A Buddhist Monk from Batticaloa has threatened to kill a grama sevaka for filing several court cases against Sinhalese living in the district.
Using absolute filth in Sinhala, Ampitiye Sumana, a monk from the Batticaloa Mangalarama said, “You are a bloody tiger. My blood boils when I see you. You are a bloody dog. You are a Tamil Grama Sevaka. You have been filing case after case against our Sinhalese. Stop filing cases against the Sinhalese. Go and take action against what is happening in Wilpattu and Siripada. If you even send out one Sinhalese from their lands, I will end the rule by the Thambiyas and the Demalas. I will smash you. This is my last warning to all of you,” the monk said.
The monk said that in the past the tigers had killed the Sinhalese, now they are attacking them. He said that the only reason he was not harming the Grama Sevaka was because of the police uniform. During the incident, which occurred on a main road, several police officers including a senior police officer was also present.
The threats were made against the Grama Sevaka by the monk in front of the police officers. The senior police officer who was present at the time of the incident, tried to calm the monk and take him away to a jeep which was parked on the main road.
While walking away, the monk told the Grama Sevaka, “I will smash him till he dies.”

Arrest all those who incited racism, President Maithripala Sirisena had instructed the IGP and Chiefs of Security Forces at the Security Council meeting held this week at the President’s Official Residence in Colombo.
Ministers Rajitha Senaratne, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Mano Ganesan, Sagala Rathmayaka, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, the IGP and Chiefs of Security Forces attended the Security Council meeting.
Minister Mano Ganesan drew the attention of the President to a statement made by the Buddhist Monk of Mangalarama Temple in Batticaloa recently and said that the statement had hurt the Tamil people.
Responding to this President stated that this monk was talking a lot after a former politician’s visit to this temple.
The President also asked about enacting new laws to enable actions against people who incited racism.
Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said steps had already been taken to draft the law and pointed out that even under the existing provisions of the Penal Code, inciters of racism were liable for one year imprisonment.

Some commentators have started pointing an accusing finger at the Tamil Grama Sevaka who was at the receiving end of this ‘mad dog monk’.
Though Colombo Telegraph had put up this item with video footage, the background to this incident has not been told to the readers.
I contacted a journalist friend who was able to relate to me when, how and where this incident happened. Here is the story.
The incident happened on last Friday (11 November 2016)in the Keviliya Madu area in the Batticaloa district when a group of Sinhalese led by this ‘mad dog monk’ conducted a sit-in protest on the Batticaloa-Moneragala Road blocking the traffic.
The demonstrators are all illegal squatters from the Ampara district illegally occupying state land in Batticaloa distict reserved as pasture land for the cattle farmers of the Batticaloa district. Some 200 Sinhala families from the adjoining Ampara district are reportedly illegally occupying the pasture land.
Over 200 acres of state land have been reserved as pasture land and Batticaloa cattle farmers take their stock for grazing. This is the only pasture land available for the Batticaloa cattle farmers. The Tamil Batticaloa cattle farmers had been complaining for a long time that these squatters chase away their cattle and seize their cattle and slaughter them.
Following repeated complaints, the District Development Committee (DDC) which consists of all elected MPs and Provincial Councilors had passed a resolution that legal action should be taken against these illegal squatters. The Tamil Grama Sevaka of the area had to take legal action against some of them and eight Sinhalese illegal squatters had been prosecuted.
On the day of the incident, these Sinhalese squatters were blocking the road against the order to evict them. They were demanding that the land they occupy should be given to them and that the particular area should be demarcated and joined up with the Ampara district. The ‘mad dog monk’ had been intervening on behalf of these Sinhalese illegal squatters for some time. He has also built a Buddhist vihara in the area illegally occupied by these Sinhalese villagers who are all from the neighbouring Ampara district.
When the sit-in protest and the blocking of the Batticaloa-Moneragala road was reported to the Divisional Secretary Ms Thatchanamoorthy,she had gone to the site taking with her this Grama Sevaka and other officials of the DS Division. She had gone there to tell the protesters that legal action had been mandated by the Batticaloa District Development Committee (DDC) and that prosecution against the illegal squatters had been initiated at the instruction of the Government Agent following the DDC decision.
It appears that this ‘mad dog monk’ had also been behind another illegal occupation of state land by Sinhalese in another area in Batticaloa district claiming that these people previously lived there. This is at a place called Punnaikudah in the Eravur Divisional Secretary Division which has caused friction between the Sinhalese squatters and the Tamils & Muslims in that area.
I understand that this ‘mad dog monk’ has a powerful patron in Mahinda Rajapakse who recently visited his Mangala Ramaya vihara in the heart of Batticaloa Town. That perhaps explain why the Police Officers are scared of this mad dog even when he tried to assault them as seen in another video.
Regrettably there is no political opposition from the Tamil MPs against the activities of this ‘mad dog monk’ who is doing lot of damage to the reconciliation efforts of the government and causing a rift between the Tamils and Sinhalese.
Even the Muslim MPs are keeping silent despite this monk carrying out a demonstration against the Muslims in the Batticaloa town bazzar where the Muslim traders have their shops. At this demonstration held not long ago to protest about the incident involving the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province and a Sinhalese Navy Officer he made many provocatory remarks against the Muslims. I heard that Batticaloa Muslim traders though seething with anger kept their cool.

Today this ‘MAD MONK/THUG’ is upto mischief in Pangunaveli on the Batticaloa- Badulla road, which branches off at Senkaladi, with a bus load of Sinhalese. He is refusing to accept the court order with regard to nine acres of land he claims. as belonging to an old Buddhist vihara. The police are acting with restraint under trying circumstances.
I know the area and the spot. I have not seen any signs of stone pillars at the spot. This was also an area under LTTE control for long time. The residents say the concrete pieces being claimed to be remnants of a Buddhist Vihara belonged to a water distribution point. There is an old PILLAIYAR temple/shrine on the other side of the road and a new one is now under construction. The villagers also say that as far as they remember there were no Sinhala settlers in the area.
I have seen wild elephants in the vicinity of the ‘ Karruppu Paalam’ (Black Bridge ).
What is the game being played by this so-called monk and his backers? Is this government alive to the consequences?

This area is an archealogical site but hindus built a statue of a huge Hindu God on it. When we visited this temple in 80’s there were no statue like this. The Sinhala people who we living in the East had to face a number of waves of attacks from the LTTE and had to shift their residences from one place to another. Many hundreds were hacked to death while thousands were forced to leave their houseS handing over the control of their lands to Tamil Tiger terrorists.
Some of the much published massacres of the Sinhala people in Ampara and Batticaloa took place in the villages such as, Aranathalwa (34 killed) , Pottuvil (25), Thirukkovil (678),Peraveltalawa (9), Bogamuwa (25), Lahugala (16), Borapola (9), Amapara town (25), 209 mile post (14), Mangalagama (16), Panama (12), Uhana( 5), Uwaragaltenne (2), Iginyagla (11), Goangala(57), Batticaloa (14),Eravur (25), Mankdeniya (3). These figures refer only to the killings but such brutal incidents caused untold damage to the stability of their living and most of the villagers were either forced to leave the Eastern province or live together in protected locations.
After the war against the LTTE terrorists was over the Sinhala people slowly put up houses in a number of villages to lead a peaceful life in the areas which they occupied before they were chased away. BUT, they did not have any legal documents to prove their rights to the land as they had to leave everything and escape from the marauding Tamil Tigers.

Uthayan newspaper has published a news item today (16 November 2016) that this ‘mad dog monk’ forcibly entered and sat down in a private land in Pungudaveli on the Chenkalady-Badulla road in Batticaloa district. This incident is reported to have caused great tension in the area.
Meanwhile last Monday, members of the public, government officials and civil society representatives forced the closure of the Divisional Secretary Office in Pattilpalai and protested calling for legal action against the mad monk. TNA MP Yogeswaran, former TNA MP Selvarajah and several TNA Provincial Council members were present at the scene in support of the protest action.
It has also now emerged that the present GA Batticaloa Ms Charles had been covertly supporting the mad dog monk and it is alleged that she had not reported the mad dog monk to the police for trying to assault the former woman DS of the Pattipalai when the mad dog monk gate crashed into her office and abused her in filth. Ms Charles previously served as GA in the Kilinochchi district where she was accused of being in the pockets of former Minister Basil Rajapakse and carrying out his instructions. She was later transferred as GA Batticaloa and TNA MPs from Batticaloa openly campaigned for her transfer from Batticaloa. It is said that she then got close to Deputy Ministers Ameer Ali and Hisbullah and the two Muslim MPs from Batticaloa reportedly stopped the transfer. She is now being accused by the Tamils of working against the interests of Batticaloa Tamils.
One Tamil website has reported that Deputy Minister Ameer Ali is closely associating with the mad dog monk despite the monk’s anti-Muslim outbursts.

Lankasri website has provided further information relating to mad dog monk’s forceful intrusion into a private land in Pungudaveli.
Here is the link to the story which comes with pictures of the mad dog monk protesting and shows the presence of many police officers.
According to this news item, the mad dog monk had gone there taking with him Sinhalese people from neighbouring Sinhala districts and sat down refusing to leave until the Government Agent arrives.
Tamil people from the village gathered too and the TNA MP from the area too had come to the scene. This had created great tension. Despite the Police Officers and the TNA MP requesting him to leave the land he had refused to leave until the GA arrives but the GA has refused to go there and had asked the police officers to settle the problem by themselves.
With tension escalating and the Tamil public getting agitated the police managed to get the mad dog monk leave.
It is stated that the mad dog monk had been repeatedly claiming the particular land as an ancient Buddhist site and demanding that it be given to him. The owner of the land had to go to the court and get an order from the judge. The order forbade the mad dog monk from entering the land. Today this mad dog had gone there with a group of Sinhalese despite the court order. The order was shown to the police officers but the police officers did not arrest him for breaching the judge’s ban preventing the mad dog monk from entering the said land.
Here, once again Sinhala police officers had failed to take action against a Buddhist monk who was not only openly breaching a court order but creating a communal clash between Sinhalese and Tamils.

Most of the world is still praising our “Yahapalanaya” government for a much improved “Human Rights” ambience in the country, but we are now beginning to realise that things are beginning to go horribly wrong.
In the name of religion, we are allowing people to get away with almost anything. I’m having to spend a lot of time finding out about all sorts of groups and persons whom I knew nothing of.
So, I’ve been reading about the “Sri Lanka Thowheed Jamath”. It is clear that they are a most unsavoury lot, who want Sharia Law to be administered among “their people”. I cannot agree with what I have seen Dr.Rajasingham Narendran say about this group in some place which I cannot now recall. Dr. Narendran appears to be an elderly gentleman who speaks out fiercely when he has to.
However, I cannot agree with him that tolerance should be shown to Abdul Razick of Maligawatte. Dr Narendran says that Razick has done no harm to a person from any other community. He is “only” trying to administer Sharia Law among his community. No, this cannot be! If a girl who is little more than a child is forced to marry a much older man (who immediately proceeds to father a child)? That cannot be tolerated in our country. The girl is a Sri Lankan citizen, and should be entitled to certain minimum degrees of protection.
Anyway, Razick has been arrested, so we’re all right on that score. I’ve now heard him speak – excellent Sinhala, although his own language is Tamil.
And they’ve arrested a man who answers to the strange name of “Dan Priyasad”. He, too, seems to be getting what his behaviour richly entitles him to.
But just what is being done to the Rajapaksas? When is their Day of Reckoning to be? Now, now, I’m getting too abstract.
Much more to the point, when are we going to take action against Ampitiye Sumanarathana Thero of Mangalarama Temple, and Galagoda Atte Gnanasara Thero? Sri Lanka comes very close to the top on one of those ranking lists for countries. The list is for “Most Religious Countries”. That those two “religious dignitaries” are still at large shows that they are “more equal” than their lay citizens.
What is getting proved now? That “when an ethnic minority fellow makes an error, the guilt – as measured by newspaper reports, or the statistics accumulating in a policeman’s head – is a shared guilt, a community-wide guilt. So, I have to be a little bit more responsible.”

Dear Monk, Tamils are not dogs; they are our brothers and sisters who have been living as a community for centuries. The only difference is that they speak a different language and their community in neighboring India is five times bigger than the Sinhalese community in Sri Lanka. Elsewhere I watched you speak carefully in front of the Batticaloa Government agent who is a Tamil. You called her ‘mother’ and begged her to resolve the grievances faced by your community. Then, I watched another video clip and you were speaking to the Chief of police in the area. You explained the issue very well but it looks like the authorities had not cared much about the people’s grievances (both Sinhalese and Tamils) in the past and that’s why you went beyond your ‘limits’.
Monks have played a pivotal role during the independence struggle and they were never scared of kings or invaders. They are powerful because they fight for justice on behalf of the poor! They are also the informal representatives of the forgotten poor. Politicians take every citizen (both rich and poor) for a ride and forget; the rich can somehow survive but not the poor. It is these monks who speak fearlessly on behalf of the forgotten poor. I don’t put all the blame on them but I cannot approve their aggressive behavior either.
I am of the opinion that authorities should pay more attention to the poor and it will definitely help the reconciliation efforts being made by any government in power.

That the Sinhalese are only found in Sri Lanka and largely evolved from native Tamil speaking tribes and Indian largely Tamils who converted to Buddhism in the south of the island, is not the fault of the Sri Lankan Tamils.
For your information these the r unique culture of the Sri Lankan Tamils is also native to the island and have evolved here and is only found in Sri Lanka. Sinhalese are also settled all over the world. Tamils from India have nothing to do with Tamils in the island, their history and culture evolved in India. They only a share a common language and religion with the Sri Lankan Tamils, as at one time Old Tamil/proto Dravidian and the what is called the Hindu form of worship was widely spread throughout the Indian subcontinent and this included the island. The ancestors of the modern Sinhalese were HIndu and spoke of form of Tamil, before they evolved into Sinhalese when they converted to Buddhism.

For your information the word Serendib and Serendipity is derived from the one of the ancient Tamil word for the island. Cheeran Theevu meaning the island belonging to the ancient Tamil kingdom of Chera. Modern day Kerala. The other Tamil ancient Tamil words to describe the island was Eelam/Eezham meaning the land of metal or toddy and the people of the island Eelavar or Eezhava. This became Hela in Sinhalese. Even now in Kerala there is a caste called Eezhava making up 28% of Kerala’s population, that was supposed to have migrated from the island during prehistoric times and are closely associated with toddy tapping. Even now in modern Tamil Iyam means a sheaf of metal and Illama in Sinhalese means a metal vein. Era means toddy in modern Tamil and the Sinhalese drop the E from Era and call toddy Ra.
Another ancient Tamil word for the island was Chingkallam meaning the land of red or copper coloured land. Chai/Chikappu means red and Cheppu means copper in Tamil. Alam means land or a sliver of land. Chikappu or Cheppu+Alam= Chingkalam. The people of the island were also called Chinkallavar in ancient Tamil and the island Chingkalla Theevu. When the southern part of the island became Buddhist and are now language and culture evolved there. The word Chingkallam was used to describe them and it became Sinhala and has nothing to do with a fake lion or the north Indian origin Vijaya myth. This was later concocted by the Buddhist monks to create a different origin for the Tamils who converted to Buddhism and were evolving as Sinhalese as they did not want them to identify with their Hindu brothers and sisters in the north and east and across the sea.
It is an irony now the two ancient Tamil words to describe the island, is now being used two the two ethnic population that evolved in the island. Chingkallam now Sinhala for the population that converted to Buddhism and created a new language down south by corrupting their local Tamil dialect with the Pali and Sanskrit of Buddhism and Eelam/Eezham or Eelam/Eezham Tamil for the population largely living in the north and east that remained Hindu or became Buddhist and reconverted back to Hinduism and retained their ancient Tamil language. Now the majority population that converted to Buddhism, created a new unique language and evolved as modern day Sinhalese are declaring the entire island is theirs only and the minority population largely living in the north and east of the island, that remained Hindu and retained the ancient Tamil/Elu language, that they do not belong and should be chased off to Hindu India and to Tamil Nadu where around 80-100 million speak Indian Tamil. This like the majority English in Britain now telling the much older Celtic Welsh and Scottish that they now do not belong.
The indigenous Tamils from the north and east and the north west coast have the same right to the island as the Sinhalese. Just because their relatives down south converted to Buddhism 2300 years ago and corrupted their Tamil language with Pali and Sanskrit to gradually evolve as Sinhalese. Yes Sinhalese may be unique to Sri Lanka but so is Eelam Tamil that has a much older history and both belong to the island not just one, that since independence is being protected and patronised and they other being systematically destroyed, thanks to the British who for their own selfish administrative convenience merged the Tamil lands of the north and east that had always remained separate with the Sinhalese lands down south to create a new colony named Ceylon which ironically is derived from Eelam/Eezham Eelam>Ceilon>Seilan>Ceylon and then left the island and the hapless Tamils in the hands of a racist/genocidal Sinhalese majority, with no form of federal solution or protection for the Tamil speaking minorities who were then around 33.33% of the population. The Eelam Tamil nation who were a 95% majority in their own lands in the north east and north west coast became a minority in the island now suffering and facing systematic discrimination and genocide thanks to the British in 1833 and in 1948. Yet the Sinhalese falsely state the British favoured the Tamils. The British never favoured the Tamils. They only used them and their hard work for their advantage but in reality always favoured the Sinhalese as their elite bum sucked the British
