Wimal Weerawansa’s wife has been taken into custody this evening under charges of possessing a forged diplomatic passport.

Weerawansa’s wife popularly known as Shashi, had been taken into custody at a private hospital located in Malabe this evening at about 7 pm. She has been identified as Ranasinghe Randunu Mudiyanselage Sirja Udayanathi but also goes by the name Shehasa Udayanthi.
She was asked to report to the CID on February 19 but had not appeared and former Minister Weerawansa said it was due to a sudden illness and that the CID has been informed of her inability to attend the inquiry. He had also said his wife’s arrest has been plotted to tarnish his image.

There is a bigger story to the passport issue. The reason she changed her date of birth is because her sister escaped to the UK and sought asylum using Shashi’s first passport. That is the reason for name and date change . First the UK authorities should be provided with this information, track her down and bring her back to Sri Lanka as evidence. This will keep our nym…. There were media reports about the forged passports for some reason or the other CID was not taking her in for questioning. Then on the 18th Nugegoda meeting he challenges the govt and says she has not been taken in. I had the impression he was waiting to welcome the CID with a broomstick or something by the way he spoke.
