“If You Think Journos Are Pigs Who Eat Shit Why Are You Here To Eat Shit With Us Pigs?, Ivan Slams Gota

By Colombo Telegraph

Last Thursday five editors, Sinha Ratnatunge -Sunday Times, Prabath Sahabandu – The Island, Siri ranasinghe – Lankadeepa, Champika Liyanarachchi – Daily Mirror and Victor Ivan – Former Editor Ravaya were invited for a “confidential” dinner with the President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Only the President, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Lalith Weeratunge were present.

Victor Ivan

They arrived first 45 minutes nothing of any significance was discussed. Victor Ivan then told the President instead of talking only the good of this government shall we now focus on the bad. He then asked Gotabhaya if you think journalists are pigs who eat shit why are you here to eat shit with us pigs? To which Gotabhaya replied “I did not mean you all when I said that I only said that to Frederica.

Victor asked; what is this??? You have threatened to sue her and the newspaper? If I were frederica I would sue you. Gotabhaya sat “red-faced” looked “very upset” hardly said a word.  Did not at any stage deny using foul language not even having used the F letter word. The President did not utter one word. Later, over dinner he was overhead telling Daily Mirror editor, Champika, “the language used was too much”

But, giving an interview to Lakbima News editor Rajpal Abeynayake , Goatabhaya said; Nothing I said was with any direct reference to her. I did not say so and so, Ms. so and so — I am doing this to you, or going to do this to you, or whatever…  I said nothing directly to the editor who called me. Whatever I said, I didn’t say ‘I am going to do this and this to you’  or anything like that! So you can see they are exaggerating and the reader, without knowing any of this background, gets an entirely different picture.

When asked, But did you use foul language on the lady? Gota replied; I did not do so. I used words such as ‘bloody’ or whatever, not to refer to her but to refer to the incident. I never used foul language on her – but I used certain words in the context that she provoked me unreasonably, in referring to the incident, as I have pointed out above. I mean these are words that are used very commonly in America (USA) for instance, in normal usage. In fact a very high ranking officer of the American government (name withheld by this writer) met me and said about the TV programme Hard Talk and the person who does Hard Talk on BBC: ‘You know we are in the same boat… being questioned by that a_shole.’ This person was referring to Stephen Sakur who does the BBC programme Hard Talk. So this is very common usage, in USA for instance, and they use these words in normal talk — but these people are trying to make a big issue out of it to get at me, because they hate me about the war. In any case I used certain words with reference to the incident; I did not use foul language to abuse her. ( Read the interview here)

Speaking to The Nation, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa described the story that led to the exchange between the two as ‘a non-issue’.He admitted that he did swear during the exchange but claimed he was not directly using those words at Jansz. “I was using the words in general terms, on people who betray the country. However, I let my emotions get the better of me and I regret that,” he said. (Read the story here )

It was only the Sunday Island reported the above reported “confidential” dinner, but with a spin with a wrong date.  The Sunday Island political columnist CA Chandraprema wrote; On Friday night, newspaper editors Victor Ivan, Prabath Sahabandu, Siri Ranasinghe and Sinha Ratnatunga were invited to dinner at Temple Trees. The sudden meeting, outside the regular meetings that the president had with newspaper editors was a fire fighting exercise to deal with the fallout from the blackguarding that defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had given Sunday Leader Editor Frederica Jansz. Jansz had published a transcript of the conversation that had taken place between her and the defence secretary last Sunday and that made quite a sensation. The defence secretary’s outbursts are well known, but what was new was his reference to ordure and the use of the f-word. He has never been known to use such words.  Be that as it may, the defence secretary too had been present at the dinner given by the president on Friday, and his version of the story is that the Sunday Leader had not published all that he said and that the published conversation had only excerpts of the full conversation. Like everybody else Gotabhaya Rajapaksa too should have the right of reply. ( read the Sunday Island political column here )

Colombo Telegraph contacted three close confidents of the three editors who participated the “confidential dinner” and all of them are confirmed that Victor did confront with Gotabhaya and but Gotabhaya never gave his side of the story or deny Sunday Leader editor’s description of the story as Sunday Island political columnist says.

Gota Rajapaksa’s death threats to journalists should be taken seriously …

Many journalists have killed by Rajapaksa Regime.

Cota’s attitude of ‘you will get killed’ is also terrifying, especially from one who’s supposed to ensure our security.

Thanks Victor for standing up for freedom of speech !!

Rajapaksa Regime is killing Freedom of Speech..

      Drop by drop…

Drop by drop the ocean grows.

Rights and liberties are slowly eroded but unless one takes a step back and looks its is difficult to see how far the drift has been. Taking a step back becomes a lot more difficult when all much of what passes for news is propaganda in Sri Lanka.

Asking Rajapaksa Regime uncomfortable questions become a crime punishable by death !!!

Victor’s articulation is akin to ‘Uragey mus, Urageyma thiyala kapanawa’. A direct translation is ‘Pig’s flesh being cut on a Pig itself’. I can not understand why all the Journalists do not boycot MR regime totally, without wining and dining like this, till Gota apologises and steps down from his post.

What are you talking about, Gamini? Even after losing her husband to one of the worst death of a politician committed by another politician in the broad day light, Bharatha’s wife is working for the Kurakkan Boys. Her daughter, who madea lot of nise, is chit-chatting with the Kurakkan Prince and intends to join the party as well. What hope do the poor journalists have???

The media united will never be defeated! It is now time for the Media to unite to tell people the truth about the crude, rapacious, greedy nepotisitc war criminals who run Lanka at this time and are a CURSE on the country.
Journalists should unite to support Fredrika and help Lanka get rid of Gotabaya the White Van goon and the rest of the rajapassa family that his goons protect.

Rohan, let us not be disheartened. We the majority in this society who are passive observers has to get our act together. Just look at this blog CT itself. Earlier this blog was dominated by the MR apologists as Max Silvas, David Blackers who did not allow dissenting opinion expressed as they ridiculed any who tried. As a result they monopolised this blog CT. What is the situation now, little by little we have succeeded in driving them out. Here I am reminded of a saying by Napoleon. ‘The world suffers a lot, not because of the violence of the bad people, but because of the silence of the good people’. So if the silent majority come out, these Humbugs can be driven out.

What BS. Victor Ivan is a Rajapaksa lackey; he may have talked a little tough in the private but he would have come out the usual Laundry Man, had the other laundry men not jumped the gun and spilled the beans.

It goes to show how lacking we are of brave wo/men when someone who burps loud will be cheered as a “brave man”.

Good stuff Mr. Ivan Keep it up! The other journalists who were with you should have supported you at the time and asked him to resign.
We all need to remember that Gota who thinks he is so powerful has not got a basic degree, just an IT certificate. He would be unemployed and unemployable in California given the recession there, and he is getting a free lunch on tax payers money in Lanka since he is mr’s brother. That is the sole reason he has the job since his foul behavior and language would have necessitate resignation anywhere in the world except in the Banana Republic that Lanka is after Rajapakse. Gota still must go – that is the main point and all need to work together to ensure this – also, since Gota the white van goon who is militarizing post-war Lanka is the SINGLE biggest obstacle to peace and restoring minority rights at this time.

Who are these ‘editors’ – why is it that only Victor confronted this pig Gota?

I do not paticularly like Jansz or approve of her method of journalism but personal likings are beside the point. The media is getting a bad name for their silence in this and other issues.

      Pandukabaya De Silva,

why cant you guys as senior lawyers stand up and do the best against deterioration of the law and order. Is it not the high time to do so ? Almost everyone is clear that there is no fair law enforcement in the country today. When governing politicians fail to adhere the laws, law professionals should be able to work collectively to safeguard the security of the nation.

        0

@Sirimala, I am not a senior lawyer at all. Just a junior – or a best, a mid level one – sick of the Colombo lawyering and doing my little best in my homw town of Weligama but I enjoy more puttering around in my organic vegetable plantation and entertaining people from outside.

The thing with law professionals is that they are not all that bothered about the state of affairs as long as they can earn their money. There are a few brave souls like Kishali Pinto Jayawardena who, week after week, write their hearts out, I admit, but this is rare. The rest are either highly politicised and not bothered. That is the sad truth. Individual action is possible but not collective action among Sri Lankan lawyers!

Thanks for your comments. I know it is not easy to work colelctively. But the few you say who are the true souls can give a lead to demos. If not today when ?

Sirimala, I agree absolutely with you. I believe we all talk and do nothing, as there is no group to give leadership. Everyone blames RW for not taking action. How can he alone bring change when Elections are violated with absolute impunity. People are killed in broad day light in the high security zones. Convicts of murder and financial embezzlers are acquitted and reinstated in office. People who dissent are white vaned and their bodies are never found and they have the impunity to say only God knows whether they are living or dead. There is no semblance of Law and Order. WHY, WHY cannot the Lawyers, Doctors, Accountants and Engineers, the Proffessionals, all get out and say enough is enough. Can these Humbugs then lock up all. NO! They can not. I believe it is time the Proffessional Body of this society, should meet RW and decide to come out and the masses will definitely rally round to hound these criminals and rogues out and create a system of governance with the Best and the Honest. If RW fails to rectify the situation with help extended, then we can decide on an alternate Leader. Let us first make a start without being only armchair critics and being selfish expecting the masses to bring the change. Time is running out and fast.

          Yes, u are absolutely right…

          Quoting from yours:

WHY, WHY cannot the Lawyers, Doctors, Accountants and Engineers, the Proffessionals, all get out and say enough is enough.

Gamini, I appreicate the manner you analyse many issues compared very often but with facts. People like me who left the country decades ago cant know the mere truth any issues being out of the country. I am not well aware of many occurings in SL for the last two decades, except that I always informed myself by being alert to online news from various sources.

Quite agree with you the fact that we dont have any other better option than strenghthering the hand of RW, if the masses at all want a change. Criticims that goes below the belt cant help anyone of us. Twenty year ago, RW was not matured enoguh to solve the problems as then education minister.

If brave lawyers even if there are not many can give lead powerful demos together with other higly educated professionals, rulers will have no other choice than trying to implement what paragraphs say.No doubt any right thinking profesisonal will follow this. So then this can be eyeopeners to the blind masses who remain indifferent today.

Why I believe lawyers to take the lead is because they are the oneS who interpret the paragraphs and are well versed with them.

        • 0
          0

to add to the last comment:

RW was not matured to lanken politics two decades ago, but today I personally believe he is the only leader who could face any challenges but with a strong support of the people. As you once added – the story about a businessman who came to him recently with a donation, later joined the party reformists – gives me the impresison that RW must change his attitudes atleast partly focusing on the need of the hour. Just not reacting to the current problems promptly and adequately if RW would stay as has been, the situation could gradually become to worst levels, comparably to the former states of Lybia/Egypt.

They were NOT revolutionory democtraic,BUT OUT RIGHT ANACHIST CUM TERRORIST.They were born anti-working classes movement and anti-national democratic forces until its defeted by MR govenmnet 2009 May.
What ever the said and done under the leadership MR totally defeted ARMED OR GUN POINT POLITICS IN ISLAND IN SUPPORT OF GR OF Ministry of Defeance.Back to democrtaic frame work after 45 long years of tiny islnad post modern policial history. That credit should give to MR and GR.
Victor Ivon of ex-terrorist hardline of JVP ,critrizing GR is insult to History of people of Sri Lankan. Don’t used bad persons to attack, one or two weaknees of good persnos certain misbehivour.
Gotabaya Rajapakasa, the man who contrdibuted to protected our national SOVERGINITY AND DEMOCRTATIC; But Victor Ivon had record of undermine of democrtaic RIGHTS OF PEOPLE OF SRI LANKA.Look at fundamantal differance of not their words, but their dees.

Real Americans never behave like this.
This is the way Sri Lankan people behave once they have the power.
We have seen this type of characters in every regimes in past.
During the JR regime JR and R Premadasa behave like this.
During Premadasa Regime Premadasa, Ranjan Wijerathne, AJ Ranasinghe and Paskaralingam behave like this.
During Chandrika’s Regime CBK ,Mangala Samaraweera, SB, Mervin ,Sanath Gunathilaka behave like this.
Now Mahinda’s turn, Gota and Mervin openly behave like this and Mahinda handle them from behind the screen.
If Ranil come to power tomorrow we can see a similar character with different name.
This behavior is not only pertaining to Sinhala Buddhist.
Tamil Thondaman, Tamil Karuna Amman, Tamil Douglus Devananda, Muslim Hakeem behave the same manner when they have money and power.

    • 0
      0

This is exactly why people are not interested that a change can happen under a different party but with the same characters.Srilanka needs a full overhaul. One can very safely say that Ranil is not a strong man to
initiate a strong opposition against any govts.UNP doesn’t believe in him. Also one is not wrong to take him for a puppet of the govt,I guess.
The moment he tries to be smart,Batalanda will come to haunt him and he knows it.So, the country can not any longer put up with a party like UNP which fails its duty to save them courageously.

I want to ask the defence secretary one question, sir, do we have to use this language because it is use in USA very often? Well Sir, do we get the sneezes when USA got the cold? I think we have to understand that our culture is very much different, what we should do is to take the right things from western countries and leave the bad aside. But the problem in Sri Lanka is we accept the bad too fast and leave the right aside.

It is ok to go for a hard talk in a private dinner. Still are they not pigs when they eat and after coming back boasting and reporting their private dialogue insulting and embaressig the invitee? If I am not mistaken it is only a dinner not a media breafing. Hope this will publish.

Let us not stone Gota to death like we are the purest soles of the world, Having had bad experiences with the press, It is possible sometimes people to loose it with press. After all Gota is a human too.

But what is interesting to see is how he react after returning to his sane mind. As an officer and a gentleman, he should apologize for using foul language to a woman. we still did not hear that, Al we hear is lame excuses. Regret is not synonymous with apology, After all he is perceived as farther to the nation and people look up to him as a role model who achieved greatness from humble beginnings.

Also Frederica you should publish the whole conversation for us to see rather than excerpts so people can really judge it as a whole.
