The arrival of Buddhist monk Galagoda Atte Gnanasara of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) and Dan Priyasath who calls himself ‘Savior of the Sinhalese’ to pay last respects to a Sinhala man who succumbed to injuries sustained when beaten up by a group of Muslims has raised fears of imminent communal clashes in Teldeniya and other places in the Kandy District.
Sudarshana Gunawardena, Director General, Department of Government Information, told Colombo Telegraph that a curfew was imposed in the Kandy District and the Police put on alert to ensure that the enforcement of the law proceeds without hindrance and the situation does not spiral into an inter-communal conflagration.
“The Government appeals to all parties and especially the general public to act with responsibility and remain calm. The suspects have been arrested and the law will take its course,” Gunawardena said.
It is reported that a Hartal was declared in Digana, Teldeniya, Udispattuwa and Medamahanuwara protesting the attack. The Police and STF were deployed to bring the situation under control after twp shops in Moragahamulla were set on fire by angry mobs. Twenty-four people suspected of involvement in these acts of violence have been arrested by the Teldeniya police so far.
The victim, M.G. Kumarasinghe (41), a resident of Ambala in Medamahanuwara, had been undergoing treatment for a week at the Kandy Teaching Hospital after the assault and succumbed to his injuries last night.
The altercation had taken place allegedly when a group of men, later identified as Muslims, had been angered due to the victim not allowing them to overtake his vehicle. Another version has the victim accidentally hitting the side mirror of the vehicle in which the assailants were travelling but had not stopped to sort the matter out.
There is no evidence whatsoever that the assault was racially motivated. The assailants, all residents of Ambagahalanda, Digana were arrested by the police while a three-wheeler was also taken into custody.
Gnanasar and Priyasath, both representing extremist groups, are currently on bail over cases where they are accused of inciting communal violence against the Muslim community. Gnanasara Thero and the BBS, in particular, played a leading and violent role in the Aluthgama riots a few years ago.

Few Months ago we saw some funeral photos and video here and in other medias of a Sinhala family somewhere in Chilow, for my memory. Right after the election of 2015, anything happened in North was associated with LTTE. Aava Kuzhu and other violence were said as LTTE revival efforts. A Jacket wrapped in a Sinhala Newspaper was told by Slap Party leader G. L. Peiris as were purported to bring to Wellawatte and target important political figures. The reality is the poisonous atmosphere out there is every event, without missing, being used flare up communal hate to use for political purpose. Judge Ilancheliyan was appointed to investigate Vidya’s murder case with other two Judges. There were many topsy-turvy stories came out during this proceeding. At some point the Judge was targeted, (though not confirmed) and his Sinhala personal guard threw his life on that and saved the Judge. The murderer was a past LTTE operative. Judge Ilancheliyan had visited to the funeral. As it was about a Judge and his guard, the politicians or ministers or religious big head were not there. The funeral was eventually cited as an example of communities caring communities.

The families’ dismay on the loss was similar in both video. No language was needed to sense it. But the unrelated visitors had been shown prominently in this video added disappointment & pain to pain. A group of priests has gone to the funeral with only one motive of using it to bring out their political point. Nobody can tell a priest not to visit a grieving family. Their first needed place is that kind of situation. The family cannot be advised not to let them in. That is not the advice that can console them at this time. This is dilemma difficult to deal with. Probably very serious one, because this particular dilemma type has been pushing Lankawe from the mountain to bottom from the time of Lankawe received it freedom.

Rest are extremist who try to “protect” the religion. When did protecting a religion became more important than lives of others? Where in Buddhism did people learn its alright to harm others to achieve our goals.
War between religion happens because of extremist from both religions.
Just because few people are extremist but they do not represent the entire population.
Our only choice is when possible stand-up against these extremist and when not possible, at least not stand along with them.Unless we play our part right, we may have to watch another blood bath which we could have easily prevented.

The murderers of the Sinhalese man should get death sentence. Assaulting an innocent man to death over an incident on the highway is unacceptable. It is cruel. Anyway, that doesn’t mean that Sinhalese have a right to attack other innocent Muslims who have nothing to do with murderers.
We already have two black marks 1. 1983 2. Aluthgama. Although ordinary Sinhalese have nothing to do with both the incidents which had been carried out by interested parties involving politicians, the blemish it has created on Sinhalese as a nation will be there forever. That is why we should be careful not to encourage a repetition.
The assault on the Sinhalese man on the road was not based on ethnicity. Anyways, if it was a reversal, then the entire international community along with the Diplomatic Corps, all international media and rights groups will give it to a racial and religious twist and denounce Sinhalese as murderers. The world will treat us differently and unfairly if the assaulter was a Sinhalese. That is why we should show our maturity and restraint.

This is a serious situation here being handled very badly by the govt. One problem is that the Govt has lost its legitimacy and is irrelevant to the people of the area.The govt has lost all respect and regard from the Sinhalese people. Consequently no Minister dare show up in the area and call for reason and peace. If Sirisena/RW go there they will be hooted out. There should be an immediate plan to mobilise local religious leaders from all religions, community leaders, and have on going discussions to ensure peace and reduce tension.People will listen to Mahinda who I am sure will be ready to assist. I know some rabid political extremists will ridicule the suggestion. That is exactly the problem here.

We are not a horoscope readers or fortune tellers. But what we see is, Muslim environment is not that much regardful to Muslims leaders. Unlike in the past, this time, UNP Prime Minister and SLFP President have unitedly shown concern of the violence. Whatever could be the interpretation for that new behavior, but it can control the violence faster than in the past. But Muslim community going to ask for explanation from the leadership for what happened in the last three years.
We have written many comments of Muslim leaders’ selfishness and the 2015 January election when Muslims deviated from Muslim leaders, who were in the SLFP and voted to Common Candidate.
This is completely different from Tamils’ history. From the time the Ahimsa agitation started, Tamils voted only for one party. Then, once the armed struggle started, Tamils called LTTE as boys (Podiyal- translation is “boys”, but the denotations is “our children”). Once the diplomatic agitation started, they remained with TNA, though they could not agree with TNA’s mentality of accepting whatever Sinhala Government would give them. Traitors were there in Tamils. But Tamils behaviors were influenced by an angel like SJV, Netaji like Pirapaharan & diplomatic Sampanthar Aiya. Because of their reliability, people excused their mistakes and kept going back to them. But Muslim leadership failed to recognize that they are minority & they need to walk on the edge of the sword in behavior. The united Muslim mass has been supporting the leaders until now without faith. But in last election, there was number violence within the Muslim community; even boycotted & refused access to leaders.
Muslim leadership, (may be still getting the votes but) losing the followership of the mass -especially youngsters. In other words, it has lost the touch of feeling of the Muslims, but still knowing well all their feelings. That is a big mistake in politics, where leaderships, if know, always respond to their supporters’ calls. That is the political protection for the mass and the leaders.

Now that SLPP has won the Nationalists are picking up their weapons. This is a strategy by the trio to keep the fire burning so that the Southern Sinhalese will vote for them in all future elections. Unfortunately President Sirisena is meeting Mahinda in the dark and adding fuel to it. Why won’t the President appoint Sarath Fonseka as the Minister of Law and Order. He has proven his ability as the Commander of the Army winning against LTTE.

Dear Muslim Brothers and Sisters, The one who killed in Teldeniya, ambala is the only breadwinner who is a hard worker works more than 15 hours a day with a lot of responsibilities to look after his parents, Sister and wife, mother is paralyzed and Father is disabled, Sister is Down syndrome, wife is little upset about lost baby. He is the only person who is looking after them.
Good people from our society in digana have collected around 300,000/- and already given the family and promised to give them One Million and to buy a three wheeler for their needs, whatever we do just think can we give them the caring son, brother and a husband for the entire family???

I live in kandy and the residencies of digana and balagolla were told to close down their shops and stay at home by the police the night before the attack because they knew it was gonna happen. The police didn’t do anything but let the mob freely parade around the town burning down houses and shops. Once the riot police came there was nothing left to protect or save everything was destroyed and burnt down. People were literally stopping busses and checking for Muslims on it just to attack them. Most of the houses were burnt down and Muslims were hiding in their neighboring Sinhalese houses. Among them were two of my friends whose house was entirely destroyed and burnt down and they had flee the area. The news doesn’t cover everything just because they don’t want to ruffle any feathers. Even with the police curfew some of the shops and a mosque in katugasthota was attacked by a few people last night. Condemning an entire race for the actions of a few has plagued every persons mindset in the world right now. Spread love and peace.
