The leftist parties had requested President Maithripala Sirisena to set up an interim UPFA government before the general elections and appoint Chamal Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister to ensure stability in the country and to fulfill political reforms, Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) leader Tissa Vitharana said today.
“I requested President to appoint Chamal Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister temporally because it will help ensure the unity in the party. We can rescue the country from the downfall it had experienced today and bring development process back on track,” he said.
Professor Vitharana told a joint news conference of several political party party leaders such as Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Douglas Devananda, Prabha Ganeshan that the UPFA government had a mandate to govern the country till 2016 and that it would not annul even after the defeat at the last presidential election.
“It is a wrong move to appoint a UNP government led by Ranil Wickremesinghe. The economy is in a great crisis and the cost of living is skyrocketing after the new government was elected. There has been no government in history that went bankrupt within six months,” he said.(Ajith Siriwardana)

The six-member committee appointed by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has unanimously decided to nominate former president Mahinda Rajapaksa as the party’s prime ministerial candidate no matter what President Maitripala Sirinsena’s views are on this matter, informed sources said.
SLFP Vice Chairman and Minister Rajitha Senaratne told the weekly Cabinet meeting that the president had categorically stated that Mr. Rajapaksa would not be nominated for the general elections.
However, the committee comprising Chief Opposition Whip John Seneviratne, MPs Kumara Welgama, T.B. Ekanayake, Susil Premajayantha, Dilan Perera and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa has decided otherwise and was expected to convey its position to the President yesterday.
Meanwhile, the other political parties promoting Mr. Rajapaksa’s candidacy for prime minister are said to be awaiting the stance of the President before deciding on the next step. So what is the next step after he becomes prime minister ? unlike Putin becoming a executive President ,Mahinda with his majority arm of strength in parliament will with no doubt move the Prime Minister to executive powers which will enable him to be Pm for life time . he will not bother Maithree and Maithree will not bother him.

Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers have approved the new electoral system proposed for the 20th Amendment that increased the number of parliamentary seats to 237 from the current 225 and the proposed legislation has been gazetted.
Meanwhile, several minor parties including the SLMC have expressed willingness to contest next general election under the United National Party (UNP) led by the Prime Minister.
