Three bags full……..” otherwise he will be canned left and right. “Peechang Bayai”.

Oh man! Our two legs swains wouldn’t appreciate, or let our best proven and well experienced talents to contribute to the good of the country and it’s people. MCC and the Lords have given the best and pride of place to Sangakkara, and definitely they would get the best of him for their good. Since. I left the country in 1974, all over the world, met thousands of our fellow countrymen, who are on top of the world and doing immense contributions, in many fields, to their adopted second homes. If these swains put their talents, experience and wealth to good use of the motherland, by now we would be on top of everything. Where we would get one like him, SF is a proven man who eliminated one of deadliest terror outfits in the world. This is the high time for the country badly in need of his services but the two legged swains least keen about it, and by that sending the country to the gutters.

Both Sirisena and Gonseka are crooks. Gonseka was happy to support Sirisena to get rid of Rajapakse and acquire status as Field Marshall though he is not qualified. Blame game should stop at politics and those who brought this Gonseka to the frontline via national list just to bark when needed not to forget that Gonseka was punished for stealing $$$ from Army procurement. Some of you guys doesn’t even know what exactly Gonseka stole but create unchewable stories.

    Dear Vishwamithra,

Let me just highlight two things in your article:

    1. Either you are trying to Sound Smart y using upper order English terms that is not commonly decrypted by the average English speaking person

    2. Or you are attempting manipulating People with the aim to aim to advance one ideology or another.

Either way, your articles are not understood by the average reader, thus you are wasting your time in attempting to convince your “so called”readers of your ideologies.

Thus, be aware of your inability to reach the public with your so called “high-end” writings, and do make an attempt to make your articles more palatable to the avg reader.

Mr. President, if you have any love or feeling left within that harden heart of yours, I begg ( behalf of most Srilankans) please hand over the Law & Order Ministry to Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka. Can’t you see Mr. President, there is no better person to head this ministry at this point of time where our beloved mother land is facing tremendous danger from extremists groups. Please forget about all personal agendas and do what is right by the people of this country – that is why you were elected to this high office. People will forgive you for all the atrocious things you have done if you just give Field Marshall the post he most deserves.

But I got to tell you, I will still bad mouth the Tamils if I have to. And I have been warning the Sinhalese of the upcoming Muslim invasion that culminated on the 21st April 2019 right here in this forum.

Will Vishwamithra agree that the world over politicians hate each other including within their own party?
This is chronic in SL. For example do the Rajapaksa family love each other? Or the other parties?
It is wrong to choose the title “Why Maithripala Sirisena Hates Sarath Foneska”. SF hates MS!
    .
Difficult to find out what Vishwamitra is saying but it is clear he hates certain politicians.
Of course prejudiced journalists hate each other.
    .
Vishwamitra yet again plays ‘How the civil war was won’. Did successive GoSL create it?
It took combined effort of several countries to ‘win’ it.

If some one listened to what SF was talking about the terrorist attack, President not recruiting or taking advice from him, new national Security legislation, he talked very much like a CIA agent. I think New national security legislation is very important if Sri lankan wants to earn extra cash from extraordinary rendition of muslims and validating human rights of sri lankan terrorists.

SF is a very good army general. But Ltte was not destroyed not because of his army leadership. It was the political leadership. Who made SF as army commander.

Whats all this hype about SF. Lets not forget the fact SF along with the rest of the other two service leaders finished the war. For SF and the other commanders at the time.. MR gave the green light for flushing the terrorist off which no other government took the challenge as their mindset was well glued to the concept that the LTTE cannot we eradicated.
Hence stop blaming MR and his three brothers and his government it was purely because of his strong leadership qualities and someone with a backbone that got our forces won the war.
SF did not win the war by himself it was with the backing of the Navy (Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda) , Air Force ( Marshall Roshan Gunatilleke) the Police & STF and the various security apparatus together battled it out to eradicate the 30 year menace.

“When such despicable characters seek high office in the country, and when they are elected on the strength of the campaign and unusually electric rhetoric they used during those campaigns, an inscrutable phenomenon enters their minds;…..”
Whom are you trying to fool Mr Vishvamitra? Say
“When such despicable characters ARE CHOSEN for high office in the country, and when they are elected on the strength of OUR campaign and unusually electric rhetoric WE used during those campaigns, an inscrutable phenomenon enters their minds …” Allow me to reproduce a recent comment of mine below another write up:
“I find it hard to contain my anger over those who brought this mad ass to power. Those who fooled 6.2 million voters with most virulent propaganda that he was Jesus Christ/Diyasena Kumaraya/Personification of ‘Maitree’ true to his name which is the same as of next Buddha etc. etc. to lead their righteous journey towards ‘Yahapalana’ a term coined with the most malicious intention of fooling the masses (remember how Dharmista Samajaya came to an end?). Those in the know, particularly Ranil Wickramasinghe, knew well of his phycological profile. He needed a , unprincipled, lowly , meek man on president’s chair so that he can carry over his machinations unhindered. (Remember how he got SB Dissanayake-another stinking scoundrel to cross over and breakup Chandrika government?)
Now everyone has distanced himself from the lunatic and pretending to have been fooled with no shame. To be fooled by a nincompoop like Sirisena – my foot?
This is a crooked game gone awry. Things didn’t work out exactly according to their plan resulting in the dire situation we are in.
Now IF the split between Wickramasinghe and Sirisena was the cause of the security lapse that is no minor matter. Who should bear the responsibility or take the blame for this catastrophe – the lunatic himself or those who brought a lunatic to power?
