Buddhist Monk BBS Gnanasara Eats Pan Fried Monkfish

As an organization the leadership of the Bodu Bala Sena and its Secretary General, Buddhist monk Galagoda Atte Gnanasara are famous for setting controversial trends, such as introducing a new tradition for Buddhist Monks to consume their alms in restaurants.

Monk Gnanasara is pictured here enjoying a “Pan Fried Monkfish” meal at the famous Barefoot Garden Café in the presence of an acquaintance.

GnanasaraThe trendy upmarket garden restaurant Barefoot, states in its website “The Garden café is an oasis in the heart of Colombo and an ideal venue to relax with friends. The blackboard menu displays the daily lunch specials. Try the legendary Black Pork Curry or the notable Spinach Quiche and we also have a fine selection of wines and beers. We have live Jazz every Friday evening and on Sunday afternoons. The famous Colombo Pub Quiz takes place on Wednesdays from 8 pm. The space is also used to host cultural events, private dinners and parties at night”.

It was barely a couple of years ago that Colombo Telegraph uploaded a similar story when a delegation of BBS Monks were pictured enjoying a lavish meal in New York.

Authorities in Sri Lanka then announced plans to draw up new guidelines for donating food to the country’s Buddhist monks amid concerns about their weight and health.

The Health ministry said the faithful, who offer alms as a religious tradition, tended to give food that was too high in fat and sugar and monks were developing preventable health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

“The Medical Research Institute had been asked to prepare menus that could be used for alms givings,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that the new guidelines were to be issued then.

I believe in the BBS version of Buddhism, the monks can have sex as long as they kept their eyes closed during the act. The monks can also drink alcohol as long as they swallow it without tasting it. They are also free to hit anyone who disagrees with them.

“Buddist monks NOT supposed to have children !!!!!!!!!!!”

Officially of course they are not supposed to have children.

The rule applies only to the Buddhist monks however Gnana is Sinhala/Buddhist saffron clad thug hence he is not governed by Vinaya.

Native Miniha, Pardon my ignorance of Buddhist history….but was not the
Great Buddha a married man and had children as well…Union of man with a woman is natural and monks are humans too and are normal men. It would be interesting to learn how they manage to overcome their biological needs.
As we can see in the picture this monk Gnanassara is enjoying a non veg
dish which would increase his metabolism. Gnanassara is not alone as I understand most monks eat not veg specially roast chicken. It is not a matter of eating tasty food but it matters if one goes astray from the
            wisdom and wise Buddhas’ teachings.

I have an extreme dislike for this thug in saffron robes…but technically, there’s nothing wrong in eating meat in Buddhism, according to the Dhammapada, in absolute terms.

        • 5
          1

I don’t think this is right. Karuna takes in all living things. You have to kill before you eat. Some say that they do not kill what is eaten. This is not right. It is killed for them because they eat it. It is not permitted to eat meat both in Buddhism and Hinduism as both treat all life alike. That we do eat meat is just the practice that has grown up. We cannot reconcile it with the tenets of our religion. Christians and Muslims eat meat as they believe that other creatures are created for man. Buddhists and Hindus who believe in Karma and Rebirth do not think that other creatures are any less. So they cannot be killed so that their meat may be consumed.

The BBS guy should get out of his robes, become like the rest of us and eat as much meat and fish as he wants.

sorry to say here, I dont agree with your conceptual myth. I am not a fan of Gnasara thera. Also I dont agree with his lavish life style. But in Buddhist teachings we are not tight with any dicipline which has no logical base. Anyone is allowed to eat anything as far as it doesnt hurt any thing or any one. As far as it is going to help him or her to achieve their supreme goal of Nibbana. But everuone should know taking others life is bad as same thing you like your life as its cause bad karma, which is going against you. In this case he went to restaurant to have his daana or meal before his time , They have serve him this food , he ate! What s wrong with that? Dont try to create iunnecessary impression among other communities as they are directly hitting Buddhist teachings. Buddhist teachings are libaral views of Buddha. They are not bound by any strict principals or rules like BBS saying. Thats the issue.

I’m actually a muslim but I have a lot of respect for Buddhas teachings. Lord Buddha mainly had rules for Bhikkus, not so much for the layman.

According to his teachings in the Dhammapada, the only stipulation against meat is for Bhikkus and that also is only that a Bhikku may not consume the meat of an animal that was specifically killed for the purpose of his consumption. So, technically Gnanasara is wrong here because he has ordered a dish with meat and according to the rule of supply and demand, his order will cause more animals to be killed.

However, if a Bhikku were to accept a dhaana with meat in it, he has the right to consume it (provided it’s within the permissible hours for eating for a Bhikku). A bhikku can not beg, he must eat whatever is offered to him. If meat is offered, Lord Buddha has said that he can consume it if he wishes.

Hm.. Excuse me for my ignorance, but can you enlighten me why they are traditionally supposed to carry a begging bowl and go from house to house if a Buddhist monk is not supposed to beg, as what you say is to be taken as the sacred truth? Or has begging for food gone out of fashion, and what is now in vogue is a feast that is spread out for all the monks collectively, which is now called the ‘Dhanay’.

              • 1
                0

In modern times it may have been labelled a “begging bowl” but that’s not the historically correct word for it.

The bowl is meant for collection of what is offered. To beg is to go and literally “beg” or plead for something. A bhikku is not supposed to do that. In fact, Lord Buddha discouraged begging for the bhikku as well as the lay person.

A bhikku uses a bowl to simply collect whatever is offered to him.

            0

“H” said “absolute terms”. The Buddha ate meat on occasion, but Ponkoh Sivakumaran, you have rightly pointed out that our economic system is different to what prevailed when Gauthama accepted what a hunter offered him.

All that is academic. The question is what do we do to the porcine Gnanasara?

            • 0
              0

True, it just an academic/technical matter.

The best we can do for Gnanasara is to not vote for the political party that this shameful being stands for at the upcoming election.

What is so unusual about this?

I have seen many Muslims eating pork, consuming alcohol and hm.. hm… frequenting the casinos.

        So give gnanissara a break!

        • 5
          2

But the Muslims you would have seen are NOT MONKS and do not pretend to PROTECT THEIR RELIGION. This is the difference.

        • 1
          1

You will make a good politician. Where are you going? Coconuts in my sack. Muslims have nothing to do with this, but are good scapegoats to bring into ridicule, when you can’t take the heat for your buddy types. You are not comparing apples with apples but apples with oranges, literally. But here we are talking Sharona bottles – the Mega types. Get the message?

        • 2
          0

When you speak of Muslims, whom do you mean? People with Muslim names, probably, and, may be, brought up in families that were considered “Muslim”. It is unlikely that they have proclaimed themselves to be Muslims.

In the case of Gnanasara, he has got into Buddhist robes, and masquerades as a monk. Forbidding what he is doing by the law is not going to be easy. Is it not significant, that he has called himself a candidate for the Sinhalese. The Buddha was not a Sinhalese. There may even be a few Tamil Buddhists. Please do not take this as a call for Buddhist proselytization of the Tamil community.

Religion is a personal matter, and one of conviction.

As for what to do with Gnanasara, we should not vote for him. But that is not enough: we must also denounce him.

        • 1
          0

The subject here is about Gnanassara eating out in the open and enjoying a dish of sea food not about Muslims whatever they may eat. Also, living in modern times I cannot find him doing anything to offend his faith. As a human being he has got to eat and what he eats does not matter as long as he did not kill it himself which would then be offending his faith and the
          teachings of Buddhism.

“So ? what is the story here ?”

Sinhala Buddhism Transformed. The Last Transformation was by Monk Mahanama and his lies and imaginations in the Mahawansa.

The Sinhala Buddhist Monks Now receive Dhana, Offerings in 5 Star Restaurants, and the like to eat Monkfish. No wonder they are Fat.

Remember, Buddhas used to have a bowl ti receive offerings.

One good outcome is that , the boys who bring Dhana, Offerings will not be raped.

She sent her grandson to school with the idea of providing him with proper education to make him a good person. The Buddhist monk in charge of the temple asked her to send the child to the temple and she sent him there because they were poor. There was no possibility for them to pay the money for tuition fees. That was the reason why they sent the boy to the temple school. When the child began to refuse going to the temple school so adamantly, grandmother had to look for the reason. It was then only that she discovered that the child who was sent to learn good behavior, ethics and Buddha’s Dharma from the monk had in fact been abused by the monk.

Story here is how can a saint monk eat monk fish in an expensive restaurant.

This Gnasara is a big fat monk and he should go on hunger strike or fast to reduce his weight to get his brain functioning properly.

No I disagree, robes do not a monk make, Buddhist renunciation is not in the robe worn.Renunciation is an attitude of a balanced mind a saint would have.Obviously Gandasara’s mind is brutal, and unbalanced and that is known by the way he talks to reveal his ignorance, volatile anger, intolerance and a host of many other of his negative depravities.

Visiting for Dhana to a restaurant is not a prohibition and eat what is offered.
but ordering of any food animal flesh is not approved.

As Ganddhassaara is not considered as a Buddhist monk, he can eat any shit.

I condemn the BBS. But there is no premise for a story here. This has been happening forever in SL. Go to any dhana in cities or villages, they are more like wedding banquets these days.

Come to think of it, this is certainly keeping in line with most “news” items which appear in CT.

This shows the true colors of CT . The site it filled with people with no other agenda than hatred for Buddhists and fakes who act like they are Sinhalese Buddhists with fake names as cloaks .

From the time I was a child this is nothing new . and if a person bought the dana a priest has been told by the Religion to not refuse . and While there is the sila to never kill , there is no edict to not eat a meal of any particular type .

If anything the mahanayakes who travel around in luxury are against the religion than this man . and just because there are criminals in the robe as there were in Buddhas time it in no way takes away from the sangha , just like have pedophile priests in the catholic faith does not take away from every priest of that faith .

Abhaya: Now I understand why Native Vedda calls you Ab-blah-blah-ya.

Buddhism in Sri Lanka is a travesty of what the Buddha preached. And guys like you who have abandoned the country for the US and preach to CT readers about patriotism, not to mention have heroes like this fake monk who instigates violence and murder, should crawl under the rock from where you emerged until you put your money where your mouth is and get back here.

What’s so wrong with Sri Lanka that you chose to abandon it?

        Fake patriot!

@ Abhaya you can shout yourself to glory that this is ok but its not

A monk is supposed to lead an austere life (of course if they dont want to then they must leave the robes )

BBS was always acting like saints but look at this chap

You say that from the time you were small this has been happening in SL if so then SOMETHING IS REALLY WRONG WITH BUDDHISM IN SL

Next if there is a picture of a monk in a massage parlour or a brothel you will say ah thats normal

the more you defend such actions the more you look like a silly fellow!

Buddhism especially the sihala buddhists are targeted to denigrate the religion and psychologically suppress the community. Whilst this propaganda is going on the sinhala buddhists are economically ethnically cleansed from colombo, state land is blatantly given to minorities buddhist archeological sites re destroyed etc. With regards to the monk eating fish I can’t see any problem. Do we have photographs of christian priests eating in restaurants. Come off it , It is this kind of propaganda that is the cause of Bodu Bala.

Monks are not supposed to physically touch money nor have any indirect control over it. So how many genuine monks do you think there are in the country?

Buddha ate meat … Buddhism doesnt stop u from eating meat .. its the Jain influence in Buddhism that created the notion of not eating meat … it was actually the Devaddtha who wanted Buddha to say that buddhist shouldt eat meat … that was the biggest disagreement between buddha and devadatha …. Budha said that if a poor man gives me meat if he is a meat seller and that all he has to give, then i shell not refuse his offering

    Abhaya.

I agree.Buddhism should not be the scapegoat for the antics of this particular monk.
When Somarama stood in the dock for the murder of SWRD, Late Justice T.S.Fernando sentencing to the gallows had remarked that there was an element of goodness in Somarama who had by then removed his monks robes and wore civilian clothes. He did not want to denigrate Buddhism.

It looks more like fried in batter rather than pan fried.

It is probably either a piece of Cod or Shark.

Never seen Monk Fish in Srilnaka, unless they catch them along Mullative Coast which had been out of bounds to us for a long time.

Monks eating in restaurants is a good thing. They can have their meals when they really feel hungry.

In fact I saw a couple in the KFC on Marine Drive the other day, having Chips. And it was around 4 in the afternoon.

I am not sure they are Srilankan or any other Therawada from our neighbourhood.

UNP monks in Colombo have even Buffet Daanes now, where Poodle Club Ladies bring low Cholestorol, Low Fat , lean Chicken Breast Fillets pan fried in Olive Oil with a bit of Herbs , Garlic and freshly ground Schichuan Pepper.

While the Monks indulge in their herby chicken in Colombo Seven, the Poodle Ladies are in the Marquee enjoying their own Buffet.

Talking about how their kiddies are doing in London, Melbourne and Toronto.

And how the husbands go for new models so often. I mean the Mercedez and the Beamers..

Is it called Monkfish because Buddhist priests are supposed to eat them. Thunnoth Kanuva is the motto when it comes to eating beef.

A monk is supposed to live a life of self-restraint and meditation. If he cannot, he is free to disrobe. Does this thug behave like a proper monk? He wants to have both the respect given to a monk as well as the life of a layman (and part-time criminal).
Only the state registration and control of all who wear the robe will prevent scum like Mr Gnanasara abusing it.

Maybe, Sinhala Buddhism is not true Buddhism. It is mixed with the animism of kattadiyas. In fact, Gnanasara looks more like a kattadiya than a Buddhist monk. Like Mahavamsa Buddhism which justified the killing of Tamils, it is okay to kill and eat fish or cattle in Sinhala Buddhism. It is okay to kill people too. After all, they killed 70, 000 of their own kids during the JVP riots. They they killed over 100,000 at Mullivaikal. The place from which the Amarapura Nikaya hails from-Burma_ is the killing fields of the Rohingyas. So, it is okay to eat a couple of fish meals and some beef whenever it pleases the hammuduruwo. Why worry?

There are things that we know. There are things that we dont know and still trying to learn. Using mere words doesnt make any sense. You know nothing about buddhism and you also know nothing about Hinduism.

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know.

Lets call a spade a spade. In Sri Lanka these days, Buddhist monks don’t live by the basic precepts of Buddhism.

They indulge in politics and in most cases are responsible for precipitating hatred between communities. This to me is the opposite to the teaching of the Buddha.

What gnanasara is seen to be doing is, enjoying himself in the pleasures of the world which is a contradiction, because on one hand he says he is fighting for Buddhism at the expense of minorities while on the other hand he is seen to be enjoying himself in a high brow restaurant which in deed is very un-Buddhist like for a monk.

In other words CT is exposing this hypocrite for what he is. The next thing you know he has a pistol hidden under his robe. To me this man is simply a thug with a saffron robe. He is doing a great dis-service to Buddhism.

@slayer, poor converts are there, name sake also called hypocrites if a muslim named man eats scavenging animal’s meat for taste/bite and consumes liquor, on that moment onwards he siezed to be a muslim, however new converts can be pardoned for their absent minded weak faith! When you keep open bars how drunken driving and the resultant deaths escape complicity?… but in anti terror law complicity is punished severely, a human bomb’s accomplices are not released on parole even! Please don’t judge by name. I don’t care anyone eating anything for survival if they don’t infect others with brain fever, sars, swine flu and mers etc! Islam bashing often turns to Islamophobia in a jiffy, why?

Religious leaders are expected to lead an exemplary, yet, simple & pious life. Particularly in Buddhism where Buddha preached a ‘middle path’ to his followers, this exhibition of opulent living as implied by having lunch in a trendy restaurant, is pure hypocrisy. A Buddhist monk takes up robes because of his faith in Buddha & intends to follow his footsteps as the first step towards achieving Nirvana by giving up material wealth. We remain as laymen because we are unable to make that sacrifice, therefore, a true Buddhist monks needs to be respected. To such a person, hatred is replaced with compassion & greed in any form is non existent as it is the very thing he wants to distance himself with. That is my perception but I may be wrong as this monk (along with so many other monks in SL), seem to have rewritten the rule book with their own ideology. However, when I see the monks at a monastery near where I live in UK, who are predominately from Western countries, my faith in the religion is restored. Perhaps it is the rich ‘dayakayas’ in SL, who, in their misguided belief that the most meritorious deed is to lavish the sanga in every way, are to be blamed. I am sure this monk could have requested a vegetarian option if he so wished.
