its VERY NICE TO SEE CMB TELEGRAPH REPORTING ON ‘APPOINTED PEOPLE FOR JOBS BY THE NEW GOVERNMENT’ YET ANYONE READING CMB TELEGRAPH WOULD THINK THIS IS THE ONLY PERSON yet CMB try to highlight it as a controversial one i suspect.. (my personal view).. BUT THE SERIOUS QUESTION IS WHY CMB TELEGRAPH did not give EQUAL Coverage of the Removal of the Miliraty and appointment of a civilian Governor of the North.. I mean for almost 2 years CMB telegraph ran with the Story of the Military Governor of the North and The reasons why he should be changed, and Why MR did not change etc etc etc.. FOR TWO YEARS?? yet when the TNA demand was met not even a mention on CMB Telegraph??? And the most IMPORTANT A HOST OF TAMIL SRI LANKANS TO IMPORTANT STATE POSITIONS.. NOT EVEN A MENTION from CMB telegraph why why why does CMB telegraph Self censor on certain Progressive issues??? Dear Readers over to U

              Malaka ,

Why don’t you get it , CT is owned and operated by private individuals like sirasa, Derana et al ,so CT has every right to publish or not to publish news items which they think suitable for their readers , who do you think you are to dictate terms and conditions for CT ? if you think CT is a piece of junk , why on earth you are wasting your time here ? as for me CT is the best , i criticized them bitterly number of times in the past ( kicking out Dr wicrama Bahu , witch hunting for Dr sarawanamuththu etc ) , whereas your intentions are purely political , you represent the former regime and trying to sling mud at uvindu , Uvindu being a gentleman let you to pollute this site , but if i were uvindu , i would kick you out without thinking twice !

@srilal.. Opinion and News are two Different terms.. In News people always CONFRIM a story and the Sourcse.. But today Journalism if it can be called that these days.. has been manipulated to Creative Bias mixed with half truths.. I dont need to sling MUD’ CMB telegraph@ and people like u do a good Job.. And Please dont even compare Respected News Orgs to colombo telegraph.. When has news Orgs turned as Campaigners?? As we have seen many Campaigns run here what suites them.. CMB should Report True and accurate News and let the Reader be the Judge.. Not state Media style properganda.. CMB telegraph is quick to report news from a Looney Twitter account (national security) and ran with the GOTA and Maldives story.. (if u see this looneys twitter time line he has accused CIA for paris attack enough said).. Yet when it came to Reuters a Reputed News Int reporting Indian RAW involment in our local election’s not a word. DO u consider Tamilnet a NEWS Org??? DO u even know the meaning of NEWS??? I just dont like the blatant duplicity CMB telegraph argues againt others when it is worse. And as long as they have ‘Truth and Journalism’ in their motto and broadcast here, i will challenge that lie.

          malaka,

So what is the big deal here? The Military Governor’s removal was a pain in the ass those days and now that it has been solved why the hell are you jumping up and down in ass pain? CT knows what is news and what is not news better than you. The problem is with racists like you who have lost everything after the demise of rogue Rajapakshas.

@Justice.. HOW MANY PROGRESSIVE to do with the NORTH has been reported here??? infact how many nEWS iTEMS SINCE THE ELECTION RE THE NORTH have been reported since???? YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THE north of sri Lankan never existed.. But just Prior to the elections it was All about the North and nothing else.. MY POINT WHY???? why when promises and Progressive steps have been taken to heal the national problem its not reported???? yet before it was all negative (even though some good was alos done, never reported)..DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY TAMILS HAVE ALSO BEEN APPOINTED TO IMPORTANT POST?? IT ONLY FAIR QUESTION to ask why certain news make headlines DONT U THINK???

          • 1

@Justice.. ITS the ‘MORAL’ thing to do to report the NEWS even the pain in the ‘ass’. cant be ‘moral’ about certain stories and not report about others no matter how much pain in the ‘ass’ then thats not news it’s opinion

I agree with Paul completely. Already there are signs that the sirisena’s are not above nepotism and corruption. The fact that they have 12 in the family is dangerous! Chandrika and Ranil must stop this now itself!!

        Dear Paul,

I think the appointment is ill advised and is wrong. Especially because eradicating Nepotism was an Election promise. But there are many other factors that come into play.

SLT owns and controls most of the communications infrastructure with the outside world, including marine cables (at one time they had the monopoly).

SLT has the monopoly on wire line connections.

The major part of International incoming phone traffic comes via SLT. This is a major money spinner and a veritable gold mine.

SLT is a major player in IPTV

Mobitel is a major player in mobile communications and is a subsidiary of SLT

We saw SLT power when programs like “Satana” was blocked by both SLT and Dialog.

The previous regime has entrenched itself within almost all important institutions. SLT is no exception. Hence choosing someone with integrity from within is not an easy task specially when working within a 100 day program that is of utmost political importance (winning the next election depends on keeping the 100 day promises).

Maithree would have done better by selecting someone who would push his anti corruption drive within SLT other than a family member.

        Kind Regards,
        OTC

          6

          Hi OTC,

I did not realise that SLT controlled marine cables. You are right, Maithri would have been wiser to select someone else. It is not a good portent of things to come.

I wonder whether five years from now everybody will be complaining about nepotism, corruption and the cost of living and harking back to the ‘Good old Rajapakse days’. They may be saying things like “After all, he did win the war and no nation is totally incorrupt”. Tarzie Vittachi’s Republic of Amnesia.

People make mistakes, but if public will protest against, they will replace the candidate with one another qualified person. So there will be no problems akin to your MAHINDA Rajapakshes who had nothing in his than filling his APEMINIHA not respecting the Mahajanaya. Telling something palatable and doing the opposite was his natural talent. But today he is among highly corrupted men on this earth being fallen that deep of the silo struggling to come out.

You need to look at the CV in relation to the JOB. CV could be good but is it good for this JOB. What is his experience in Telecommunication and IT industry. He is going to be in the Board of SLT will he be able to function in the best interest of the company. I would say his experience not enough for the SLT.

By the way, the President may not have involved in this appointment. It could be the Subject Minister for telecommunication who appointed this person in the hope of getting some favours from president!!!

        3

I personally think for the post of Chairman he does not need to have a CV that dotted with Telco & IT qualifications. A chairman is someone who is considered a Visionary and is able to show leadership.

Secondly if you take leading companies in the world, most of them are led by people with Finance Backgrounds, its something that the Chairman has abundant experience.

        • 4
          0

Telecom business is little complicated than other buying and selling business or manufacturing. The board would be discussing and making critical decisions… What would be the contribution of the chairperson??

You cannot call him Finance Professional because his highest professional Qualification in that area appears to be AAT not a CA/ACMA/ACCA

None of the world leading technological companies are run by technical professional, at least in the last 20~30 years. Only exceptions are Japan and Taiwan, some big companies are still run by CEOs with technical background. US and West were the same some 40~50 years back.

              – Do you mean Vodafone, Verizon, Apple and Microsoft? – Have a look at Chairman Profile of these!!

Even if some companies’ chairpersons are without Telecommunication and IT related qualification, they would have vast experience in the industry throughout their career!

President’s Brother has been parachuted into this Position. Now other ministers can start with their Ayyas and Mallies!

            6

            Dear Summa,

You are right. Telecom is far more complicated than what people generally think. It is a High tech centric business. That said, it is pertinent to ask whether it was run profitably under the previous Chairmanship.

The previous Chairman was absolutely not a technocrat but SLT was profitable under him.

In an earlier comment I stated that appointing a sibling was a grave error on the PR front. But Sirisena has declared that he is not interested in a second term. Hence PR takes a back burner in his decision making.

As I have mentioned earlier SLT owned and controlled the communications infrastructure of SL as a Govt Monopoly. Today it still owns and controls the major part of communications infrastructure and a near monopoly on the Marine cable infrastructure. The Cable head is 100% owned by SLT (we had major problems in International communications including the internet, just a few years ago because SLT’s marine cables had a breakdown).

International calls is very big business and it is a goldmine exploited by bigwigs with the connivance of phone companies. If you watched Satana a couple of days back you would have heard one of the participants talking about an “E1” and the involvement of 4 people in cheating the country big time. This cannot be done without the connivance of the Telephone operators. It is white collar crime that only a few people know of.

From what we have seen and heard so far, Sirisena’s core aim is rooting out corruption. This appointment may look from the surface as going against that.

Depending on how the Sirisena sibling perform in eradicating entrenched corruption within SLT, we will get to know whether this decision was wise or not.

Sirisena is not interested in PR as he is not working towards a second term in office. He seems to be putting Country before anything else.

            Kind Regards,
            OTC

agreed , His CV doesn’t carry much weight to be appointed as the chairman of Sri lanka’s premier Telecom provider , ideal person should have a P.hD (Engineering) coupled with a Good MBA + years of Telecom experience . this is bad for MY3 as well SLT.

He received a Ph.D. in Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management in 1991 for his thesis titled “Essays on Banking”.[6]Raghuram Govind Rajan (Madya Predesh not Tamil Nadu)
In 2005, at a celebration honoring Alan Greenspan, who was about to retire as chairman of the US Federal Reserve, Rajan delivered a controversial paper that was critical of the financial sector.[11] In that paper, “Has Financial Development Made the World Riskier?”, Rajan “argued that disaster might loom.”[12] Rajan argued that financial sector managers were encouraged to “take risks that generate severe adverse consequences with small probability but, in return, offer generous compensation the rest of the time. These risks are known as tail risks. But perhaps the most important concern is whether banks will be able to provide liquidity to financial markets so that if the tail risk does materialize, financial positions can be unwound and losses allocated so that the consequences to the real economy are minimized.”
The response to Rajan’s paper at the time was negative. For example, former U.S. Treasury Secretary and former Harvard President Lawrence Summers called the warnings “misguided” and Rajan himself a “luddite”.[13] However, following the 2008 economic crisis, Rajan’s views came to be seen as prescient; by January 2009, The Wall Street Journal proclaimed that now, “few are dismissing his ideas.”[12] In fact, Rajan was extensively interviewed on the global crisis for the Academy Award winning documentary film Inside Job. Rajan wrote in May 2012 that the causes of the ongoing economic crisis in the U.S. and Europe in the 2008–2012 period were substantially due to workforce competitiveness issues in the globalization era, which politicians attempted to “paper-over” with easy credit. He proposed supply-sidesolutions of a long-term structural or national competitiveness nature: “The industrial countries should treat the crisis as a wake-up call and move to fix all that has been papered over in the last few decades… Rather than attempting to return to their artificially inflated GDP numbers from before the crisis, governments need to address the underlying flaws in their economies. In the United States, that means educating or retraining the workers who are falling behind, encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation, and harnessing the power of the financial sector to do good while preventing it from going off track. In southern Europe, by contrast, it means removing the regulations that protect firms and workers from competition and shrinking the government’s presence in a number of areas, in the process eliminating unnecessary, unproductive jobs.”[14]
Most engineers are into Finance and management for their masters because lefty politicians have destroyed – at the end of the day one needs money to survive not let pigs/politicans run our lives.

CT was always accessible from Lanka though it was blocked by SLT’s and possibly Dialog’s DNS (I write to and read CT from Lanka). You only had to use a public DNS like Google’s 8.8.8.8. I believe this was ordered by the TRC.

Previously Sri Lanka Guardian was blocked and was only available from Lanka by using a Proxy site. Now a proxy is no longer needed and it can be directly accessed. Hopefully most of the previously unavailable sites would be available now.

Tamilnet unfortunately remains blocked and you need a Proxy to read it.

        Kind Regards,
        OTC

      Dear Mr.Pallewatta Gamaralalage Kumarasinghe Sirisena,

I like your qualifications. You certainly are qualified, and nobody should challenge you on your qualifications and ability.

Your Name Gamaralalage adds further credibility.

Now, if you compare your qualifications to that of the Former Sri Lankan airlines Chairman, the Brother in law of Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, who did not even pass the GCE OL ( Many claim,), you are over qualified, but it is all right being over qualified.

Oh dear, was nobody else available? Not only should nepotism not take place, it must be SEEN not to take place. So someone else should have been appointed unless this guy was the best man for the job. If he was the best, then a full explanation should have been published.

It is quite simple. He stays where he was at the State Timber Corp.

If he was the best man for SLT the Government (which now runs the Daily Noise)could explain why in that paper. The President would have been praised all round for this. Instead, he is now being tarred with the Rajapakse brush. Well what can you expect? He was Rajapakse’s minister for years.

At least some one who has some qualification has been appointed unlike the grade8s in the previous regime. We should not paint this appointment with political brush. We need to find people from Sri Lanka.

The same train, same journey only change is family??????

Mr. President of Sri Lanka, this is not the right time for you to look after your family in political appointments. This is the same argument former president had when it come to appointment of his brother Gota.

We need a process based, systematic fire wall between political appointment of family members of politicians. Appointment of Chairman should have a process and should be based on required competencies and it should be transparent process from the inception to end.

Here the question is not about the competency of the president’s brother. But about having a best recruitment and selection process in a transparent manner which we call as good governance.

Also just fixing back those removed by MR alone will not become good governance. Those appointments in the past 60 years being conducted by governments without having a transparent protocol.

Lets not accept any thing against former regime as it is good governance. Lets think objectively and freshly leaving politics in seeking good governance.

Selecting single handedly without due process even a person who is Having qualification among 20 million citizen living country is not at all good governance.

This is the same process followed for Gota and Basil.

    • 8
      5

Gota and Basil were just O/L qualified in Sri Lanka and experience in working as a Gas station attendant and 7-Eleven store keeper in USA.

Do not compare those morons for anyone else.

        Mati-Lda Ella-Polla

Where do you learn your logic my dear?

We are not comparing this action with the previous administration. What MARA did is irrelevant to this appointment.

Was the process to appoint this Sirisena fair and reasonable? Has he got the relevant and right experience to run the SLT? He may have a half dozen of degrees however it does not mean that he should have this position. If he has been reinstated to the previous position, there is no issue with that.

To an independent observer, this appointment by the subject minister is a typical ball-polish activity to please of his master, Wanni Gamaya My3. Early signs of “Yaha Palanaya” are well exhibited in this appointment.

        God bless Mother Lanka!!!!!!!!!

The CV looks suitable for the posting, but would he have got the opportunity if his brother wouldn’t have been the President. That is the Million Dollar question.

Why not appoint a panel to look into the best possible candidate for top posts. That would do a world of good for the YAHA PALANAYA.

Appointments like these would look very biased, otherwise and also will leave room for favoured appointments.

Let all these appointments be on merits and not on connections. Let it be a new chapter in our political culture.

      A good suggestion…

Also i think state companies should be enlisted in Stock exchange while gove holds 55% of shares. Poeple should be able to buy shares and board of directors should be appointed in the manner other stock listed companies operate.

Sri Lankan and other companies can also use a similar structure.

I have the same question for Maithiri.

However if we go by Namal Rajapakse’s observation reported on NDTV, without the entire clan’s closeness and participation the war against LTTE could not have been won.

Please for a moment ignore the 30,000 Sinhala village youth who sacrificed their life for the stupidity of their leaders.

    1) Who actually is in charge of appointing the SLT chairman?
If it is Maithiri or those directly connected to him then this does not bode well

Even if a family member is qualified, they must be overlooked because of conflict of interest and the suspicions that will invariably rise amongst the public.

          15

yes partly for good governance..The reasons i voted for are,

          1. Constitutional reforms,
          2. Rule of law,
          3. Better foreign affairs with diplomatic handling of UN
          4. Humane approach to Northern province,
          5. Better economic policies
          6. Stopping white elephant projects
          7. Concerns for loss making public entities like SriLankan, Ceypetco, etc.
          8. Nepotism
          9. and ridding the country of the problem called Mahinda Rajapakse
          10. Punishing those who stole public money like Cabraal, Basil and Sajin..

Am i hopeful? Yes and the new government has acted according to that mostly.
Are they things i do not approve?
Yes of course. The appointment of this man is one among them.

But i am not immature to think everything will become good and every problem will be solved from 9th. But one thing i can say the country is in right track.

When those who ignored nepotism of mahinda and when he appointed his family members to important positions now are beginning to have an eye on good governance. In other words Mahidna supporters are also worried about good governance which they did not do for 10 years.

Isnt that itself a sign of improvement?

I’d like to comment on reader Srinath Guneratne’s observations. Forget the sublime levels you mention to, in present Sri Lanka. I was present and saw interviews and automatic selections in that Parliamentary High Posts charade. One Corporation head did not have even 8th standard
qualifications. It beats me how the man got past this Committee – as he could not even speak intelligently. I was later told he was used by his corrupt Minister to ask a Corporation, under the latter, to meet the cost of a big Tamasha the Minister was giving – to buy the media. The sum asked was close to a million. The Chairman of that Corporation did not go along. So the Minister sent our friend as emissary. He asked the Chairman (both knew each other for sometime) “What is the problem. You are the Chairman here. Why don’t you simply issue a cheque and forget any trouble to you with the Minister” ??? Needless to say the man did not either know and/or understand anything about Audit queries, the AR/FR “nonsense”

I am afraid, even from the Sirisena Govt. we will hear the old refrain of square pegs in round holes and the various comedies that will flow from there. Old habits take long to die. Sri Lanka is unlikely to get out of the rot she got into from the post-1956 “People’s Revolution”
      era.

If I was the President, I would have avoided this appointment even if the Brother had supremely high qualifications and experience – particularly in the initial stages of the scandal-rocked post-Rajapake era.

Why do you all write about his bloody qualifications? Is he the best man for the job? That is all that matters. Qualifications are no substitute for proven ability.

We Sri Lankans have an obsession with qualifications. What qualifications did Ranasinghe Premadasa have? Yet he was a very hard working and efficient man. Please don’t start writing irrelevant nonsense about his alleged crimes. We are discussing his efficiency.

To run a Multi million Dollar telecom company , one needs to have the right qualifications and relevant job experience & exposure , you can’t possibly compare with extreme cases like R Premadasa running SL .

He has also obtained a Postgraduate degree in Information Technology from the University of Colombo in 1992.” http://www.siww.com.sg/speakers-participants/gotabaya-rajapaksa

              Dear Jaadi,

You want to bring the previous discussion that you failed miserably, over to this discussion? That is idiotic on your part but I welcome it.

Were you able to find the meaning of “Presence” used by the ICC Statute in defining a Human Shield? You failed to do so though you posted about 20 comments skirting the issue.

Definitely that First world First class education that you brag about incessantly is not what you posses as you can’t even refer to an English Dictionary.

              ICC Statute
              (xxiii) Utilizing the presence of a civilian or other protected person to render certain points, areas or military forces immune from military operations;

The LTTE used the PRESENCE of civilians to protect themselves.

However the UNSG’s POE exonerated the LTTE of that war crime disregarding the ICC Statute which is the International Law, vide POE report section 237.

Hence the UNSG’s POE is corrupt and most probably had been bribed by the current advocates of separation.

Dear readers will Jaadi give an intelligent rebuttal?

      S.R.H. Hoole ,

“” I also remember reading that he worked in the IT field. Perhaps we should be fair in our criticism and just stick to calling him a murderer. “2

Speculation is because he is a American national who has run away with stacks of money belonging to them all that was swindled, using terrorist like Dick Cheney, Blair Bush etc. Who is the terrorist?? All men on men on both sides are terrorist- one has the authority of stupid people who vote and call it democracy and the stupid opposite- race, religion, culture etc.

In the US the Salvation Army is doing the job of employing prisoners about to leave as `fitters of metal parts(repetitive jobs)` because society shuns them. Similar case scenario with the US Marine on return (B2B training to fitters)
2008 Blue chip Siemens US did not fill 600 vacancies for fitters but awaited the return of the marines from Iraq while unemployment was on the rise. Max. H1B visas issued at Chennai US embassy. According to managers, the average Vietnamese woman from the paddy fields works 3 times faster than the average American of today. Yet `Army discipline` is what the industry needs when it’s a case of `repetitive jobs`. So that is how he got into IT firm with references from embassy.
Righty tighty lefty loosey is what fitters are taught not the clockwise therefore he used abusive language F word on journalist.

Why is it that jobs are sent to China- go see even the general restaurant worker has to exercise lunch time- its official so that they may not go to the pub or slack.
Goo`ta attempted same discipline with Principals of schools etc. now that they have got rid of the missionary schools which provided that with a master of discipline.

So just calling him a murderer is not accurate. Big Foot with foot in mouth ambude kolla he needs a steel pipe up his to take away his golden gun and dosh.

This is nothing short of nepotism for there is no evidence of selection by an independent selection committee regardless of the candidate’s perceived suitability.

I am disgusted but not surprised.

  • 10

Here we go again. go Maithreepala go.

Is his brother the only suitable person for the job? Even if he is, why not follow the due process and get selected.

Does the brother not have enough responsibilities already?

By the way how many brothers and sisters does Maithreepala have?

This my friends is not a step in the right direction for sure. Sri Lankans are watching.

Let Greed not mislead Maithreepala astray, just as Mara was led astray.

Greed my friend will put us all in the same mess that we are trying to get out of.

Please Mr. Maithreepala go back to your basics and read a few lines from the scriptures and listen to some bana and do the right thing for the sake of the suffering people of this harmless nation.

      Dear Sharmini,

“This man might have been the ideal man for the job,”

Not sure that the brother would be ideal even if he was not a relative but he should not have risked a charge of nepotism by appointing a sibling.

It is a potential PR blunder depending on whether this brother proves to be the lynchpin of rooting out corruption from SLT. Then again Maithree may not be interested in PR as he has declared he has no designs on a second term.

There may be other considerations that I have touched upon above at this link.

              Hi Jaadi,

The discussion is about the ICC Statute. Specifically the War Crime of using a Human Shield and the conclusion that the UNSG’s POE arrived at in exonerating the LTTE.

It has nothing to do with your WMD hallucinations or wet dreams!!!

Apparently your confused pea brain cannot comprehend that.

              Read it again please.

              ICC Statute
(xxiii) Utilizing the presence of a civilian or other protected person to render certain points, areas or military forces immune from military operations.

However the UNSG’s POE exonerated the LTTE of that war crime disregarding the ICC Statute which is the International Law, vide POE report section 237.

I am afraid that your toilet English is ill equipped to unravel that.

Good luck with your next attempt.
You must be close to the 40th try but you are not even close.

After all Maithiri was with MR for more than 10 years. He must have learned the “trick of the trade” from him. May be sri Lankans have to tolerate this kind of nepotism for another 10 years or more!!

The fact that Maithri has eleven siblings makes this even more frightening!!!

  • 2

I understand the concerns especially when we challenge nepotism. Few thing to clear!
is he the own brother and not a cousin ‘malli’.
did he get involved in canvassing for MS or ? MR??
on one hand a relationship does not necessarily make someone ineligible!
Is he the most suitable guy available?
If not, find a suitable person but has to be trustworthy? ..????
Mr. President, try to avoid nepotism! Please….We went to “kade” using the nepotism card!
