A Heartbreaking Story: ‘Agape Orphanage’ Ripped Apart

By Eva Kodithuwakku

Eva Kodithuwakku

I am a Sri Lankan lady 72 years of age and was residing overseas for 12 years. Upon returning to Sri Lanka in 2007, I visited the Agape Children’s Home in Tissamaharama – an orphanage run by Rev. Dayaratne (Parish Priest of the Assembly of God Church) and his wife Sister Mala.

I offered to work at the Home as a volunteer, handling the administration and also to teach English to the children. During this period I was touched to see the way the children were brought up as one family. They called Sister Mala and Rev. Dayaratne ‘Amma’ (Mum) and ‘Thatha’ (Dad) who in turn showered the children with parental love they so deserved. I realized that this was not run like a normal orphanage but a loving home; they were ‘one big happy family.’

With no intention of opening an orphanage, Rev. Dayaratne and his wife Mala opened their home to receive an abused child way back in year 2001. With the increase in numbers, it was registered as an orphanage under ‘Agape Children’s Home’ in 2006. Presently it houses over a 100 children at any given time.

Agape Children pleading not to be taken away

To date it has sheltered around 200 children up to the age of 18 years which include some who are now employed and even given in marriage. These children include abused, abandoned, orphaned and destitute children sent by the Department of Child Care and Probation and the Magistrate Courts in Hambantota, Tissamaharama, Balapitiya and Angunakolapelessa of Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Muslim backgrounds.

At Agape Home, all girls and boys only under the age of 13 are housed in 8 cottages equipped with beds, linen, toilets and other basic facilities. Each cottage accommodates 10 – 12 children along with a full-time House-Mother who works on a voluntary basis. This section has a kid’s play area, playground, auditorium, large dining hall, library, computer room, common toilets and showers. Rev. Dayaratne, Sister Mala and their 20-year old daughter live in a separate house within the premises, while their second daughter aged 14 years lives in one of the cottages with the other children.

On the opposite side of the road is a 2500 sq ft two storied building used as a dormitory to house only boys of ages 13 – 18 years. This too is equipped with toilets, kitchen and a pantry.  Rev. Dayaratne’s only son aged 15 also lives in this building along with the other boys.

The home is also blessed with a mini bus and a 3-wheeler, to meet the transportation needs of the children. The bus also picks up other children in the village on its way to school and back.

Agape has its own pre-school situated within its premises and is also attended by some of the children from the surrounding villages. The rest of the children of school going age attend two Government Schools in Tissamaharama.  All these children despite their own religion learn Buddhism as a subject up to GCE O/L.

Amongst these are 03 children aged 12, 13 and 14 who attend ‘Apey Pattaw’, a school for children with special needs located in Hambantota. It is an emotional sight to watch all these children kiss their Amma and Thatha before they leave to school in the mornings. Another 08 year old boy who obtained a full scholarship attends an International School in Colombo.

Agape Home was placed first in the Hambantota District and third in the Southern Province for quality standards awarded by the Department of Probation and Childcare Services in 2010.

The home is registered under the Child Care Probation Department and does not receive any financial assistance from the state.  However, there are many who have heard and visited the home, and they voluntarily support it in many ways. The main costs of running the home include electricity, water, food, medical, transport and education.

Due to the constraints of meeting these operational expenses and in order to become self-sufficient, a vegetable plot was started about 04 years ago behind the boys’ dormitory. Subsequently a poultry farm was set up with the intention to provide an egg a day for a child.

The farm then expanded to include a piggery, mainly to sell the animals when mature, which brought in a reasonable amount of income to run the home. Both the poultry and the piggery were handled by two men aged 54 and 21 years and not by any of the children. The home ran a small farm shop by the roadside to sell some of the produce from the farm.

On Saturday 23rd of March 2013, one of the men in charge of the piggery was preparing to slaughter one animal. During this time some of the older boys from the Home were engaged in clearing branches and undergrowth in the area where they had their vegetable plots. An interested party from the neighborhood known to the children had prompted the boys to leave the vegetable plot and run towards the piggery. These events had been discreetly filmed and was aired on a local TV Channel on 24th night, alleging that the boys from the home are used to slaughter pigs. Pastor Dayaratne was arrested the following day, based on this TV report and later released on bail.

The propaganda against the Agape Home continued with the distribution of handbills, posters and organized rallies in and around Tissamaharama. The same TV Channel on the 4th of April also showed a child whose face was disguised, purported to be from the Agape Home, accusing the Rev. Dayaratne of sexual abuse of girls in the Home. This child was never at Agape Home and is not connected to the Home in any way.

The same evening officials of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) arrived with a court order at the home to remove all the children. Despite screams and cries asking their ‘Amma’ and ‘Thatha’ to save them all 76 of children were reluctantly bundled into a single 42-seat bus amidst their protests and were taken away at around 9.00 pm. This painful incident will remain in the memmory these children for many years to come.

Photos of the incident taken at the time were confiscated and destroyed by some persons who came along with the NCPA officials. The children had been taken first to Tissamaharama and then to the Lunugamvehera Police Stations. The villagers living nearby told us how they heard the screams of the children up to their homes and had come running to see what was happening. The bus had then left and eventually arrived at the NCPA Head Office at Madiwela, Kotte the following morning around 7.30. All the children had been put into an empty hall in the building with only a few bed sheets on the ground to sleep on.

Up to now we have not had any contact with these children although we learnt that all of them have been scattered in various orphanages throughout the country. No Media Organization has interviewed these children. Among them are 3 girls and 3 boys sitting for the GCE (O/L) examination and 2 girls sitting for the GCE (A/L) examination this year. They plead that they be released to come back to Agape Home and continue their studies. Their school books, clothes and toys still remain in their little cottages with their House-Mothers still waiting anxiously for their return.

These children, who have never known what it is to have a home, love of a mother or father, never had peace in their lives, abused, never gone to school have got a new lease of life at the Agape Home. These scared and broken children found love, peace, joy and finally a FAMILY that each child calls his own. I know for a fact that they don’t have all the luxuries of life but they had the greatest treasure of a Mother, Father, brothers and sisters.

Sadly their lives have been ripped apart and their hearts broken by a handful of heartless selfish people with ulterior motives. My only request is that those responsible for the removal of these children which resulted in the breakup of this family will heed the voices of these broken children and allow them to return to Agape and unite once again with the only family that most of them have ever known.

Looks like the work of the fascist Bodu Balu Sena. This is what happens in a lawless land. I feel sorry for the kids and the caring priest and the other people looking after this poor children.

Unicef and Save the Children should do an investigation on this since the children have been traumatised and those responsible including the Child Protection officers must be brought to trial and held accountable.

This writer is trying to mislead the expatriate crowd and the rest of the world.
It was very clear what was happend at this place with regard to the slaughter of pigs. And the involvement of some boys.

      And you would know?

      ruwee (nee Rajafucksa) tell me:

      1. Have you visited the place?
      2. Did you see what happened i.e., were you a witness?
      3. Have you spoken to any other witnesses of the reported incident?
      5. Have you spoken to any of the children?
      6. Have you spoken to the Rev. and wife and got their side of the story?
      7. Have spoken with the TV crew and got their side of the story and questioned them to verify their story against the authors report?
      8. Have bothered to find out what the institution has achieved to date?

If the answer to any of the above questions is NO (and I doubt you have verified), then your comment about misleading the world is out of place. You are effectively accusing the author of lying without verifying facts for yourself. Do you know if the TV program was lying? What motive do you think the author has to lie and more importantly what is your motive to think that she is lying?

This type lawless, heavy handed action by the authorities before a proper investigation is undertaken is not appropriate. The interest of the children has to come before the rights of the Bodu Balu Sevalayaas and the Rajafucksas. A similar sort of knee-jerk reaction was taken against the orphanage in Ratmalana. I am willing to bet my last rupee that the reaction was not because of the so-called slaughter of pigs by the children, but it is because it part of the assembly of god church.

ruwee, Please crawl back under the rock you came from and stay there.

So this is another made up story like Nolimit is distributing Birth Controll toffees (made in a toffee factory belongs to a buddhists) to Buddhists girls. Poor little children are suffering due to the act of BBS thugs! You know these thugs wanted to run the orpnage, like their colleague PAHALAGAMA Somarathne Thera..

I have just got to know that one of our girls of around 13 years, has been kept in the Tissamaharama Police for the last three days. Who is going to be responsible for this little one’s safety when she is a girl who cannot talk properly. Due to her having drunk kerosene as a kid her vocal chords were damaged and she cannot talk properly although she can hear. Agape sent her to a special school to be trained in a industry/career of sewing/art. On the 8th of this month she was taken from there and then taken to a hospital where she was warded. Now she is at the Tissamaharama Police station and I think this is a real form of Child Abuse. If you are interested in checking this out send someone to the Police station. Her name is K G Kanchana. A beautiful girl .. now at the mercy of God knows who… and is this how these lovely kids are going to be looked after. Does no one care? We cannot do anything as she is under the custody of the Child care Authorities. To whom can we complain as they are the very people to whom we are supposed to complain in case of child abuse. Does this not come under the category of child abuse? I am aghast at this.

How sad isn’t it ??? Kanchana is removed from her home & kept in a police station instead…wow…who’s responsible for this ??? How long is she going to be there ??? This is the plight these kids have fallen in to, just because a few adults are warp minded..to think conversation is taking place. We don’t have to convert any of them..these wrapped minded people have converted them by their actions.

School started today after the new year break…none have have been sent to school. There are children sitting for there OL’s & AL’s in December & August. Is this called Child Protection ???? Do these so called people really care for the children & their education ??? Isn’t this a violation of child rights ???

There have been similar attempts to close down children’s homes run by Christians or Christian organisations. Most are usually unsuccessful, but sadly this time they have succeeded.

      ruwee,

Who ever you are, please answer these following questions.

1)Have you ever given a single Dana atlease once to a childrens home of hundred children.

2)Have you ever given clothes….even used for a childrens home even once.

3)Have you ever volunteered a single day to help children, to wash them, to clean their clothes, to cook their food, to feed them, help them to read, write or sing, help them with their school and home work, attend them when they were sick.

4)Have you ever celebrated a single Birthday among Homeless children.

5)Have you ever taken a sick homeless child to a doctor or to a hospital.

6)Have you ever volunteered to clean a homeless childrens shelter a single day.

7)Have you ever given 100.00 rupees to a children’s homeless shelter or paid a single electricity bill.

3)Havent’s you slaughtered a single chicken at your home when you were a child (16 years and up)

4)Haven’t you ever fed chicken or Goats or cows even once in your life.

5)Have you ever visited a chicken, goat or a cattle farm in life.

6)Haven’t you ever got any help from a child in your life.

ruwee…….All I could say is that you are a mere Hypocrite trying to show your clean hands, while not doing a single deed to homeless children while criticsing the people who are helping these poor homeless children.

You are pretending that you are living in another world when you have not even given 100 rupees to a homeless child.
You are called the hypoctits who are white painted tomb stones.,..white outside, rotten inside.

I myself have worked in my fathers small chicken farm (part time) and have slaughtered chicken when I was 12 years old, and if you go to villeges you could see many children taking care of their family chicken, goats, cows and pig farms including slaughter.

You know what……this was all created by the Bodu Balu sena who was looking to sling mud at a Christian Evengilical church running to help over 100 homeless children while taking care of all their needs.

If you work just one day, you will see how difficult to cook and feed 100 children three meal per day, wash and clean them and their clothes, dress them, send them to school, taking care of their studies, taking care of their health and other physical, mental and emotional issues.

My mothers used to say how Irish catholic sisters helped them to study in the boarding school and met all their daily needs when they were children doing schooling.

Also my mother said how the Chtistian Sisters helped in our hospitals taking care of sick and poor patients even at the cancer hospital without getting a single cent from government.

You know what this crazy, un grateful Sinhala Buddhist Clergy did….
They did not want them to serve in Sri Lanka…..and all of them went to India….where India took tham with open arms, and ever since they served both in India and Pakistan. Mother theressa is one of them.

Taking care of 100 children full time feeding them, clothing them, sending them to school, taking care of sick children and almost looking after them like their Parents is unbelievable unless through God’s Grace.

You take my word today…..that Sri Lanka was never at peace after Independence and never will be in future.

Sri Lanka is consist with Ungrateful, unappreciative, cunning, envy and born hatered , bad blood Sinhala Buddhist Society consist of Buddhist Clergy and Buddhist followers who are doing everything against Lord Buddha’s preaching.

From now on it will only go down the distructive path and God will make them to Beg for food from the outside world to feed their own people………Even now their women work as slaves in Middle East.Only because of Jealoursy, false Pride, envy and Racism is incorporated in their Blood.

The never appreciative, ungrateful will ruin and spread hatered and spill more blood in our country.

THERE IS A THING CALLED “WARNING” OR A “FIRST STRIKE” IN OUR LAW AND I WONDER WHY GOSL DID NOT USE IT FOR THE AGAPE CHILDREN HOMELESS CENTER. HOPE BOTH YOU AND BBS AND RAJAPAKSE GOVERNMENT KNOW ABOUT IT.

Now feed those children with “Punnakku” coconut scrape and “thanakola” grass …..which the health minister has the receipee……and make them stay in dark dungeons.(due to high electricity suage)

Good luck to both you, BBS and Rajapakse Government.

MY PRAYERS, LOVE AND AFFECTION GOES TO AGAPE ORPHANAGE PASTOR Rev. Dayaratne (Parish Priest of the Assembly of God Church) and his wife Sister Mala, HIS FAMILY, THE HELPERS AND VOLUNTEERS.

GOD IS WITH YOU ALL FOR EVER.

UNICEF and Save the Children Federation should investigate this and do a proper report and release it to the public.

The people responsible for the dirty campaign against this Father and the children’s home and who have TRAUMATIZED these poor children – Bodu Bala Sena and the responsible officer at NCPA – need to be held accountable, brought to trial and punished.
The IMPUNITY of the BBS Sena and its cronies who are bringing great harm and disrepute to Buddhism MUST END.
We hope that the Christian community rally around and pursue the investigation and fights this case to the finish, unlike the cowardly Muslim political leadership who made a BACK ROOM settlement with the Thugs in Saffron who are backed by the regime – even after they were for one apprehended and brought to court over the Fashion Bug attack.

This is a great story Eva – I hope and pray that these kids are safely returned to where they belong – why should they have to pay for others misgivings and political misnomas ? Poor kids ….

This is supposed to be a peaceful country – with no war now – and it baffles me that such events still occur – what are the hirearchy doing ? Turning a blind eye (as usual ) ? My goodness, someone has to pay for these sins …. Have they no faith ? no beliefs ? no compassion ? no heart ? no convictions ?

Very sad indeed but thank you sincerely for covering this diabolical chian of events so well – God Bless you.

For the Rajapaksa regime and its shameless supporters “international conspiracy” has replaced the LTTE as a convenient scapegoat for its own dastardly and criminal acts. Keep blaming the international conspiracy, the LTTE rump, the americans, the Indians etc etc.. for all your ills for for ever and see what happens. Doomsday is around the corner for Sri lanka and the regime, my friend.

        @Piranha

You are 100% correct. Even the burning of the Uthayan newspapers was made to look like those involved had done it to make the government look bad.

Regarding the Agape Orphanage, I believe it’s nothing more than a dog in the manger attitude of the extremists who wanted this orphanage closed down. I guess their biggest problem was the fact that it was run by a christian priest and his wife. There have been plenty of non-catholic churches vandalised and forced to shut down around the country. Since christians are a peaceable crowd and don’t make much of a noise, non of this has got in to the mainstream news.

The NCPA is a corrupt organisation which thrives on the misery of women and children on the pretext of protecting them. They also frame innocent people with very little evidence on the slightest hint of “abuse”. They barge into peoples homes without a police warrant and make unauthorised video recordings and take photographs of peoples private homes. From top to bottom, the officials are like hounds looking for so-called victims and so-called abusers in order to justify their existence and salary. The whole organisation should be disbanded and brought under stricter regulation where severe penalties should be imposed on the officials for falsification of evidence and implication of innocent victims. The sooner the better.

On Nov.25 2011 the NCPA & police ‘raided’ an orphanage run by Missionaries of Charity,on alleged complaints of “sales” of babies.
The sister in charge was hauled to court.
Cardina Malcolm Ranjith protested and said that he would not attend state functions thereafer, unless a proper investigation was done.
This happened and it was found that abandoned babies sent by courts to the home were given for adoption according to the law.

This raid and transfer of orphans too appears similar. The NCPA has without any proof done this.
This is due to jelousy and hatred of parties against the religion of the persons running the home.

There are ‘great’ and ‘devout’ buddhists who carry ‘relics’,erect buddha statues, contest for ‘nilame’ posts, publicly posture as saviours of buddhism, but never donate to charitable enterprises.
These ‘political’ buddhists even enter parliament.
It is to be hoped that a proper investigation is done and the children restored to where they belong.

But,I thought someone said that butchering was only done by older boys and that too only on days when the regular guy does’t show up.

Rectifying the anomaly would have been far better than destroying everything. Looks like a case of act first and investigate later,a typical public service response.

My Sri Lankan brothers, your land needs healing and faith for the next generation to rise and build a better South East Asia. The subcontinent has already shed enough blood because of ethnic differences, there is no need for more. These children need a home, and a loving family give it back to them.

As I understood – these children are parentless. So where have they been sent now ? How can each of them face the life ?

If any irregularities have been the case the authorities to remove the children from them, it should have been done following proper investigations in a civlized country, just because pig issue bothered the others means not that the life of these should be destroyed in this way ? I know how it could feel without parents – from one of my very good friends has grown up in a home of that kind, child psychologists should react and do the due. My god ? what happened to srilanka.

Can any body add further facts in this regard please ?. We are going to help the kids together with those who genuinely engaged with them. I would not even touch the issue, if this is a kind of fraud… please add facts please.

Yes we pray & try to do & will continue to do all that we can for these kids….appreciate all help.

This is absolutely a case for UNHRC to put pressure on LANKEN government.

So what was the basic reason them to remove these kids ? Is it that easy GOV THUGS to involve in private life in this way ?

Human right activits will have see this soon. I have already provided them some facts in this regard.

Please take care of you both – They can even harm you in coming days because their practises have been – to dismiss/assualt/abduct/murder … this we have seen in the recent past.

MP – the today´s CJ to the nation – should be charged for his innacurate statements. He has made it before UNHRC a year ago. So I wonder why the HR activits stay deaf until now ?

How can a CANDIDATE with that long record of exp in LAW PROFESSION could have made such irresponsible statements in terms of the missing of a father of two teeny boys. Why the president stay – kimbula kiribath gilala wage… is should be addressed by AMNESTY international and all ther bodies work for these issues.

She Ms Eknaligoda adds here FACTs that could be VERY useful to all human right activists.

May this innocent family be saved from All gods.

Till I read Eva’s article I believed the story in a TV channel( Swarnawahini?). So much so I am questioning your article. Have you checked your facts. I remember seeing children and pigs. What was the children doing with the pigs. What I don’t understand is that how the media never or under reports the other side. Eva, did you try giving your article to the papers to be published. Thanks to CT for giving space for alternate voices.

Media is very reluctant to publish stories which is against bbs in the last 2 months, now slowly I see some changes. In fact some one tried to buy space, but the print media refused.

I think Eva, the said parish priest should lodge a complaint (or you as a member of the public) with the National Human Rights Council. If what you say is true, they deserve to be brought to a forum.

I heard Swarnahini is a strong supporter of BBS.

Who is the oxymoron in charge of NCPA?

why do they act with the media all the time to have a big show like they did to Shanthi nivasa in morotumulla.

they act on suspicion not on facts. the lives of the innocence is put in chaos.

isn’t there a proper procedure of inquiry than this nazi rules?

I HAVE THE PRIVILEDGE OF WORKING DIRECTY WITH ONE SUCH
ORPHANAGE AND FIND THE KIDS TO BE HAPPY AND LOVED AND
    WELL TAKEN CARE OF.

PLEASE EVA GO FORWARD WITH THIS AND SEE THAT JUSTICE
    IS DONE

Let us assume Swarnawahini story as true. Then the most sensible thing would have been for NCPA or govt. department in charge to take over the premises and run the place under their supervision until a judicial inquiry is held and if anything illegal activity has happened those responsible could have been punished. What happened now is traumatizing the innocent children.

Or provide them with most need to run the ophanage with a transparent manner. If the abuses have been their agenda, then the authorities will have the prima facie evidence to prove the small to grown up children why they would take such actions. Else, this will be considered by IC as an another mishadling under the guidance of the state. Why the authorities seem to lack proper is very questionable. They are playing with nearly a hundred of parentless children. If abuses are facts, those children are the ones that have to suffer by both sides.

why the responsible authorities are not sensitive enough in this kind of issues – in which the lives of hundreds of young ones are met – is very questionable. Those kids should be explained the reality before them being taken away from their livelyhoods.

Sisira,i totally agree with you. This government will use a sledgehammer to whack a cockroach and break the floor.Anyway the slaughter of pigs with so many children around the place should be banned. They would have been squealing in fear and pain and now the pigs have had the last laugh. The path you advised would have been what a western country would take, but we are not western but as rightfully pointed out by the whites, inferior blacks.Until the blacks can show that they can also produce good results they will have to accept the fact that the whites are right that we are inferior. In my life time i will not see blacks produce better or equal results as whites, which i yearn to see.

There’s a thing called “warning” or “First Notice” of which GOSL should have warned them without removing the children suddenly.

Tell me one single thing that GOSL does in Sri Lanka……when our women are sent to middle east to work as salves and also get killed and torture there.

This is a clear GOSL, GOTA and BBS conspiracy to sling mud at a Christian church who are helping poor childrens orphanage.

Eva and the citizens who have a genuine concern towards children should fight to save these children from becomming future Buddhist Talibans instigated by Gota and BBS.

I totally agree with the comments made by Rushmy Fonseka, as i have been a victim of the NCPA being scared for life! if i may put it that way, by them (NCPA) not conducting a impartial proper legal inquiry (which is not in our Legal dictionary anymore!)to complains and having pointed out eventually the False Accusations with given legal proof, they are still dilly dallying with my counter Complaint to take appropriate action(s) against the False Accuser?? Therefore, anyone who has a personal grudge against you Cu Complain to the NCPA, for them to do the dirty work on behalf of the complainant at the expense of us the tax payers! & most probably the False Complainant will prevail in this isle once called: “Pearl in the indian ocean”!! Unfortunately all the Pearls are stolen or washed abroad with our brain drain since the Education sector is not getting the required 6% of GDP.

When I first read the article I missed the video, but I just saw it and it was heart-breaking. I realise SL is currently a lawless country that can possibly be considered a failed state, but some of the legal brains of SL reading this article can volunteer (pro bono) their services and legally challenge the actions of NCPA and get a resolution for the sake of the children.

NCPA is doing a great job under the present chair person. She take action without fear or favour. Once she took action against a buddhist priest who was running an orphanage, for abusing children.
One should look at each case subjectively without mixing with politics or with BBS

Is your name Anoma? Next time you decide on self-glorification, try using a woman’s pseudonym instead of a mans like “Lalith” .

        Dear Lalith,

I prayed for you, yes i honestly did. And I did it with sincerity, with all my heart. Not only that, my prayers also include the chair person of NCPA. I know at this point in time, you may wonder if I am being sarcastic but I assure you that I am not.

I prayed for blessings upon your life and for your family. I prayed for good health, happiness and all things good that God wishes to bestow upon you and all at home. The same I pray for the chair person even though I am not sure of her name.

I can see everyone has a good heart and although we may see things differently, our good heart is just trying to do what it feels is correct, even though it may appear to be bad to the others. I know that nobody is born bad. Everyone is born pure and with a good heart. It is our experience in life that makes us see things differently.

I know because, many times I had thought I was right and even argue (even come close to fighting) with those who disagreed with me. Sometimes it turns out I was still right at the end. But there are other times when I later find out I was actually wrong. At first I felt so terrible whenever I find out I was wrong. At first I asked God to forgive me when I did wrong because I had caused hurt to someone. But now, I found out that, even that was wrong.

Now I learn that I need God’s forgiveness even when I had done “right”. This is because there were still arguments and conflicts in the way I had handled the situation. Worst of all, there were innocent by-standers who were affected, even hurt in the process of our argument.

This is when I came to realise that whether I am right and they are wrong…. or they are right and I am wrong….innocent by-standers can still be hurted.

Because of this, i can no longer say that i was right some of the time.

Because of this, i was wrong all the time.

i prayed for you and will continue to do so. i want to do so because i am happy to do so. Someone did this and much much more for me while I was still “in the dark” and i have benefited much because of his sincere action of love and care.

So with the same love and care i will continue to pray everyday for you, your family and loved ones, the chair person, even members of BBS and the leaders of the goverment of Sri Lanka.

May all find abundance of love, peace, joy and happiness together …in Harmony. Nobody should be hurted in pursue of such things. May all wrong be set right in Truth and with love.

        With Love and Blessings
        Ricky (Singapore)

Jealousy and suspicion of the other is the bane of Sri Lankan society. Not too long ago, the Missionaries of Charity were falsely accused by the NCPA. Once again it seems to have waded in to appease the “fears” of the other.

If the children have been well cared for, (the video posted with the article indicates the trauma the children underwent when plucked away from familiar surroundings), why should the NCPA disrupt their lives? Those children were traumatized once when they lost their parents; and they have been seared again. Can NCPA prove beyond doubt that these children have been abused in any way? What really was the charge against the orphanage, that all these children should be removed. If children are assigned chores, is that a crime. Don’t we all have our children help with household chores? If the argument is that some of these children helped with the slaughter of pigs, then even farmers should be prohibited from having their children assist with their farming and harvesting chores.

I am very interested in learning what the NCPA did to rescue the children who were caught in the crossfire at the tail end of the war and even at other times when children of all ethnicities suffered displacement and terror. Did they rush into rescue those children?

Sri Lankans rush to release cattle earmarked for slaughter with the idea of obtaining merit; but they stood by and watched when unarmed civilians were randomly slaughtered, some even cheered that on. Many remain silent on the anti-Muslim rhetoric.

Where is the justice for these children?

If the BBS, the politicians who support them and their thugs follow LOARD BUDDAH’S teachings, then there won’t be any problem in this country. As you said it is the reflection of jealousy , the so called Buddhists in Sri Lanka never bothered about their religion, but jealous about other coomunities, who follows their own religion. The great philosophy which LOARD BUDDAH brought to this world was destroyed only by those so called Buddhists and un-civilized Monks.

Children should help the parents ie teaching them social responsibility, but the work also has to be judged by the number of hours they work, do they go to school, have time to play and study. Even in middle class homes, children help parents, but it depends whether it is child friendly work and whether it impedes their education.
Having said this, NCPA should have investigated this so called “crime” before they took the children away. Proper investigation should be done under the national laws.
About swarnahini- they really promote racism. It is that channel that went on and on on this incident. I believed it.
Last night(20th) live at 8 programme- in the kiyana katha section, what the drunkard bus driver alias priest told months ago about Akurana mosques was repeated again. Generally kiyana katha repeats recent katha and not what was said months ago. Are they promoting the drunkard, when bbs is trying to shun him. What pleasure they have in promoting racism. It is sadism.

A day in the life of a child at Agape.
        Get up, have breakfast.
Go to school in the morning,
        Come back home,
        Have lunch & then relax.
Play in the evening till 6pm
After 6pm, homework & studies. (Mala looks into all books each day) children help each other to study, sometimes private tutors brought home for further studies) computer classes given as extra classes.
Have dinner & get to bed.
Chores : arrange bed, sweep & water the few plants around their own cottage. (Around 10-15 kids depending on the style of the cottage) & wash their own clothes. Smaller kids don’t do this…the house mothers do it for them.
As a kid….We had to make our own beds, wash are own clothes sweep & arrange the house. I remember when I was bigger, we had to cook too. None of these kids cook. (They are blessed) as a mum now. My daughter has to do the same, expect the washing clothes part, since we have washing machines. Is this such a crime to do house work ??? I know you too agree that we have to teach our kids to do such things. That is how they become better human beings in society.
All school teachers should be taken to task as well, since they get the kids to sweep the floor & gardens & tidy up the class rooms.

No point in going to court! It too belongs to those parayas! ! Swarnawahini was owned by a Poliya (interest) Madam who swindle poor buddhist’s money. 25 years ago she was nothing, having small Pawn Shops here and there. Now she is a BIG business magnet with the hard earned money of poor. We can see in her own TV how she does charity. she takes 100% from the poor and gives them back little over 10% to the same! So, it is impossible to expect a business ethics from this Madam. This all Buddhism we know:- Swindle, swindle, swindle…..

Someone should send this videeo clip to youtube and to the International community,UN,EU,CW and CHOGM to show GOSL atrocities done to the homeless children.

Currently Sri Lanka has 70& (seventy percent) children who are malnourished and 60% of adults who are under nourished.

It’s time to save Sri Lanka from absolute Dictatorial,Authoritarial and a Racist Regime.

Please see the followin web to see how Rajapakse Government punished Hon.Lalith Kotalawela who is a christian by acquiring his Golden Key Empire.

    news.lk/news/sri-lanka/4831-golden-key-credit-card-company-to-resume-operations

According to the information Hon.Lalith Kotalawela’s Golden Key assetts alone worth 90 Billion Rupees ……where as his libilities were only 78 Billion rupees………and in addition GK had assetts were in 16 other companies……….

“Mrs. Hapugoda, who is also the Chairperson of the Golden Key Depositors Association said that the company has a capital of Rs. 90 billion………….. In addition, the Golden Key Company owns assets of 16 other companies including the Golden Key Hospital at Cotta Road.”
while liabilities of the Company amounts to over Rs.78 billion.(niz)

THEREFORE MY QUESTION IS WHY RAJAPAKSES DID NOT ACQUIRE GK ASSETTS AS COLLATERAL AND PAID OFF THE DEPOSITORS…….

At the moment both Air Lanka and Mihin are LOOSING 200 BILLION RUPEES ANNUALLY ON LEASED AND BORROWED PLANES WITH NO ASSETTS IN HAND.

This is another example of how Jealours Rajapakses got revenge from a Christian Businessman.

Pastor Dayaratne is one of the finest men I have ever met. His giving heart is far beyond yours. He has sacrificed much of his life and his family’s to support children who would otherwise be tossed to the streets or be prey for predators who call themselves human beings. Pastor Dayaratne had given not only food, shelter and education but love, a sense of family, self confidence, self pride in each of these children who otherwise would have be neglected and abused.

Obviously some people, driven by their evil hearts, manipulated the “system” as well as the media to destroy this safe haven.

I dare each and every one of you to give your lives in order to raise, nurture and protect a multitude of children whom you accept without hesitation. Right now, what are you doing for your community? For others?

Let me just clarify that I have no discrimination against any person, religion or country…..now read on:

Fact: Agape Home was placed first in the Hambantota District and third in the Southern Province for quality standards awarded by the Department of Probation and Childcare Services in 2010.

These accusations from whoever are totally unfounded and I know that EVERYONE involved in this slanderous event will be taken to task in the courts.

    To the reporter:
YOU KNOW THE TRUTH OF WHAT YOU HAVE DONE AND ONLY YOU KNOW THE REASONS WHY YOU HAVE DONE THIS – I KNOW THE TRUTH AND IT WILL BE KNOWN IN TIME, IN THE RIGHT MANNER – DO YOU HAVE A PLAN B FOR AN ALTERNATIVE JOB AS THIS ONE IS COMING TO AN END? NO ONE WILL EVER BELIEVE ANYTHING YOU DO IN THE FUTURE WHEN THE TRUE COMES OUT.
HOW ARE YOU SLEEPING THESE DAYS? ARE YOU HAUNTED BY THE SCREAMING CRIES OF THE CHILDREN?

    To the BBS:
I DO NOT KNOW YOU FEW OR WHY YOU HAVE DONE SUCH A THING – BUT IF YOU TRULY ARE BUDDHIST THEN YOU KNOW YOU HAVE LIED – HOW ARE YOU SLEEPING THESE DAYS? THIS GOES AGAINST THE BELIEVES OF YOUR FAITH AND YOU GIVE A BAD IMPRESSION TO ALL THE TRUE FOLLOWERS – SOME OF WHICH I KNOW ARE DISGUSTED WITH YOU. I HAVE SEEN WITH MY OWN EYES STREET CHILDREN ON YOUR DOORSTEP REACHING OUT FOR FOOD AND LOVE ONLY TO BE CHASED WITH STICKS AND IGNORED.

To the so called Child Protection ‘LADY’:
YOU HAVE MADE A MOCKERY OF YOURSELF, YOUR DEPARTMENT, YOUR TEAM AND YOUR COUNTRY. NO ONE WILL BELIEVE IN ANY FUTURE CASES. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF. AND THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME….IS IT!

Questions for the above so called ‘professional’:

    a) If the protection of the children of Sri Lanka is your duty why have you not followed the professional and legals system?

    b) Why have you and still continue to try to make FALSE accusations without the facts?

    c) What have you done for these children for the last decade?

    d) What funds do you give to not only Agape but ALL orphanages/homes?

    e) Do you have any professionals within your department? If so, do YOU know that YOU have created more suffering and pain to these children than the historic and individual reason each child is at Agape?

    f) Are you that ignorant that you ignore the future of Sri Lanka and the world are the youth of today – these and thousands of other children will remember you but all for the wrong reasons?

    g) DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE TERM ‘GONE VIRAL’?
HOW IGNORANT YOU ARE TO THINK YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH THIS IN 2013.
HOW IGNORANT OF YOU TO THINK THE INTERNET IS NOT A POWERFUL TOOL TO INFORM AND EDUCATE.

    SHAME ON YOU.

My children and I are praying daily for these precious children in Sri Lanka along with the Reverend, the Reverend’s wife and the house mothers who must be indescribably distraught. Eva, bless you…your persistent, self-sacrificing love is awe-inspiring. This is a serious battle for lost souls…
Have you ever had a child taken from you? Can you imagine what that would feel like on both sides? Now fostering a 3.5 month old baby, I can tell you that, despite lack of biological connection, she is a true child of our hearts. She is loved completely. I cannot imagine the chaos and pain that is presently taking its toll on Agape adults and children. Do you honestly believe the local government has the resources to adequately provide for the physical and emotional needs of these children? Let’s be honest…in a tight economy, no matter where you are in the world, without the good will of humanity, government can provide little more than objective, cold directives for children who require the warmness that a living, breathing, heart-centered being has to offer. I speak of humanity, in this case. Humanity and the good will of people can provide more for the living soul than can a cold and detached system governed by budget restrictions and unidirectional political agendas. Government, while a lofty pursuit and a great bare minimum, cannot in itself fulfill the dynamic nature of human needs insofar as they relate to children. I see the restraints in our current foster system here in the U.S. I have heard of the restraints elsewhere as well. Just because one may not agree with another’s religious beliefs, does not mean they should deprive the needs of destitute children to achieve their own political agenda. What shame you bring upon yourself. My family and I have supported Agape’s cause for almost a year now, praying nightly for their health and well-being. We are utterly distraught to hear these children have been taken from the only loving family and home that they know. Agape is a special place and this false propaganda will be turned around to serve the glory of our Lord God – this I promise you. This hateful effort to blot Agape’s reputation will be used to achieve a higher purpose. There are greater powers at work and this low and incredulous, blasphemous attempt will be for naught. Our Lord God will use it for His glory and all will see His mighty power through the rubbish of these circumstances. Agape opponents, you should be trembling. This is not a threat, but perhaps a wake-up call for you. Thankfully, He accepts those who are reluctant to wake when the alarm clock sounds. Press snooze all you’d like, take out the battery and pull the plug….He calls nonetheless and it’s not too late for you.
Our prayers and thoughts are with Oshadie and Kasun, wherever they have been needlessly scattered….precious children born in the month of July, to whom we were counting on sending birthday gifts in just a couple months. They deserve the comforts of their home, of their toys, their classroom and, most of all, they deserve the steady flow of love and stability that they had grown to know and rely on. They have been denied these simple needs, these simple rights. What a terrible, hideous shame…
We are fervently praying for resolution and safe return of these innocent and most-desrving children.

Thanks Aunty Eva for revealing the truth to the world. I felt so helpless when I heard the false news which the TV channel was airing. Having known and supported this home personally I knew the truth was far from being told.

First let me also tell all of you that the piggery is NOT in the premises of the children’s home (girls up to 18 and boys under 13) but ACROSS THE ROAD where the older boys are housed.
This is one big family and please tell me which family, that has kids don’t get into messes…..

The worst part is the “decision makers” never visited the Agape home. Never seen the Pastor’s house – which is so tiny and in want of so much – but puts every rupee he has, for the feeding of these kids. His 3 children live with these destitute kids, eat the same food and truly you wouldn’t tell the difference between His kids and the children of home. The tears that have flown down their cheeks have been immeasurable.

If this Pastor has committed so many crimes as accused, why hasn’t the TV channel that brought up this whole thing, interview the kids, when they had them to themselves for one full day at the NCPA?
Why aren’t the kids talking?? Why haven’t they interviewed the Pastor’s wife, sister Mala who never leaves the home and is a 24/7 mum?? Why aren’t they interviewing the house mothers??

The kids are dearly loved, they finally have a real Amma and Thatha they look up to. They are taken in their own bus to school daily and the village kids, get a ride too. They have in-house computer classes, library, and all the O/L and A/L students are sent for private tution classes. Its a shame to read in today’s Sunday Leader that the kids were not sent to school. What rubbish??? I wonder if this person checked the school register before talking…..

Basically what I am trying to tell you is that these kids are not treated like orphans but kids in any normal family.

All this calamity and suffering, was because of a false report.Do these already traumatized kids have to suffer to meet the selfish ends of the adults is my question??
