Chathurika Commences Kite-Flying By Flying Kites

Chathurika Sirisena who went in to hiding without even providing an explanation for her previous public stunts when using public servants and police officials to accompany her on her personal campaigns recommenced her operations by taking part at the Sri Lanka National Kite Festival held at Galle Face Green on the 11th of October 2015.

Subsequently on the following day President Maithripala Sirisena’s daughter Chathu was invited by Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya in Gampaha, as the chief guest where the girl’s school celebrated World Teachers and World Children’s day. Chathu was incidentally a past pupil of the school.

Chathurika SirisenaOn both occasions Chathurika was once again provided with Presidential Security Division officers to attend these privately invited functions.

Besides many PSD officers accompanying her on both visits, the same lady PSD officer was seen wearing a green shirt and black trousers at the kite festival and white shirt and black trousers at the school event.

Coincidentally the term ‘Kite-Flying’ is a practice used by politicians to test the media response prior to embarking on a project.

Chathrurika the aspiring politician could not have chosen a better event to recommence her private campaign.

President Maithripala Sirisena’s daughter Chathu received muck flak earlier, when she visited villages in the Polonnaruwa District accompanied by government servants and police officers when she went on a private fact finding mission to listen to the grievances of the common man. She was televised during these visits, explaining to the people that she had not brought all these government servants on a false pretext but rather to share her dad’s dreams and future plans to the rural folk.

President Sirisena’s popularity took a nosedive as recent as last month, when he took his son Daham Sirisena to the United Nations General Assembly in the United States of America and was made to sit with all state dignitaries during sessions.

At this event it was reported that the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of the Swiss Confederation Simonetta Sommaruga had the rare opportunity of shaking Daham Sirisena’s hand.

Strangely even the President’s Media Unit attempted to cover this up by photo shopping out the young Sirisena in their official press releases.

During the Presidential Election campaign earlier, President Sirisena publicly announced that one of the main reasons he was breaking away from the previous Rajapaksa regime was due to family nepotism.

However barely two weeks after being sworn in as President, he went on to appoint his brother Kumarasinghe Sirisena as the Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom.

“Many of those who voted President Sirisena into power, felt deceived by this no sooner he assumed office. Now his children Chathurika and Daham have begun exploiting their daddy’s presidential powers” said a political activist.Chathurika SirisenaChathurika SirisenaChathurika SirisenaChathurika SirisenaChathurika Sirisena

If CT can get all these photos, I am sure the main media has a load of it. They all have become monsoon sailers. They all have learned to live with the South Asian “Trade Winds”. Even if the New King is not thinking of crowning himself, the Lankawe’s footlicking media will not let him go. But, it is true before the death of the public news reporting of the media took place, in 1970s, during the years when the Queen of Attanagalla, Sirimavo on the throne, Daily News published the obituary of “Death of Democracy”. The exit for the media from news reporting to jump into the emperors-empresses’ fame singing was not so easy. It was like Tamils’ government service, slow and painful, long suffered but sure and never again retuning death. It is gone!

It is a peculiar society the Sinhala intellectuals are. It is difficult to understands its commonsensical ability. They are like the master’s hunting dogs. Serve for the Master! When he/she points out to go and catch the Tamils, they do it and bring the kill for the masters’ food(vote). Never something for themselves. Other than successfully conducting pogroms and looting for daily living, under the guidance and leadership of like the eminent, world renowned leaders like Gunadasa Amarasekara, these crowd has not established any self identity speciality. For more than two centuries, the time the British took over the country, this crowd is struggling to learn to understand what is democracy means. But still could not. Live as the hunting dogs at the master’s foot.

Long Live Lankawe’s dictatorial, oligarchy family business.

A chief guest should be someone with qualifications, skills and experience to share with students. Someone who can be a ROLE MODEL and EDUCATE students on a subject. Not kite flyers!

The point is: what are her qualifications to be a chief guest at a girl’s school? Does she have a degree? Is she educated?

Now all politicians should be required to have a degree since today Sri Lanka has free education (unlike in the time of D.S. or Dudley Sewnanayake) If you do not have a degree it shows that you were not intelligent enough to enter a university and become educated in order to serve people. In the modern world unlike in colonial times politicians need to be educated and skilled.

The minimum qualification of a degree from a recognized university should be a requirement to run for any political party. New standards and minimum qualifications are needed today to clean up rotten and corrupt political culture in Sri Lanka,

Sinhala masses have a feudal mentality and worship ignorant politicians and their stupider off spring it seems!

Not having a degree is lot better than cheating exams and get administrators of age old respected institutions to do the role of prostitute give bogus qualifications to POLITICAS AND THEIR SONS.

I am now convinced that there are many “Journalists” at CT whose IQs and well below 79 with negative scores.

Flying a kite and recognizing the skills of youngsters is great. hey probably made their own kites with skill and understood a good degree of aerodynamics. Chatrukia should be commended for her support for such endeavors.

        Totally agree with Paddy.

It is clear to me, there is an uncalled for vendetta against some members of the President’s family.

This presidential daughter didn’t barge in, uninvited. Suggest CT finds fault with the relevant persons concerned.

Really pathetic and petty thinking journalistic piece, if you ask me.

We never thought once a website for intellectual discussion CT will go down to this level. Is this really valuable news or anything to discuss about? Of course President’s family should have security same as previously. Please let us know whether there were any ambulances also going behind them. Then that is news.

NV, your comment below is ironic, unfair and unreasonable.

Merely to relieve you of your boredom or provide entertainment for some, should an innocent person be targeted?

The butt end of the CT’s criticism in the article in question is the daughter of the President, who accepted an invitation and discharged her obligation. That is all. She didn’t barge in.

In all of this, it is ironic that people appear already having forgotten what prevailed 10 months before.

          Definitely surprised and disappointed.

When family members of politicians come out in public , obviously they become fair game .
For example I am yet to see anyone critisizing the Presidents wife for that matter the reason being is she stays away from the limelight. As the saying goes if you can’t handle the heat then stay out of the kitchen.

This is an absurd article sponsored by Colombo Telegraph.

I wonder what type of joker wrote this Article. She is the daughter of the President, that makes her a celebrity of many sorts amongst the rural folks. The fact that she is using her notoriety to engage in some good work should be praised…..this is not nepotism, this is the President’s daughter trying to understand problems at a grassroot level and helping her dad find solutions….good for her, keep it up.

Just we need to hinder anything and everything to let presidential offpsrings or anyone abusing rights of the lanken folks. Gone were the days, that the nation (part of nation – most stupidest part) allowed Rajapkshe offsprings to do whatever they thought of right. That deteriorated the society to the levels that we go tto see today, where almost every day we hear about murders of young ones of innocient people sometimes for no reason. We had had a past where the peopel of this country respected the prevailing laws and dignified life – but that to have turned to most brutal crime friendly society – has caused reasons for the crimes hearing today.

This is a ridiculous article !! What the reporter is suggesting is that the children of a President should not have a life !! The school where Chathuri studied invites her for a function, she goes there and that makes news suitable to condemn ?? NO. And she has to be accompanied by a security detachment as she can always be a target for all kinds of people. When will we move away from all this rubbishy articles that merely feeds the radicals?

However, we perfectly feel that the move of current president is not the same as before the Jan 8th.

Nepotism starts like this and needs to be nipped in the bud. The kite-flying illustration is also very appropriate and funny too. Before long we who voted Sirisena in will all be up in the sky and flown like kites ourselves by these folk. Then the string will be truly in their hands and they will be flying us how they wish. God bless this country……phew!

    CT,

    Absolutely unfair!

President’s family is celebrity and is worthy of State’s protection, even if not holding an official positions.

This country has had princelings appointed to, promoted to and accredited to by the stroke of a pen of the King to so many high level official statuses with absolutely no qualifications. Examples: (a) Can’t-pass GCE O/L ‘s sent for Master’s and PhD’s (b)Can’t-pass one term of legal courses in the corner-shop institution in London given Distinguished First Class Honour with all time-high results, with connivance from no less than the VC, (c) Not-qualified for Cadet training absorbed to Official ranks and awarded distinguished service only because of servile, bootlicking Commanders, (d) hooligans made Captain of Rugby teams with no qualification to even clean & shine rugby balls!

What exactly is the author’s problem if the President’s daughter gets invited to be the chief guest at a National Kite festival – she was not awarded Kite-Champion ward — was she? What if her Alma Mater invites her as chief guest to officiate a function of school children – the school is not appointing her the Principal with no qualification – is it?

This is not just unfair and distracting but seems done with the intention of offsetting the increasing heat the former princelings are coming under with the revelations of possible murder charges, illicit financial dealings and money laundering!

Is the author inventing and scrapping the bottom to fish for mud that he/she is having difficulty finding?

    • 5

      Kumar R.

“What exactly is the author’s problem if the President’s daughter gets invited to be the chief guest at a National Kite festival”

      No problem.

Would she be invited to any function on her own merit if she is not a member of the first family?

Who is going to benefit from the President by maintaining a back channel?

      • 2
        0

Isn’t it common and customary to invite the first lady as chief guest for functions? Wasn’t Diana invited frequently to do such honours? Couldn’t you then challenge whether they would be invited if they were not married to the President or Prince, as in the case of Diana? Are they being invited on their own merits or because of their personal relationship? Does that automatically lead to “back-channel” favours?

Objective challenges, as in the case of the son being taken to official events in the UN instead of officials who truly could have contributed to the discussions are legitimate. But challenges should not be based on mischief, revenge or paranoia!

        • 1
          2

          Kumar R.

Are we discussing our political culture or that of the UK? Remember UK press is much more robust and proactive than that in this island. It can make or break a person, party or the Royal family. The institution of Royalty has a unique place in the UK. One cannot even begin to compare it to any institution here. Please let Diana rest in peace.

Let me tell you a true story I happened to know.

Few years ago Namal visited a school in Vanni. The school was renovated just a few weeks ago by a group of good hearted old students of a Jaffna popular school. Namal gate crashed the school uninvited. Few hours before his arrival, a team of army men entered the school to secure the area. As part of the security measures they broke open the newly replaced ceiling.

Namal brought with him some cheap note books, pencils, erasers, … distributed among the children and left. It cost the school Rs 75,000 to mend the damage. You guessed it right, neither Namal nor the Military men reimbursed the cost to the school.

The political brats should keep out of all the things they do out of goodness of their heart.

            NV,

            Please reread what you asked:

“Would she be invited to any function on her own merit if she is not a member of the first family?”

Did that question not get answered? Do you think the wives of heads of state (Presidents, Prime Ministers, Kings, Princes) are invited to host functions on their own merits?

As for your insinuation — it is as an extended example of Heads of State or “first family” as you state that I mentioned the British Royalty — not to divert discussion from our political culture to that of UK as you want to mischievously imply. Was that for want of a valid defence — Is that because you had no answer as to why it is O.K. to celebrate a wife without her own merit, but it is not O.K. to celebrate a daughter in a similar manner. Why would honouring the daughter risk “back channels” but honouring the wife would not? No red herring-ing please!

Native, if she was a “common” person, she probably would not be invited. You are right. Only the distinguished are invited for functions: why is the Queen of England and the Royalty so involved in functions as well as our own politicos, good and bad?!

Chathurika is enjoying the new sudden popularity of the fawning masses and is not to be blamed, I feel.
She is new to the game and will be soon misled by those who wish to score political points for their own benefit.

Please! What seems to be the issue here? Is Ms. Sirisena excluded from public life or any ambitions of her own? Does she need to apologize for her father or mother?

She is very obviously playing the role her Mum should play but her family has chosen this path, and we should learn to respect their choice.

It appears some of us want to see everything through political lenses and therefore everybody and anything is subject to insults and criticism.

Personally, I admire how she is presenting herself compared to the baila dancing in the previous regime. She is an example for the youngsters in the audience to look up to, despite the absurd comments some make in social media.

If it was not so easy to offer comments on line, I doubt the postage would be spent to mail a letter to the editor.

It is also a reflection on the priorities of CT’s editors. Of course the convenient cover story is ‘in the public’s interest’.

      3

“What seems to be the issue here? “
The school she studied had lost the Alumni List until this week.

“She is very obviously playing the role her Mum should play but her family has chosen this path,”
Why is that? There is some problems with her mom? Is her mom is a Tamil?

“It appears some of us want to see everything through political lenses”
Somebody attempts to explain everything as it just “The crow sat sat on it that is why the Palmyra Fruit fell down”> Certainly that is good enough for Sinhala Modaya. Can you tell

“She is an example for the youngsters”. You mean youngsters should wait until their father King becomes the New King? How many Royal kids are out in the Sinhala Intellectual society?

“If it was not so easy to offer comments on line, I doubt the postage would be spent to mail a letter to the editor.” You may don’t need a stamp. Like in the Brother Prince era, probably the New Princess is calling and telling the Editors to publish your comments?

“It is also a reflection on the priorities of CT’s editors.” You have an objection, if the New King happened to see the Old King’s path?

Guys be reasonable. Every VVIP’s children get protective details. LTTE terrorists are not the only threat, but come on be reasonable. The President probably has lots of rivals and enemies. Even during peaceful times high profile VVIP’S kids get protection in almost any nation.

That’s the only point I want to make. I’m not talking about good governance or anything. Look how simple the president was when his own brother was murdered. He didn’t drag the killer out or try to get him killed. I’m not a sycophantic supporter of anyone. US presidential security protects the wife and kids too . Again I want to say I am ONLY talking about the security aspect. Even General Fonseka’s kids were provided security too and that was correct too. Children inevitably go into politics in lots of nations. Pierre Trudeau’s son is running for PM of Canada. Hillary is running. Hon. Sajith Premedasa is a respected elected leader m people will vote and decide.

  • 8

I agree with those who say CT is kind of overplaying this issue. Even in the West, the President’s family, especially the first lady, is invited to such functions. In President Sirisena’s case, it seems the first lady is not comfortable attending such functions, so he is allowing his children to assume that role. And some of it is legitimately supported by taxpayer funds. I don’t see why the public should make a lot of fuss about it. It is possible the children will use these events to their political advantage in the future, but that happens in many other countries as well.

There are bigger issues that the current regime has to address, such as prosecuting seriously corrupt people and criminals, including war criminals pursuant to the UNHRC resolution, releasing unfairly incarcerated prisoners, releasing HSZ lands, making constitutional changes and coming up with a political solution while the TNA still has leaders who are willing to cooperate, and the UNP-SLFP are still part of a national government. In two years, the parties may go their separate ways, and it will be hard to accomplish anything serious legislatively. And Sampanthan is getting too old; who knows what kind of ailments he might face; he may retire from politics and it may become harder for other TNA leaders to persuade people to accept certain solutions. So there is no time to waste, and there should be pressure on the current regime to stay on those issues. A focus on minor issues like this will detract from those serious issues.

CT; It is better to take a look at what the commentators are telling you. In my opinion too, there is some secretive, underhand manipulations going on to tarnish your image. There is simply no necessity to send a photographer to cover the movements of daughter and son of the President to every nook and corner. You correctly did it in the case of both the daughter and the son earlier; but this event is not at all for the general public to be concerned. She is invited as a past student and what she does there; whether she sent a kite up in the air or simply danced around is not of any importance to the general public. After all they too need space to live a life of their own, provided that they do not live out of the public funds and do no harm to the public image of the Presidency. No doubt, you are giving a free hand and an opportunity to express their own independent opinion on matters brought into this forum; but that should not be exploited by any one to sling mud at every opportunity to tarnish the image of this web page or any other. Hopefully this situation will be corrected and move on as usual. Thank you.

    Well, it worked.

New King can ask for the third term! That is how the Sinhala Intellectual commentators conclusion coming after see the Princess called them to “fly a kite”.

What happened to the investigation she made earlier? Has it flew in the wind. Or is that another Royal government’s “Commission Report”?

May I know if this New Princess ready to go to a prison ask the people why they are held there?

Is that against Daddy King’s royal Government’s death penalty?

Daddy King, to win the election, made propaganda that LTTE tried on 7 times. Now the Tamil Media’s reports say Pillayan had said it was not LTTE, it was he by the Old King’s request. Has so far New King commented on that. Is that because New And Old Kings have files on each other? But has not worried about that, he has said that a media is the one trying to destroy him!

      Well received Friend.

I have an idea to deal with it.

Use the UNHRC resolution to investigate only Tamils. List all the names you want living outside. Find out an Island in the North. Say Punkkuduthivu, Karai thivu, Katchchathivu, Mannar, Velani, Saravanai….. Then, without anybody knowing give it to China to develop it as a port city with full Chinese sovereignty. When everything is on firm grip and nobody can reverse it, call Sec.Kerry and tell if the Tamils refugees status cancelled and not extradition taking place Chinese will go ahead the plan. Before Sec.Kerry go out of his seat in an year, he will do that. That is what called “Transitional Justice”. Instead of that, Old King proscribed 14 organization and 350 People. None of the western countries extradited anybody. Because there was no leverage. Poor Lankawe!

With that, I would recommend you to investigate at least one Sri Lankan with all the Tamils you want. A faithless notorious dupe master! A wild life which killed and ate the one who saved its life. Investigate it and at least put its effigy on the renewed gallows. It is not Sinhalese. It is not foreigner. It is not Buddhist. It is not not Christian. A wild animal named as Don Stephen. That was the one put the LankaWe to this path. 65 years have passed. No light out of this dark tunnel. None like that one should ever appear on any soil in the world.

C’on CT, I cannot see anything wrong here.

She is visiting her old school, taking part in activities such as kite-flying, may be a chief guest because she is not only a past pupil but she also happens to be the daughter of the President, if the school invited her in that capacity then it is not her fault. Definitely the President and his direct family should be provided with security (Gota’s killing force is still active). Please do not compare the Sirisenas with the Rajapakshes, there is a huge difference.

“Please do not compare the Sirisenas with the Rajapakshes, there is a huge difference.”

Where is the Difference ??? Show Us !

I see no difference. The Presidential Family is Doing the Grand. Friends of the Administration are being appointed thru the back-door to plum positions

The only difference is one’s name is Rajapakse and other one is Sirisena

Treating children of VVIP as honored guests seems to be new Rajapaske Sirisena era Gamey tradition of worship and sycophancy. Anura Bandaranaike and his sisters were NEVER invited to their old schools just because they were the PM’s children. Anura only got invited once he became a politician. Chandrika madam only was invited to St. Bridget’s after she became President and set a record not matched in majority. So they were not invited to be chief guests. Hon JRJ’s son was never invited to be a chief guest and none of those people demanded or expected or wished to be invited. Ranil and his brothers are the most low key people in Colombo. I think only instance of a President’s son being recognized as asked to come sit on stage with his father was Ranasinghe Premedasa’s son Sajith Sir by a backside kissing Royal College Principal probably too scared to lose his head during that crazy man’s Presidency. It changed after Hon. Rajapakse. On the other hand, His Excellency’s wife seems like a reluctant stay at home housewife who is not comfortable in the limelight. So someone in the household has to be seen at these functions. Now why the girl’s old school invited her I am not sure why; but I am sure Pandam kaarayas /Lantern Bearers and gamarala Sinhala speaking Principals and Iskool masters probably thought it is the best way to get some attention to an unheard of Sinhala Buddhist school. I cannot think of any time Ranil’s brothers or CBK’s children were invited to be chief guests or be active in politics. Hon JRJ’s son Ravi had too much class. Only Madam Premedasa was the odd one out but everyone knew she suffered from an inferiority complex over Mrs B. Just thinking aloud

My honest feeling is just leave this young lady alone. She cannot be divorced of the fact she is the President’s daughter, and rightfully she enjoys a little privileges being the daughter of the President.

We do enjoy certain privileges being our father’s son / daughter and get some concessions from the institution / department our parent works, and a father working in the corporative shop will entitle his family to buy at cost price. This concessions happens to every family member. Certainly there are limits and if the we stick to the limits then no one should make issues out of it. So President’s daughter too has her own rights for her privileges and I feel grazing a kite flying festival is not overstepping her position. In fact people would have appreciated her presence.

Dear C.T. please leave the silly escapades of this young girl alone. She is trying to be a “Goody Goody two shoes”She to me is a pretty little lass who wants to get some publicity. So what? she certainly is better than those thugs and crooks and fools that were the offspring of the Medamulana Buffalo,. ‘Right On Girl”Go fly Kites or fondle oldies and Babies, This is better than thuggery on beaches, or Night Clubs or Putting on a Boru show at the United Nations that your brother indulged in. Take this kid next on your International Tamashas, She is worth more than .MARA’s massive delegations of Hairdressers, Buth curry Cooks, and general hangers on including ex Wharf Clerks that Spent the poor taxpayers money on Porno Films, Expensive gourmet food and Wines and of course the Tarts that go with it.Enough of this C.T. We had had enough of Yahapalanaya. They are all in the game. Please give us some Kurrakan Pittu for us to choke on.With some Medamulana Mee Kiri with a lot of Hakuru to sweeten or apetite for scandals.

CT, you have definitely overstepped the line, cooked your own bloody goose, and shat on your own doorstep. You have proved to all and sundry that a poisoned pen is a horrible weapon in the wrong hands and worse than a murderers sword. I hope this will teach you to be more aware of the ethics of good journalism and not trot out gutter type writings for your readers. You have lost all credibility as an unbiased news site. You have in fact insulted your readers by churning out this puerile piece. Shame on you !
