In another symbolic gesture of Buddhist hegemony over the Tamil dominated parts of the island, Secretary to the Ministry Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Army Commander Dayaratne yesterday inaugurated a sparkling new Buddhist temple in the former rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi in the Wanni region and enshrined the Buddha’s sacred relics in its pinnacle.
The pagoda at the Mankulam Sri Sugatha Viharaya was unveiled last morning and preceded by an all night pirith chanting, the Defence Ministry said.
“Security Force Headquarters-Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN),fully supported the construction of this new pagoda at the request of the temple incumbent, Ven Hingurakande Sumana Thera since it is place of Buddhist worship with a long history, but remained totally dilapidated for more than thirty years after terrorism for separation commenced in the North,” the Ministry said on its website.
The Defence Ministry said a special illumination pooja had been held the same evening in the premises were to bring the two-day ceremonies to an end. Security Forces HQ Kilinochchi troops and Engineer Service Regiment troops lent their expertise for the construction, the Ministry said.

Lord Buddha will be astonished to see what the present day foolish Buddhists are doing worshiping trees , dagobas, etc. Gota being a fool himself Opening a New Dagoba In Kilinochchi is not a great surprise.

Well done Kothapaya.
Please build a mosque too in Kilinochchi. There are plenty of kovills and churches in Kilinochchi so don’t need any more. But there is a severe lack of Muslim and Buddhist shrines.
Seyyidina Sheikh Usman Ibn Abdur Rahman (PBUH) or the patron saint of Srilanka was in Kilinochchi where there was an ancient masjid. It has to be rebuilt.
Thank you Sir! May the Merciful God be pleased with you.

Tamil invasion of Colombo has built many kovills in Colombo. Far too many now.
Relocate some of these into poor areas in Tamil Nadu.

Enshrining the relics of the Buddha or the relics of Buddhism itself?
/
Upul / October 19, 2013
As a follower of the Buddha, I will venture to point out that Buddhism IS NOT a religion. It was made out to be one by the clergy so they can get the benefits that accrue to a clergy.
Over history there have been many Buddha’s. It is an individual who through his/her self control and self awareness reaches the various levels of enlightenment.
If you have to look at your smart phone every minute or need to drive your car to the junction to get a loaf of bread…you are not likely yo make it, in this life!!!
Prince Siddharta GAVE UP his Royal life to pursue the truth, of what life is means. Do we have a purpose in this world, and what is it and how do we know? You think Gota has the intellect to manage these curiosities?

Let us build more stupas and more temples.Let the government appoint at least one Buddhist monk for each Buddhist family in the country. Let each family have its own Bodhi tree and hold poojas 3 times a day..Import shiploads of Buddha-relics distribute them amongst the Buddhists. Let the “Sinhala Buddhists” attain Nibbaana. Sooner the better!

Recently there was a news item stating that 400 Buddhist temples are closed down due to lack of bud hist priests.
Probably they are out on the Killing Fields. Bodu Bala Sena?
How are you going to find a priest when there is already a Shortage.
These aside. On more serious vein.
1.The Buddhist Vihare constructed at Mankulam is In Mullaitivu District. The Defense Secretary should know this If he is really that.
2. None of the Maps maintained by the State Shows existence of a Place of Buddhist worship prior to 2004.
3. There are no Place of Historical Significance shown on any State Maps.
4. The Priest/Monk Who told that there was a Buddhist Temple at the Site is the Greatest utter-er of Untruth unfit to be in the Sacred Yellow Robes. Unless the enlightened one permitted monks to lie on behalf of Buddhism. This is another lie imagined by A monk Similar to Mahanam of Mahvamsa fame. Where He Crossed the Adams bridge with 700 passengers in a ship through the Palk Strait without sighting land on either side.
5. ” Security Force Headquarters-Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN),fully supported the construction of this new pagoda at the request of the temple incumbent, Ven Hingurakande Sumana Thera since it is place of Buddhist worship with a long history, but remained totally dilapidated for more than thirty years after terrorism for separation commenced in the North,” the Ministry said on its website”.
Better verify the above Statement without accepting the Direchcha lanuva tended by Ven H S T the greastest con artist of the century.

Fail to see the logic if one community wants to build places of worship every 300 meters just as in Abu Dhabi. BTW the Masjids are over crowded here. Why should this scare the shit out of people if there is a necessity and a population to support it. The law of economics will take care of the excess / wastage.

man jim softy, tell me who can pronounce a sinhala name. sinhala words aren’t complete. few letters from tamil and few from god knows where and they stop half way and incomplete. sinhala dialect itself is an inferior and a primitive dialect. a dialect without poetry is garbage. can you name one chingala poet. don’t bother to reply. chingalam is garbage.

I agree that Sinhala race has been a laughing stock to the whole world. Sinhala bought nothing but shame to Ceylon.. I bet everyone would agree that Sinhala race is the most lowest of all race. Even if you look at the level of education the Tamils have, there are scientist, doctors, engineers of all sort. I never heard of any Sinhala intellectuals . There are only Sinhala rapists, racists, child molesters. This is 100% absolute truth.

Could you tell us the origin/etymology of YAPAPATUNA?
Are you hoping that your Sinhala/Buddhist archaeologist would one day find a 2,500 year old Vijaya YAPA book shop under Nallur Temple?

Most comments reflect the mind set of the contributors who are currently living in comfort in Western countries..
If political parties in Western countries, where they live, adopt racist or emulate the Sri Lankan politicians whom many in this forum seem to admire , then many of those made racist comments in this forum will see the daylight. The West would build more churches to house them before they flee to their country of origin. That is the day current Victors will respect the vanquished.
In this scenario Pirith or Poojas would not save you from the racist outburst in the countries where you now comfortably live cheering Mayhinder bros and the Maha Sangha.
Do not forget, Hitler lived only 6 decades ago.
He was cheered by the Nazis no less than we cheer the current leaders in Sri Lanka.

The building of a Buddhist temple/vihara in Mankulam is a blatant attempt to impose Sinhala – Buddhist hegemony over the Thamils. It is cultural genocide at its worst form. The temple/vihara was built by the army at government expense. Has any church/mosque/temple built by the army at government expense? More over there are no Buddhists laymen in Mankulam. On the contrary the Hindu temple in Dambulla is slated for demolition by officials along with a mosque under pressure from Buddhist monks who demanded their removal from a Buddhist sacred area.
Thousands of Buddhist monks and lay supporters stormed the mosque in the central part of Dambulla town last year claiming it was constructed illegally. They forced their way into the building and damaged some furniture, dispersing only after officials promised a solution. Muslims deny that the mosque is an illegal construction.
