Missing A Trick And Showing A Slip

By Malinda Seneviratne –

President Mahinda Rajapaksa did not invite seemingly estranged leaders of coalition partners such as Champika Ranawaka and Wimal Weerawansa to accompany him to the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.  He did not invite his Prime Minister or any other seniors in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.  He didn’t even invite the Leader of the Opposition, Ranil Wickremesinghe.  Instead, President Rajapaksa invited the Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council to accompany him to Delhi.  Wigneswaran declined.

The context is important. Wigneswaran’s party, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) spares no opportunity to run to Delhi to whine and dine.  In fact the TNA fired off a congratulatory message to Mr Modi no sooner the Bharatiya Janatha Party (BJP) won the election, expressing hope (yet once again) that Delhi would interfere on behalf of the TNA (to exact from Rajapaksa ‘peacefully’ what Velupillai Prabhakaran failed to obtain through terrorism).

Wigneswaran has trotted out the lamest of excuses and in doing so has conceded all brownie points at stake to the President.  Wigneswaran claims that had he accepted the invitation  it would ‘give a false impression to the international community that the Northern PC and the Central Government had a strong relationship’.  The international community, so-called, was not born yesterday and Wigneswaran ought to have known this.  Worse, this ‘back-off’ only ‘shows-off’ Wigneswaran and the TNA.

Wigneswaran is but a leader of a province and can claim to speak for less than a third of the Tamils living in Sri Lanka.  As such, there is little grace in tossing aside a presidential invite.  If only it was just that and nothing else! The truth is that Wigneswaran, the invitation-decliner, veritably salivates when receiving invitations from close associates of Prabhakaran now domiciled in various parts of Europe and North America.

As for relationships with the center, strong or otherwise, their status has a lot to do with who Wigneswaran’s friends are and what he chooses to be blind to.  There are definite moves to resurrect the LTTE and the TNA’s conspicuous silence on this clearly indicates tacit approval.  In that context it is certainly generous of the President to put all that aside and invite Wigneswaran to accompany him.

It appears that Wigneswaran would rather toe the LTTE line than help promote goodwill with the entities that disgruntled sections of the Tamil community would ultimately have to deal with, in this instance represented by the President.  He might think ‘I snubbed him,’ but in reality he has indicated that reconciliation of any kind is anathema to the TNA, a red flag to a bull so to speak.

All things considered this is pretty puerile on the part of the former Supreme Court Judge.  It would appear to some that this is a clear indication of who really controls the Wigneswaran and the TNA: pro-LTTE extremists in expatriate Sri Lankan Tamil community and their local representative, the true leader of the TNA by default, Suresh Premachandran.

The quick slide to political redundancy has to be seen as mirroring a pandering to extremists by an earlier generation led by Appapillai Amirthalingam and the TULF.  Wigneswaran knows how that story played itself out.  Perhaps it is too late. Perhaps he has no choice.

Whatever the truth may be, one thing is clear.  The President got to look magnanimous and Wigneswaran turned up looking a spoiler.  Modi didn’t invite Wigneswaran.  He invited Rajapaksa, scoffing at those who protested the move.  Someone has missed a trick here and it is not Mahinda Rajapaksa.

An absolute nonsensical article which is not surprising, as we all know this author “sucking up” to the GOSL.

Most of the Tamils bot in SL, TN, and worldwide support CM W’s decision which was supported by the other elected NPC members and cabinet. BTW, PMelect Modi and the BJP is well brifed on the Tamil issue and so are his future cabinet members.

So President MR cannot fool Delhi this time. He is welcome to invite the Tamil quislings like Karuna, Pillaiyan, KP, and Douglas on this trip. Ha ha ha.

Anyway PM Modi has unfortunately self tripped himself on this invitation to Rajapakse. The entire TN is very upset and annoyed. CM Jayalalitha and the 37 Tamil MP’s most likely would boycott the inauguration and there will be serious protest demonstrations in TN. PM Modi can thank Rajapakse personally while entertaining him with “Chicken Buriyani”.

Too bad Malinda. The Boru show did not work as the Tamils cannot be continued to be fooled.

It appears that Justice Wigneswaran’s rejection of Rajapaksa’s invitation has upset Malinda more than it did Rajafoxxa. Malinda’s wailing here shows how much he personally feels Rajafoxxa’s pain by this rejection. Paw, ane?

Malinda, your analysis is correct here. Wigneswaran could have got more done and accomplished with Rajapaksa and Modi, than pandering to the defeated LTTE and LTTE diaspora.

The critical part here is that Rajapaksa has not invited RW, Champika Ranawaka and Wimal Weerawansa and other senior SLFP leaders.

Looks like a wasted opportunity by Tamils.

Sometimes, the Tamils are very shortsighted, and Very stupid. Tamil-Madu? How many opportunities were lost by the LTTE with VP, when they were at their peak?

        Arumugam Thondaman ?

Is he a Puppy or Shill of Mahinda?

Now mahinda is akine in Delhi. The Tamil Nadu and the Students are protesting. Most Indians are avoiding Malinda Rajapaksa as a plague. Modi was boxed in by inviting all the SAARAC heads of state, was the right thing to do… but Mahinda has blood on his hands and they have not been washed yet…

Need to get a good set of earplugs for Mahinda…, do that he will not hear… Anyway even without earplugs, Mahinda does not hear…

Hi. Amarasiri Mahinda was not invited with a personal invitation by Modi, It was the administrative establishment who had wanted the invitations sent out to the SAARC’S leaders;- this information is from the BJP officials. Your President have never been magnanimous and does not know its meaning. If he was he should have taken to resolve the Tamil peoples grievances soon after the war in 2009 as he had promised the UNSG.
Malinda’s analysis is completely wrong. He too had looked at this invitation without collecting the facts. It seems a parochial racist view. Amarasiri, Whether this was a waste of opportunity by Tamils as you feel or think We may have to wait and see! Mahinda wanted to fool India and rest of the world by taking CVW with him. CVW understood the cunning fox’s motive and has sensibly declined. This is the gulf between the intellect and an imbecile. You people still think that the world is oblivious of your President’s words and his actions. He is known for his mega lies.

Thanks for clarifying the background to the BJP-Modi invitation. This should have been reported in the initial news report. Mahinda Rajapaksa will not do on his own, because of Para-Sinhala Mahanama “Buddhist” Racists and Chauvinists and Para-Sinhala racists behind him, but external exposure will help. Vanigeswaran lost an opportunity to network with the opportunity to network and gain Support from the other Indian leaders. See how LTTE got India to supply weapons and provide sanctuary in after 1983.

“Your President” is your President too just like Maveeran, LTTE Supremo, your Maveeran.

What a load of rubbish from Malinda.

This is the in the first time in the history of India that the swearing in ceremony of the prime minister elect of India is hijacked by the Tamils of Sri Lanka and VP is dead.

    Thanks to Mahinda

Malinda says: “The President got to look magnanimous and Wigneswaran turned up looking a spoiler”
We the People say: “Malida’s analysis is total BS, and we ask him to just wait until old Prez is back to check how red his ears are after Modi has a go at him”

We think that this is the beginning of the apala kaalaya for the royal wannabees and they should all go out and get some large geuda stones to wear on their person and many vajra-s to hold in their sweaty paws to ward off the forces of good that are on the way!

    Malinba,
You put lot of effort to analyze what the leaders of Tamil do and even then you claimed to know how they think.. Have you ever really tried to analyse your tribal leaders like MR/GR do and think and educate your tribal readers about their goods and bads? Or you just fulfilling your duties and obligation for interest free loans and their perks you get from your tribal leaders?
Whaever you say, most of Tamils and educated Sinhalese know what NE-CM did was inevitable. It is the most Sinhalese leaders who eagerly awaiting for fun oversees trips invitation. One good example is SL national rugby team captain, Moda-Prince NamalR went to Korea to play, 10 young down-south MPs joined the fun trip and avoid their work at the parliment… Do you have time one to analyse these? Nope..

You are not being honest, Malinda. In fact, a majority of the Sinhalese who write to CT, including those who make rash comments, do not bother about honesty.

Let me take you for what you say:

‘Wigneswaran is but a leader of a province and can claim to speak for less than a third of the Tamils living in Sri Lanka’.

This is very true. But, not honest.

CVW is the CM of Northern Provincial Council. He won it with consummate ease. How does that equate to your assertion that he CAN speak for less than a third of the Tamils living in Sri Lanka.

Who will speak for the rest of the Tamils of Sri Lanka, – You?

If CVW has no right to speak for them, you have NO RIGHT AT ALL. Just stop making silly statements.

The Tamils living spread in other parts of Sri Lanka, have no chance for a democratic say. They have no way of electing a CVW. The traditions of DEMOCRACY OF SRI LANKA has never given space for Tamils outside of North to speak for themselves. It is people like you who have SHUT THEIR SAY.

How is only a third of the Tamils happen to live in the North. How is that the rest are living outside of North. Have you ever asked yourself these questions? Can you at least try to answer this question honestly?

The Tamils living in the North have been continuously brutalised by the Police. The North has always been a police state since 1956. Since 1972, the Military has been added. The fear imparted to Tamils living in the North was so much that a good many who could afford to leave have slowly moved away from the North. This is a major part of the truth.

This migration was out of compulsion; out of the hardships encountered – politically, economically.

Remove the military interference from the lives of people in the North. Stop the Army stealing the opportunities of livelihoods of the people in the North. Stop planting Sinhalese in lands that is legitimately owned by Tamils. Stop scaring the Tamils with false pretences of re-emergence of LTTE in the North, and stop walking into their homes and lives.

Let Tamils living in the North be peaceful. You’ll see how the Tamils outside of North slowly trekking back to the North.

You may even take a referendum from Tamils living in South to find what they feel. Go ahead!

    You won’t do that that!

It is not that the Tamils are happy outside of North. The Sinhalese do not use the military to harass and frighten Tamils living among them, in the South.

There are claims that there has been no RIOTS in the SOUTH since 1983. Very true. Thank God, the Sinhalese are awaken to the actuality that any more riot will be the end of a United Sri Lanka.

    Stop pretending.

An utterly biased , one sided article based on perceptions and rhetoric rather than evidence led journalism.
Aren’t we all sick and tired the LTTE bogey being pulled out every time someone spurns or criticizes the President .

This article goes to show what a wide gap there still exists between the two communities not only at the bottom but even at the top level . So what hope for any reconciliation. Unless some one can break people at this level from their concrete moulds , seperation, some time in the future will become inevitable.

Sadly, Wigneswaran has shown that his politics is no different from that of the uneducated mass murderer, Prabhakan. The hope that as an educated man he would help overcome the ethnic politics that had bedevilled Sri Lankan life for 70 years was misplaced.

Vigneswaran is NOT smart ENOUGH. Why?

Lost an Opportunity to expose Mahinda’s Scheming on one-on-one with Modi and Indians.

Looks like the Tamil Nadu aka Tamil Madu Politicians were smarter, even though they they follow the LTTE directives blindly.

This is the Fricking Problem with the Tamils. They are not smart enough to come to s solution in stages, just like the Para-Sinhala.

So, Lanka, the Lanka, the Land of Native Veddah have a Fricking Para Problem.

Why don’t you Paras get back to South India, your Native Land. The DNA in you is confirmation.

Malinda Seneviratne was an accomplice of Champika Ranawaka and was an active member of the Sihala Urumaya.
So, his views are sinhala chauvinist!
Sinhala chauvinists along with Tamil extremists are the ones who got Sri Lanka to where it is- once a dream economy, look where it is today just 66 years after independence!
    Shame Malinda, same on you!

If MR wants to look magnanimous the first thing he has to do is to stop throwing spoilers at the Northern Provincial Council and allow it to function with full powers under the 13th amendment. His so-called magnanimity in inviting the NPC Chief Minister just ‘loketa parakashe, gedarata maragathe’.

The faux journalist MS, in this commentary, appears to mouth exactly what his Master-in-Charge GR would be saying about Wigneswaran.

Come, come Malinda! Stop making an A-H of yourself in very single commentary you make.

You, as well as your regime, know that Wigneswaran can meet Modi at anytime he wishes, and does need to hang on to MR’s satakaya to do that.

In fact, in the not too distant future you will see a direct invitation from the new PM of India to the CM of the NPC. And no guesses, Wigna won’t ask MR to accompany him on that visit!

Wigneswaran is absolutely right in spurning the Machiavellian invitation of MR.
