Following Landslide Win In LG Elections Mahinda Wants Opposition Leader’s Post And Chairmanship Of SLFP

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) scored a landslide victory in the local government elections concluded yesterday.

The extraordinary slowness of releasing results notwithstanding it is now clear that the SLPP have won the majority of seats in more than 250 local government bodies while securing more than 50% of the total votes cast in areas outside those with Tamil or Muslim majorities. The United National Party stands second with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the coalition it leads, the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) a distant third, followed by the Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).

Dismissing talk of taking over the Premiership, former President and the virtual leader of the SLPP Mahinda Rajapaksa pointed out that this was a local government and not parliamentary election. However he has stated that the Government should table a special bill in Parliament to enable its dissolution and the holding of fresh elections in a context where it is clearly lost the confidence of the people.

Following the apparent landslide victory Rajapaksa urged supporters to ‘celebrate peacefully and with restraint.’ The following is a statement released to the media by Rajapaksa:

“Reports coming in from all corners of the island, indicate that the Sri Lanka PodujanaPeramuna is heading for a historic victory at the local government elections. I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to the voting public of Sri Lanka who have reposed their trust in us, and made this victory possible. The opposition has been able to achieve this victory amidst unprecedented persecution and harassment.

“Despite the personal harassment they may have had to face over the past three years, I earnestly request all those who contested under the Sri Lanka PodujanaPeramuna to celebrate this hard won victory peacefully and with restraint and in a manner that will not inconvenience the defeated side. Members of the SLPP should be mindful that such is the way we should show our appreciation to the voting public of Sri Lanka.

“Victory to all Sri Lankans!

“May the blessings of the Triple Gem be upon you.”

Rajapaksa has also stated elsewhere that since the anti-government vote was secured by the SLPP the Joint Opposition should be given the Opposition Leader’s post. He further stated that he was prepared to accept it. SLPP sources also stated that Rajapaksa had expressed the opinion that he should be reinstated as Chairman of the SLFP.

Meanwhile, according to unconfirmed reports President Maithripala Sirisena, whose party suffered a humiliating defeat, is said to have shunned his advisors and instead had a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Why Opposition Leader? Mahinda should be the PM.

Dayan – this is a local gov election. on what grounds should he be the PM?

      Dayan,
I understand you are capable of knowing the difference between parliamentary election and local government election. This is not presidential or parliamentary election to be President or Prime Minister or Opposition leader. Wait till the time (2020) comes. This election did not change anything. In the 2015 Presidential election Mahinda got 47.58%. So far, the SLPP did not reach over 50%. Now the competition for power between Mahinda and the rest.

Are you inhaling something illegal Dr. DJ? Show us how MR can get 113 seats in the Parliament. UNP has 106, TNA has 16, JVP has 6. So please explain why MR should be PM?

We voted for SLPP not because we wanted culverts but because we DO NOT WANT any new constitution or any change or anymore devolution.

Mahinda should not betray us. Otherwise he gets what he got in 2015.

We killed the new constitution and we are very proud about it!

      Dr. Dayan,

Yes, he should become PM actually. But then the UNP will still persist, unless another coalition can be created. Let’s hope the UNP is gotten once and for all, and Rajapaksa becomes president!

But SLPP is not in parliament yet!

Dayan, I under-estimated you and your prediction (you got lucky once), and for that I offer you my apologies.

However, it sounds quite silly to put in a pitch for MR to become PM, based on LG elections, even if the SLPP won handsomely. Even as a pseudo-intellectual you should have figured out that the SLPP won not because they were more credible, but because the people wished to remind the UNP and SLFP that they are shilly-shallying and prevaricating with respect to prosecuting the alleged crimes of the previous buggers.

Can someone please tell us why theLG elections must be ‘affiliated’ with party politics? How uncool is that? I don’t this happens anywhere else in the world, although wil stand to be corrected if given credible evidence-based information to the contrary.

This election was thrown to give false hope to the Rajapaksas Criminal Network!?

Now the criminals have got bold and come out and exposed themselves.

Black Money is being tracked with each move they make.

The UNP has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. All indications are that the present regime has failed to convince the people that they will live up to their promises, and do what’s right for the people of Sri Lanka. People have forgotten the era of white vans, and journalists being killed or missing, and it seems the present regime has failed to remind them about it.

The results is a good lesson. UNP as a single party did as expected and TNA held its own. The loser is Sirisena and he deserved it. He brought in all the crooks into govt and then sabotaged all investigations on the last govt crooks and murders. He tried to cover it up by calling for a Bond commission just before the election and made a stupid move on the “security guard” at the UK embassy.

If the current leaders honestly follow Yahapalana, based on the peoples wishes, they should hand over the leadership of the SLFP and request the Parliament to select a leader of the opposition.

With regards to the vote itself when people vote for known rogues from ANY PARTY they cannot later blame politicians for ruining their country. Those people who voted for those rogues will be responsible for any repercussions.

He cannot be the Opposition leader, while still a member of the SLFP as its part of the govt. He and the rest of his cronies will have to quit SLFP and join the Sri Lanka Pimps and Prostitutes.

The truth may be little bit different. People have views about the final outcome. the president had been informed that Hora chanda had been added to many boxes. How ever Mahinda Rajapakse had said, only in KirimatiaRA, about 2000 votes may have been added. Ranil also had thought he would lose. As he won some locals he thinks some thing is wrong. People have seen hidden boxes in Cemeteries, Along the Mahaweli river sides, a mong tea bushes. that is in short.

This was a protest vote to send a signal to this Coalition Government for failure to take action against the Rajapaksas Criminal Network…

Take action against them as you promised in the 2015 elections if not this is the future…

This is what you get for protecting them…

Sri Lankans have spoken! Now the UN, foreign governments, busybody ambassadors / high commissioners must stop sticking their noses into Sri Lanka’s affairs. Sri Lanka is a sovereign state,
they must realize it and respect it.

Enough of Tamil and Muslim parties. Dissolve all the minority parties as well.

There is always two sides to a coin. International community should look at this as minorities will never get justice with any form of local system and get involved and take this international.
Sri Lanka is not capable of administering fair justice on its own.

Mahinda Rajapakse wanted to show the female politician that I made it again. but he changed bis mind because he has a challenge. He did not win the country only the local bodies. After recounting the final out come may be different. JVP result are disapointing. SLFP/UPFA lost because they were too divided. Because of that some SLFP ministers may join SLPP.

    One truth and one lie.

He correctly and rightfully said the Parliamentary group should be the opposition. This was a damning referendum on the UNP and Sirisena both. Facts are that the Government wanted to have the elections on one day and delayed them thinking it will benefit them. That trick boomeranged.

It is the SLFP leaders shell shocked who offered him the SLFP chairmanship. So MR DID NOT DEMAND SLFP leadership. He is correct in saying the largest opposition groups has to be the Opposition and not a racist segregationist useless Minority party who only represents the interest of Tigers and other Tamils.

    Verify facts first please.

Even an above average political campaigner wouldn’t have thought of what Mr Suren Surendran and his LTTE mob in East London provided to Pohottuwa the LOTUS Party.
Mr Surendran’s mentors Dr Ranil and Mr Mangi didn’t waste any time either, giving a Free Kick too by banning the War Hero new Brigadier from his new job London..
And Mr Sampathar also expressed his affection for the Pohottuwa by demanding Dr Ranil present his Vellala Eelaam aka New Constitution no later than next week .
And ask our inhabitants to tick it off before they do their Xmas Shopping.
    How cool is that?.
Wonder how many votes did Mr dampathar and his Vellala mates collect for the ITAK….

What I basically see here is a playback of The Presidential election result ,but unlike Dayan suggests , SLPP has not replaced UNP ,on the contrary ,it has almost wiped out SLFP ,that is the reality .
And Mahinda Rajaoakshe now wants to migrate to SLFP leadership via The SLPP voter base .
Because most probably if his proxy runs for Presidential election ,he can use the same strategy his Vote block as opposition ,but if the UNP and others form an alliance ,still the chances of his presidential candidate loosing even by a thin margin is greater. So he wants the government to call for general election. And he believes that way he is more sure of beating Ranil to PM post .possibilities are many ..
In reality no real winners .
The Voters seem to have attained enlightenment at last

      RG:
Full blame should go to My3 he played the short game. He thought he will get some UNP votes by bringing the Bond Commission but it backfired.
Ranil should now force AG to press charges based on the commission report. I don’t think the govt has a case that it could win in a court of law. This will take the file off the table long before the next general election. If he fails the file will be hanging over the next general election.

Yahapalanaya failed to deliver on its two main promises:
1 Prosecuting former regime members involved with corruption
2 Prosectung former regime members responsible for murder and abductions
    3 Economic growth

Damn good lesson for not honoring their promises. Bond scam had had an huge impact as well. As a result yahapalanaya taken to the cleaners.

Hope Ranil and Sirisena will wake up from their slumber and prosecute all responsible for corruption including bond scam thieves.

If not Yahapalanaya will be history in 2020.

1.Ranil must resign.i have been saying this since the time of the bond scam.i predicted the UNP rout many times on this blog. The no 1 prblem for the UNP is ranil and no 2and 3 too.

2.The UNPmust have an election where the leader and the working committee members are elected by the rank and file, not the top echelons of the party who live in their colombo 7 glasshouses.

3.Maithri has nothing to worry and continue to be the president. He should not give the SLFP presidency to mahinda.Without wasting his time about the SLFP he should use all his powers to clean up the country of corruption and crime. He should not talk about taking over the economy.investors will run off.UNP is the best for the economy.Without investment this country cannot come up.Rajapakshes are also useless for investment purposes as the dumbells who voted for him will find out if he is given a second chance.A good cleaned up UNP with its business friendly policies is the best for the country.Let mahinda go his way with the SLPP and maitri go his way with the SLFP bringing its policies closer to the UNP.The UNP plus SLFP plus the minorities can together beat mahinda’s SLPP in the future as they did in the presidential elections. However to do that the mixed system must be abolished by maithri and proportional system brought back.

Don’t panic like in the share market which created futher panic and slide.Use your brain to see where you went wrong and take all corrective measures and fight back.

Hail Mahinda saviour of Sri Lanka. Beware any traitors in the making like Sirisena that Karma will catch up on you. And what about godayatik spittle lickers with even more godaya names like Shyamon, Geederick, Borvin et al. ASpiration to higher status by trying to curry favour with socially superior people is a most servile trait which never pays. It is much more honourable to be honest to yourself and not to pretend that you are someone else.

Were people misled by the two first words ie ” Sri Lanka ____ ____ ________ “. Or else their choice had been respectively, Hora No 1, Hora No 2 and Hora No 3. Whatever it is MS and RW can now be happy for blocking the judiciary to act independently.

Maithiripala Sirisena deserves this humiliating defeat. Once in the seat of power he became intoxicated with power and abandoned his promises to the people and went around with a rhetoric ride imagining of himself as a king on an unstable pedestal. He forgot that even during the presidential elections, it was the Tamils and Muslims who saved him. As in that election the Sinhalese abandoned him. My advice – in life you rarely get a shot that he got but, as is usually the case, he screwed it. As far as I can see, there is not even one donkey in Sri Lanka who is capable of achieving a united and respected Sri Lanka. Sigh.

It is not surprising Mahinda Rajapakse lead SLPP winning this election because it is the Buddhist Sinhala fundamentalism that has the influencing power in deciding the outcome in any election in Srilanka. In fact, it is a great loss to the mainstream SLFP lead by Maithiripala Senanayake. Until the final results released we cannot see how the voting pattern changed from 2015 elections. At this stage, SLPP’s national share is less than 50%. In otherwords, SLFP created under SWRD is dead and replaced with SLPP lead by Mahinda. Most of the Sinhalese people are in support of Mahinda’s corruption and white van murder technique. So, we can expect blood bath in the future.

President Sirisena is a Spineless Emptyhead who deserves all this and more. The extremely unfavourable results are of his own making, with much assistance provided by his otherwise incapable prime minister RW.
