“We are not sure exactly why, but cricket is like a religion here.” the US Embassy Colombo informed Washington.
The Colombo Telegraph found the leaked cable from the WikiLeak database. The cable is classified as “CONFIDENTIAL” and written on September 13, 2002 by the Charge D’Affaires W. Lewis Amselem.
Under the subheading “BIG CRICKET TOURNAMENT” Amselem wrote “Just want to flag that there is a huge cricket tournament taking place in Colombo that began yesterday and will go on for the next ten days. (Note: We are not sure exactly why, but cricket is like a religion here.) All the world’s best teams are in town (Australia, India, South Africa, etc.). Sri Lanka clobbered Pakistan last night. The fact that such a big tourney is taking place in SL is being taken by many Sri Lankans as another sign that their isolation and self-marginalization because of the war is gradually abating.”
In another cable he wrote; “The fact that a major cricket tournament is taking place in Sri Lanka at all is a pleasant surprise to many here. Sri Lankans had grown used to their cricket-mad country being overlooked as a host for major events because of the conflict and the danger of terrorism.”

Now what is the news value of this rubbish? Every country has its own cravings for sport and baseball, Football and basket ball is what the Americans are mad over. This is an absolute wastage of space. I can imagine the standard of your editor.
There is water when it rains? Yes we all no that.

Ha ha Raymond hold your tongue!Still unable to forget that unfortunate little incident which took place at Nandikadal? Now that every Johnny is talking about reconciliation,i have got a great idea! Why don’t we organize a cricket match between the “Samanera’s and the Catholic clergy? We could call it the reconciliation cup.But warning! Make sure that these Catholic sons of god, doesn’t roam around near the “Samanera’s”dressing room!Seeing the young Samenera’s only with their ball guards on,these pure sons of god will even forget that they are being watched by god himself. No monkey business,eh!No off the field cricket.

Hey Max, This is good news. US spy on every dog and cat in our country for a reason. Yes cricket is a religion supported by our government for a reason. We everybody used to carry a ball or a bat once unless if you are a[Edited out] or retard. But what about our government workers spend time on cricket , reading horse Race papers or gossiping like Magi akkas on their working hours? How much time they waste every year because the total system is miss managed? Who to blame? We as a solid nation with great up bringing by Buddhism still lack of few good virtual due to past scenarios we ran into. We the old Sri lankans are simple people with a simple living. Then we were intraduse to every crap. We used to live with perfect harmany with our neighbours and love for peace and the temple activities. That is long gone and people are divided from the temple. Culture is raped with influences including cricket. Why only cricket? why only cricket?

C’mon, just let kids be kids and so what if they come in the paper… it shows that in Sri Lanka, kids are allowed to be kids… good on them! Life is to be lived.. so enjoy – we can take a lesson from them and live life for the moment and enjoy while it lasts… by the way, the tri-nation cricket is great these days in Australia. Sri Lanka doing a great job! Go the lions….
