President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s decision to appoint the country’s most rabidly racist monk to chair a Presidential Task Force entrusted with implementing the Government’s ‘One Country One Law’ concept has been a slap in the face of minorities and the rule of law, activists and lawyers said.

The idea of handing over a law drafting process to a convicted felon is an outrage, Sri Lankans said on social media, as the country reeled from the shock of the appointment.
Galagodaththe Gnanasara is only out of prison because of President Maithripala Sirisena’s horrendous decision to pardon the monk who was facing a six-year jail term for contempt of court in 2019. He was jailed for intimidating the wife of disappeared person Prageeth Ekneligoda and disappearances campaigner Sandya Ekneligoda, in full view of the magistrate at the Homagama court in 2016. The rabidly racist monk has been at the helm of a hate-campaign against Sri Lanka’s Muslim population since 2012. The rampaging, rambunctious monk has spearheaded at least two major anti-Muslim riots in Aluthgama and Digana.
Gnansara is the General Secretary of Sinhala extremist group Bodu Bala Sena, which is synonymous with rising anti-Muslim sentiment in Sri Lanka since the organization was first launched in 2012.
His elevation as Chairman of a task force entrusted to measure draft laws against the Government’s One Country-One Law policy, which has always been a sophisticated slogan to assert the dominance of Sri Lanka’s Sinhala-Buddhist majority against the minorities, is a new low even for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who has made no secret of the fact that he was a president for the Sinhalese people. The appointment is being seen as a direct affront to Sri Lanka’s minority communities who have long been terrorised by the BBS monk and his gang. The appointment of Gnanasara as Chair of the taskforce marks the first time the link between the Gotabaya Rajapaksa wing of the SLPP and the racist monk stands concretely exposed.
The 13-member task force comprises four Muslim representatives including two moulawis but not a single representative from the Tamil community.
The appointment marked the elevation of Gnanasara from “foot-soldier to general” Sri Lankans remarked on Twitter after the news broke.

Colombo Telegraph learns that the decision to appoint Gnanasara as head of this controversial task force might point to President Rajapaksa having ceded near-complete control to his intelligence chief Suresh Sallay.

The State Intelligence Service (SIS) Chief is a long time Gotabaya Rajapaksa ally, and under his presidency, Sallay is the most powerful official in the current Security establishment. Maj. Gen. Suresh Sallay is the operational nerve centre of the Gotabaya Rajapaksa administration, feared by even the President’s closest allies.
The highly skilled intelligence officer had a specific task when Rajapaksa held office as Defence Secretary from 2005-2015, to sow communal tensions in the country in order to keep the ruling family’s electoral prospects steady. At the Directorate of Military Intelligence, then Brigadier Sallay started and nurtured both the Bodu Bala Sena and the Thowfeeq Jamath, which counted among its membership at one point, even the suicide bomber Zahran Hashim. Pitting the two extremist organisations against each other helped to keep the Rajapaksa family’s Sinhalese electoral base fired up and intact. After the Rajapaksa Government fell in 2015, it was revealed that both the BBS and the SLTJ were funded by the Defence Ministry through a slush fund set up for the purpose.
Galagodaaththe Gnanasara is a creation of, and a creature widely linked to, the current SIS chief.
President Sirisena continued to retain Brigadier Sallay as Director of Military Intelligence until the end of 2016. Colombo Telegraph learns that when a military intelligence unit led by Colonel Shammi Kumararatne operating from Giritale was exposed as being behind the Prageeth Eknaligoda abduction in 2010, DMI Director Sallay ensured the Sri Lanka Army paid for high profile attorneys to represent his men.
Colombo Telegraph is now able to reveal that it was then Brigadier Sallay who sent the monk Gnansara to the Homagama Magistrate’s Court, where Ekneligoda’s Habeas Corpus inquiry was unfolding, to hurl insults and slurs against the journalist’s wife in open court. During the raucous incident inside the courthouse, the monk claimed that the entire judicial system was carrying out a LTTE agenda by bringing charges against so-called war heroes. Gnanasara’s intervention in the Homagama Magistrate’s Court was an exercise to discredit Sandya Ekneligoda who has waged a relentless campaign to bring her husband’s abductors to justice, and cast doubt upon her as a LTTE pawn setting out to target military intelligence officers.
Then Homagama Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake, now a High Court judge, filed contempt charges against the monk in the Court of Appeal.
The racist monk’s promotion as Chair of a presidential task force has brought questions back to the fore about whether Gnanasara is being “handled” by his original MI handler. For the first time in his career, Maj. Gen. Sallay is in the spotlight, with the Catholic church now raising questions about his involvement with Easter bomber Zahran Hashim when military intelligence was nurturing this extremist group.
As the Government’s unpopularity mounts, Gnanasara’s entry into the mainstream of the Gotabaya Rajapaksa administration raises grave questions about whether Suresh Sallay has been tasked once more to use the extremist monsters he created nearly a decade ago, to spark communal tensions and violence in order to whip up support for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa within the Sinhalese nationalist constituency. Strictly speaking all religions pave way to the same goal – a way of life leading to non-violence. It is like rivers flowing in all directions and finally ended up in sea. Likewise all the races had their personal laws to suit their customs and traditions and they respected each other. One Law One country is only suitable in countries where a specific race is living. But Sri Lanka is home to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Christians & Catholics. Because of the extremist policies. S.W.R.D.Banadaranayake was eventually assassinated. It cannot be ruled out that because of the One Law One Country, tomorrow mad Gnanasaro Thero will even preach everyone should worship only Lord Buddha. One Law One Country concept was intended to deviate the attention of the public from the high cost of living.

Sumanthiran has not agreed to any such thing. Please note that scrapping the Thesawalamai will be the death blow to the unitary state. Thesawalamai is just a family law of the Jaffna Tamils. Its formed by the basic cultural and religious values and practices of the Tamils, and in practice it forms the functional rules cultural foundation of the Tamils in the northern province. As such its an irrevocable cultural right of the Tamils in the northern province to practice this law. The government meddling with it or scrapping it will totally against international cultural rights laws. Thesawalamai needs some small changes, but that’s something the Tamils must do themselves, as they wish. Its a joke that a commission headed by a Buddhist priest with a highly dubious character gets to decide anything about the Thesawalamai. No wonder the Tamils want a separate state. In the presidential inauguration speech, Gota said it was his ten-year struggle to build a Sinhala Buddhist government. Complementing to it the monk came out and said his project was finished and the list of his projects in the ten years period includes riots, looting, and mob attacks against minority communities using ill-informed, marginalized low cast supporters, who were prepared to commit any violence against minorities to feel recognized under the pretext of protecting the Buddhist nation. These mob attackers got the protection of the state, like that of Zaharan, the convicted criminal who got protection, probably from the so-called Sonic Sonic.
(When the monk mobilizes the margninalized, poor, low caste gangs, the high caste monks are supposed to turn a blind eye to it, otherwise, their privilege over the lower caste segments will be exposed by the monk and it will cause collective shame to the cast preferential system. Nk this island was never exclusively Sinhalese Buddhist. Remember there was a Tamil kingdom in the north and Tamil chieftaincies in the east, that was independent until European colonization and even during the Portuguese and Dutch era, they ruled the Tamil parts of the island as a separate colony. It is thanks to the British that the Sinhalese became the overall majority on the entire island and were able to control the once independent Tamil north and east. It would have been a different story if the Tamils from the north and east were always under Sinhalese rule and subjects of Sinhalese and their laws prior to the arrival of the Europeans but they were not. Therefore their historical traditions and their traditional laws should be respected just as much as the Sinhalese history, tradition and laws. Both are indigenous to the land. Even the religious laws of the Muslims provided they are not in dispute with other laws of the land should be respected.

Just because you are now in a majority in the island either ethnically or religious wise, thanks to the action of a colonial power that had amalgamated lands that were separate and not because it was ancient and historical, does not make it correct to impose your laws, language culture and religion on others. This is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious land and being in the majority does not make it your land only. Each ethnic and religious community has a right to follow its own personal laws with reforms to suit the modern world. Many multi-ethnic and multi-religious countries have different personal laws for different regions, ethnicities and religions.

Duminda a convicted murderer whose appeal was rejected by court was pardoned and a week later appointed as chairman nhda. He tried a land grab in darley road and the supreme court ruled in favor of the petitioner and the nhda was asked to hand back the land. The manner in which both Duminda and Gnanasara are harbored, pardoned, mollycuddled and used with impunity and then unleashed is so similar.

I see Gnanasara priest being slandered for his appointment by the President. Most of the critics would accept any appointment by the President, especially if it is a high position like an ambassador. This appointment of Gnanasara is no fun job, it is trying to create one law for all Sri Lankans , which is far beyond this man’s mental capacity. Trying to do this the man may go mad. If any one is to be criticized it should be the president.
Some are saying Gnansara was imprisoned . The charge was contempt of court, yes, just like Ranjan Ramanayake. To take it as a big issue, is to elevate our judiciary. No one today, respects that.
At least the priests speaks his mind and is not hiding behind some institution. He moves with the people and knows how they feel about certain issues.
Our constitution is being drafted by a shadowy lawyer who has appeared for fees for different people, different parties and conflicting ideologies. Some times he has appeared for the victim and other times for the perpetrator. He himself has no principles.
I personally prefer Gnansara because with him we know what it is about. These slimy lawyers who have no idea of our history, don’t care for the culture, have contempt for the people , will do anything for money are contemptible.

I would disagree there. Ranjan spoke in general terms and 95% would agree with what he said. He said it as a part of the social consciousness.
Gnanassara behaved IN COURT like a thug and openly threatened the Magistrate in the Sandha Ekneligoda’s case. That was personal intervention to subvert justice.
It is further a black mark on SL that one who spoke the truth is still in jail while a thug who directly threatened a Magistrate in open court is pardoned and made to draft laws.

Already the civil, company and criminal law are the same for everyone, only the personal law is different for certain communities like the northern Tamils, Kandyan Sinhalese and Muslims. These come from ancient religious and cultural traditions from these communities and people and should be respected. If there is anything that is medieval or not in keeping with the modern world or human rights these can be reformed and amended. Why all this one country one law and when it never was and was working quite well. Why is a rabid racist who was convicted to head this? Why no Tamil in this so-called committee, despite Tamils being the largest minority, even after more than 2million chased out of the island since independence. What next one county one law then one country, one law, one people, one identity one language and religion only? Arnt there better things to worry about?
