A Daughter Of Sri Lankan Tamil To Contest For Labour Party In Harrow East

A daughter of Sri Lankan Tamil Uma Kumaran is contesting to be the Labour Party’s Member of Parliament for the London Borough of Harrow. Kumaran was born in London and raised in Harrow, but says she comes from a strong and closely knit family from Sri Lanka.

Uma

“My parents fled to Britain in the midst of a civil war, Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn worked tirelessly to help them settle here. They have since worked hard to rebuild their lives and raise a family in Harrow,” the Labour candidate says on her official website.

Kumaran says her late Grandfather was one of the first civil servants to break ranks and join the front of the trade union picket line defending workers’ rights. “It’s these values that I was brought up on,” she says.

“The community in Harrow has given me, my family and so many others everything – I’m determined to stand up for thousands of people like us against this Tory government. It’s a wonderful place to live, the most diverse borough in the country and a model for all the great things multicultural Britain can achieve,” Kumaran says.

She obtains a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Politics and a Master of Science (MSc) in Public Policy both from Queen Mary University of London and speaks Tamil, Sinhala, English, French and German languages.

I don’t know much about her background or what she stands for when it comes to Sri Lankan issues.

As a Sri Lankan I am very happy for her.

I hope she will not turn into yet another die-ass-pora mouthpiece.

I hope she will represent somehow all of us here in Sri Lanka. And work to build bridges among all Sri Lankans.

    Cheers!

I don’t want her to represent 20 Million stupid people.

If you stupid people leave her alone she may have great potential to be wise world state-person, because she is not polluted by Tamil/Sinhala parochialism, not yet anyway.

        Native,

Believe me London is heavily polluted by “stupid” Tamil parochialism.

Hope it has not affected her. Perhaps, she is wise enough to stay away from that kind of “stupid” crap.

I wish her all the best. Hope she will make us all proud her roots here in Sri Lanka.

        Cheers!

It depends how crap your Sinhala/Buddhists and their exclusive state treat the minorities, including Muslims, Tamils, Christians, my people, ………others.

Could you put me in touch with her so that I can ask her to campaign on behalf of my people.

She is educated enough to Chose and decide what she would do.

              Why not?

You have your diaspora nutters on both sides of the divide to make things worse for all of us. The state has its own Sinhala/Buddhist diplomatic missions to hide their undemocratic practices and war crimes from being questioned by ordinary foreign folks.

              Okay lets compromise.

You can have 5% of her campaigning time for yourselves, equally divided between Tamils and Sinhalese. Rest of the 95% I like her to spend on campaigning my people’s plight including land grapping.

Its a good deal, take it.

    Dear Ms. Uma Kumaran,

All Sri Lankans should be very proud of you and support you.

From your picture, I could not not tell if you you were Tamil, Sinhala or Indian, or even a non-Hijab wearing Muslim ( We still have many left).

        Native Vedda,

Yes. I could not tell the difference. Even the original inhabitants Native Veddahs could not tell the difference. They all originated from the Southern Indian Gene Pool.

Even, the DNA would not be able to tell the difference.

Then, how come, the Sinhala Buddhists, the Tamil Hindus, the Tamil Christens and the Sinhala Christians in decreasing participating order were going after each other throughout the last so many years and even today?

          BBS Rep,

“Anyway she is cute – I will give you that.”

Amarasiri can agree on that, as this is based on observations and data, and not based on Myths on Nirvana, Nibbana, Samsara, Rebirth, Hell and Heaven etc.

          http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/cute

          cute [kyoot] Show IPA
          adjective, cut·er, cut·est.
          1. attractive, especially in a dainty way; pleasingly pretty: a cute child; a cute little apartment.
          2. appealing and delightful; charming: What a cute toy!
          3. affectedly or mincingly pretty or clever; precious: The child has acquired some intolerably cute mannerisms.
          4.mentally keen; clever; shrewd.

Uma Kumaran, it is best to keep religion out.

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Weinberg

His views on religion were expressed in a speech from 1999 in Washington, D.C.:

“‘Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.”[14]

        Thurai,

NM, Pieter Keuneman were colleagues of the brilliant lawyer, historian and Marxist Dr. Colvin R. de Silva.
CP de Silva came from a distinguished Balapitiya family – was a Civil Servant highly held by the farmers of NCP. He joined the SLFP. I cannot recall if he was in SWRD’s Cabinet but he certainly was a senior Minister in Mrs B’s Govt and, thereafter, a senior in the UNP Govt of Dudley Senanayake. His sister was the late Paedetrician Dr. Stella de Silvia and his brother R.T. de Silva – one time Chairman/CTB.

As far as I know CPdeS was neither member of the CP or LSSP. K.P. de Silva – a clerk in the CWE – came in to politics in the late 1980s and I believe he was a nominated MP.

Get that bankster to give you the job in merchant banking then you simply swipe off billions of dollars because for each billion you are locked up for an year but don’t be like Raj R who took just petty cash and is rotting for 11 years (that’s gota’s I spy).

When you come out the whole Tamil diaspora would follow you add more billions then 1000 sq miles create floating dock somewhere in Asia(Helsinki style) There you could have Nallur temple, mango trees and your vasanti malige. Why not just thinking outside the box because you southerners and northerners both villagers have so much lust?

Then you are sure to be the new record holder miracle of Asia and ape shit king kong familial would put 2 fingers in their own booty than you taking the trouble and troubling 20 million folk.
How’s that for an idea because if I were to vote for a bankster then it would be Dick Cheney who nicked $80 billion oil of iraq and started gulf war 1. He did not kill many of his own people but they volunteered as patriots.

Good luck to her and I dont know how many noticed it but Sinhalese is one of the languages that she is fluent in (that too being born in UK),I wonder how many Sinhales are fluent in Tamil living in Sri Lanka let alone abroad!

Another example of Sri Lankas loss is another countries gain

DJ forecast this – not to internationalize the ethnic issues of SL. The
outcome is Tamils now form the largest diaspora in the world (?) and they are to stay with a say in Western politics: It becomes imperative that they serve their community links at all times. As Lankans we must wish
    her well.

As a part of the Tamil Diaspora I wish you will be elected and do what is best for our community and all the people in Harrow. We must be thankful to
the successive Sinhala Government for doing the Tamils a great favour for providing the opportunity for us to realize
our full potential. You Uma is one the any young young people who make us proud.
    All the best.

Congratulations! Uma is a role model for all Sri Lankan women. Only those who are jealous of her achievements would post comments criticizing and ridiculing her.
i really cant understand why men stoop so low to drag her ethnic background which is not relevant at ball. This shows how ingrain racism in this patriarchal society.

” She obtains a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Politics and a Master of Science (MSc) in Public Policy both from Queen Mary University of London and speaks Tamil, Sinhala, English, French and German languages”.

I dont think she is suitable for srilankan poltics. Look like highly educated.

Uma, hopefully, gets elected to the British parliament. She should serve all the people in Harrow irrespective of their race, gender and class. Additionally I hope her actions will help reconciliation and unity among Tamils, Sinhalese and Muslims both in Britain and in Sri Lanka.

Having been a member of the left movement in Sri Lanka and the British Labour Party for decades I welcome her candidature. I sincerely hope that she gets elected and remains true to her declared views and remain opposed to US’s past military aggressions against Vietnam, Indonesia, Chile, Iraq etc. and the continuing military interventions in the Middle East and elsewhere. I hope she will be guided more by MP’s like Tony Benn, Geremy Corbyn and George Gallaway than the Blairite Tories, if any left still inside the LP.

Uma appears to be a breath of fresh air to emerge from the largely inward looking Tamil Diaspora.

I wish her the success she deserves.

Blarite Tories are still there in the LP,who is David Milliband? Is he not New Labour of the Redrose type?
He certainly is not of the Redflag days of Labour’s glorious past.
You should know what I am talking about.

“i don’t support socialist parties wherever they are.”

      Why not?

Could you name one socialist party which remains true to itself.

native veddha, you are absolutely spot on. socialism is only a slogan. an educated girl like uma need not follow the socialist path. i think she is an opportunist who wants to be an m p and harrow probably is one of the safe labour seats owing to a large asian population who always vote labour. if i were to live in harrow i wouldn’t vote for her.

“i think she is an opportunist who wants to be an m p and harrow probably is one of the safe labour seats”

Whats wrong in aspiring to become an MP in the UK parliament.

After the expense scandal which I heard from my elders, the MP’s are highly scrutinized by British media and unable to claim false expenses claim. Therefore you can be sure that money is not the motivator.

Remember she is not contesting for the Sri Lankan parliament also she does not owe a thing to Sri Lankan people.

“harrow probably is one of the safe labour seats owing to a large asian population who always vote labour”
It’s not the strictest of rules when its badagini for the whites too cause they refrain from voting.
Boris was a case in point for 34 seats that gave him the upper over ken the socialist.
The request of the industrious Tamils was not housing, employment but home back home- mampalam thinna asaya…..

Now with all the cuts biting into the poor and middle class they would go for the best of the worst – another hung Parliament.

Thurairajasingham was a pioneer Leftist of the North. It is great that his grand daughter is taking to serious politics. All the Best to you, Uma!

Though born and brought up in the UK she also speaks Sinhala among many other languages. That is a good thing in that she will attract support from all Sri Lankan expats if she stays clear of racial politics. Good luck to her.

      Piranha,

Here’s hoping Uma’s Sinhala is well-intentioned and not the bogus
and devious andara Demala of the Big Chief. Would love to hear her Sinhala. Here’s hoping it is as good as that of Sumanthiran’s.

      It sounds good.

She should be able to tell both people off in all these languages.
