Vital documents in connection to the controversial MiG deal has gone missing, the FCID informed Court today. This was revealed when the case was taken up before the Fort Magistrate.
The documents were vital in building a case against former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga over his involvement in the alleged fraud during the purchase of MIG aircrafts in 2006 for the Air Force under the term of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s. Weeratunga, who is Mahinda Rajapaksa’s first cousin, is currently in hiding overseas.
The Magistrate has ordered the FCID to immediately begin an investigation to verify how these vital documents went missing. She also told the FCID officials not to hesitate in taking action against any official who may have been involved in the cover up operation.

If any documents related to proof materials gone missing, the authorities should take that very serious.
Now with all the various documents and the related proof materials being often missed, it sseem the current authorties make it no that serious.
They have to go against the responsible men of the issues one behind the other to the manner Germans do it rigorously.
No excuses of any forms must not allow here… then only we can work for a law and order system.
/

You talk about taking the kind of issues to be serious. …
As I experienced it last week during my visit paid to lanka – even if a man crossing a crowded rd would have been injured by rush of vehicle, nobody would pay any attention. Life is in danger for anyone down there, no respect at all…. these folks should be taught the way they have to respect the laws inthe country.
We talk about us beocming a mid income earning nation, but for me, they are no better to some far poor afro countries and their behaviours. Just because lower fractions behave respecting laws – the country may be ranked that way….
Average people behave no better to animals in colombo and the road crossing near ot Paliyagoda or main roads.

Sam Fernando, such a thing will never happen in Germany, because here the authorities know their responsibility.
Firstly, if at all it happens, public and the media will make a such a huge demand asking the responsible Minister to resign. In the worse scenario, the minister would step down.
Do you think the responsible minister in Sri Lanka would ever do that even if there is a demand from the media ?
Secondly, where is the demand ? Not even from CT isn’t it?
Thirdly, these documents could have helped to find out the truth and nail the wrong do ers.
It was in the trusted hands of “Yahapalana Authorities”
If they were careless with the documents, who is at fault ? Gota ?
If the “Yahapalanaya” really wanted to nail Gota, why didn’t they protect the documents well?
I mean that would have been THE CHANCE for them isn’t it ?
Or is it that “Yahapalanaya” saw well ahead that there is nothing fishy in the MIG deal that could be brought against Gota? therefore Yahapalanaya invented a new story to feed the media to keep “Rajapakse Horu” slogen going on ?
Lastly, just as someone has “vanished” the documents is a crime, it is much worse crime to keep room for someone to steel the documents.
So the worse part is been done by the later.
In Germany the most top man will be held responsible for not having his ministries/authorities in order. Because all of them are paid by the tax payer.
So the call for the resignation of the minister and the minister responsible leaving would be seen here as Good Governance” (Yahapalanaya)
That’s how the Germans would look at it and deal with it.
Sam you and I know “Yahapalanaya” would not do that !.
So don’t say to do it the “German way”.

Yes we perfectly know at the time the regime changes were made, they had been no germans or the like brains to order not to occur all the hidden happenings such as document stealings and old other various robs. Very same men were around to do the job. SO business as usual, everything went out. So we cant expect just because a regime change, in a country whose every second is pro- corrupt than anti to behave like Germans.Uns ist crystal klar dass unsere Leute werden nie besser werden. Not only in Germany, but in any civilized world inclu. lanken pvt sector companies they have mechanisms to protect their documents. In today s world, IT can help them to do the due keeping back ups for each docs.
We talk about all wonders, but not the least being able to do in terms of data protection, how can we achieve the level of so called exemplary hubs to the region.
I simply believe, if any good move to be adpated to the prevailing system will be a mammoth task so long no attitudinal changes are the case. Paradigm shift in many areas should occur simulataneouly if at all this nation to be turned to a developed one.

The purchase of four MiG 27 aircraft by the Defence Ministry in 2006 at a cost of US$ 2.462 million each and the procedure followed in relation to their purchase had been clouded in mystery till Mangala Samaraweera and Sripathi Sooriyaarachchi, two key ministers who broke away from the Rajapakse government made a complaint to the Bribery Commission alleging corruption on the part of the Former President’s brother, Gotabaya Rajapakse. These aircraft had remained on the market unsold for a long time and their life span had expired. Moreover this type of aircraft were not in use in the air forces world over except Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka.
This fellow Gota and MR are untouchables. None of the Rajapaksa,s will be ever prosecuted and only small sprats get caught to the net.
Moreover FCID Chief is a bosom pal of Gota!! Finally the missing MIG files will never be found and udayanga and the rest will be globe trotting courtesy of Rajapaksa brothers.

Why ?
Any good moves being made by current rulers are out of view ?
Why Presss men work only to hype up the most abusive family politics ?
Is that press freedom ? I simply feel they have been abusing the press freedom introduced by incumbent govt.
It is also sad to see as President says, not much is being passed to ground level of people … so people feel not okay with the current govt. Rajakaashes make it a big issue even if they opened a toilet in a school…

There are moles within moles set up in strategic offices to protect the Rajapakse family. MR and not Interpol can tell the FCID where Udayanga Weeratunga is. Bail Rajapakse can tell the FCID where his wife Pushpa is. Have they been asked?

What happened to Govt. security network system and who held these documents last and why not drill him and others responsible and get to the bottom of it. Presume he or she is not in the country. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT SOMEBODY SCRATCHED SOMEBODY ELSE’S BACK AT THAT TIME AND THAT KINDNESS IS BEING RECIPROCATED NOW, AT THE PUBLIC’S EXPENSE.
The people have to think seriously of an alternative to an Ohey Palayang government that is acting contrary to the public interest and is, at best, deliberately paving the way for a return of the Rajapaksas.

A thought.
1. Lasantha Wickrematune published some documents in the Sunday Leader on the MIG deal.
2. Gotabhaya Rajapake instituted a case against the Sunday Leader and its editors in the Mt. Lavinia courses on the same subject.
Definitely vital documents relating To MIG deal were submitted to the courts by both parties.
Where are these documents? How did the case end? I remember reading that the Mt. Lavinia counts were declared out of bounds for the public and media, whenever Mr.Rajapakse was summoned to give evidence. Wasn’t Mr. Sumanthiran involved in this case on behalf of the Sunday Leader? If so, he should have some documents in his files.

That kind of simple logic is only of academic interest where there is such rampant corruption that NO PRINCIPLES PREVAIL,leave alone the basic rule of law.

I expected all critical documents to be shreded or burnt on the very same night the presidential election results were declared. Rajapakshas have agents and blind supporters at every level of the administration; they would do anything for their feeders to suppress the evidence. I am not even surprised that it took all this time for the ‘penny to drop’.FCID or prosecutors must be very naive to think that their adversaries are playing by the rule book and leave the evidence lying around to be discovered.

RW/MS, tell the fucking A-G to file criminal charges; to hold him in remand until the criminal case is concluded after ten or fifteen years. If convicted he can rot and die in jail. If found innocent, he can be released as he will not be in a fit condition to do any further harm to Sri Lanka.

The Complicity if not connivance and collusion on the part of the bureaucracy. Why and how it happens. This is the question the masters and the advocates should ask themselves. Take the two recent incidents as an examples. Egyptian President and Turkish President Erdogna. The coup against Mursi was successful because he allowed the bureaucracy in the key points to continue even after his election to high office. But the Turkish President had transferred officials from the key places in the administration after his election to high office. So he survived and escaped from the coup.

Many of the investigations on corruption during previous regime are hindered due to missing evidence and files. Evidences relating to Thajudin case, MIG deals, Lasantha’s case, Finance Ministry, etc suddenly goes missing whenever FCID makes a headaway. Any person with an iota of common intelligence knows that most of these corrupt deals were carried out by politicians, their appointees and henchman. The politicians loosing power does not mean that action can be taken against them as long as officials, public officers and military personal loyal to these politicians are still in responsible positions. Those missing evidence, files, etc ate under the care of certain officials who are responsible for their safety as public officials. It is time that these ofiicials are hauled out in front of the law and charged for misappropriation, negligence or attempt to obstruct justice, They should be dealt severely with with minimum of not less than ten years rigorous imprisonment so that they spend better part of their life behind bars and prevented from enjoying any bribes dished out by corrupt polticians they protect. This will let them decide whether they should come clean and act as responsible public officials serving the people or should sacrifice their life for favours and bribes doled out by corrupt politicians who robbed the country, People deserve justice and government appointed by people has a right to deliver justice by bringing back all siphoned out financial resources.

The Government must take stock of the unfolding situation where investigations are hampered by interested and scrupulous past officials of the Rajapakse regime.
If documents are missing from the MOD, then the former Defense Secretary and all concerned officials should be asked to explain, as it amounts to aiding and abetting in the crime, if one has been committed.
The Magistrate has given a very clear order and put the ball in the FCID court to investigate the matter of the missing documents. What the FCID could do is to bring all concerned to court and let them defend their position as to what has happened to these documents.
Like the Prime Minister has pointed out, we need more professionals brought into the FCID to sort out this enigmatic situation.
The Government could also seriously consider to appoint Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to head a single unit amalgamating the FCID, BRIBERY COM and other related agencies.
We need a “Man with a purpose” to dig the shit out and he would be the ideal person in the context as he has an axe to grind with the culprits. He should be given a mandate BUT within the realms of Justice.
He could be assisted by Former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake which would add some spice and flavour. The Rajapakses should be stopped in their tracks or we would have a Sri Lanka drenching in blood.
The safest for all right thinking Sri Lankans would be to see the Rajapakses firmly behind bars and the keys thrown far out to sea.
They have committed enough crimes to see that they are in the slammer for ever.

Keys to each safe is with one designated officer.
Hence, documents cannot “get lost”.
The officer in charge of court documents, in this case, would be responsible – it should be easy to trace the officer.
