Pathetic Surrender Of Free Speech; BBS Dictates Who Can Hold Protests And Who Can’t

By Vishwamithra1984 –

“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” ~Helen Keller

gnanasara GAThe Colombo Magistrate’s Court issued on Tuesday, August 12, 2104, restraining orders on the Thawheed Jamath, Bodu Bala Sena and Sinhala Ravaya organizations preventing them from holding demonstrations and protests in Colombo and the Colombo Fort area. The demonstrations were scheduled for Wednesday, August 13. The Police making the announcement regarding the said court order stated: “The court order was issued by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court following information given by the Colombo Fort police that demonstrations were planned for today by the Thawheed Jamath, Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) and Sinhala Ravaya (SR) organizations.”

What seems to be a victory for peace is in fact a dangerous alternative to the surrender of two fundamental rights, freedom of movement and freedom of speech assured to all Sri Lankans by our Constitution. Once again the Bodu Bala Sena and its fellow travelers have scored a point. And the Rajapaksas stand to gain at least on two fronts. Firstly, they give an ostensible reason why we must have peace in the midst of our City centers and secondly, they hide their hypocrisy in their Middle-East policy of backing the regime of Israel that is considered the world over as practicing ‘apartheid’, while portraying themselves as supporters of the Palestinian Liberation Movement. Running with the hare and hunting with the hound continues, even on the international stage.

This speaks more of the stranglehold the BBS and other related organizations have over the law and its so-called “keepers”. One might understand- but never justify-why and how the Police could be compromised on matters relating to preserving law and order and taking the side of the powers that be, yet for the Judiciary to issue orders to prevent the holding of peaceful demonstrations just because one party was threatened by another opposing party is inexplicable. The chain of events that were ignited about two years ago with the very formation of the ‘Senas’ and ‘Balakayes’- though they have their own right to be heard and listened to as an essential matter of promise enshrined in the Constitution- could have been checkmated, if not avoided, if the Police Department had the foresight to simply enforce the existing ordinary law in the country. When the Police failed in this fundamental duty and when they decided that applying the laws of the land irrespective of caste, creed and religion would cause displeasure among the powers that be, the design of the mosaic changed and assumed viciously distorted proportions.

The Bodu Bala Sena organization and its main loudhailer assumed heroic dimensions overnight. The whispering campaign picked up bit here and a bit there of newsy material and concluded that the BBS was in fact, a front for a very powerful person close to the Chief Executive in flesh and blood. Thereby, the BBS gained legitimacy by merely being mentioned along with the name of this powerful figure in the ruling clan; furthermore, the very alluring nature of the issues that they adopted for protest gave even more credence to the latent jealousies and hatred that  quite a number of Sinhalese Buddhists felt against other non-Sinhalese Buddhist segments in the country. The anger and hatred so generated is so deep and powerful, an organization that is branded and identified as a vanguard of Sinhalese-Buddhism had to resort to actions sabotaging a very legitimate demonstration organized against the State of Israel, a foreign country whose origins and continuity is written in blood and tears of another oppressed people- the Palestinians. Contradictions are far too many and disregard of these contradictions by those who follow the word of the BBS is even more astounding. It really looks like a blind shepherd leading a blinder flock. Wherever these contradictions and anomalies lead, one does not know but it’s fairly certain that reversing a process that has been unhinged is almost impossible. Politics is a strange game, when one begins to play it. Real human beings are being assumed as mere pawns in the hands of a grand chess master whose moves cannot be read in advance as the very momentum of the game has overtaken the total persona of the player. He is not playing the game anymore; the game seems to be playing him.

This grand design which is being mistakenly identified and branded as ‘strategic-politics’ has become the undoing of a people and of a country. What renders these sinister merchants of power the very ingredients to manipulate and maneuver the subject people and exercise almost unquestioned control over them is mainly founded on a belief that they and only they -the present ruling cabal- have the right and privilege to govern. To facilitate this misnomer, the ‘cabal’ has unlimited resources of cash which primarily provides the tools, man and muscle power for the cool accomplishment of the task at hand.

One would naturally wonder whether all this has been carefully plotted and planed well ahead of time and put into motion by pressing the right button at the right time. No, it does not happen like that. Nobody can plan with such accuracy and foresight. However, when one is trained to ‘think on his feet’, then he can adopt fresh moves when other sub-plots take shape and threaten to direct the main plot away from the original one that was put in place at the beginning. One may grudgingly acknowledge that those who are controlling these Senas and Balakayes are so worthy of such credit- of being masterful in plotting and sub-plotting- yet credit must be bestowed where it is deserved. With the money and muscle power so vast and enviously unlimited, the resources that are available to those who rule today could engineer such a chain of events thinking that they could control it totally. This is where they make a decisive error in judgment. They may control to some considerable degree, but not totally. The flow is too fast and swift, one cannot provide for each and every contingency. When another such crafty plotter enters the scene, he or she should be able to get inside the skin of the main perpetrator and think and act like him and would be able even to go to the extent of forecasting the culprit’s next move.

We might not have among us such a competitive mind today. But as I mentioned in my previous column, if we don’t have one among us today, we should not close the door for a one who might materialize tomorrow or the day after. The need to keep looking elsewhere should not be foreclosed. Arguments and actions for a better alterative should never be foreclosed.

The emergence of Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) as a genuinely brilliant speaker with his usage of the vernacular diction to the utmost, his incisive skills in shattering the opponent’s lopsided stances, the sincerity of purpose that is emanating from his persona, his fearlessness in shredding the opponent to pieces and exposing the opponent’s vulgarity in politics and social ethos have contributed to the fact that Dissanayake enjoys among the free-thinking Sri Lankans a status as a very credible and worthy leader in the country. His ability to put across a very cohesive argument in a very convincing and brave manner has made him, if not the obvious choice for the elusive ‘Common Candidate’ of the Opposition, then at least one of the prime movers of the movement to be built to displace the incumbent from office.

Dissanayake has, on more than one occasion, asked for a halt on the maddening utterances and actions of the BBS and its chief spokesperson, Gnanasara Monk. His, Anura Kumara’s, active and total participation at whatever action program the Opposition undertakes must be secured at any cost, as he seems to be one of the two or three Opposition leaders that have not lost their credibility. One other Parliamentarian who could belong in that list is Arjuna Ranatunga but for whatever reason, he seems to have gone into a self-made shell.

Aside from all the commotion that was initially created by the BBS and its chief protagonist, Gnanasara needs the attention of all reasonably thinking men and women. The most drastic measure that was generated by his actions is not the Aluthgama riots or vandalism of non-Buddhist places of worship. Creating circumstances to obtain a ruling in favor of cancellation of a peaceful demonstration against the inhuman and barbaric military attack on Palestine and the Gaza by Israel in the last few weeks remains the most fundamentally dangerous act of the BBS.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake has much soul searching to do about their past history. He urgently needs review JVP’s own outdated racist ideology, double standards and hypocrisy.

He may sound brilliant however he has to unlearn every thing that he memorised when JVP was under Wijeyweera and Somawansa.

There is an ultimate schemer and plotter in the name of Creator. All who scheme and plot against others fail to realise that there is a Mega Scheme being plotted for them too and it only waits for the opportune moment. When that scheme is executed there will not even be space in gutters or pits for them to hide.History and recent past has many such instances. All these bloody murderous schemers of MARA and Company will taste this bitter pil very soon.Time is with the oppressed not with the oppressor, plunderer and murderer. All put together is MARA.BBS is only a tail of MARA which wags as and when MARA wants it to wag.

Gandassara and his BBS is a lost cause… his NOTORIORITY has faded….. He is just a hog wash now but tries to beat up drums making a noise yet not many hear his BEAT… He had organized a” Pooja” in Keselwatta, Panadura off Diggala Road. last Sunday the 17th August 2014 and a crowd of close to SIX THOUSAND was expected… Muslim community leaders made pleas to the community not to get sucked into a bait thrown at…

He had planned to get off his vehicle and do a procession from a certain point to the Venue of the Pooja, which was a Temple… The Police of the area had been well prepared ( around 500 POLICE personal NO STF or ARMY))for a scenario like the Aluthgama attack… Gandassara was escorted by a LONE motorcycle and a DEFENDER JEEP.. ( wonder why he is given Police escorts? Are other religious Leaders given such escorts? ) He had tried to get off the vehicle and go on a procession… which the Police of the area DID not let him to do. He was taken straight to the venue of the Pooja and a 3 wheeler which had not obtained a permit to use Public address system to call “devotees” of the area had been taken into police custody. Gandassara’s ” Pooja” was an .. leave alone 6000, thee was not even 600. WELL-DONE SARIKKAMULLA/ KESELWATTHA police for taking preventive measures than let a scenario like Aluthgama take place…

Thanks SEA for this update. I was wanting to know more on the outcome of this meeting, since you first wrote about it in the ‘karate kid’ article appearing in this same CT forum.

Finally, it looks like sanity has prevailed, and the ‘Cocky one’ has been made to eat humble pie. But he now talks of a Grand Bodu Samuluwa in Sept. Wonder what that would do to the existing peace.

Anyway, we also saw the clip how he was shunned and superbly handled by a Senior police officer, where he was bundled into his vehicle and whisked off, when he came for an inspection tour in Maligawatte. I am referring to the peaceful protest march against Israeli aggression, organized by just one of his chief protagonists, the young Thauheed Jamaath brigade.

For MR to rebuild on lost trust amongst minority communities will take some doing. But to loose it, it took just a few frenzied moments of sheer madness, brought about through the vicious tongue of a Buddhist monk to unleash such violence and hatred on innocent minorities, whilst an inept police force (so called guardians of the law) did nothing to stop or prevent it. A price for which they will pay dearly very soon.

Foolish Hamas has launched rocket attacks during ceasefire to Israel’s airport. Again they asked for it like Tamil tigers.

Now war will resume. And thousands more Muslims will die. When will Muslims learn to live in peace?

Hamas has disclaimed firing any rockets into Israeli territory, and it is highly probable the same Israeli’s are behind it using proxies. Just similar in deception like the planes crashing into the WTC twin towers, which was engineered to direct all blame, hate and anger against Muslims, whilst they (the jews) remain the darlings of the Americans.

After Hamas and the State of Palestine being at the receiving end through sustained air attacks for so long, combined with untold suffering of displaced families and broken homes, including close to 1,500 of their own already killed by many times compounded Israeli aggression, do you think they still have the strength and courage to keep up the barrage of rocket fire?

The Israeli’s are using the most modern of weaponry, lazer guided precision ‘smart’ bombs to target private homes, hospitals and schools to completely wipe out Palestine off the face of the map.

To put it in perspective, just place SLs’ in the shoes of the Palestinians, for then you will better appreciate the small mercies we all take for granted. Remember this was all originally Palestine land and now usurped and turned into killing fields. How much more unjust can it get?

In the fourth para you say “furthermore, the very alluring nature of the issues that they adopted for protest gave even more credence to the latent jealousies and hatred that quite a number of Sinhalese Buddhists felt against other non-Sinhalese Buddhist segments in the country.”.

Do you have data to support your claim that “quite a number” of Sinhalese Buddhists hate non-Sinhalese Buddhists? Are there studies that show percentages?

Irresponsible claims do not increase the chances of inter-racial harmony regardless of who is ruling the country.

      Dear Sinhalese Buddhist,

The proof is in the pudding. No studies are needed. Just look at our recent history. The murders, looting, pillage, rape and the burning of businesses can all be deemed to emanate through envy. Think about it.

How many Sinhalese Buddhists come out and make a stand against such horror?? It can be deemed once again that those who stand and watch the carnage if not colluding with the marauders are getting a latent pleasure at the plight of the oppressed. Think about it.

      My Dear ‘Sinhalese Buddhist’,
Your identity itself explains who you are. Please tell me, are there any ‘Arahants’ (fully enlightened beings) in this ‘Sinhala Buddhist’ country of yours? Let me educate you, there are a handful of them still in ‘Sorry Lanka’ and they are the ones who practice the true teachings of the ‘Buddha’. You will not find the in the parliament on the streets, clubs, bars, courts, police stations, prisons and so on.

“Do you have data to support your claim that “quite a number” of Sinhalese Buddhists hate non-Sinhalese Buddhists? Are there studies that show percentages”

So, can you figure out the percentage of the “quite a number of Sinhalese Buddhists hate non-Sinhalese Buddhists”?.
Ask your self this question, am I a being with no (Lobha, Dosha, Moha)’Greed, Hatred and Dilution’?. If you are, the you are on the right side of the equation.
      Metta!

      mada pokuna

They all speak much sense when they are in opposition and powerless. You wait until they park their bum on the seat of power, then try telling them what is best for the country you will be lucky if you are not bumped off.

AKD is another Sinhala/Buddhist politician, who sees this country as one nation, Sinhala/Buddhist nation.

He does not believe in “unity in diversity” nor in devolution of power to the regions. He still believes in the old outdated failed idea of Socialism and sees it as the panacea.

He hasn’t address those grave errors JVP committed in the past 42 years and how it connived with MR, JHU, Sarath de Silva to undermine law and order in this land.

    Vishwamithra,

    Good write up.

I agree, ‘the game seems to be playing him’.

AKD may have good intentions. But in a country where murder and mayhem is part and parcel of the persona of the vested interests, I doubt if he and his following will not face the same fate as those JVPs of the two previous insurrections.

    Video: BBS raps Mervyn

Interesting scene developing.. this may be a case of DOG eat DOG… lets see where this takes the turn..and who is BOSS… now the ball is on Mervin and his son Malaka’s court…

Can Galabodaththe hold a ” Pooja” in and around Kelaniya? the way he held ” POO JAR’s ” in Aluthgama and Keselwaththe, Panadura..

    Daily Mirror Tuesday, 19 August 2014 16:48

    Video: BBS raps Mervyn

Minister Mervyn Silva should correct himself first before making allegations against others, the General Secretary of Bodu Bala Sena Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera said today.

“We would like to invite Minister Silva to set himself right and then to correct his son instead of accusing others,” the Thera told a news conference as a response to a question posed by media.

Earlier, during a meeting with the Mahanayakes Minister Silva had criticised the language used by BBS monks in the recent past. The Thera said that they knew how to approach and use language suitable for different factions.

“We know which language to use when talking to humans, gods and criminals,” he said. “There have been court jesters like Andere by the side of Kings in history. They keep entertaining people. The history is repeating itself,” the Thera said.

HERE CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS ARE AGAINST BBS TRYING TO PROTECT SINHALA BUDDHISTS.

READ BELOW AND SEE HOW THOSE WHO CARRIED OUT CRUSADES, FOR CENTURIES AND KILLED MILLIONS, ARE TALKING AGAIN ATTACKING THE AGGRESSOR IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE THEIR CIVILIOZATION.

Pope Francis offered tacit approval of the use of force to stop the strife in northern Iraq, but stopped short of endorsing the U.S. military strikes, warning that any such move must first earn the support of the international community.

During a news conference on the flight back from a five-day tour of South Korea, the pope said that “it is right to stop an unjust aggressor,” but warned that “no single nation can judge how one stops” the violence.

The remarks are effectively a repudiation of the unilateral strikes by U.S. jets, drones and bombers in Iraq that began over the weekend.

The pontiff’s remarks tamp down speculation in recent days that the Holy See would endorse U.S. military action in northern Iraq, in the wake of news that Islamic fighters have driven tens of thousands from their homes, forced Christians and other religious minorities to convert to Islam and destroyed Christian burial places.

Senior church leaders in Iraq have endorsed unilateral strikes to protect religious minorities, including Christians.

Last week, Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, the Holy See’s ambassador to the United Nations, told Vatican Radio that once every other means of stopping the conflict has been attempted, “all the force that is necessary to stop this evil and this tragedy” is justified under the U.N. charter.

“How many times have powers used the excuse of stopping an unjust aggressor to conquer a nation?” he asked. “The means with which you stop (the violence) have to be considered.” The pope said he would be willing to travel to the area, but said “it isn’t best” at the moment.

The remarks recall St. John Paul II’s forceful opposition to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and Pope Francis ‘ own opposition to strikes last year against Syria in the wake of chemical attacks. The Catholic Church countenances a “just war,” but under narrow conditions.
