Former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka‘s Media Coordinator quit the party in a blaze of publicity today, slamming his ex-boss for ruthless and authoritarian tactics and alleging that he had killed Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunga.

Sanjeewa Samarasinghe told a press conference in Colombo today that was repeatedly disrupted by Fonseka’s Democratic Party members that the former Army Chief had run the party with a dictatorial style.
He said that it was clear Fonseka had been responsible for the murder of the Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge in January 2009.
Several Fonseka party members sat amidst media personnel and repeatedly challenged Samarasinghe’s claims.
Later in the day, the Democratic Party hit back, saying that Samarasinghe had been sacked over his embezzlement of Rs 50000 and was now attempting to exact revenge. Samarasinghe has been with Fonseka’s party since the former Army Chief’s release from prison in 2012.

There’s nothing curious at all in what’s happening. What is surprising is that it took so long for people to see Fonseka for what he is. SF is no hero, but a menacing character looking for power. There is plenty of evidence from his army career that he rides roughshod over others to get what he wants. That is what is really scary about him. He has no political ideology or vision, but is simply seeking power for power sake. He is motivated by revenge. He believes in putting the “minorities in their place” and yet the duplicitous TNA got the Tamil people to vote for him in the last presidential election. Hope this is the beginning of the unraveling of Fonseka.

Fonseka was a professional soldier who worked his way through the ranks. He did not ask or planned to be a hero; it was thrust upon him by the people of the country who watched his performance as the Chief of The Army during the last few years of the war. He designed a master war strategy for the land war, and had the ability to deliver it too. He selected right commanders for the key fighting forces, and had an excellent way of planning, provisioning, directing and controlling. The people and politicians, in particular the President and Sec of Defence fully supported him, morally and materially. he together with his co-defence forces commanders conducted the war and ended the terrorist menace.
Unfortunately, this professional soldier did not quite understand that in SLK, rules of politics are not played by the book as he used to play Army Regulation in the Army. That was the root cause of his downfall. He may well have started politics in good faith, but he has been manipulated by the wrong people and negative forces. Bad luck, that was destiny.
Fonseka’s good work was done in full publicity, and just because some people have now turned against him, they cannot wipe out what did happen. We all saw it, and we all heard it. He was honored by the President himself and people and social groups all over the country. Time cannot be pulled back and past events replayed to suit the people that keep changing their minds. So give the man his due credit and commiserate his loss.

I have not lived in the country for the last two decades, but I compare things with thoose I knew the past, that we the poor folks enjoyed more democracy in the country then than it is today. We did not have today’skind of facilities then, but still looking at POLICE uniform, we thought and even felt, were confident that they delivered a thousand time better service than that of today.
Politicians what they preach and even behave in parliament was not the case that time. Recalling how Ronnie the Mel held BUDGET speeches was a historic event us then, today, even if the President held it one cant have that much respect on him, knowing that one good JVPer publicly made, president of the country today is over corrupted man. He even stabilised and sanitised the felons. So entwined high crimes and drug problems will get expanded rather than vanishing from today’s society.
The panicking we had decades ago towards drugs and drug consumes have been taken away by the politicians cum drug dealers in the country today. We were shocked while seeing drug addicts or the like abusive ones in the country then (mid 80ties), I still remember my parents asking me ” please take of your my son when getting close to ones from Hikkaduawa or touristic areas”. It was only to protect us. Not to create racism, but I know myself today, the sons of good educated parents are caught by drug mafia in colombo. Looking at all these BEING out of the country today I feel, something key components of the life should have been neglected in the society today. Schools that are called as -popular ones have become the primary source of drugs for some innocent sons of colombo or suburbs living parents. It is said not at all easy task them parents to enroll their lovely ones to these colleges, but at the end of the day, what have they achieved by sending them to those schools ?

We have all read a great deal over the last couple of years about who was responsible for Lasantha’s killing. Obviously someone with a lot to lose by his writings was at the bottom of it. There are many actors within the govt and military one can point to.
Fonseka is no saint. He and his family benefited a great deal from his deals with the Rajapakse bros. His time in prison was just cosmetics for us fools. He knows enough to put them in jail and they know a lot that can put him in jail too. As for a leader, he came so close to winning and I am so glad he lost because he is NOT a leader. His military acumen is questionable although he was the commander at the time of the LTTE defeat. Right place, right time?
I think we should all give the JVP a look. I think they will do well to drop the JVP because they have an image problem beyond the obvious connection to atrocities, killings and 2 insurrections. They are capable, educated and should be able to execute given the chance. It is up to us to give them the opportunity. That is the least we can do for ourselves.

One should also look for motive too. LW had many times published articles pointing to people who had a motive to take him out. He even gave away the motive. Once he wrote that he had on his mobile the recording of a threatening phone call from a powerful politician. He never accused SF. We have yet to hear a verdict from our judiciary that LW might have taken his own life. In today’s SLk such verdicts are the common themes. Has anyone ever wondered why of all the many things in LW’s possessions, it was his mobile that was taken by the killers.
Remember there was a spate of police raids on underworld thugs around the time of SF’s downfall. All raids ended up with liquidating the thugs. A powerful politician and official sanctioned those raids. Thereby the killers of LW might well have been eliminated off this world, and no traces left to track any evidence.

All right thinking ones would agree with you unequivocally.
SF’s reactions as came to light all these few years, since he was abducted, treated by all unfair means, proved us all how principled man he has been of course than many in parliamentary politics today.
Be it against injustice, unfair verdicts and anything else related to war crimes investigations, this man has all along been in one opinion which is “if we are clean why should we be away from any kind of free investigation”.
Latter made everyone every clear who is here right and who is wrong here. But the ones- like bread crumbs would do anything to turn the press against this SF. But those who respect principles and discipline of life will always support SF.
If I were there, I would have joined his campaign and even JVP of today in fighting for JUSTICE that is becoming a “foreign” word to the cruel politicians in active politics in the country today.

You are dead right.If you are clean and fair, you have no place in today’s context in the country. Here, SF, Ranil and few others are key victims. That is very sad. Even former CJ Dr. SB belong to this category. There are lot more in silent mode – being unable to get on with lunatics – and therefore they have chosen better be silent than raise their voices.
JVP of today have good arguments while UNPrs go parallel to them. Balaya and Wada pitiya are good programs delivered by pvt TV channels weekly. There people can get more about how people are suffered in the country today.
Laxman Seneviratne and many others are overwelmed by president’s magical performance to their eyes, not knowing sometimes the least to join JVPers with constructive counters.

b) Harsha of UNP reveals the frauds being made with banned illegal chinese banks – nothing about these being discussed by rulers… may be there are much more not even exposed to many of the ruling ministers so they fail to respond – everything this restrict to familial rule

This guy Sanjeeva may be a plant. The character assisination of general fonseka seems to be in line with Rajapaksa Regime tactics to prevent people voting for the Democratic Party as it may hinder the election win for the Rajapaksa brothers. Lasantha was killed near the Air Force camp on Aththidiya along the Rathmalana Road. Air Force airmen are always on duty near the main gate and some times they are on the road close to the turn off to Lasnatha’s Sunday leader office.
Turn off to lasnatha’s press office is nt more than 100 mts from this Camp gate and anyone who killed Lasnath on the Rathmalana Road should have seen by these Airmen if they were on duty. But on this day they were not anywhere near the gate as the killers were from the same Tri-sevice connected to Rajapaksa family. Few people are aware of this murder and the leader of the lot is now seeking refugee status in a foreign country. Fonseka never had a hand on this murder.

If particular Sanjeeva himself should be a journalist. So what made him to stay that silent knowing SF is the killer of LW ? SF should take a legal action against this virulent so called media man of his party. Hope people would see it correct not falling on made propaganda against SF.
These bread crumbs comparable to Mervin, Kumarwalgama or the like level, would do anything for money. Today Gammpila sees no wrong asking people to support hin in his election campaign with 100 rupees…. like money extortions have been familiar to everyone. Even so long strong buddhist lay men to collect funds, should have been coming from Mervin’s actiivities in Kelaniya area; many in that areas accused him of taking lacks of rupees for road constructions etc.
Tomorrow, any other politician would take this as nothing but to beg to people if their political rivals are to be killed by conventional mechnisms using by Rajapkshe thuggish administration.
