Gota Opens New Dagoba In Kilinochchi

In another symbolic gesture of Buddhist hegemony over the Tamil dominated parts of the island, Secretary to the Ministry Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Army Commander Dayaratne yesterday inaugurated a sparkling new Buddhist temple in the former rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi in the Wanni region and enshrined the Buddha’s sacred relics in its pinnacle.

The pagoda at the Mankulam Sri Sugatha Viharaya was unveiled last morning and preceded by an all night pirith chanting, the Defence Ministry said.

“Security Force Headquarters-Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN),fully supported the construction of this new pagoda at the request of the temple incumbent, Ven Hingurakande Sumana Thera since it is place of Buddhist worship with a long history, but remained totally dilapidated for more than thirty years after terrorism for separation commenced in the North,” the Ministry said on its website.

The Defence Ministry said a special illumination pooja had been held the same evening in the premises were to bring the two-day ceremonies to an end. Security Forces HQ Kilinochchi troops and Engineer Service Regiment troops lent their expertise for the construction, the Ministry said.

There are over twenty million Tamil Buddhists in Tamilnadu. The total number of Buddhists in India is much more. This goat is opening the door to something he cannot control.

      crazyoldmansi,

“There are over twenty million Tamil Buddhists in Tamilnadu.”

      Interesting.

There are hardly Any Tamil Buddhists in Sri Lnka. What happened?
      Sinhalese Buddhist Racism and Chauvinism?

Will this increase the number of Tamil Buddhists in Sri Lanka and remove the Tamil Caste System? Will the Sinhala Buddhist violence increase or decrease? Will boys be safe?

Or will it just increase the number of monks, to go after more boys like the Catholic Church?

Child Abuse by a Monk in Habaraduwa

She sent her grandson to school with the idea of providing him with proper education to make him a good person. The Buddhist monk in charge of the temple asked her to send the child to the temple and she sent him there because they were poor. There was no possibility for them to pay the money for tuition fees. That was the reason why they sent the boy to the temple school. When the child began to refuse going to the temple school so adamantly, grandmother had to look for the reason. It was then only that she discovered that the child who was sent to learn good behavior, ethics and Buddha’s Dharma from the monk had in fact been abused by the monk.

Kapila you obviously do not understand English. This temple had been damaged by the LTTE and is restored . if YOU visit the North from Trincomalee to Jaffna you will see how many temples have been destroyed and is now rubble with only the foundations intact.

You ignorance does not help . Go and find out for yourself .

building a temple hindu or a church is not an issue.but any building of religious monument which has got a strong political overtone is unnacceptable.here buddhism is identified with sinhalese chauvinism as mentioned by some readers buddhism has adherents in tamil nadu.zen buddhism which was founded by bodhi dharma who was born in kancheepuram.but anything which is imposed will not be accepted becaUSE it goes against human nature it is love that matters not force.it is a case of force being introduced in this case.let sinhalese learn buddhism properly shorn of chauvinism, irrational beliefs, mindless rituals.buddha founded the religion as an anti dote to hinduism which sufferred from these ills but buddhism being practised in srilanka hardly seems to be different from hinduism which has manny aforementioned ills.i hope sinhalese will learn buddhism in its pure form.

Regarding Child abuse, of course the Catholic Church is the leader and this is not exclusive to Buddhism. Go to U Tube and search Catholic Church Child Abuse. Just one search result.

Did some quick research. Googled Why Pope Benedict resigned?

          http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/21/pope-benedict-mystical-experience-resignation_n_3790359.html

Former Pope Benedict cited his advanced age and failing strength as the reason he stepped down from the Church’s highest office on February 11, though recent comments reveal a different motivation behind his unusual resignation, the first in 600 years.

Benedict reportedly underwent a “mystical experience” during which God inspired within him an “absolute desire” to devote his life to prayer. He now lives in a secluded residence in the Vatican gardens where he receives few visitors and is uninvolved with Vatican issues, though he holds the title of Pope Emeritus.

According to Zenit, Benedict replied, “God told me to,” in response to an inquiry about his motivation for stepping down. A senior Vatican source corroborated the story, commenting, “The report seems credible. It accurately explains the spiritual process that brought Benedict to resign.”

He is quite blunt with poor comprehension of issues in question, so he harangues those who contribute intelligently. Poor kolla still struggling to gain his equilibrium.

There aren’t 20 million Tamil Buddhists in Tamil Nadu. Get your facts correct! Its more like 20,000!

This said, its perfectly ok to build a Buddhist temple in Kilinochchi just as it is ok to build churches there. Further, there are Hindu temples in Galle and Anuradhapura!

“Religion is being misused for politics by followers of a dubious background.”

Not just the religion, but all aspects of human living such as citizenship, language, shared heritage, land lives and livelihood, dignity, and human rights are being misused.

If things go wrong don’t blame the people who would be prepared or compelled to take up arms in about thirty or so years time, blame those who created the condition.

I don’t give a toss about building, temple, dagoba, minaret, church, synagogue, ………… as long as it is build by the people free of army occupation.

This is imposition of will of the victors and has nothing to do with Buddha’s teaching. This is what my elders call Sinhala/Buddhism.

Building a Pagoda is not a big thing, the big thing is do the people living in the area respect the pagoda and the place of worship. If the Government has to bring people from outside the area to visit and pray at this Pagoda it is a waste of money on one hand and also its a benefit to the people living in the area as the tourism business will improve thereby improving their income.

Most buddhists in the north are carrying guns and are in uniform.
They walk into hindu temples with boots on,and assault priests who object.
Temple poojas are strictly controlled – most temples have been looted, desecrated & even demolished.
They ‘supervise’ all family events closely – permits are necessary for funerals.
    War widows are sexually abused.
Those carrying “relics” should allow hindus to practice their religion unhindered.

Just a disgrace how GOTA and the Nationalist Monks are abusing Buddhism for ethnic supremacist goals.

If there really was a pre- 2009 Buddhist Dagoba there then it is not just right but absolutely needed to renovate it, but if this is a post 2009 creation, it is Buddhism being abused by Rajapaksa regime/Military and Nationalist Monks.

The very sad fact is that Tamils will turn against Buddhism because of such actions when in fact Buddhism is much needed freedom from the exploitation and abuse rife in Hinduism.

This article starts with “In another symbolic gesture of Buddhist hegemony over the Tamil dominated parts of the island”,…

So, all those Hindu temples around Pettah, Kotahen and many along the Galle Road up to Moratuwa? What are they?

Is that a symbolic gesture of Hindu hegemony over the Sinhala dominated parts of the island, or, are the writers balls covering his eyes?

    • 0
      0

      Reasonable

“So, all those Hindu temples around Pettah, Kotahen and many along the Galle Road up to Moratuwa? What are they?”

The Tamils didn’t build those Temples under Tamil/Saiva army occupation.

“Is that a symbolic gesture of Hindu hegemony over the Sinhala dominated parts of the island,”

      Hegemony means:

Dominance, especially by one state or social group over others.

I think you didn’t understand the concept and reality of the word hegemony.

“or, are the writers balls covering his eyes?”

I am sorry how can one’s balls cover one’s eyes. In order to achieve it one should have sagging balls being dragged on the floor which is very painful and one must walk on one’s hands in order to cover one’s eyes.

      Its rather confusing.

Could you explain to me what exactly you meant by “Hindu hegemony over the Sinhala dominated parts of the island”

      • 0

I have one thing to tell you. If the dragging of balls along the ground hurts, pick them up and wrap around the neck and try peeping out of the window, you sicko without better things to do.

Tell your other ego Peacelover to do the same thing.

“I have one thing to tell you. If the dragging of balls along the ground hurts, pick them up and wrap around the neck and try peeping out of the window, you sicko without better things to do.”

Is that what you do to when you are bored?

          This is what you wrote:

“are the writers balls covering his eyes?”

My first rational question was, is it physically possible. I gave a great deal of thought about it and came to the conclusion only those Sinhala/Buddhist Rationales are capable of such a great yoga posture, highly trained in a new kind of yoga with lots of practices.

your talking utter BS mate, anyone can build temples churches and mosques if done by their own will not when you get the Govt to forcibly build them using taxppayers money just to prove their superiority!

    • 0

Tamils built those temples to serve the local Tamil populace, it was not to rub Singhala noses in Tamil hegemony in a symbolic and very public way.

There is nothing wrong with building Buddhist temples or shrines in the North East, as long as it is by the established local people for their needs, but this is coming from a Singhala nationalist perspective. MR regime isn’t Buddhist, they are fake Buddhists who have hijacked Buddhism for their own political advancement.

Lets not get our facts confused with opinion and gossip. I have never been beyond Anuradhapura and have no inclination to visit the new sites of interest many from the South have been visiting in the last 3 years.

There were many shrines and temples in the North long before Pirabakaran and his ilk raised their heads! And many will survive long after all of us are mud in the ground.

What is at stake is Sri Lanka’s chance to reunify geographically and emotionally. The Rajapaksa’s are stoking the communal instincts amongst the gullible and have harnessed the extreme elements amongst the Buddhist clergy to get this done. In exchange for violence and intimidation perpetrated by these thugs they are getting State patronage for their nefarious activities.

In the meantime, just like the UNP have become the willing opposition in the last 5 years, the Maha Sangha have been co-opted by gifts and threats. This is a failure of morals and religion. Devout Buddhists should be extremely concerned about this development because we really do not have the younger generation paying much attention to religious activities, and 20 years from now who will we turn to? BBS????

I agree with you……….. if there were temples and they must be restored and if there are significant number of disciples and followers their need to worship must be accommodated ……. I think what irks many is the involvement of a government servant (SD) and the armed forces in restoring these.

This is a civilian task and needs volunteerism, not from the defense forces though

      • 0
        0

There is nothing wrong with the armed forces doing these things after the horrific sacrifice they made . In the US the average citizen makes it a point to thank every serviceman for their service . I am ashamed to say there is nothing of the sort in our country . It is because of their sacrifice we can take a public bus and go where ever we like . its a pity that our country has forgotten this so quickly .

    Lord Buddha,

I respect you. You originated in India like almost all citizens have come from India. India is our motherland. Your preaching has enlightened many around the world. Unfortunately, it has been heart breaking that a violent military commander who agreed in public that he beheaded thousands of innocent civilians took part to justify his animal behavior. How can you be in the hands of blood thirty criminals?

The silence approval of this by majority of the true Buddhists is shameful and it is against humanity and true preaching of Buddha. People do not understand the facts. The violence against Tamils by the so called Buddhist Sinhalese have done more damage to the Sinhala Buddhists than Tamils. Over 100,000 Sinhala Buddhists were massacred by their own brothers in this land within last six decades. Over 50,000 Sinhala Buddhists were killed and another 50000 were disabled in a war to oppress Tamils. The whole world now branded Sinhala Buddhists as war criminals, worst human right abusers and criminals against humanity.

Why we are wrong? Is it Buddha failed to us or We failed to Buddha?
    We need answers?
