Anti-Muslim Assaults In Teldeniya: Kandy Under Curfew, Police On Alert As BBS Shows Up

The arrival of Buddhist monk Galagoda Atte Gnanasara of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) and Dan Priyasath who calls himself ‘Savior of the Sinhalese’ to pay last respects to a Sinhala man who succumbed to injuries sustained when beaten up by a group of Muslims has raised fears of imminent communal clashes in Teldeniya and other places in the Kandy District.

Sudarshana Gunawardena, Director General, Department of Government Information, told Colombo Telegraph that a curfew was imposed in the Kandy District and the Police put on alert to ensure that the enforcement of the law proceeds without hindrance and the situation does not spiral into an inter-communal conflagration.

“The Government appeals to all parties and especially the general public to act with responsibility and remain calm. The suspects have been arrested and the law will take its course,” Gunawardena said.

It is reported that a Hartal was declared in Digana, Teldeniya, Udispattuwa and Medamahanuwara protesting the attack. The Police and STF were deployed to bring the situation under control after twp shops in Moragahamulla were set on fire by angry mobs. Twenty-four people suspected of involvement in these acts of violence have been arrested by the Teldeniya police so far.

The victim, M.G. Kumarasinghe (41), a resident of Ambala in Medamahanuwara, had been undergoing treatment for a week at the Kandy Teaching Hospital after the assault and succumbed to his injuries last night.

The altercation had taken place allegedly when a group of men, later identified as Muslims, had been angered due to the victim not allowing them to overtake his vehicle. Another version has the victim accidentally hitting the side mirror of the vehicle in which the assailants were travelling but had not stopped to sort the matter out.

There is no evidence whatsoever that the assault was racially motivated. The assailants, all residents of Ambagahalanda, Digana were arrested by the police while a three-wheeler was also taken into custody.

Gnanasar and Priyasath, both representing extremist groups, are currently on bail over cases where they are accused of inciting communal violence against the Muslim community. Gnanasara Thero and the BBS, in particular, played a leading and violent role in the Aluthgama riots a few years ago.

ThanthaiChelva, it was not Tamils you moron it was the LTTE! ask your boss Mahinda Rajapaksa why he is protecting K.P and Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan AKA Karuna Amman!?

Please Ask him to take action against these LTTE members…
We the people want them brought to justice too…

Remember this has nothing to do with ethnicity or Religion or what language you speak. If you engage in criminal activity or terrorism you must be punished…

      1. Our Sri Lankans need to learn to report crimes to the police and relevant authorities while collecting any evidence possible and video the incident instead of resorting to assault and vandalism…

2.”twp shops in Moragahamulla were set on fire by angry mobs. ” Immediately arrest all those involved in the burning of these shops.

      3. Law and Order Minister inform the public not to try and take the law into their own hands instead report crimes to the Authorities.

      4. Also inform the public that anyone involved in assaulting anyone or vandalizing and public or private property will be arrested and charged for their crimes.

Well said…it is the civic responsibility that is missing in all communities. We should all join hands under “One Nation Movement” and campaign “not in our names” to those who continue to thrive on divisional politics. The elected can not run the show alone and the moral support need to come from the masses until we get over this mentality. We need to have bootcamps for those with no other skills for nation building continue to fuel this hate of fellow men?.

All our thoughts are with the family who has lost a loved one and also with those been affected by the ensuing events.

Sinhala Buddhist Terrorism at it again!

Where are all the so called Sinhala Buddhist Majority that is against this kind of behavior!?

Why are you not standing up against this deplorable behavior by these terrorists?

Are all Sinhalese in approval of this behavior?

If this is just a small group of Sinhala Buddhist Terrorists we want to see the majority Sinhala people stand up and speak up against this deplorable behavior.

Media let the voice of the majority that is against this deplorable behavior be heard to show that these racists are not what the people want.

      Maharajah Network where are you!?
Do a serious of interview giving voice to those againt this deplorable behavior and educated the public how to conduct themselves.

‘we want to see the majority Sinhala people stand up and speak up against this deplorable behavior.’

Why should they get involved? Were the majority of Tamil people protesting when their ‘sole representatives’ were slaughtering Sinhala villagers? Don’t blame the Sinhalese for this mayhem. Blame the Government for not carrying out it’s duty to protect its citizens and punish hate mongers.

“Why should they get involved? Were the majority of Tamil people protesting when their ‘sole representatives’ were slaughtering Sinhala villagers?”

How could they when the armed forces, president and wannabe president made deal with your sun god? How could the Tamils speak out when they were in limbo? How could the Tamils speak out not knowing when the state would suddenly become chums of the terrorist whenever it finds convenient.

I didn’t hear you speak out during the dark ages JVP terrorism. Tamils did speak out for the Sinhalese in 1971 as well as the years between 1987 and 1990. In fact when Sinhala Diaspora was reluctant to protest against both the terrorists and state terrorism I was told they the Tamils did protest.

I know for certain in 1971 a Tamil who was working in deep south saved nearly 150 Sinhalese youth who were taken to a remote area were about to be shot or executed. You don’t get these information on your media.

Dayan was saved by EPRLF Pathmanaba.

I know another Tamil or a handful of Tamils who managed to arrange safe passage for Somawansa and many JVP supporters to India. Find out from JVP key leaders and confirm it.

I know for sure a few army deserters left the country with the help of Tamils.

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know.

              Why did 1983 happen.

The people will be better served if no one is in moral dilemma or pushed to save others, irrespective of their race, religion, region, gender, affiliation to certain political stupidity, ……………………… It is for you to build a compassionate caring society where a 11 year old does not need to save a Tamil family or any other from racially motivated rioters lead by saffron clad thugs.

Isn’t it the Givernments job to safeguard their citizens? Why haven’t they rearrested that sob Gnanasara and his henchmen who are out on bail? It is much easier to blame the entire majority Sinhala Buddhist community than the real culprits.

If people riot, assault citizens, vandals public/private property it is a crime too. Then the police will have to arrest them and take legal action against them too. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands as simple as that.

      Gune,
Srilanka’s Buddhist fundamentalism and the key political parties using the Fundamentalist ideas to come to power never stop its bloodbath mentality. Since 1948 every government institutions were turned into a block of Buddhist Fundamentalists. Whenever they want they are prepared to create an environment that lead to bloodbath and destruction of properties of minority communities. How do you expect that 100% Sinhala Buddhist armed forces stop by Sinhalese? They did not stop in 1983. There was a change in tactics the military took over the work of Sinhalese thugs and criminals because after 1983 Tamils took arms and thugs and criminals too silent in front of arm. They tactfully created differences between minority communities by giving ministerial posts to Muslim leaders and Indian origin Tamils. Once they finished with Tamils they turned their face towards Muslims. This does not mean every Sinhalese are thugs and criminals but they are silent observers and they can’t do anything to stop. It is a learning for Tamils and Muslims. Will they realise the real threat and unite together by resigning from their ministerial posts and get the international support to stop this brutal genocide from this island?

Paathi, while you were in comma in 20s there was something taking place in Lankawe. Anyway when did you wake up? Were you awake at last month? There a LG election took place. A guy’s whose name in household name in Lankawe won the election.

Paathi, when you were fast asleep India, America and Muslims were struggling to make a guy’s name as household name in Lankawe. First Manmohan Singh woke up and said that if he tells them Lankawe was not listing. Then Ambassador Blake said in Congress “Gentlemen we are cheated”. Muslim got a taste in Aluthgama of how effective can be a household name. Now Muslims crying “we left our homes to support the Appe Aanduwa, now they are burning our properties and hurting us. At least Tamils did not touch anyone of us till we started to burn their villages in support of Appe Aanduwa.”
“Kan Kedda pin Sooriya Namaskaram”. But the eye sight is not going to come back. This time Muslims can try to open their eyes, but they cannot see anymore. This not a comma; nor even a nightmare; the reality of the bad judgement. No Return path had been selected. “Arasanai Nambi Purusanai Kaividdachchau”. it is unfortunate to see this. This type of violence is not good at all for Sri Lanka. The good name of Sri Lanka will be further damaged with this. Economy will further suffer and tourism and business will be affected if this continues. This violence and burning continue while Police is looking at the mobs doing nothing . Police should take responsibility for this..
secondly, There is not excuse for this. the murderers must be punished, all for killers are behind the bar now. why not punish them but incite violence against all innocent people who have no connection for this murder ..
What crazy people are these? to spread violence and to destroy the country, it shows some sinhalese people are racists and like to spread violence.

        Shenal:

Don’t be a dumb. Both parties have taken the law into their hands. What was confrontation between the deceased person and the Muslims is being investigated. Apparently, the altercation had left caused the life of man. Did the Muslim guys take the law into their own hands? That’s exactly what the police are investigating. Burning and looting by the Sinhalese cannot be the answer. If everyone is running riot, that means the country is a lawless land. Isn’t it silly of you to bring in the “liberal” angle into this – as if the Sinhalese people are the most liberal on earth?

        • 2
          2

          Jansee,

It is evidently clear that Muslims have taken law into their own hands when dealing with their daily matters. They ride bicycles without helmets, they burn down vehicles when they got into accidents, they have even damaged a train when a stupid Muslim woman jump in front of it. Furthermore, they build shops on the roads where there are large number of Muslim population, they cry in loudspeakers with disregard to the other people, they raze ancient vihars down to erase the ancient heritage and so on. Police don’t do anything to these things nor any other governmental authority.

There it is natural for the people to take law into their own hands. There is a limit to everything. I put the entire blame upon the police and the current government. This may present them with golden opportunity to further their cause and distable the country further. Gnansara was a foreign agent. It is sad that majority Buddhists do not see the danger of following Gnansara.

I don’t say that Sinhalese are abiding by the law to the maximum extent. But what I emphasize is that how low Sinhalese are to follow the civil law, Muslims are even lower to do the same and the biggest issue is that Police turns a blind eye for Muslims. That must be corrected. People are mostly angry for that. They don’t trust the police to do their duty correctly anymore.

Why are you so dumb? How can you be so sure that only Muslims are causing this and the law isn’t doing anything. It’s like you’ve analyzed the statistics to the slightest detail. I don’t even have the words to describe your stupidity. Most of the murders everyday in Sri Lanka are from Sinhalese people but do we blame your entire race for that or do we call innocent Buddhist murderers and what not? No we don’t because we aren’t idiots to make such stupid statements. Every race has imbeciles and extremists who promote violence and racism and they should be treated with justice regardless of race.

A crime/an incident in that members of 2 racial identities are involved should not be interpreted as racial conflict.
Sad to mention that to my understanding CT was first to give a near racial picture of it.

  • 32
    10

This is the result of the racial statements made by Mahinda Rajapakse, Joint Opposition and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna during the local government election campaign. Only way JO/SLPP/Mahinda can win elections is by inciting nationalistic ideals. Its sad that the President does not want to appoint Sarath Fonseka as the Minister of Law and Order. Fonseka is the only one who can control this situation and the President who met Mahinda in the night like illegal lovers is listening to his own SLFP rogues and Mahinda and protecting the rogues. As per the constitution the President has to appoint Ministers as recommended by the Prime Minister, by not appointing President may be violating the constitution and he can be impeached. President is today become the main cause for all racial riots which are increasing on a daily basis.

      Buddhist

Could you please reproduce the so called racial statements made by MR, JO & SLPP during LG election campaign.

It’s important because they can be charged for arousing racism & social conflicts.

As you know them well, why don’t you take steps to prosecute them? There’s provision in our law.

Is it ethical to appoint a man refused by large majority in an election as an MP?

Dear fake Buddhist, if SF is so sacred for you keep him @ your home & worship.

In Srilanka 99.999999999999999999999999999999 Budhists HATE all sin kele racists and kasippu rowdies so that any racial violence will not spread to other parts of lanka..

I understand that those who attacked the Sinhalese man, who was succumbed to injuries later, all Muslims, were arrested and under custody. I don’t see any reason for Sinhalese to attack other Muslims in town who are not party to the incident as it might go out of control.
Our country has bigger issues and we are very much on the international spotlight right now. Therefore, any irrational move will reflect bad on the entire Sinhalese nation, which is not fair.
I urge with respect to Venerable Galabodaaththe Gnanasara Thero (as Thero’s name appeared here) to show restraint and control and clam down Sinhalese who are angry over the incident and not to let it escalate to a situation which will tarnish country’s image unnecessarily.

      2

Well said. It started like a traffic offense, and these criminals were arrested and will now face our laws, like any democratic nation. Why are these mindless thugs being sent to attack innocent people who had nothing to do with it? Who is behind these organized gangs of terror? These BBS goons are following the orders of anti Muslim elements. These mobs seem easily led, and will foolishly follow anyone with a saffron robe. The BBS always arrives on cue, to instigate and provoke the mobs. They are causing chaos and adding to the violence.

      Champa: Just shut up.

    • 4
      1

Champa it is hearting to note a very sane intelligent response from you. It is sad that whenever there is an issue it turns into a racial and religious program. The Muslims who were involved were arrested. If the mobs had targeted the busines’s of those who were involved which is wrong but is undesanable. But why target other Muslims businesses or places of worship. They didn’t have any thing to do in this matter.

We as a nation should not forget that there were only 13 or so LTTE’s when they targeted the military convoy which killed the 13 soilders. But Sinhalese mobs went on a rampage against Tamils in the entire country who were no part in what happened. The rest is history.

The hate has been fermented by several groups with lies and deceit which the gullible Sinhala youth have fallen prey to.

Its my opinion that these groups believe that they taught a lesson to the Tamils and now they want to teach a lesson to the Muslims.

Hope saner minds will prevail because what is happening is similar to what happened to the Tamils before 1983. I believe there are groups who want another 1983 this time against the Muslims.

I checked a news website and the comments were about killing all Muslims burn down their businesses, homes, places of worship and these comments were racist, hatefilled and derogatory.

Pathetic, All the Sri Lankans still living in stone age!
Anyone hurting any innocent civilians and damaging property belong to anybody must be dealt with full force of law.
This is why I always say to ass holes here, In a country where there is no rule of law will not be transformed into a nation who respect democracy overnight by bringing in dumb devolution and constitutions!

    One party break temples
    Other part burn shops

Ass holes in SL ( Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim all )must be first sent to KGA and teach them how to obey respect and accept law! Make them civilized!

Without further dividing this country, Start from there, Rule of law.
Send the Gandassara and all the troublem akers to prison!
Country does not need another Black July. Greens are in power, then and now!

Where is the yahapalane when people take the law into their own hand?

We have to feel sorry for the poor victim first and foremost. It is such an unfortunate incident, and those responsible for beating him to death, are behind bars where they belong. Now let our judicial system deal with them. We are not a land of lawlessness.

There is no reason for any more violence and those behind these mindless mobs, who attack innocent people and their properties, should also be dealt with severely. The BBS has no reason to interfere, and instigate. They are sent their on a mission of hate, by evil elements, and they are adding more fuel to the fire. This will only end in a bad way, and the country will suffer again.

It is hard to understand why the previous regime and the present one keeps indulging this thugs in saffron robes and his ilk. He has caused enough of violence, which has led to deaths of innocent Sri Lankans.

What kind of animals are these fellows to assault an innocent ,poor man until he died for such a small accident.

But it’s sad that the people reacted in attacking the innocent ,instead of attacking the criminals .

The criminal”s have to be punished with death sentence and nothing less .I want to see Muslims come out and condemn the assault and pay their respects in thousands,at least you can start by doing so in the social media and offer and financial support to his family .just forget the reaction of attracts , weather they were drunk or not they were Muslims and effects the community.

The price a whole community has to pay for a bunch of Thugs among the community.

We Muslim condem these thugs who were involved. Some say they were drunk. So calling them Muslims is a disgrace to Muslims themselves. Every Muslim I talked to was angry with these thugs. And they felt sorry for the youth who died after getting to know the background story of this youth. I personally am a firm believer in capital punishment for murderers and drug dealers.

I perfectly understood what you said. But, you didn’t understand what I said. What I say is that capital punishment won’t solve anything except we get rid of one bad apple from the society. We need to teach people who to prevent crimes rather than punish the people after they have committed it.

I didn’t blame Muslims for drug trade. Even Buddhists engage in the Drug trade around Thailand and Mynmar.

All this violance should not be accepted….but muslim brothers do not let people to travel on roads in some areas in the country freely. They even walk at mid of the road not allowing others to drive on track. The way of this reporting seems to blame one race and white wash the others. See why canadian mayor in quebec express his country policy for those. Think wise. Not only one edge…but the other edge should be control to have a country in peace.

Lakantha. I think you are wrong when you say that Muslim brothers do not let people to travel on roads freely. Sri Lankans have this problem. I have come across groups walking on the road blocking the road talking freely and won’t even move when we toot the horn. Then there are others who walk in a row completly blocking the pavement so others can’t pass them. The newst trend is crossing the road leisurely at zebra crossings while talking on the phone.

That’s why we shout buruwa or haraka to these people. Our people need to learn manners and curtsey.

Shops are on the fringe of the road. There are no pavements in these towns. What would you think happen if there was an accident happened in one of these towns by a Sinhala driver? I rest my case there.

You bastards are white washing you own religious nuts and blame everything on Sinhalese. YOU PEOPLE ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS LOT. At least we can see the Islamic extremists clearly. It is high time that someone should teach you morons some good lesson. This is our country. If you don’t like the way we handle things you can go to Saudi Arabia and live their among your kin.

These lies have been believed where there is trouble between ethnic groups and religions. Stop the violence, obey the rule of law and end corruption or face year’s of terrorism where many will die for nothing.

This embarrassing for us majority of Buddhists who follow a most peaceful and truthful religion yet fail to understand it. Lord Buddha has said to respect all religions because then alone can you truly respect your own religion. Lord Buddha respected all religions and what kind of followers are we if we commit such heinous crimes. The BBS is a shame to all Buddhists in the world.
Please, Buddhism is regarded with respect in this world so don’t tarnish the name Buddhism carried for 2560 years.
And Islam is a religion based on mutual respect and love for the God. In no place of The Holy Quran does it say about violence towards other religions. Prophet Muhammad is an example of goodness to the world. And I believe that both Islamic and Buddhist citizens of Sri Lanka should not forget their religion the next time they mob.

idk why there is so much of discrimination in this country.why can’t we look at each other as Sri Lankans ?Why can’t we get justice for every crime without being racial?..The division we are having will not benefit any of us.No religion encourages violence and murderers.Every religion speaks of peace and harmony..First of all we should teach religion to everyone.secondly take an action against extremists and thirdly fight for justice without dividing our selves based on religion. politicians must be enjoying and benefiting from this .While innocent people suffer from all religions.people its time to use your heads…

It is not a matter of one’s likes and dislikes but the issue of picking the right man for the right job!
