Controversial Buddhist Monk Galagoda Atte Gnanasara of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) has declared that if he and his group had a ‘little’ political backing then they can end the rise of the Muslims in the country.
Speaking at an event recently in Korea where he addressed the Sri Lankans living there, Gnanasara also revealed how he systematically devised a successful plan to virtually destroy and abandon a Muslim town in Kuliyapitiya. “Sometimes, I feel like taking a T-56 and do what Prabhakaran did, but I can’t do it because I am in robes,” he said.
“We have more than 6000 to 7000 of our women who have converted to Islam after marrying Muslims. When we marry a Tamil or someone else we don’t get them to change their names, but when a Muslim fellow marries one of our women, then she is forced to become a Fathima and all the babies become Mohammeds. We must stop this,” he said.
Gnanasara said that this was a dangerous trend. “Our politicians are only greedy for power, they are ready to sacrifice for the party but not ready to do anything for the country. If these politicians only gave us a little backing we can end the rise of the Muslims,” he said.
Speaking further he said that there was a Muslim town which was located amongst Sinhalese villages. “But we systematically devised a plan over a year and today it is infested only with flies, no one else goes there,” a laughing Gnanasara said.
Elaborating further he said that the Muslim town was well off because the people in the town had money and they tried to take ownership of a playground in the area. “From the Sinhala village, a few old ladies had gone to sell their vegetable crop to a Muslim Mudalali in the town, but the Muslim Mudalali refused to buy saying that because they were not given the playground, the mosque had ordered them not to buy anything from the Sinhalese. These old women threw the vegetables onto the floor and then they and the others got together and started their offensive,” he said.
According to Gnanasara, today the Muslim town is absolutely abandoned. “There are now about 6 to 7 new shops owned by Sinhalese and the Muslim town is only infested with flies,” a very pleased Gnanasara said.

I am not in favour of his strategies.The Thero has always been spewing forth vindictive speech and acts against all minorities. After all this is a multi racial, multi religious and multi ethnic country, and has been so for centuries.
But the minorities must also do their bit by learning to live in harmony with the majority. It is ONLY when they try to act in contradiction to such a principles (living in harmony with all) and endeavour to usurp the status quo that radicals like this Thero speak venom. Odd balls will scream and shout but as long as it is contained there is no harm done, and cannot be helped.
Having said that, there is also a role for the majority to play in that they must not”throw their weight” around and antagonize the minority, provoking them to undrest.
The GOVT and the Law enforcement authorities also have a duty by the whole population to ensure that there is peace and tranquility in the Country and NOT be biased in their enforcement. A tough call ,but that is the requirement.

But what do we do when a Buddhist girl decides to convert to Islam, and she decides to take the risk of alienating her family and friends, out of her own free will. It becomes the duty of all Muslim brothers and sisters to get involved to make them feel welcome, as they are now one of us. They will provide support and assistance to them until they can cope with their new situation. After converting if they find themselves over burdened by practice of Islam, they are free to return back to whichever religion they converted from. The freedom of choice in religion must be fair to all, and that right be guaranteed in the Constitution. It can also work the other way as well. If the religious practices are of benefit to the adherents, why should it bother Gnanasara nor anyone else? This is clearly his game of playing into the monk hegemony.

When it comes to interfaith marriage in Islam, particularly in regards to Marriage of Muslim men to non-Muslim women.
Islamic marriage rules between Muslim men and non-Muslim women are regulated by Islamic principles. There are restrictions to whom a Muslim man can marry. Muslim men are forbidden from marrying polytheist women. A polytheist woman would have to convert to Islam if she would want to get married to a Muslim man, according to Islamic principles.

Muslim women are forbidden from marrying non-Muslim men according to Islamic law. All major groups of Muslims have forbidden Muslim women from marrying non-Muslim men. According to some, this prohibition serves to preserve the Islamic faith from dilution and expand it, within societies which are patriarchal but multi-faith. It effectively ensures that over many generations, providing that the society is patrilineal, Islam would naturally gain in adherents relative to other co-existing religions, through its ability to secure the adherence of all offspring from mixed marriages. In effect, all children of any mixed-marriages involving Muslims are guaranteed to be raised as Muslim. This systemic method of expanding the Muslim community in any multi-religious society is assisted by the ability for Muslim men to marry more than one non-Muslim wife (a possibility usually not available to non-Muslim men) and therefore secure all of their offspring for the Islamic faith – provided that the society acknowledges a patrilineal religious system in which only the father’s religion is passed down. There also exists a minority view that does permit women who have converted to Islam to remain with non-Muslim spouses as an exception to the general rule. This minority view is however restricted to converted women only.
Conversion to Islam of one spouse in a non-Muslim marriage. Under Islamic law, if a non-Muslim woman is married to a non-Muslim, and she converts to Islam, the marriage is suspended until her husband converts to Islam. She could, in theory, leave the non-Muslim husband and marry a Muslim one. If the non-Muslim husband does convert a new marriage is not needed.
In the Quran, it is said,
O ye who believe! When there come to you believing women refugees, examine (and test) them: Allah knows best as to their Faith: if ye ascertain that they are Believers, then send them not back to the Unbelievers. They are not lawful (wives) for the Unbelievers, nor are the (Unbelievers) lawful (husbands) for them. But pay the Unbelievers what they have spent (on their dower), and there will be no blame on you if ye marry them on payment of their dower to them. But hold not to the guardianship of unbelieving women: ask for what ye have spent on their dowers, and let the (Unbelievers) ask for what they have spent (on the dowers of women who come over to you). Such is the command of Allah. He judges (with justice) between you. And Allah is Full of Knowledge and Wisdom. {Surah 60:10}
In Modern practice, many Arab countries allowed interfaith marriage to Christian or Jewish women but not to non-Muslim men. In Lebanon for example there is no civil personal status law and marriages are performed according to the religion of the spouses. There, Muslim women cannot marry non-Muslim men, whereas this is possible vice versa, at least if the spouse is a Christian or Jewish woman. Turkey allows marriages to non-Muslim men through secular laws. In Malaysia a non-Muslim must convert to Islam in order to marry a Muslim. The offspring of such unions are automatically Muslims and all Malaysian Muslims are legally prohibited from leaving Islam.
Interfaith marriage especially between Hindus and Muslims often have been the bone of contention and have resulted in communal riots in India. Love Jihad, also called Romeo Jihad, widely regarded as a conspiracy theory, is an alleged activity under which young Muslim boys and men are said to reportedly target young girls belonging to non-Muslim communities for conversion to Islam by feigning love. Official investigations in Uttar Pradesh had found no credence in allegations of Love Jihad that had been brought before them, with state police chief A.L. Banerjee stating that, “In most cases we found that a Hindu girl and Muslim boy were in love and had married against the will of their parents’.

Gnanasara boasts and pokes fun about a lesson the Sinhala people of Kuliyapitiya taught the Muslim businessman in the area, thru a collective effort to put him him out of business. If what he says is true, he fails to realize that what happened to one man is surely not going to affect a whole community of people. As Muslims, we believe that what we earn is what is allocated to us by God Almighty. Nothing more, nothing less. It is not the end of the world to lose business. Cholan, in your haste to denigrate Islam and Muslims, you always keep missing the point. In all of those instances quoted, you fail to realize that those are acts of individuals and not out of the teachings pertaining to Islam. What has the world got to offer to the matter of rampant alcoholism and drug abuse, whereas Islam insists total abstention from from consuming all forms of addictive and intoxicating substances. Presently, we have major issues with such issues in our own country and around the world. No solution.
Muslim women the world over, sacrifice a lot to adhere to Islamic dress code. Whereas if they want, they can just as easily ignore all of the teachings and dress as they please, to attract mens attention on themselves. What prevents them from going that route?
Why do Muslims abstain from living on interest money. Taking and giving money on interest, both are considered equally bad, and although the temptation and greed for money is always there, their religion comes first before everything else. Now can anyone else emulate that?
I can go on and on expounding on various aspects of life based on Islamic virtues, starting from a Muslims birth until death, their life from the the moment they wake up in the morning until bed time at night. Every intention, every action is guided by principals and teachings of their monotheistic faith, Islam. Whilst here you are trying to discredit certain Muslim individuals, who are not the ideal ambassadors of Islam. I don’t blame them either, as they have been deprived of real and true information.

WHAT JIHAD IS
The Arabic word “jihad” is often translated as “holy war,” but in a purely linguistic sense, the word ” jihad” means struggling or striving, at a personal level.
The correct Arabic word for war is: “al-harb”.
In a religious sense, as described by the Quran and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (sal.), “jihad” has many meanings. It can refer to internal as well as external efforts to be a good Muslims or believer, as well as working to inform or teach people about the true faith of Islam.
If military jihad is required to protect the faith against others, it can be performed using anything from legal, diplomatic and economic to political means. If there is no peaceful alternative, Islam also allows the use of force, but there are strict rules of engagement. Innocents – such as women, children, or invalids – must never be harmed, and any peaceful overtures from the enemy must be accepted.
Military action is therefore only one means of jihad, and is very rare. To highlight this point, the Prophet Mohammed (Sal.) told his followers returning from a military campaign: “This day we have returned from the minor jihad to the major jihad,” which he said meant returning from armed battle to the peaceful battle for self-control and betterment.
In case military action appears necessary, not everyone can declare jihad. The religious military campaign has to be declared by a proper authority, advised by scholars, who say the religion and people are under threat and violence is imperative to defend them. The concept of “just war” is very important.
The concept of jihad has been hijacked by many political and religious groups over the ages in a bid to justify various forms of violence. In most cases, Islamic splinter groups invoked jihad to fight against the established Islamic order. Scholars say this misuse of jihad contradicts Islam.
Examples of sanctioned military jihad include the Muslims’ defensive battles against the Crusaders in medieval times, and before that some responses by Muslims against Byzantine and Persian attacks during the period of the early Islamic conquests.

Jihad is not a violent concept.
Jihad is not a declaration of war against other religions. It is worth noting that the Koran specifically refers to Jews and Christians as “people of the book” who should be protected and respected. All three faiths worship the same God. Allah is just the Arabic word for God, and is used by Christian Arabs as well as Muslims, which collectively (Jews, Christians and Muslims) amounts to more than three quarter of the entire world population, who believe in the existence of God.
Military action in the name of Islam has not been common in the history of Islam. Scholars says most calls for violent jihad are not sanctioned by Islam.
It must also be said that warfare in the name of God is not unique to Islam only. Historians will say, other faiths throughout the world have waged wars with religious justifications.

A good soft-spoken simple selfless dedicated disciplined loving family man who had a strong sense of justice since a young age, who grew up admiring Indian freedom fighters and sacrificed his family for Tamil liberation. Yes you betrayed your fellow Tamil-speaking people for a racist savage regime that didn’t only get rid of VP but also thousand of civilians, nothing to be proud of. There were massacres of Tamil civilians by Muslim home guards which is why LTTE retaliated. LTTE expelled Muslims not only for the safety of Tamils but for their own safety as well. I believe expulsion of Muslims prevented more massacres. Mosque massacre attributed to LTTE by SL Gov was denied by the LTTE who blamed it on the SL Gov as their dirty trick to get support from Muslim countries. Any accusation from the GOSL propaganda machine must be taken with a grain of salt. Tamil leaders have always tried to be inclusive toward Muslims this is why they were careful to use the term ‘Tamil speaking people’ instead of just ethnic Tamils (though I believe most of these so-called moors are descendants of South Indian converts rather than few Arab settlers.) So why couldn’t you live under Tamil Eelam? Their constitution safeguarded religious freedom and equality for all ethnic groups. LTTE wouldn’t have had attacked Muslims if Muslims didn’t collaborate with the genocidal regime of Sinhala Lanka. There were few Muslims among Tamil militant groups in the early days but as a separate Muslim ethnic identity was solidified whether due to efforts by the GOSL as some accuse or Muslim leaders themselves Muslims became antagonistic to the creation of Tamil Eelam.
Since you support military defeat of separatism, do you extend this support to India fighting Muslim separatists in Kashmir as well? What about China fighting Muslim Uyghur separatists? Are Palestinian militants freedom fighters or terrorists that must be eradicated?

Islam is more of a political ideology than religion. If one follows the Quran exactly, it dictates every habit, from what to eat, to what to wear, to how to treat women. The Europeans spread Christianity via colonialism, even though there were no forcible conversions. The primary purpose of European colonialism was to exploit the natural resources of a given region; religion itself was secondary. On the other hand, when Islam conquered regions like Indonesia, North India, Iran, North Africa, and the pagan Middle East, conversion was done by the sword. Muhammed should be respected as a great warrior, not a prophet. Muslims are engaged in so many wars today, why? They are just following Muhammed’s example. Christianity used to be wild and barbaric, it was tamed by the Enlightenment & Protestant Reformation. I am not sure if Islam can be tamed in a similar way, again, given the background of Muhammed. So in some sense, what the monk says is correct. We should guard the Sinhala-Buddhist heritage of the country very carefully. We should not force it on anyone, at the same time, do not let opportunistic politicians sell the country off. There are no Hindus or Jews left in Indonesia, North Africa, and Saudi Arabia, and it took Spain 900 years to kick out the Islamists. The 30 year war that we fought with the LTTE will be peanuts by comparison.

Correct; Indonesia has many Christians and Hindus. Thank you for clarifying. It is similar with Iranians, since they are Shia and they were Zoroastrian originally. There are still 10K Jews in Iran. The issue is only with Sunnis, who are eager for jihad.
