I Took Oaths A Little While Ago

By C.V.Wigneswaran

C.V. Wigneswaran

I took oaths a little while ago this morning undertaking to faithfully perform the functions of my office.

My office is a gift from my people. They have mandated me to perform my duties on a long term as well as a short term perspective. The former behoves us to confirm our individuality. To do so we have to learn lessons from our struggles of the past, our previous political perspectives and our past experiences and then forge ahead. It is the need of the hour that we remove the misunderstandings and doubts that have crept into the minds of various communities.

It is as a part of such an exercise that we decided that I take oaths before the President of this Country. We believe our decision would convey to our brethren our desire to settle our differences within a united Sri Lanka.

Our action today buttresses our close–up perspectives too, in that we expect to bring immediate relief to our war affected people. I hope the Sinhala people would endeavour to prod on their political representatives in every manner whatsoever to bring sunshine into the lives of our disturbed and affected Tamil speaking people.

I expect my Sinhala brothers and sisters to impress upon their political representatives that internal self determination does not divide the country but facilitate a journey on the path of unity. I sincerely ask the Sinhala people to realize that to the same extent the Sinhala people cherish and respect their language and culture so do the Tamil speaking people cherish and respect their own language and their traditions. There is no place for violence in this realization. None could force such realization. It is such sincere realization that would take us all on the path of peace and brotherhood. Therefore let my simple symbolic act today pave the way for the unity of the people of the two communities in our Island. May Divine blessings be with all of us!

Justice C.V.Wigneswaran

Chief Minister, Northern Provincial Council

Congratulations – your direct appeal to our Sinhalese brothers and sisters is a breath of fresh air to come from a Tamil Leader. Undoubtedly this is the way forward.

Congratulations for taking the oath in front of the democratically elected President of this this country. You have done the right thing by respecting the the majority of people who elected the President of this country. You are connecting to people in a way I have not seen before by Tamil leaders. I think it is a correct approach and an honest approach to solve the problems in our country collectively and in a spirit of co-operation. You have a mind of your own, which deserves support.

The second response above from John is worth taking note of. Unity in diversity does not require boundaries, separation and insularity. Like bio-diversity, cultural diversity must be allowed to flourish – both requiring sensitive governing/management. The same applies for unity, the development and preservation of which must not be harmed by political insensitivity.

Only in a united country cultural diversity can be enjoyed i.e every part of this Island is for everyone to enjoy and experience.

I congratulate Wigneswaran on his positive maiden speech since being sworn in as the First Chief Minister of the Northern Province.

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) supporters in Mullaiththeevu on Tuesday have burnt the effigy of NPC Chief Minister Mr CV Wigneswaran who took his oath before genocidal Colombo’s President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday.

Well done. You are Tamils with dignity. Other Tamils are just Tame-Ills.

First of all I congratulate Mr.Wigneswaran for winning the hearts and trust of the Nothern Tamil and minority communities.

Now it is time for him to deliver his service to them.

First there are over 90,000 war widows with children whose grievances such as shelter, health, food and employment are not yet been met and Mr. Wigneswaran should address this as a priority.

Second Mr.Wigneswaran should appoint a board of well qualified academics comprised of professors, economists, architects, engineers, doctors, businessmen, industrialists, investors, agriculture experts, hi-Tech engineers, research Analysts and innovators, music art and culture academics etc, and draw up plans for both short and long term development. He could also ask for volunteer help from Academics of Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora community and from International expert community including UN, EU, CW, SARC and Asian countries who are well aware of infrastructure and economic, social, employment and market based development programs to market North.

Third Mr.Wigneswaran should submit an Yearly Budget proposal to the Central Government based on Short and long term development plans and to obtain necessary funds from Sri lanka Government.

Fourth Mr.Wigneswaran should also submit various Industrial, Agriculture and development related proposals to International community for Investment generation purposes and for Funding purposes. He could also make use of Tamil Diaspora community for their Knowledge, experience, grants, funding and Investments to Market North.

Opening and operating Nothern Development Website is a must with their own various Broadcast channels, printed material, Radio/ TV / internet communication channels etc, to open to the outside world for funding, grands and investments and business purposes.

I hope there are many countries who will come to support Nothern Development programs if proper channels and methods are used and proper information (both printed and internet) is available. Please use proper professional and consulting advisers to get the maximum benefit.

Availability of the Nothern Harbor and Airport is a Plus for easy market access. Proper planning and development will bring quick results.

I Wish Mr. Wigneswaran and North all the best.

The tamils in the country had been subjugated under the authority of the southern government ever since the end of war. The tamil people s freedom and dignity was traded for pseudo development. However the victory of the TNA and the advent of Wigneswaran send the message loud and clear that the tamils would no longer be subject to the whims and fancies of the south; and that they as a community value their dignity and freedom. The Tamil Diaspora on the other hand were also taking the tamil people for a ride; their propaganda and activism is far above the actual concerns of the people. What wigneswaran has done here is that he sends a message to the diaspora too; that the Tamil people want peace harmony and nothing more. His swearing before the president is by no means a sign of defeat; but a valiant step forward for reconciliation to heal the wounds in the past. Our sincere hope is that a future with true harmony amongst communities will dawn to this country free from the manipulation and authoritarianism of governments and diaspora.

Hon. Chief Minister NPC. I am delighted at your statement, it is a sigh of relief for all people who really long for peace and those with genuine love for the people of our country. You have set an example to all politicians what humility is. That is what good breeding and education is all about. In your new position as CM you have an enviable
and an onerous duty before you. We are sure justice, truth, and rule of law will be foremost in your governance and all forms of corruption in Govt. business will be nipped in the bud and bringing such people to book. We pray that you will have wisdom and courage to inculcate these values to the country as one nation.
