Serious doubts have been cast on Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith and his political agendas to support Mahinda Rajapaksa at the upcoming elections with the revelation that his niece has been given a political appointment to the Sri Lanka embassy in Paris.
Ruwani Cooray, niece of Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has not passed the foreign service examination nor been recruited to the foreign service through any accepted procedure. However she has been appointed as the second secretary to the Sri Lanka Embassy in France.
Ruwani does not have any relevant qualifications for this appointment other than her relationship to the Cardinal. Earlier Ruwani Cooray was posted to the Sri Lanka Mission in Manila, Philippines on the request of the Cardinal. With the significant role played by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith to ensure the visit of his Holiness the Pope to Sri Lanka his niece has now been given a more opulent posting in Paris.

This is bad news if the information is correct. The catholic church and its followers are supposedly carry on the principles laid down by Christ. The cardinal who is the head of the R.C.Church, also behaves in a manner like ordinary politicians, it would not be good for the church in Srilanka.
There was always suspicion in the minds of the catholics as to why the church heirachy is not appraising Vatican regarding the sudden elections arrangements which is to be held just 5 days before the arrival of the Pope who is the head of the R.C. church representing more than 1.2 billion
People and how unpleasent would it be if some uneasy situation prevailed at the time of his visit.
The ordinary catholics understand the practical situation in the country and would not be disappointed if the visit is postponed but would lose all the faith on heirachy of the church if vatican is not properly advised without any bias.

Cardinal has been purchased by Rajapakse and I am sure when Mahinda Rajapakse visited Vatican he would have definitely donated many millions to Vatican and that must be the reason why Pope changed the age old practice of not visiting a country just before or immediately after a national election. But did the Cardianl ask for this improper appointment? Or perhaps his niece got it on her own, or through other people’s influence or perhaps Rasjapakse thinks that by offering this appointment he can get the Cardinal on his side.

Even if we give the benefit of the doubt to Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith and assume that he had not requested this favour, then he should clear his name and write to the editor with factual information without delay. This is a disgrace to the Church and the entire Catholic community in Sri Lanka. But on the other hand if you look back at the recent events in connection with the Papal visit, which was officially announced on the web site of the Colombo Archdiocese on 29th July this year. Here again, while this notice quoting the Press Office of the Holy sea announced “Welcoming the invitation from the civil authorities and of the Bishops, His Holiness Pope Francis will make an Apostolic Voyage to Sri Lanka from 12th to 15th January”. However, after our President’s visit to Vatican, the same web site changed this version while the official notice continues the earlier position even to date, to support the government’s version of “President officially invited the Pope to visit Sri Lanka” during his visit and even the Vatican’s official statement consequent to the President visit however, did not say anything about President’s Official invitation. Besides if you read Anuradhapua Bishop Andradi’s recent statement to the media it is very clear, that Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith is politically biased towards the President for unknown reason. Therefore it is not totally incorrect to assume that this is the reason.
