Practical Solutions To Curb The Rate Of Rape

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter” – Martin Luther King

Having met with a barrage of flak for my article”Are Women To Be Blamed For Rape?” from a section of the online readers, as much as I take it all on a positive stride for the awareness created, I believe the burning issue of rape is yet to be taken seriously… let alone be addressed.

Unfortunately, more than the plight of victims itself, the absence of a practical solution coupled with the lack of will makes the situation look even more poignant. To make matters worse, the moment sensible suggestions are put forward, the supposedly ‘learned’ ones tend to blow a fuse when they realize of a possible requirement to make ‘lifestyle’ adjustments for the greater good of the not-so-fortunate living amongst us.

Clarifying any misconceptions one might have based on my last article, AT NO STAGE have I justified rape, blamed the rape victim or made an indication of being an apologist for the perpetrator. Readers need to understand the difference between blaming a victim and blaming probable and/or negative external influences behind such crimes. Readers also need to understand the fact that this is not about a struggle between them women and us males. Belonging to a right-thinking humane society, we as a nation should be united against a common enemy… an unknown enemy at that who does not even have an established profile.

It is also unfortunate that to date, there exist not an effective judicial system nor a pilot plan to contain the menace. Having read comments on my Facebook page by ill-informed feminist voices about the need to teach boys not to rape, about the need to teach sex-education at schools and for insisting on being oblivious to possible indecent behavior of the very same creature that rapists gets attracted to, I was quite surprised by their limited knowledge of ground realities. Also of their failure to understand the minority status of the abnormal minds living amongst us men.

Interestingly, as per this site, the highest case of rape seems to occur mostly in highly developed countries with equally high literate populations. So in essence, the age-old myth of focusing on uneducated characters when identifying rapists seems to be far-fetched.

Woman dancing in a clubFurthermore, with prostitution being legal in most of the countries in the list above, discount one must to a certain extent the possibility of sexual frustration being a factor. Paradoxically, forced sex can take place when there is a need for sexual gratifications as well. In this context, though I cannot be certain of rapists experiencing a feeling of pleasure while at it, it is possible for the act to be some sort of a fulfilment of a sick craving, if not purely a physical one… or even a combination of both.

While I reiterate the fact that rapists have NO EXCUSES WHATSOEVER for their actions, however bitter it may be, for the sake of containing this menace, it becomes important for us to acknowledge truths that are clear and cut. When discussing my previous article on social media, it was indeed amusing when hell broke loose the moment I touched the subject of suggestive and sexually arousing dress codes of women. I could have lived with that. But what irked me most was when the focus of discussion was shifted in a flash from the plight of rape victims to in defense of the need to wear tiny bits and pieces of clothing (obviously to attract the opposite sex) by the Senoritas of Colombo. Saddened I was indeed.

As much as wisdom dictates that there cannot be a correlation between the act of rape and dress codes of women in general, I am forced to think otherwise considering the lowest number of rape cases in countries where strict laws are enforced as against rape figures in countries having extremely liberal policies. While the security of women may come at the expense of reduced freedom of movement should there be a higher emphasis on modesty (in behavior & in dress codes), I believe further research needs to be made in favor of striking a balance for the greater good.

They say it takes two to tango and having lived in the USA where women get drunk and end up with strangers for ‘one night stands’, occurrences are so regular that even though it can be considered technically as rape, seldom complaints are lodged. Based on my analysis, while promiscuous women rarely find themselves in positions of distress soon after being sexually victimized, I find a stark contrast when victims belong to conservative societies. Interestingly, both types are contributory factors for unreported cases to outnumber reported ones. Hence, the need to discuss the subject of rape more openly and to set up a conducive backdrop for victims to come forward with their cases. Silence on the part of the victim may encourage the rapist to repeat his crimes and probably take an innocent life while at it.

Yes, it is true that some of the Arabs rape our maids. But what about maids working within our own shores? Do they escape the radar since the employers are not exclusively Muslim? Instead of blaming the Arabs on whom we have no jurisdictions, let us plead with our Sinhalese/Buddhist leadership to put a stop to the ‘flesh trade’ that we rely so much on.

Women are NEVER equal to men. Both are unique and have different strengths and weaknesses. Had women been equals, I believe the need for women to be protected by men does not arise. Women are weak in physical strength, they are creations of beauty, they bring so much joy to this world and they can be extremely intelligent. But with all due respect to their personal freedom and their politically correct notions, if women do not wish to make compromises when dealing with an unknown enemy, apart from the delayed justice of the law enforcement types, I guess we can only pray for God’s direct intervention when in search of justice. Feminist activist and critics may insist for a change of attitude on the part of men, but what they fail to understand is that while women in general are vulnerable, it is impossible to identify possible perpetrators who are extremely small in numbers. Besides, education and capital punishments are never assurances for a sick mind not to strike. Hence, the need to avoid possible situations among others. I hope the following factors may draw the attention of the concerned officials;

  1. Separate seating arrangements in buses and trains. The left or right aisle being reserved exclusively for women.
  2. Total ban of pornography, including proxy sites. (Now I understand why there were so many male critics for my previous article).
  3. Introduction of the death penalty for murderers and life sentences for rapists.
  4. Establishment of DNA labs in each district and the compilation of a data base (with photos, DNA samples, thumb-prints) of convicted and suspected criminals. Usually there is a tendency for criminals to repeat their crimes.
  5. Punishment for individuals for actions of but not limited to ‘cat calling’, teasing, groping and improper touching etc. Public flogging is my personal choice (as in Singapore).
  6. Segregation of sexes in schools where it is possible. Failing which, to make arrangements to seat students separately.
  7. Outright bans on ragging at universities. Once again public flogging based on information received from informants.
  8. Encouragement for locals to wear knee length swimming attire when in public places of bathing and modest dress codes when around men who are not related by blood.
  9. Reduction of the number of outlets selling liquor nationwide.
  10. The raising of the minimum age of drinking to 21. (I consider older as maturity)
  11. Encouragement of parents or male family members to accompany as much their female siblings/offspring when there is a need for them to travel on lonely stretches… especially after the sun sets in.
  12. Encouragement of school going girls in remote parts of the country to travel in groups (especially in the North).
  13. Establishment of a system where a male who moves into a village or to locality for the purpose of residence or work to be registered with the local police.
  14. Setting up of a system where construction workers, plumbers, electricians etc. should be allowed inside houses only if they are registered with a respective regulatory body (as in developed countries). If there is no mechanism in existence at present, it may be about time the authorities looked in to the matter of entering details of manual laborers in to a streamlined system.
  15. Establishment of a system where important details of every citizen (including criminal history) can be obtained by the police in seconds by entering the identity card number on a portable machine (as in Malaysia)
  16. Closure of brothels, Karaoke pubs with female hostesses and massage parlors that doubles as brothels. Let men appreciate and live by making adjustments with the women in their lives (of course there exist a last resort, but let it be the very last resort). Closure of places of ill fame may also prevent men from considering women as objects.
  17. Establishment of counselling centers with staff making regular house visits.
  18. Enforcement of laws criminalizing the employment of household help below the age of 16 and laws concerning the need to register details of maids.
  19. Regular house visits by employees from the Department of social services and the need to empower them to make enquiries individually on all female residents.
  20. Enactment of laws making it compulsory to have counsellors in all schools attended by girls

The list goes on, but in a country where at least eight girls/women are raped on a daily basis as per official reports, instead of the ‘high society’ and the ‘half-learned’ of Colombo playing Russian Roulette just by criticizing messengers on social media, I hope they put their resources together and start analyzing practical and preventive measures while lobbying for stricter punishments at the same time.

If people are not looking for solutions to rape and happy with the status quo, why take the trouble to change it.

    Attn Muslim readers:-

Islamic Shariah is a system of governance practicing Muslims impose on themselves and reap it’s benefits. We are free to live as we like, as long as we do not impose each others ideology. Islam will grow without the help of anyone because, humanity’s search for peace and prosperity ends with embracing Islam. That’s why it has grown to be the quarter of the world’s population within a short span of fourteen hundred years.

The Islamic Shariah is the prescription for social justice, economic prosperity and a life of contentment. It touches the very foundation of Humanity’s ‘fitrah’ (The Natural / innate Disposition)

Then if there comes to you guidance from Me, then whoever follows My Guidance shall neither go astray, nor fall into distress and misery (The Noble Quran 20:123)

And pay attention to His statement here: ‘then whoever follows My guidance’; because that which is necessary as it relates to the Noble Quran is following it, not just the mere recitation and properly pronouncing its letters. For this reason He said: ‘then whoever follows My guidance’ and following the guidance of the Book of Allah is a branch of understanding the Noble Quran and pondering over it.

(This is) a Scripture that We have revealed unto thee, full of blessing, that they may ponder its revelations, and that men of understanding may reflect. (The Noble Quran 38:29)

      Maghribi,

I am not a Muslim, but read your response anyway. Man! What a load of pompous BS.

“We are free to live as we like, as long as we do not impose each other’s ideology”.

Huh! Where? We have seen that in practice around the globe. Forget about cradles of Islam such as Saudi Arabia or Iran. Even in Muslim dominated ghettos in Western cities. Where women cannot walk the streets without a Burka.

“The Islamic Sharia is the prescription for social justice, economic prosperity and a life of contentment”.

Oh. Baby! Yes! We see that all over middle eastern sharia jurisdictions. Take Saudi as an example. “Social justice” is rampant in fact. Saudi women do reap many benefits in terms of “life contentment”. Confined to compounds. Scrutinized by male “guardians”, who sometimes beat them senseless. Coz’ they love and protect their females.

      Cheers!

Even at Peradeniya and Jpura Unis women were forced to wear the Abaya by the Muslim Majlis. Muslim Majlis did not want my Muslim friends to go for socials and they were acting as the moral police. This was in the early 90s. I understand that these ‘rules’ are still prevalent.

      Do you research.
Islamic “shariah” is only very loosely based on the Quran and the hadith. FYI, even the earliest authentic hadith (Sahih Muslim) was written over 100 years after the prophets death, if I’m not mistaken.

So, you’re telling me Shariah is perfect? Shariah is only partly Islamic. The other half is cultural and meant only for the law of that land at that time. It does not and CAN NOT apply to current times.

As a muslim, you owe it to yourself to read the Shariah (law) and the jurisprudence and cross compare them with the Quran and see if it even makes sense, which it doesn’t.

Just follow the Quran the way it’s meant to be followed and you won’t be following a fallible law created, partly, by men who are, by nature, fallible.

Only God is absolute. Everything else is relative to God.

        Maghribi

What is Shariah, How dis it originate? Does a 7th Century Tradition apply to a 21st century environment? Remember, at that time, the Sun was going around the Earth, and now the Earth is rotating on its own axis, and goes around the Sun. No Need for epicycles, The Bible , or Joshua.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharia#Etymology_and_origins

The concept of crime, judicial process, justice and punishment embodied in sharia is different from that of secular law.[18] The differences between sharia and secular laws have led to an ongoing controversy as to whether sharia is compatible with secular forms of government, human rights, freedom of thought, and women’s rights.[19][20][21]

        Etymology and origins

Scholars describe the word sharia (/ʃɑːˈriːɑː/, also shari’a, šarīʿah) as an archaic Arabic word denoting “pathway to be followed” (analogous to the Hebrew term Halakhah [“The Way to Go”]),[22] or “path to the water hole”. The latter definition comes from the fact that the path to water is the whole way of life in an arid desert environment.[23]

The etymology of sharia as a “path” or “way” comes from the Quranic verse[Quran 45:18]: “Then we put thee on the (right) Way of religion so follow thou that (Way), and follow not the desires of those who know not.”[22] Malik Ghulam Farid in his Dictionary of the Holy Quran, believes the “Way” in 45:18 (quoted above) derives from shara’a (as prf. 3rd. p.m. sing.), meaning “He ordained”. Other forms also appear: shara’u[Quran 45:13] as (prf. 3rd. p.m. plu.), “they decreed (a law)”[Quran 42:21]; and shir’atun (n.) meaning “spiritual law”[Quran 5:48].[24]

The Arabic word sharīʿa has origins in the concept of ‘religious law’; the word is commonly used by Arabic-speaking peoples of the Middle East and designates a prophetic religion in its totality. Thus, sharīʿat Mūsā means religious law of Moses (Judaism), sharīʿat al-Masīḥ means religious law of Christianity, sharīʿat al-Madjūs means religious law of Zoroastrianism.[3] The Arabic expression شريعة الله (God’s Law) is a common translation for תורת אלוהים (‘God’s Law’ in Hebrew) and νόμος τοῦ θεοῦ (‘God’s Law’ in Greek in the New Testament [Rom. 7: 22]).[25] In contemporary Islamic literature, sharia refers to divine law of Islam as revealed by prophet Muhammad, as well as in his function as model and exemplar of the law.[3]

Is this the same shariah law that encourages domestic violence?(Surah 4.34 to quote wikepedia).
Is this the same stupid ideology that considers a woman’s testimony in court worth only half of that of a man?
Which god dictated this law that justifies honor killings of women?
Where is the social justice of this law when it always rules against women?
How can you uphold a law taht allows a rapist to escape punishment by marrying the victim? ( Shariah courts in Bharain, Jordan, Morocco, Libya, Tunisia and Syria….per wikipedia)
What bs law punishes the victim when she complains?

Too bad that these extremist blind worshippers were not born from an orifice in a man since they consider women such unworthy objects of equal and fair treatment.

Looks like a load of bull crap was just unloaded to waste the time of the intelligent readership here on CT.

What Muhammad Fzal says has some truth to it. All these unnecessarily sexual dress codes that designers put out to make money can corrupt the average mind. Even the US is finally realizing this (they knew it all along, but money was always the greater lure).

Heightened by unnecessary sexuality, men can indeed go on a rampage where another totally different person in another situation becomes unfortunately violated. In Sri Lanka for example, the Westernized urban culture might not sit too well with the rural mindset. It might create discord and disturbance to a more unaccustomed and inexperienced person.

But better than going into Middle Eastern Sharia laws and dress-codes, it is better to go with the time-honored laws and cultural dress of the particular country once resides in.

Again, you prove the importance of educating people to at least respect other women as they would their mother, sister and wife. So that their brain can control their raging desires, hatred and vengence to some extent with rational thinking.
Your time honored laws still imply the suppression, subterfuge and irrational treatment of women.
Again, were the gang rape victims of India and the beautiful young school girl Vithya dress scantily?
It is not the dress! It is the MIND SET of the ignorant, aberrant, controlling individuals without any refinement, who use sexual violence as a means of dominance.
Dont impose the rules on the women only. The opposite sex needs taming in this matter too. It is the boys will be boys attitude of most societies that is partially responsible for the present minds set. Please do not continue to feed in to it anymore.

        • 5
          4

          Su Siri,

So, are we to keep educating and controlling the male mindset, whilst cultural norms go wildly out of control with the selling of sexually explicit clothing? Now this is very similar and linked to the US gun industry which is now an absolute and uncontainable industry, which is inextricably and inexorably tied to the global monitory reserves, and for and its further creation and minting. And from sexually explicit clothing will contemporary culture emerge.

Quite unlike the Middle East, Sri Lanka’s time honored Buddhistic laws did not suppress and subjugate women. Also, the time-honored laws of the Middle-East was a necessity at the time, although it is outdated with the modern contrivance and general global progression – trouble is, their laws seem to be an absolute for all time.

Gang rapes in India are mostly because of the Indian obsession to abort their female children because of ignominy of their caste system. Men are without jobs and mates, and on top of that there is the Western culture quite out of synch with Indian culture and necessity, to educate and uplift their womenhood.

As for the dear and the beautiful young school girl Vithya, Indian deranged culture certainly seems to have come from across the border. On top of that Colombo culture is a whole light year away from the culture of the struggling masses. The correlation between the play-acting of the Western-cultural model for the more affluent, is very likely a trigger to the imbalance and disturbance in psyche for the struggling masses.

It must be remembered that women too, have fathers, sons, brothers, and husbands who we wish to care for.

          • 0
            1

Actually yes. Unless, you think teaching concepts like no means no, willing consent, no one has the right to force themselves onto other people’s bodies, that a woman’s body belongs to herself and no one else are worthless?

Cultural dress- please see the amount of rapes that take place in rural India where women wear traditional clothing…clearly it doesn’t stop rape.

Rape is about power and Dominance and Control. Plain and simple. The sooner we educate people, stop making justifications for rape, teach our sons to respect women, train our police force and judiciary to take rape cases seriously and encourage rape victims to come forward instead of making excuses and victim blaming the better.

The truth is all cultures, families, fathers, teach their children that rape is wrong. It the same as murder. They are universally accepted axioms of what is wrong. But they do happen. For various obvious, less obvious, and elusive set of reasons, rape and murder do happen.

Prevention while including education, moral awareness, and dire punishments, will yet go unheeded in different situational contexts. Lack of basic human needs, employment, and decent familial structure can all contribute.

In the midst of this wretchedness, a certain kind of evil will reemerge and reinvent itself. When in the same country; on the same soil, when fellow compatriots or citizens are brazenly living the most affluent and hedonistic of lifestyles out of context with the masses, rape and murder will happen. In contagion effect, it will throw-back on the most vulnerable. The affluent will live apart with all the protection they can afford, and the disadvantaged will turn on themselves.

Women in rural India wear cultural dress. But film and TV media exacerbate promiscuity in men. On top of that there is a dearth of women in India. Indian men without partners will then go mad. They will take it out on the women of their immediate surroundings.

I am appalled that you sound emapathetic and apolegetic for the perpetrators. Blaming another culture for violence does not help. The solutions need to come from the society itself. Educating young boys to respect females is a good start because sons, brothers will one day end up as fathers and husbands that we care about. Tougher enforced laws and judges not pardoning culprits does not hurt either.
By the way, rape has happened and will continue to happen even within your so called “cultural norm” that I assume you mean by a woman dress and freedom to live is dictated by a patriarchal society. Incidentally those rapes go unreported and do not contribute to the stats.

            • 4
              0

If you are appalled that I sound empathetic and apologetic towards the perpetrators, that is regrettably your defense in the absence of good argument. It borders ad hominem on your part.

If someone were to rape me or one of my loved ones, I would see it from a personal and narrower angle and would feel very angry and revengeful indeed. However, in this forum, I would prefer to keep my arguments on an unbiased and conceptual level. I am arguing on a broader platform, away from any personal bias. In this way, can we find truer solutions.

It is evident that solutions should come from society itself. That young boys have to be educated to respect females and so on, are stated time and time again. There is no parent from any culture- mother or father- that will tell a young boy to rape a female, either implicitly or explicitly. These are fundamental issues that all societies are built up upon. We as women and mothers will always teach, advice, and protect our brothers, sons, fathers, husbands, and boyfriends. We as women and mothers will also always teach, advice, and protect our sisters, daughters, and mothers. The need for tougher laws also, have been tried and tested throughout history. Merely repeating what you say does not do much in seeing the situation as wider issue.

The other culture that I blame is the modern Western one, which has been around the 1990’s. It is a culture quite different from the traditional and differing types of world cultures where each society (even the ones where women went about naked), had a cultural reason for doing so. It is different from the natural progression of these cultures.

The culture I mention is the one based on money, and the minting of money, where sex, drugs, pornography, and birth control sell in the midst of guns and environmental pollution, to keep control and balance on the world currency exchange.

It is a culture has been researched scientifically – the effects of sex and promiscuity, and their selling potential. It is a culture rather like the selling of opium in the 1800’s to the Chinese. At one point was a good money making enterprise; on another point it gradually reduced the China to the possibility of invasion.

Even the US is realizing this and trying to clean up her act and behave more responsibly, especially as a world power.

In the midst of this, it is better to come up with a neo and more progressive take on feminism and women’s rights, for your views belong to the time of the suffragettes.

In Sri Lanka, the women’s traditional dress was beautifully done without overt sexual tones. The men of course were free to roam free even with only an amude – displaying his wares. Men were not provoked; so they would not rampage. Essentially it was in the woman’s power to pick and (ch)use.

        Good system; dont you think?

‘Separate seating arrangements in buses and trains’

Considering this idea alone one can see that the author is nuts. Where are you going to seat homosexuals? With the ladies? Any pervert can claim to be gay and sit with them.

What about lesbians, transsexuals? What about men wearing a burqa? There is no law preventing a man from wearing one.

Stop trying to impose your medieval Islamic ideas or Gnanasara will break out and come after you.

“Where are you going to seat homosexuals? With the ladies?”

Homosexual prefer men, seat them with men and women are safe.

Lesbians prefer women, seat them with women and the women are safe.

“What about men wearing a burqa?”

Compel all men to wear chastity belt, it would protect women from men whether the men wear Burqua or women wear G string.

“Stop trying to impose your medieval Islamic ideas or Gnanasara will break out and come after you.”

What if Gnanasara the saffron clad thug went after women?

    To Fazil and all MEN.

Let me make things clear. Women have the right and freedom to do to you as they please. You are conceived within them. You float and then swim within the juices of their female hormonal oceans that soak into your very brain, body, mind and soul, locking you into a world of femininity from which very few of you will ever succeed in breaking free or even try to do so.

You emerge from within our bodies pushed out between our thighs. Yes all of you are born of women. Not one of you will ever be born of a man. Yet all of us women are born of women and know nothing of the anguish of being conceived in an alien environment that all you men must bear. You emerge from our bodies helpless and screaming and does any man dare come to your assistance? Will we every allow any man to nurse you and comfort you and help you find your way in this world?
The skills of survival we shall bestow upon your sisters but not upon you. You shall never be free but shall always seek out the assistance of a woman for your survival.

More than that we shall in your formative years entice you with the warmth of our flesh and bath you in the breath of our bodies which we will as you grow up hide away from you and reveal to you in but fleeting flashes so that you seek but never find. We shall master the arts of rhythmic contortion and mimic the hoarseness of passion in our whispers that will taunt your ears. We will carefully shave our bodies and paint our lips and cheeks and eyes. We shall sway our hips and shake our heads and pose before you with cascading hair and pouting lips and breasts that piercedly point at you. We shall when we decide to, enter your private spaces awakening your desire and making you pant with passion. And having distracted you we may do with you as we please BUT you may not so much as lay a finger upon us or even say a word that expresses your awakened lust. You must cast down your eyes with modesty and ensure that you do not give way to the lust we so skillfully awaken within you.

And what of our passion? We awaken to it as and when we wish and we spend it with whom we wish, when and where and as often as we wish and of this you know nothing, for you are busy with your life’s great task of earning the money you require to maintain us. Yes we may occasionally be raped but it is only when we find no pleasure in your attentions that we cry rape, remember?, And yes some of us are killed by your hidden hostilities but the risk of being killed rides on the shoulders of all beings and in fact much more heavily upon the shoulders of man than upon the shoulders of women Often times the solders will kill you but will only rape us. They give you pain while they give us pleasure thinking all the while that they harm us. Yes to be gang rapes is painful but such is the exception rather than the rule.

That is your fate you fools and you will all your lives be our slaves, working your lives away to make us comfortable feed us well and pay for our lifestyles and when we bear young you shall never know by whom and for whom we bear them. That my dear Fazil is the fate that you men are condemned to and we DARE you to change it if you can. Do not weep for us. We rule the world with the arts of our bodies and you dear men are our willing and obedient slaves.

I love the part where Fazi thinks the reason why he is facing such a backlash particularly from men is the fact that his proposal on banning porn. Not because we don’t want it to happen to our wife, our sister, our mother and our unborn daughters. It pretty much sums him up.

People, Do not get distracted. He is now trying to have a sharia discussion to escape the war he began with the woman folk of this country with his previous article. If you want to know the latest in this story go to the facebook page of Ashwini Aiyar and she has a public status. The Captain Sharia is also preaching there.

This morning I was really angry with the Colombo Telegraph for publishing this kind of rubbish with this previous article. However, now I realise why you keep doing it. It proves to the world, that we have an ignorant person who actually is not a real Muslim and who is just shooting in the dark to pretend to be a journalist, to escape the backlash he has created and ironically enough, who has not really realised what kind of empty words he is uttering. So I congratulate Colombo Telegraph for lowering its standards and allowing a certain Democracy. You have proved that you allow all forms of discussion and in this, the villain gets his piece. And we get boil our blood for a few hours and thank God, that only one person like this exist in Sri Lanka. And thank you all male folk, thanks to the Porno banning idea ;-) of this ignorant man, we have your support. hi hi hi hi hi!

Mr. fazi, you are many geniuses rolled in to one. Wow! You are is a psychologist, a sociologist, a criminologist and legal expert, the city planner, the preacher, all in one package!!!
Just listen to all his opinions that he dishes out as facts to support societal imprisonment of women. All problems of sexual violence solved! Everyone following the thinly masked shariah law goes to heaven and enjoys the 49 virgins.
Keep it up Fazi, CT gets a bigger audience as you masquerade as the town clown spewing your sexist drivel.

Are you next going to suggest that all young boys wear tight pant, protective cups and girls wear chastity belts to deter rapists? You do know that boys too are subject to rape I hope? I am all ears for your suggestions to that problem.
Has it ever crossed your mind , that in societies with strict (Sharia) laws the rape statistics may be low because the strict laws dictate punishment of the complainer, honor killings, and the simple reasons of fear, stigma and shame imposed on the victim. Hell, in liberal societies rapes go undocumented for the same reasons.

Were all those beautiful young gang rape victims in India wear miniskirts? Did the innocent Vithya in SL wear a bikini to school? Women dressed from head to toe get violated all the time. Looks like your theory has large holes in it.

Rosa Parks stood vehemently against racial seggregation in the USA. You will see millions of brave sri lankan Rosa Parks against your hair brained suggestions of gender seggregation.

Keep it up Fazi, CT gets a bigger audience as you masquerade as the town clown spewing utter drivel.

Dammit! Did you really want Fazl to ‘keep it up’?

He has got ‘it’ up too many times now, but ultimately it just flops.

He needs to be warned that a tight voula is not good for the libido.

      Don’t encourage the guy.

    Muhammad Fazl,

You literally are taking verbal diarrhea to new definitions.

Try and stay away from CT or you will be the next Dayan Jayathilleke.

Fazil, I want to address the following point, which you made in the above article:
‘Interestingly, as per this site, the highest case of rape seems to occur mostly in highly developed countries with equally high literate populations. So in essence, the age-old myth of focusing on uneducated characters when identifying rapists seems to be far-fetched.’

Your argument here is based on the idea that development and literacy are contributing factors to improved social systems. Wouldn’t you also agree that countries with high human development indices and literacy rates would encourage victims of abuse to step forward and report? Wouldn’t you agree that in such a country, the social net would allow and protect the voice of someone who has been taken advantage of? This is why the ‘incidence’ of rape is higher there. It’s not because of the state of development, in fact the state of development is one that looks after victims of such ordeals and allows laws to be put into action against perpetrators.

I know you move on to talk about the other side of the argument- less developed countries where the incidence of rape is recorded in lower numbers. The country you refer to here is Saudi Arabia (as per the link provided). My point here, is that you cannot accept low rape statistics at face value. Take a look around. Even in our own country, we live in a culture where even though rape is criminalized by law, it is not as straightforward to report. The average citizen does not have as much faith in law and justice. Moreover, the system is one where judgement, negativity and heavy scrutiny will be targeted at the victim. In my view, this is a system that does not encourage women to come forward and report abuse and rape. Even though there are laws that should protect them. Even though what happened to them was categorically and unforgivably wrong.

Let’s not get carried away by these statistics. They should be presented practically and reasonably if you want to strengthen your argument.

    Muhammed Fazl my brother:

Reading the comments it looks like you have a Big Fan Club of ” Muslim” haters. For the racist Sinhalese anything Tamil is evil and anything Muslim is Evil. But I have a different perspective on this and the only aspects that I am critical of Islam is the extreme practices such as the ones by IS. There are many good aspects in Islam.

I havent read your previous Article but unlike the other commentators I am not going to criticise you for the sake of criticising.

Let me give you my take on this.

The incident that has brought this discussion about Rape is the aftermath of what happened to ” Vithaya”. It was laufghable when Dayan wrote that the nation was shocked. Where was the Nation when ” Krihanthi” was raped and the entire family was brutally murdered. Dayan was busy defending the THUG who swept everything under the Carpet when it happend on his patch. I hope the buger rots in HELL.

1)I believe the burning issue of rape is yet to be taken seriously… let alone be addressed.

*** I agree with the above but why would you take it seriously when the victims are mostly Tamils. The Racists will be up in arms but so be it and who cares. They control all wings of the Security Aparatus.
The reason why what happpend to ” Vithya” happened was because we have a Sinhalese Police and Army enforcing Law & Order who have turned out to be partners in CRIME.

Can you imagine a Police force entirely made of Tamils drawn from the Locals allowing such a Crime to happen. NO.

    2) To make matters worse, the moment sensible suggestions are put forward, the supposedly ‘learned’ ones tend to blow a fuse when they realize of a possible requirement to make ‘lifestyle’ adjustments for the greater good of the not-so-fortunate living amongst us.

*** This is what happens when you have a Foreign Sinhalese Army.

    3) Clarifying any misconceptions one might have based on my last article, AT NO STAGE have I justified rape, blamed the rape victim or made an indication of being an apologist for the perpetrator. Readers need to understand the difference between blaming a victim and blaming probable and/or negative external influences behind such crimes.

*** Rape is one of the oldest Crimes Humanity has witnessed. There are many factors that contribute to it. Some are man made and some are beyond our control.
    Let me list them:

    Man Made:

    Change in life style
    Night Clubs
    Free Use of Alcohol
Social Night Outs wit no Parental control
Pornography which is like inciting Racial Violence.
It gives the impression that Women are Sexual Objects and are there to be attacked. It is a Free for all and men when they become highly intoxicated lose sight of the Moral Code and go to the extreme.

Beyond our Control:I( I mean the control of Tamils)

Some women have no protection and are vulnerable to such terrible Crime.
Organised Crime by Gangs due to lack of willingnes or abilty

    4) It is also unfortunate that to date, there exist not an effective judicial system nor a pilot plan to contain the menace.

*** Is it surprising that the above happens when the THUG pardons the killers of Krishanthi.

5)Interestingly, as per this site, the highest case of rape seems to occur mostly in highly developed countries with equally high literate populations.

*** I agree partially with the above and I have given my reasons above. But take South Africa for intance which has the highest incidence of Rape . It happens amongs black population often the cause is Alocohol

    6) So in essence, the age-old myth of focusing on uneducated characters when identifying rapists seems to be far-fetched.

*** I am sure you will see you are not 100% correct.

    7) Woman dancing in a clubFurthermore, with prostitution being legal in most of the countries in the list above, discount one must to a certain extent the possibility of sexual frustration being a factor.

*** This is what men do when they want to unwind after a hard days work and I have nothing against it as long as men know their limits.
To watch and not to touch.

    8) Paradoxically, forced sex can take place when there is a need for sexual gratifications as well. In this context, though I cannot be certain of rapists experiencing a feeling of pleasure while at it, it is possible for the act to be some sort of a fulfilment of a sick craving, if not purely a physical one… or even a combination of both.

*** Sexual act has to be consensual but this puts the men in a diificult position and the law is heavily biased towards Women.
The case of Celebrities recently is a vivid example.

    9) While I reiterate the fact that rapists have NO EXCUSES WHATSOEVER for their actions, however bitter it may be, for the sake of containing this menace, it becomes important for us to acknowledge truths that are clear and cut.

*** For me to eliminate the meance of Rape there should be a Strict code of Conduct and I am not sure if I would invoke Sharia Law but if that would solve the Problem I would be happy to take the good bits.

    10) They say it takes two to tango and having lived in the USA where women get drunk and end up with strangers for ‘one night stands’, occurrences are so regular that even though it can be considered technically as rape, seldom complaints are lodged.

*** This is what I call contributory Negleigence

    11) Women are NEVER equal to men. Both are unique and have different strengths and weaknesses. Had women been equals, I believe the need for women to be protected by men does not arise.

*** Have you not heard of Women Bouncers. Sadam had a Women Brigade to protect him but Sadam was clever and he calculated that if he employed Pretty Women he will be spared as the attakers will be busy attacking the Women Brigade for sexual pleasure.

Man he was a Genious and that is why he hid in a Bunker.

Practical Solutions To Curb The Rate Of Rape

I should have added that for many men who travel on the fast lane Rape is a Pit Stop ( if you know what that means) and the Practical Solution is to have everlasting Tyres and enough fuel.

Practical solution is to castrate and Lorena Bobbitise those found guilty of rape. That will fix them forever.

Very surprising to note that Fazl who writes on many social
issues easily forgot to take into account that just in the
recently held presidential election, MARA received 5.8
million votes ! It does matter to read this mind set to
read what the majority of Buddhist want for their country
despite a recognized Buddhist leader Ven.Sobitha,JVP,UNP,
a section of SLFP,SF,civil orgs all explaining the danger
of re-electing MARA.Srilankan politics is partially deaf and
blind and nearly bankrupt. To reverse the situation, minimum
will take another 30 yrs and still, not full recovery
because the current situation is 67 yrs old. And most of
your treatment options are coming at the cost of women’s
freedom and with the shots of Sharia doses discolouring
even some of your good suggestions. It is a tough job.
The rapists are mainly criminal minded animal-like creatures
in human form hunting for their targets.Law enforcing
agencies have a bigger role to protect the vulnerable
people from dangers of falling victims to criminals.
One major weakness is,these agencies act only after
something happened and even for that to happen, there should
be a big ha hoo about a case,in many cases. They must first
bring down the crime rates on a regular basis.I fully agree
that ‘cat calling’,teasing, touching and groping must be
immediately stopped. And one more thing I like to remind
Fazl about separate seating in public transport. I remember
Fouzi as transport minister once introduced a bus service
on a certain route only for LADIES.Later the service was
rolled down, due to lack of passengers !

Promote love and dates (euphemism for safe sex) educate sex in mixed schools, turn a blind eye to date rapes (of course, willing and not without consent) in spacious unisex wash rooms with free condoms, if contraception failed in a hurry ‘don’t abort’ counselling so that she can part with the baby for adoption, ruse to sell and get a good rate for ‘teen mother delivered, healthy susceptible to infant’s infections’. If adolescent kids are made cheeky to defy parents then can publish data: condoms sold, how many aborted, how many committed suicide. Good riddance! Croc tears?

This issue is connected to many other burning issues that
are not raised together so that we can at least try to find
both short and long term strategies to combat the issues. The
country is full of thieves ,small and big, corrupt to the
core at every given opportunity both in public and private
sectors, people of all walks of life are never happy of
anything, be it business or anything else. Cut throats in
every sphere of life in every nook and corner. everyone is
in denial. Nobody stands the progress of another fellow
being and the situation gets worst when the community is
different. Mahinda made things disastrous by trying to
exploit the situation rather than defusing, for his own
political advantage. Schools are not expected to take
social responsibilities of the country. They are just
producing ineffective human engines that are useless on the
roads.Under all these and more untold circumstances, how
can we effectively find a lasting solution by isolating
only one particular crime ? We read news reports that
sex had been demanded by school principals from mothers
of children for schools admissions. The cinema artists
(actresses) had to sleep with the Rupavhini and ITN
authorities for prime time slots of their Tele dramas
before the Tele cast on top of a payment as bribe Rs.
50,000.according to latest revelations. Are they not
silent rape and playing with people’s dignity and
investment ? People’s dignity has to be upheld for a
country to progress and dying for monetary progress
alone will only add to more crimes.

Rapist are sick criminals. They should be given the death sentence whenever found guilty or a life sentence to serve 40 years without being able to leave the prison. They should also be hopused with other sex criminals so that they will get a taste of their own medicine.
