I see there is evolutionary changes in Sri Lankan Bhikku populace. I remember in the good old days, that is 40 years or so ago. The visiting monks to our neighborhood holding an empty clay pot hiding it under the robe. They will stand for many minutes in front of our house begging for food in total silence like in a prayer. They used to be slim and almost malnourished. A true reflection of Lord Buddhas teaching detaching oneself from worldly pleasures.

The readers in Lanka should know that the food in this picture is nothing like the sumptuous buffet style meals we have in America. Sadly, the monks seem to be rather hungry and eating catered food from a cheap local eatery near a temple they are staying at. This kind of no frills meal is just a step above the cheapest McDonald’s meals in this country.
I feel extremely sad for the Third World when I realize that food is still such a major issue to the point that it is being pointed out in photos in this manner. When visiting India a few years back I saw abject poverty and my impression was Sri Lanka was much better despite a sad civil war that dragged on for years. Maybe I stand corrected.

First from the left on both pics – though are safron robed but a curse for many of the peace loving srilankens. His behaviours in the recent past in different occassions proved the nation that he is just a man in robes but trying to create new form of communal conflicts between sinhala and lanken muslims, this he has been continuing as the leader of the BBS (fanatic segment). He raised an issue that common man would not even consider as – halal issue just to divide the nation. Halal has namely been known to many of the traders for such a long time. Peace loving buddhists including myself would not no means allow this kind of men to tarnish buddhist image in SL. Neither do we want new kind of conflicts among folks. NGOs that finance their foreign stays seem to support them – latter is unfortunately not clear to the ministry of defece in the country.

Met 28 year old Monk travelling to Malaysia with me. I asked him what are you going to eat in malaysia as most food is Halaal there. Over indulgence in any thing is discouraged in Buddhism. No doubt it looks like a sumptuous meal. A local Dana could be more sumptuous with many more dishes and a choice of desert washed down with Thambili water. Although the food trays are big and full what is on the plates of the priests is normal quantity.
I am not convinced about the claim that the meal is buriyani with chicken. One does not use plastic fork and spoon to eat chicken.

Sadly CT seems to have reached its nadir by this article. If as someone has claimed above, the photos are cropped to only show these monks eating and leaving others out then CT owes us an explanation. That indicates strong bias from CT.
Any person, in fact even an animal, should be left alone to enjoy a meal. It is evident that CT is not fond of monks in general and these particular monk in particular. People come to a temple to seek refuge, to get advice from virtuous monks, and to seek something beyond. If they are not Sri Lankans who are conditioned to pay respect to the yellow robe, their confidence rests on what they notice in the behavior of monks. No matter how powerful Buddha’s teachings are, if its serenity is not reflected in the faces and behavior of those who claim to be Sangha, people tend to back off. I was told that this was in a temple in Indiana, and that the temple is run with difficulties. I can partly guess why the temple is in difficulty. Most likely, it has not managed to attract non-Sri Lankan supporters like other temples. Perhaps, the guardians of the temple may want to think about the priorities of the temple in order to attract devotees.

Harry, which world do you come from. These racist monks accused Muslim restaurants of spitting on food three times before serving to non-muslim customers, provoke public to attack mosques and churches, etc. and enjoying their free food from hard-working Buddhists, where these fat thugs (one of them killed couple of guys while drinking and driving!) enjoy whereas poor hard-working Buddhists are struggling to make a living!

This is very normal phenomena. Monks get their meal.This will be an issue only for abnormal psychosians. All who have at least seen a alms offering to monks in Sri lanka nothing to care about this. Those who worry on this is the enemies of Sri Lankan Buddhism. Those who enjoy this by commenting on this is non-Buddhists with hatred in their mind. Non of the Buddhists will find any speciality in this photo.

I think we are missing the point here. It is not a matter of how extravagant this meal is. Clearly this is a normal takeaway meal that one can get in any country including Sri Lanka. A proper “dane” given Sri Lanks, both at home and overseas are much more extravagant. People like Jay Chambers believe for “third world” people this is a scrumptious meal. No it is not, if you have seen an even an average “dana” in a Sri Lankan home you will be gobsmacked and please don’t compare India and Sri Lanka. Also, as some people have correctly commented here the monks are required to eat whatever that is put on their plates, although due to the sheer amount of food served at a “dana” some monks refrain eating from certain foods. Also eating meat is not forbidden contrary to commonly held belief, when the monks have the knowledge that the animals are not slaughtered specifically for the purpose of feeding them, which is more than likely to be the case with this meal.
What is objectionable though is the manner in which this meal is consumed. First of all as far as I know monks are not supposed to have lunch or dinner but just light breakfast and a one main meal consumed before noon. These meals are not supposed to be eaten for the enjoyment for taste, quality or company during the consumption, but just only to satisfy the hunger and maintain sustenance. Further they are supposed to sit on the floor with their legs crossed and consumed the meal served by the “dayakayo” rather than serve the meal for themselves. If anyone has tried this I am sure they must have realised this is the most uncomfortable position to consume a meal. The reason these “rules” is to bring into light the fact that for a monk eating is only for sustaining your body and not an as for indulgence and enjoyment.
Notwithstanding the time that this meal was served, all these important precepts have been broken here. The monks are clearly serving themselves and having a regular dinner or lunch party sitting comfortably at a table and having a good old chat over the meal. Those who see nothing wrong with this picture please tell me how this is different from a meal that anyone of us would have with our family and friends? Is this a good example of Buddhist monks who want to protect Buddhism from external forces behaving?
Although, I prefer not to comment on a person’s appearance I think some comments on their physiques are in order. Especially the main monk is so well fed that there is now way he (and others) limit their food intake just to a meagre meal once a day. No one can have a body like that following the strict precepts of pure Buddhism. These facts combined with his firebrand demeanour, preaching the need to “protect” Buddhism from some imaginary external forces imparts a great doubt of his character as an orthodox Buddhist monk. Those who follow these monks really need to wonder whether the Buddhism is truly under threat from external forces or from these monks themselves.

I said this is NOT a sumptuous meal!!
This is cheap, catered food. I empathize with the monks. They are hungry and they are eating with plastic utensils. If they were anywhere near where I live I would offer them a much better meal.

Now, I have to maintain that only in a Third World forum would this even be a subject for discussion. In America we never talk about ones salary, what one eats (except from a dieting standpoint), and respect privacy when taking a meal, answering a call of nature. Sadly I know that does not happen in India. I have not visited Sri Lanka and based on what I have learned from the venerable monks at the Fort Wayne temple I had a high overall regard. Some people in this forum are so anti-religious, and seem to have a vendetta against some monks, that now I have to think twice about that.

We usually do not “offer” meals to “pigs” whereas you seem to be so naïve as to mistake pigs for monks! Your knowledge about Buddhism, its rules, customs, principles, discipline is so miserable! A Buddhist monk’s taking meals is not like a layman taking his meals! You must first know about Buddhism before you write your silly nonsense about Buddhism!

It is not the point that we are against these Buddhist monka having a meal. We know all these Buffet juoints, fast food stores and special coupons always appear in Mail order catelogues and we love to see themt even enjoying better meal.
But the reason we are angry wih them is infact of spreading harmony, peace and love that Lord Buddha taught to his disciples, these Racist monks spread hatred,animosity,guilt, false Ideology and revenge towards other minority religions in Sri Lanka.
They not only threat other religions, but break and vandalise their Churches, Mosques etc, and also arouse general public to react violanty and spread hatred and violance on those minority religions worship places.
Please go to internet or google and youtube and check what those news sites tell.
I don’t know why they came to USA but we see them conducting some meditation classes while spreading hatered on other religions in Sri Lanka. That’s the difference.
Normally a Buddhist monk eats only two meals a day and are strictly vegetarians. But we do not see it among these Monks and we suspect that it may be the new rich dietary habits that makes them violant as there are no other outlets available to send the excess energy.
Also Lord Buddha never told his disciples not to eat Halal or Kosher food. What he preached was to eat any food that are offered to his disciples. But these racist Buddhist clergy instigate their followers not only not to go to a Muslim Hotel or restaurant or eat any Halal food at all, but even not to go to their grocery shops, Merchandise shops or any other Businesses. They have even thrown rotten egge to people who visited Muslim Fashion Bug and Nolimit stores. Please google and check.
What do you call this in USA. We know USA had had slavery in 1800’s and racism and segregation till 1960’s. But Martin Luther King Jr. fought for them and the Blacks got their liberation.
Could you call these Buddhist priests and ask them what this all about. It’s easy to contact them and clarify this if you call any Sri Lanka Buddhist temple in USA.

Reasonable dietery instructions rule out the consumption of certain animals’ flesh (like dogs’, snakes’, tigers’, bears’, hyenas’, humans). The Bhikkhu when he goes out to get alms-food does not beg but collects what is offered, since he is not allowed unless ill to ask for food, still he is much dependent upon whatever is put into his bowl. In this respect it is proper to remember that when Devadatta requested Lord Buddha for a ruling that Bhikkhus should abstain from flesh, and the Buddha did not agree to rule it, saying: “And the eating of flesh that is pure in three respects, that is to say, that the eater has not seen, heard, or suspected that it has been killed (specially for Bhikkhus) is allowable.” (Flesh and fish allowable must, however, be cooked as bhikkhus cannot eat any kind in raw or uncooked.) The discourse to Jivaka on the same subject and the oft-quoted Amagandha discourse, in which the evils of ill-conduct in so many ways are pointed out as much more harmful than the eating of meat.
Food & Beverages:
-A Bhikkhu cannot go to a restaurant or shop and buy or order -food A Bhikku personally cannot store food overnight.
-A Bhikkhu cannot cook for himself although he is allowed to microwave it.
-It is an offense for a Bhikkhu to eat or drink standing.
-He cannot therefore take food buffet-style, since eating is for him a serious matter, a meditation and not an occasion for delight or gossip.
-A Bhikkhu does not receive anything directly from the hands of a woman, but she may place whatever is to be offered upon the small receiving-cloth which a Bhikkhu carries.
-The meal having been consumed, a Bhikkhu chants briefly verses of well-wishing for the laity. It is actually an offense of wrong-doing for him not to do so if laypeople are present for it will be a mukastuti.
-As regards drinking, a Bhikkhu may not drink distilled or fermented intoxicants except minute quantities contained in necessary medicines.
-The Bhikkhu should be concerned not to eat between midday and dawn: it is an offense for him even to touch food — let alone eat it during this period.
-Before noon any other drink may be offered to him, with or without milk. After twelve o’clock noon it is not allowable for him to take milk (or any drink containing milk), cereals, eggs, etc., nor any kind of soup. He may be offered any fruit juice (uncooked but strained and free from the pulp of fruit), or any of the bottled soft drinks which are now common.
Abstain Indulgece:
-Sexual intercourse of any description.
-Taking what is not given with intention to steal.
-Depriving purposely a human being of life in any way.
-Falsely claiming superhuman states of attainment.
-Engaging in bodily contact with a woman with lustful intent.
-Addressing a woman with lewd words.
-Speaking to a woman in praise of sexual intercourse.
-Acting as a go-between for a man or a woman.

This herd of saffron mutts appear as though they are swallowing a meal with chicken just after a fashion bug type attack! OMG! Monks eating chicken! At that with spoons and forks too! Look like Sinhalese have coined their own Buddhism here! Yet I think something is missing with their saffron robe, a sword, galkatas or a T56! What about a few females too to dispel their loneliness and also to vent their excess Aphrodisiacs drives after a sumptuous meal!
