Nine organizations representing Sri Lankan Muslims living in Australia have issued a joint statement urging the Australian government to reconsider their decision to allow Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary, Galagoda Atte Gnanasara to visit the country.

The Collective of organizations representing Sri Lankan Muslims living in Australia, in a letter to Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop and Australian Minister of Immigration and Border Control Scott Morrison, has urged for a reconsideration of the decision to grant visa for Gnanasara to visit Australia under the pretext of a ‘spiritual awakening mission’ based on Buddhism.
The Collective that has drawn the Ministers’ attention on the recent anti-Muslim riots in Southern Sri Lanka that Gnanasara is accused of having instigated, points out he should not be allowed into Australia as he fails to pass the character test defined in Section 501 (06) of the Migration Act of 1958.
They have asserted that Gnanasara’s association with a group that has been suspected of criminal conduct and the possibility of his arrival in Australia inciting discord in the local community and resulting in a segment of the Australian community being vilified, have compromised Gnanasara’s credibility to enter Australia.
They have also shed light on Gnanasara’s close association with the extremist Burmese monk Ashun Wirathu and his infamous role in inciting hatred on the Muslim community in Sri Lanka since 2012.
Furthermore, they have stated that against the backdrop of several countries including the UK, US and France denying access for Gnanasara to visit the respective states, Australia too should follow the ‘well considered lead set by the other countries’.

The Bodu Bala Sena (BBS – translated as the Buddhist Power Force) is a radical Sinhalese Buddhist nationalist organisation based in Colombo, Sri Lanka that was formed during 2012. The BBS seeks the enforcement of Buddhist predominance in Sri Lanka. It has organised various campaigns against the country’s minority Muslim and Christian communities which, according to the organisation, poses a threat to Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese-Buddhist identity. The BBS engages in hate speech and attacks against minority religions. Its headquarters are located at Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Mandira in Colombo. Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Mandira is owned by the Buddhist Cultural Centre, an organisation founded by Kirama Wimalajothi.
Ethnicity and religion are closely linked in Sri Lanka, with the Sinhalese majority predominantly Buddhist, the Tamils mostly Hindu, and Muslims regarded as a separate ethnic group.
ASSOCIATION WITH SRI LANKA GOVERNMENT
Allegations persist that the BBS enjoys a close relationship with the Sri Lanka government and has seemingly been immune from prosecution. These allegations mainly relate to the Sri Lankan President’s brother, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who is regarded as a patron of the BBS. During March 2013, he officiated at the opening of a BBS cultural centre at the port city of Galle, currently used as training centre by the BBS.
LEADERSHIP
The BBS was founded by monks Kirama Wimalajothi and Galagoda Gnanasara after they broke away from Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) claiming it was not militant enough in protecting Buddhism. Kirama Wimalajothi and Gnanasara are leader and general secretary of BBS respectively.

On 23rd Feb 2011 ABC reported that researchers from universities across Australia say polled thousands of people and found out by and large Australians are racists. Anti-Muslim sentiment was even higher. 50 per cent of Australians identify themselves as anti-Muslim.
In September 2007 there were 19 organisations designated and banned by Australian courts for active involvement in terrorism. All but one of those organisations are Muslim. How many Muslims from Sri Lanka living in Australia are allied with them, I do not know.

Upul, You need to get your facts right. It was not an Australian who called a cricketer from the sub continent a ‘monkey’. It was the Indians, maybe, Harbhajan Singh, in particular, who was accused of referring to the Australian cricketer of English/West Indian descent, Andrew Symonds, by that term.
Secondly, if you look at things objectively – and carefully – you will find the Australians are no more racist than are the Sri Lankans. Make no mistake, the SLs are as racist as they come.
‘I am no muslim’ is spot on. The Muslims have not made themselves popular in Australia and for that, they have only themselves to blame. It would do them well to take a good look at themselves and ask why, and set about putting things right.
The first thing that struck me when I read this article was that the letter asking for a visa to the Rev Gnanasara to be cancelled, was signed by nine associations representing SL Muslims in Australia, when there are only six Australian States and two self governing territories. Looking at the signatories I find there are four associations from Victoria, three from New South Wales and one each from Western Australia and Queensland. Pray, tell me, why do you need four associations in Victoria to represent the SL Muslims in that State, or three in New South Wales?
Sadly, the Muslims, like other ethnic groups from SL, the Sinhalese and the Tamils, have seen fit to form their own separate associations in every State in Australia – and sometimes, as we see here, more than one in each State. So, what we see is the continuation in Australia of the polarization from back in SL. I don’t believe these are healthy developments. Those who migrate to other lands from SL, should try to integrate and identify with the countries of their adoption and become committed and loyal citizens of those countries.
These nine associations will no doubt be aware that Australia is a liberal democracy. Unlike Saudi Arabia or even Sri Lanka, Australia is not paranoid about dissent. It has enough self belief and confidence to be tolerant of differing views. So, if Australia should allow the Rev Gnanasara to enter Australia, the SL Muslims in Australia should not be overly upset or feel that the Australian government is not appreciative of their feelings. A healthy democracy is tolerant of differing views and does not over react to situations.
Also, at a practical level, the SL Muslims in Australia should ask themselves what real harm the Rev Gnanasara can do to them. I would venture to say, that he will do no harm whatever to the cause of the SL Muslims in Australia, or to the SL Hindus or Christians in Australia. Ironically at it were, the one group of SLs in Australia that he could hurt are the SL Buddhists. The non SL Australians may well regard the Rev Gnanasara as another Buddhist monk and as being a representative of the Buddhist religion. They may not be aware or take the trouble to find out if he was in fact a true representative of the Buddhist faith. In that situation, his intemperate statements may show Buddhism – incorrectly – in poor light. So, if there is one group of SLs in Australia who should want the Rev Gnanasara’s visa cancelled, it should be the SL Buddhists there. They are the ones who are potentially most likely to suffer from a visit by him.
But all things considered, my view is that he should be allowed to visit Australia, unimpeded. I think it will do a world of good for people like him to visit liberal democracies like Australia and see for themselves that Sri Lanka, wonderful and great as it is, is not the entire planet of ours, that there are other civilisations and other ways of life that are different to the SL way but which are just as noble and just as decent and just as attractive. It would be good for those like him to see at first hand, what the rest of the world is really like. The experience may well make them more tolerant. And we’d all gain if it would open their eyes and teach them to look at things differently and from beyond the narrow perspective of the proverbial frog in the well.

You make a very valid point that only the Sinhala Bhuddists in Australia are going to be immensely harmed by such a visit just like it has harmed the Sinhala Buddhists immensely in Sri Lanka and world over. However as for the number of Muslim organizations, It demonstrates that as a free country people can form associations for what ever reason they feel fit as long as their activities are legal. As such I see no reason to believe it is some form of division. I think your point is moot since they seem to have all voiced their concern as one in a single letter. It maybe that they have done so in order to make sure their close friendships with other Sinhalese Bhuddists friends are not destroyed by a hate mongerer poisoning their minds there by bring the garbage the’ve grown back in Sri Lanka nearer to their new homes. Australia should allow Reverend Galaboda Ganasara Thero to visit Australia
Australia is a democratic, egalitarian society and country. I request and hope that that the Australian Government should not put any restrictions on travel visa issued to the Reverend Galaboda Ganasara Thero.
As a Sinhalese Buddhist, I have the back bone to say that Reverend Galaboda Ganasara Thero has highlighted very important events happening in Sri Lanka on ‘Arabisation of Sri Lanka’ project carried out by some extremist ethnic groups in Sri Lanka.
I also wish to highlight that there have never been a serious threat to the Australian interest or Australian security from Buddhists or Sri Lankan Buddhist monks. I also suggest that the Australian government is more worried these days about extremist jihadists operating in Australia than the Buddhists or Buddhist monks.
I appeal from the Australian Government to discard this letter and allow Galaboda Ganasara Thero to visit Australia and explain the campaign and awareness program carried out by the Sri Lankan Buddhist Organisations against the extremist ethnic tribal groups operating in Sri Lanka.
