Questions To USJ Senate On Namal Rajapaksa’s ‘Dodgy’ PhD Attempt

There had been a number of stories about a PhD program by Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa at the University of Sri Jayawardenepura. As published by Colombo Telepgraph earlier, the junior Rajapaksa has been successful in securing the senate and academic council for this program.

Former Higher Education Minister and Namal

Former Higher Education Minister and Namal

The University in its Senate Report 316.08.05 said that it has approved the candidacy of Lakshman Namal Rajapaksa for a PhD program under the registration number 1805SS2011001 for a research on a study on the Social Cultural Factors influencing Child Sex Abuse in Sri Lanka under the supervision of Prof N L A Karunaratna who was the former Vice Chancellor of the university and Prof M W Jayasundara, the Dean of the Criminology Department of the university. The appointed examiners are Prof Sarath Amarasinghe of the Ruhuna University and Prof Daya Amarasekera of the Peradeniya University.

As far as Colombo Telegraph understands Namal Rajapaksa does not possess with necessary qualifications to pursue a PhD study. According to university sources, even his basic degree is in question.

Thus, the Colombo Telegraph would request the university senate to respond to us for the following questions;

  1. Did Lakshman Namal Rajapaksa provide his necessary qualifications to pursue a PhD Program ? If so what are the provided qualifications
  2. Did the university counter-check the provided qualifications by the candidate?
  3. Does the university conduct MAQ examinations on annual basis for all applicants? If so when was the MAQ exam held for the years 2013 and 2014?
  4. Did Rajapaksa sit for a special MAQ exam conducted by the university only for him?
  5. What are the qualifications to sit for a MAQ exam and does Rajapaksa have those qualifications? If so please provide us with the details.

“According to university sources, even his basic degree is in question.”

So, what’s wrong with that? Seems like he’s perfectly qualified to be a Sri Lankan politician, i.e. he doesn’t have proper education.

Get the Current Application Requirements for a Ph.D. Programme at the University (in sri Lanka).

Just for Comparison, I picked the PhD admission requirements at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

      http://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phd/admission_requirements

      PhD admission requirements
      Prerequisites
In order to apply for the PhD programme at NTNU you must have:

      A master’s degree or equivalent education, that is approved by the faculty where you want to study;
A strong academic record with a B average or higher — spesifically, a weighted average from your final two years of study (equivalent to 120 credits) must average a B or higher, corresponding with NTNU’s grading system.
      What to expect
The PhD education programme is primarily comprised of active research work under supervision and includes:

completion of an independent piece of research (PhD project) in active cooperation with other researchers
writing a PhD thesis based on the PhD project
approved organized academic training, ( cf. § 7.3 )(pdf)
participation in active research groups in Norway and internationally
scientific and academic dissemination, including the publication of the PhD project work
Each doctoral candidate’s study is typically financed by a research fellowship, the availablity of which ae generally published as jobs on the vacancies webpage. Typically, doctoral studies at NTNU are coordinated by a specific department. The department with which you wish to study can provide you with general information, information about available positions, as well as help you find the right supervisor within a particular field of study as well.

      Application and admissions
You must apply for admission on NTNU’s application form. A “PhD plan”, including a project description, must be completed in cooperation with your main supervisor and must specify which issues are being considered, the scientific approach, theory, and method.

The application for admission must include a PhD plan with: (1) a plan for organized academic training; (2) a project description; (3) a proposed supervisor(s); (4) a work schedule; (5) a funding plan; (6) an estimate of required scientific and material resources; (7) a scientific dissemination plan; (8) a plan for meeting residency requirements; (9) an explanation of how the applicant can participate with active research groups in Norway and internationally.

For additional requirements and more comprehensive information please see “Regulations concerning the philosophiae doctor degree (PhD) at NTNU.”

          JULAMPITIYE AMARAYA

          “PhD” Degree

Ph.D. stands (for the Latin philosophiae doctor or doctor philosophiae) for Doctor of Philosophy

“I am a graduate , having two degrees [IRC],from Welikada Prison, Borella Sri Lanka and JB [ jumping border]from Changi Prison,, Singapore.”

“I can get certificates from Maanal Jarpassa and Hothambaya Jarapassa as I have done many contracts for them..”

All you need is to get Welikada Prison University , Borella and JB [ jumping border]from Changi Prison University,,Singapore. to be recognized Universities ( $ 1 Billion?) and get the Medamulana MaRas to get apperoval to be able to grant Ph.D. Degrees in Subjects of Abduction, Tortures, and Executions,

Remember, in the context of academic degrees, the term philosophy does not refer solely to the field of philosophy, but is used in a broader sense in accordance with its original Greek meaning, which is “love of wisdom”.

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_of_Philosophy

Doctor of Philosophy, abbreviated as PhD, Ph.D., D.Phil., or DPhil[1] in English-speaking countries and originally as Dr.Philos. or Dr.Phil. (for the Latin philosophiae doctor or doctor philosophiae), is in many countries a postgraduate academic degree awarded by universities. The academic level known as a doctorate of philosophy varies considerably according to the country, institution, and time period, from entry-level research degrees to higher doctorates. A person who attains a doctorate of philosophy is automatically awarded the academic title of doctor.

A University of Oxford Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in full academic dress.
In the context of academic degrees, the term philosophy does not refer solely to the field of philosophy, but is used in a broader sense in accordance with its original Greek meaning, which is “love of wisdom”. In most of Europe, all fields other than theology, law, and medicine were traditionally known as philosophy, and in Germany and elsewhere in Europe the basic faculty of (liberal) arts was known as the faculty of philosophy. The doctorate of philosophy as it exists today thus originated as a doctorate in the liberal arts at the Frederick William University, becoming common in large parts of the world in the 20th century.[

We have read how Gaddaffis son gifted Millions to the University in
UK where he is supposed to have Graduated. In the case of our

why not the authorities take actions against Namal# Baby first degree? Was that not the case that many thought that it was just through father s contacts ? When and how could have such a candidate to receive a degree of that kind should be investigated without delay. We dont know the truth of anything – since most of the information airing are not connected to any proofs. So I believe the kind of investigations can clear the both sides.

Actually a bachelors degree at a minimum is compulsory . . Some people do a masters first and then go on to to a PhD. In Russia the basic degree is called a MSc, but it is the equivalent of a BA or BSc. I believe that some universities is Australia also call their first degree a masters. But the bottom line is that an undergraduate degree is a critical prerequisite before entering a PhD program. There again most reputed universities require the candidates to pass a qualifying exam before they can proceed to do the comprehensive exam. They are given the PhD candidacy only after that. The PhD degree is awarded only after an independent research and a thesis written and defended. I can only attest to the western system.
Clearly in the past 10 years inSL, there was blatant abuse of power and indulgence in nepotism and family dynasty building. If the SL university dons were coerced in to such fraud, it is an insult to the rest of the intellectuals in the country who have earned their credentials properly.

If the allegations are true, comes to mind the questions often asked – Does’nt the Rajapakse family have an ounce of shame in dressing themselves up with false qualifications? First the father and now the eldest son. If there is such provision, the Law College should review the Degree given to the young man and get him to sit for it again with all other students – subject to an examination by qualified and non-political examiners.

The way Namal answered the NDTV reporter Srinivasan Jain exposes his poor level of education and knowledge. His answer it is because of the dynastic rule of the extended family the war was won will go down well in the halls of comedy. The low IQ level of the Rajapakses was once more subject to test and public ridicule in this interview and remains woefully exposed.

well said, in that NDTV interview Namal baby was like a fish just out of water, no idea or any sense of those answers.

Rajapaksas have done so much damage for this country in every other way except for being part of the war victory though killing thousands in cold blood.

With these exposed in todays social media, Sri Lankan qualifications will be a joke – just like it happens in India quite often.

Maithree and Ranil need to make thins amended and make the education sector impartial and according to international standards.

The value of a PhD is ridiculed by MR regime since even toilet cleaners and the like were offered honorary Dr titles as if they had no idea about the higher degree. Alone the fact – MERVIN to repeat in press conference ” I am a Doctor -Acharaya” sounded as if the man is empowered by his men for getting things done through his stupid nature. Today the very same man to go against the bunch of thieves (Sharks of the heaps)- is more than enough defeated Rajapakshe to realize that he was the key player of the all line. Yakada mallata gullo gahuwita panmalle gana monawa kathada ? So all in all, we are like as if we cant realize how quickly the reign of MR and thugs avanlanched. Jaya is before the nation – all steps now being taken will shape up the nation to a healthy country.

CT please add more concerns specially the medium of language of the Phd. if it is in English how the university has ascertained his competency of the particular language,
also in the selection process the applicant should defend the proposal of the proposed study in a formal interview presided by a panel of senior dons of the particular subject or the department.
perhaps by looking at answers we would get for these questions from concerned parties we will be able to get an idea about the quality of graduate programmes of our national universities as well. thanks CT. good work..

This article indicates the core is rotten. When Intellectual elite compromise established norms for personal benefit, there is no way a country can prosper. How can the Traffic cop expect to enforce the law when the violator gladly folds a 5000 rupee note and hands over his license? We are all human, and susceptible to greed and hunger.

Moreover when the superiors are stealing and taking bribes by the millions, to expect the clerical staff to be law abiding citizens is expecting way too much.

There was a time when Sri Lankan education was something to be proud of. Today, I do not think there is much to be proud of. It is only a vehicle and means to a job.

My teachers imparted knowledge and exams were a measurement. Today, children learn to take tests…and nothing else.

I have a cousin who barely passed his A/ls and now has a MBA from a British University. WITHOUT A BACHELORS….How, you ask? MONEY. The chap cannot draft an email without grammar and spelling mistakes…

These guys havn’t spared any sector from gold dealing to toilet cleaning.

There is doubt about the manner the Attorney at Law examination was conducted and how this guy answered same and also recorded a very high percentage of marks not achieved for atleast 60 years.
This itself needs to be verified. He is supposed to have passed LLb from a university in the UK with which he was admitted to the Attorney at Law examination.

Now aiming at a PhD? It would be of much interest to all public as to how the whole process was allowed and the persons involved in supporting same.

No one should be surprised about the decision taken by the University of Sri jayewardenepura senate and the council approving the candidacy of Lakshman Namal Rajapaksa for a PhD program at that University. Sri Jayawardenepura University is run by a vice chancellor who happened to be always a sucker or a boot licker of the president of the country. All the heads are suckers of the Vice chancellor. Dean of a faculty is one of the heads of a department of that faculty and hence another sucker will also be the Dean. As such, most members of the senate and the council will all be suckers of the president of the country. This approval was given during the previous VC Dr. N L A Karunaratna who is also known as Kanyaratna, an obedient boot licker of Rajapaksa. The present VC Sampath Amarathunga has performed the same act in a better way to secure the VC position before Rajapaksa was deposed. The quality of the qualifications obtained from this University is questionable. As proof SB Dissanayake, who wanted to strip Chandrika Kumarathunga naked and drag her like an insane woman, is a product of this University.

The two supervisers and the two examiners have obviously sold their self respect to invent a PhD title to Namal R, for a mess of pottage.
The average PhD program lasts four, or at least in exceptional circumstances, two years, of full time study/research – in any field, in any university.
A preliminary requirement is a master’s degree with high marks, in same or related subject(s).
A person who has other interests needing constant irregular attendance such as a member of parliament, cannot devote required hours to the task.
Sri lanka may be the only country where this can happen.

This is the usual run of things in the Resplendent Isle in recent decades. I was aghast when two young men I knew as lawyers, doing
virtual clerical work for 2nd tier President’s Counsel, were made PC’s themselves. Both were political appointments and both knew much
less law and procedure as would other average Proctors. And we are
made to believe that a PC is, in effect, the equivalent of KCs/QCs
of yore. My word! The names of those giants of the law – who were held in such esteem in the entire Commonwealth – to be associated with such
imbeciles. The “credit” to lower our standards in the legal fraternity must go to the Rajapakses. But they were not the first to ruin the system. Astonishingly, it was JRJ’s 1977 Govt. that openly devalued the system then – elevating ordinary lawyers merely because they were Party wags. The rot degenerated since then.

Most of the inventions have come from people who not only had no PhD but did not have proper school education either.

Michael Faraday, Benjamin Fraklin, Oliver Heaviside, James Clerk Maxwell are a few who come to my mind. Taking Heaviside, all engineering graduates know about the Heaviside operator D, whcich is used to solve Diffrential Equations. It is surprising that a man who had no proper school education could have the inspiration of inventing D.

PhD’s are not entirely useless. But unfortunatel they are used as some sort of decorative ornaments. The problem with University education (especially engineering) in SL is that the academics have no industrial experience and are versed ith Maths and theory.

Hey now, lets not leave out Rohitha the Space Scientist .

    Quoting the Daily Financial Times

“Rohitha Rajapaksa, the youngest son of the President and a space engineer having graduated from the University of Southampton, is currently reading for his PHD in the field of Space at the Department of Mathematics, University of Colombo. “

“A recent notable achievement is the completion of his first year of ongoing research on optimisation of space debris mitigation and strategy analysis.”

Oh Wow!!! Optimization , Space debris mitigation , Strategy Analysis.
Soo many big technical sounding terms; probably writer just wanted to get his/her money’s worth from that Thesarus lying around.

    Readers, please see the followings:

This is what Jayawardenapura University needs for MA/PhD entrance: http://www.fgs.sjp.ac.lk/index.php/academic-programs-/by-course-work/social-sciences

This is what Peradeniya University needs for MA/PhD entrance: http://www.pdn.ac.lk/arts//postgraduate/admission.pdf

This is what Moratuwa University needs for MA/PhD entrance: http://www.mrt.ac.lk/foa/pgs/documents/PGS%20Handbook.pdf

Moratuwa University’s aim for PhD is: to enable students to develop their capabilities to conduct independent research and to transfer knowledge at the forefront of a discipline by making an original contribution to knowledge.

Let’s discuss now, whether this guy Namal has any qualifications to enter these universities to PhD program and most importantly, how in the world the professor guy (Prof N L A Karunaratna who was the former Vice Chancellor of the university) form Japura agreed to advise Namal to do PhD under his supervision? Really? This is what we are talking about – these cheap academics are sold out, shameful people, work for cheap perks? Does third class work for ransom? Expecting third class higher position through MR? No integrity for higher education? Stupid and Dump Professors? By the way, Karunaratna is just one of the cheap guys, who did this for MR’s deal. There are hundreds in all Sri Lankan universities (Peradeniya, Colombo, Japura, Moratuwa, Sabaragamuwa, Uva Wellassa, Jaffna, Batticaloa, open university, UGC, Sri Lanka Foundation and many others are (were) sold out for Rajapakse’s cheap deal. MR basically bought all of them like “Spoiled Bala Maalu”. These academic beggars will sell anything for Rajapakse for Cheap deal. That is the state of affair of Higher Education in Sri Lanka. Matter of fact, there are so many great people who do great things in Sri Lankan universities and fighting future education and freedom of education. That said, Sri Lankan higher education was one of best higher education systems in the world and produced many great minds. After Rajapakse(s) and especially someone name SB Dissa as minister everything is (was) collapse and went to garbage. I remember someone from Colombo University said, SB is the best higher education minister in the history of our country who understands the reality of our universities need. Can you believe this statement? The person said he would send CBK half naked in the road. He is the best Higher Education Minister of Sri Lanka. This is how these cheap academics are sold out for check perks.

MS, RW, Rajeewa, and Kabir Hassim, this is your time to clean this mess. Send all these cheap people out of the systems and put people who have integrity for higher education. Finally, send the dump Namal guy to Sirimao Bandaranayaka MMV or Tangalle MMV to do GCE O/L.

Two stories:Namal Rajapaksa took oaths as Attorney-at-Law and two students arrested for exam fraud

Please read these and see the photos. CJ 43 and the Ministers in MS’s cabinet are all there. Cannot trust any politician or the CJs

I think our country sank to the lowest depth and i think so many Maithrees are needed to pull us out of this garbage well. Lets see whether JVP can do this job. They are at the navy guy but they are leaving Namal alone.
Now navy guy must pay 300 million if he has to leave the navy. That is not too much for the Royal family.
Royal Thathi is very upset about exposing corruption. Shouldn’t we search for the lamboginis in Dubai.
About the gold story- narrator has to be believed first !!!

Such a shame Tamilnadu, the Tamil diaspora and the Americans and the Brits egged by the Tamils voted out our God MR on Jan 08. If not, soon we would have had Namal Baba as the youngest CJ in history. He could have then had some training as a lawyer. But that’s OK. Like Sunil Perera and the Gypsies sang in Singnore “labana sare api demung ko veday” (We’ll give the works the next time)

1 Wife is a rumoured equestrian (LOL!) wannabe….Wonder if the poor ponies have back problems?
    2. Astronautical academy proposed in Pallekelle at a cost of $300 million for the youngest brat’s alleged interest in stars.
    3. Another brat gets unethical privileges in the SL Navy
    4. The brat groomed as the heir to the throne has a law degree without passing the requirements.
    5. Canniving siblings looted the country’s treasury

Wow! MR really upheld family values!

But Darshanapathi does not refer to “PhD”. It is the Sinhala term for “MPhil”. We call Darshana-visharada for PhD. What’s the fuss here?
