Warning – Disturbing Images: The Last Hours Of The Son Of Prabhakaran

New photographs have emerged which raise fresh questions about the conduct of Sri Lanka’s armed forces during the final stages of the operation against Tamil rebels and have led to claims the 12-year-old son of the militants’ leader may have been summarily executed.

A series of photographs taken a few hours apart and on the same camera, show Balachandran Prabhakaran, son of Villupillai Prabhakaran, head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). One of them shows the boy sitting in a bunker, alive and unharmed, apparently in the custody of Sri Lankan troops. Another, a few hours later, shows the boy’s body lying on the ground, his chest pierced by bullets.

The images were taken in May 2009 at the very end of the Sri Lankan government’s operation to crush the LTTE, which had launched a bloody, decades-long insurgency against the state that led to the deaths of perhaps 70,000 people. The authorities always said Prabhakaran’s son was killed in cross-fire, as troops moved in to take the LTTE’s last stronghold, located on a scrap of coastline near Mullaitivu in the north-east of the country.

But the images, contained in a new documentary, No Fire Zone, which will be screened at the Geneva Human Rights Film Festival during the UN Human Rights Council meeting in March, suggest the boy was captured alive and killed at a later stage.

A forensic pathologist who examined the later images for the film-makers, said the boy was shot five times in the chest. Furthermore, propellant burns around the wound suggest he was shot at very close range.

“The new photographs are enormously important evidentially because they appear to rule out any suggestion that Balachandran was killed in cross-fire or during a battle. They show he was held, and even given a snack, before being taken and executed in cold blood,” claimed the film’s director, Callum Macrae.

“It is difficult to imagine the psychology of an army in which the calculated execution of a child can be allowed with apparent impunity. That these events were also photographed and kept as war trophies by the perpetrators is even more disturbing.” The 12-year-old’s father, Prabhakaran, was killed along with most of the senior leadership of the LTTE as Sri Lanka’s army advanced on the rebels’ position. There were reports at the time that several LTTE officials were shot and killed as they tried to surrender.

Prabhakaran’s body was displayed on state television, part of the front of his skull missing, also suggesting he may have been shot at close range. The Sri Lankan authorities have always denied shooting anyone who was trying to surrender. Last night, Brigadier PR Wanigasooriya, an army spokesman, said Sri Lanka had been a repeated victim of  “lies, half truths, rumours, and numerous forms of speculations”.

“No substantive evidence have been presented for us to launch an investigation,” he added, referring to alleged human rights abuses.

Sri Lanka has always insisted it did what it could to ensure no civilians were killed during its operation against the LTTE. Yet a team appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon found that up to 40,000 civilians may have been killed. The team said there were credible allegations both sides committed war crimes.

The photographs will place additional pressure on David Cameron to announce whether or not he will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting (CHOGM), e in Sri Lanka in November. A Downing Street official with Mr Cameron on his visit to India said on Monday that no decision had yet been taken.

NGOs and organisations, among them the cross-party Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, have called on him to boycott the meeting.

Interesting photographs. The manner in which this boy may have died bothers me. The innocence and the tinge of worry seen on the face of this boy moments before his death, are unforgettable. There are many stories circulating, including the one that this boy had pointed out where his father was hiding, just before his death. Finally, in a photograph circulated last year , the bullet ridden body of this boy was shown circled by the bodies of dead and bleeding LTTE cadres. In the present photographs I see boot and slipper clad persons standing and the shadow of a person with an uncovered head over the belly and right arm.

i dont, not for a second condone the killing of a 12 year old child, summarily or otherwise, however, I have many questions about this picture which was apparently taken “minutes before” the kid was “executed”.
Firstly, as Indi quite rightly put it, “He’s just a child eating a snack”. But, my questions is, the kid seems quite relaxed. Quite at ease and not bothered with what is around him. He doesnt look scared neither does he seem to be crying. Taking all this into consideration, i think it is highly doubted that this picture was taken “moments before his death”.
Secondly, just the mere fact that he is wearing the same pair of shorts while he was having his snack and when he was executed does not, and cannot mean it to automatically be that this picture was taken “moments before his death”. I wear the same pair of shorts so very often on very different days.
Also, the picture of the Bunker does not look as if there has been much “activity”. I doubt that any bunker would be this well kept especially at the latter stage of the War when the Government was wacking away in the No fire Zone.
In all things considered, i highly doubt that this picture was taken just “moments before his death”. It just doesnt seem so but good enough to get the International community worked up!

You seriously think that the boy in the picture looks ‘relaxed’? It seems quite obvious that he was given ‘the impression’ along with the snack that he would come to know harm. And yet his wide eyes suggest anxiety in the 1st picture and he seems to be in serious thought in the 2nd.
‘Campaigning group Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka says analysis of the photographs’ metadata shows they were taken by the same camera at 10:14 and 12:01 on 19 May 2009 – on the final day of Sri Lankan forces’ bitter 26-year war against the Tigers. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-21509656)’.
Most of us I believe are broken by the sight of these images of a child and the evidence of vicious inhumane actions by a military that was supposed to be representing us – the nation of Sri Lanka.
Most of us are concerned about the way it all panned out because we know that nothing can stop that being repeated again… and again… but at the end of the day, all of this will amount to nothing, will be denied by the bigwigthugs and with the stand they have taken the military is empowered to act knowing that they have noone to answer to.

@Dav.. Mass graves in Matale.. and yet you and the world are only concerned about the War, i mean justice for only the LTTE side of the war.. You just have to look ate the amount of comments here compared to the mere 6 on that.. the agenda is clearly set.. There will never be justice becuase you and people like you never seek justice for the many sinhala, muslim, non LTTE tamils, and bughers of this Land.

You dare assume with a typical Sri Lankan masses mentality, that any heart for the ruins of the war is ltte related.
              How pathetic.
You ought to be ashamed of your narrow outlook which is the cause for the easy dismissal by the powered ones as they know that fools in our land will not pursue these ‘petty’ things which DO include all crime against our people as a nation.
Your description (how foolish) dear, is completely inaccurate. Rather than waste your days trying to tarnish what others are (with what seems like the vengence of one accused – are you?), try and use what little remains upstairs to (try &) fathom how the article you are commenting about (if read at all???) relates to the comments people have made.
Make room for some positive influence instead of standing stubbornly in such an obvious way with the many who do not care a damn about a long term peaceful resolution for the nation as a whole.

            My dear Dav boy.

let me tell you.. if my dad and family were captured/killed I would be just sitting there looking like that. He may not be as relaxed as you when your on a hamock near the beach, but he certainly doesnt look as if he is scared or worried.
i’m not too sure whether you own a camera, but, it is pretty obvious that you can change and/or put any “date” you would like on a camera prior to taking a picture. so that is not definitive at all. And what makes you sure that the fellow was captured and/or killed on the 19th? get a grip of yourself.
collateral in not something that only happens/happened in Sri Lanka. Its part and parcel of War and a armed conflict. I like you to name one war that was fought without collateral. I’m not for a moment saying that i condone it. What I am saying is that it is an eventuality.
When USA killed OSAMA, they made a decision to shoot on sight, prior to even going in cause they thought that everyone there slept with Explosives wrapped around their body. what an absurd justification!!!

The quote was a press release.
I strongly believe that we have to be open to the evidence that is presented. What a sad state of suffering of our people (those who have sadly perished and those of us who sadly choose to IGNORE the obvious).

@DAV.. how simplistic is your approach to follow the Ch4 and Hr narrative.. I do not Blame the LTTE alone. Yet people like you and CH4 accuse GOSL..That outdated Narrative..’HOW CAN YOU COMPARE A TERRORIST GROUP, WITH A ELECTED GOVERNMENT) the simple fact is this.. It WAS THE SAID WESTERN GOVERNMENTS AND HR GROUPS THAT FORCED SUCCESSIVE ELECTED GOVERNMENTS TO SIT AND TALK WITH TERRORIST’ FOR the sake of peace, and yes that was the price of Peace we had to pay as a nation.. JUSTICE then went out of the windows as Captain Prabhakaran along with Akila and Aman were wanted Criminals by India (Proclaimed Offenders)…and Also by Lankan High court for countless Suicide Bombings and Murder of Leading Tamilean Politicians… NOW young man HOW MANY WESTERN GOVERNMENTS SAT AND TALKED WITH OSAMA BINLADEN AND AL QAEDA of PEACE?????????..AND WHAT ABOUT the TAMIL NADU POLITICIANS and EElam GROUPS IN THE WEST WHO SHOULD BE IN THE DOCK FOR SUPPORTING A TERRORIST GROUP if u follow the Ch4 Narrative???? SO WHER IS THE COLLECTIVE JUSTICE????? IT WAS NOT JUST ONESIDED AND simplistic AS YOU AND MANY HAVE PUT IT…JUSTICE MEANS MANY PROSECUTIONS FROM WESTERN EELAM GROUPS, TAMIL NADU TOP POLITICIANS, SOME NGO GROUPS AND LANKANS.. THAT IS TRUE JUSTICE.

trying to compare the US’s war against terror with our own civil war can only be done by a mind inherently incapable of any basic thought. Negotiating with OBL was never an option- the LTTE weren’t fighting for some vague, all-encompassing purpose like OBL- they were fighting for political and territorial power.

after persecuting the tamils much like we’ve now suddenly begun doing to the muslim community, we created a war that never should have been started in the first place. blaming other people for telling us we should repent is an exquisite example of the utter stupidity and inability to accept the shortcomings of “our side” that has plagued both the tamils and the sinhalese: most especially the sinhalese. There is a limit to which we can blame the white man, ms. kumarasinghe.

There are photos of Bikku Kids hacked with machetes.. No Great revelationas such by these CMB gurdian, ch4 etc etc etc… The little is devil is dead so what.. This is a Brutal war which ended and now no more deaths.. These fools think the we in sri lanka will be moved by these.. We lived in this nation for thirty long brutal years seeing dead kids and more.. we may hate the Government. But every Lankan will stand with our military because Every Lankan no matter race, creed, Genda fought this war and witnessed it.. It will take more than a dead boy of a terrorist to get to the Lankan People.

Like i said we and most dont like the Government, and when we see former members of the LTTE once heroes who led the Kittu, charles anthony brigades and bled this nation in the late 90’s and now in GOSL, we hate it.. But that is the price of peace. Mr Prabhakaran held socalled peace talks with GOSL after 91, even though he was a proclaimed offender and a wanted criminal by India, That is the price of peace. So i say again and again one dead boy, compared to thousands of photos people giving kids cyanide capsules and then sending them to get shot.. there are photos of dead kids in trains, Buses, with their tiny bodies torn to pieces and with ball bearings embedded.. There are photos of Bikku Kids hacked with machetes. We all in this nation no matter what creed or genda got used to the killing.. we all had to realise that we had to put away justice for the sake of peace..hence the talks with a proclaimed offender wanted by india.. We may hate GOSL but we will never compromise the end of death now.. Every Lankan in this nation fought this Brutal war and we all GAve our support to end it by any means

You have forgotten the so called communal riots of 58 73 82 … so on. One Tamil university student was burnt alive in front of his house. One Hindu priest was immersed in a molten Tar barrel. Thousands of women were raped, properties and libraries burnt. The unique feature in this country is its sadistic nature. They celebrate killing dancing around the corpse singing the national anthem. Those photos too are available but you become photo blind for those photos. Did the system punish a single criminal? The perpetrators are not proclaimed criminals of India or Sri Lanka. They are a race proclaimed as thugs rapist and murderers. Do you want any body to proclaim this nation as criminals. Look, crime is a crime. If you do a crime you do the time. No one should be spared Tamil Sinhalese Germans or anybody. But civilized nations have system to deliver justice to the victims and to see these crimes don’t happen again. They do not deny the crime however horrible it may be. See the white van abductions, raping of tourist, slaughtering journalist, destroying temple, we can go on and on. You name any crime you find it in this country. According to your argument we should forgive Sadam Hussains Gadhfi Pol Pot Idi Amin and Hitler in the name of peace. This is called Lanka talk. The world has moved on. It has no time or space to take your argument seriously. Next time you get a speed fine tell the policeman “Please officer leave me along in the name of peace.” By trying to cover up these crimes you not only tarnish the name of the country you are encouraging another generation of criminals to roam the streets. Very soon this country will be characterized as a nation of crime. Are you happy about that. This is not liking or not liking a particular government. It is a simple civilized behavior to call a crime a crime and to enforce justice. there is no substitute for justice , even peace.. How long are you going to hide behind LTTE. It is SLTE which has to be dealt with now. LTTE is gone as far as the Tamils are concerned but for the Sinhalese it is still alive and provide a license and cover to commit crime

@Lankan Liar.. Your are true to you name..And i quote you ‘. One Hindu priest was immersed in a molten Tar barrel.’ This was the same lies Mr Prabhakaran repeated to Anita Patrap. The Tar barrel story.. But the truth can be found in emergency 58 by tarzie vittachi.. Which states it was a SINHALA BABY that was tossed into a Tar barrel in Trinco, and yes despicable sinhala mobs killed a hindu prest in panadura, like wise despicable tamil mobs killed and destroyed Nainatheevu (Buddhist Temple).. Sir you dont know your facts..

This is good evidence for a war crimes trial.. sooner or later…

Mahinda Rajapakse and Gota the White van goon will militarize Lanka and turn it into a dictatorship in order to cling to power forever because if he loses power an international war crimes trial awaits this murderous regime..
To dislodge the murderous Rajapassa Brothers, with Ranil Wickramasinhe supporting them tacitly, it will take another war – Syria style Arab spring style, another blood bath.. Unless India’s RAW and IB with CIA step in and finishes him off swiftly..
Impeaching the CJ was just another step to ensure his unhindered dictatorship!

In the genocidal war conducted ‘without witnesses’, the perpetrators have turned into the witness leaking evidence one by one. I am sure there will be much more evidences (images and video) before the next UN meeting, one year from now. One of the key steps to take towards reconciliation is to have an independent investigation into what both the LTTE and the Sri Lankan military did during the last few years of the war. Otherwise, these kind of leaking evidences will continue to haunt the SL government and many open wounds will stay remain open and will not heal. Thousands of people, both Tamils and Sinhalese, who were affected by the war, want answers. Who killed their loved ones? Are they really dead? Or, are they still alive in a secret prison somewhere? Families need closure.

Mahinda Rajapakse has won the battle in the armed conflict phase of the Sinhala-Tamil ethnic conflict but he is getting ever close to losing the war. All he had to do was to fully implement the LLRC. But, for reasons best known to him, he chose not to. Instead, he brought down the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, expanded the Jumbo Cabinet into Mega Cabinet and tried to reduce even the limited powers the current provincial councils enjoy by having economic development projects implemented directly at district level unit of the government.

Mahinda could try to protect his brother, Gothabaya Rajapakse and his then frontline commanders who carried out orders to execute prisoners of war. Or, he could distance himself from the soon-to-be prosecuted Defense Secretary and Army Generals who carried out war crimes under his orders. But, Mahinda is way deep in the muck now with the powerful states in the world who gave all the help his brother needed to prosecute the war and destroy all key assets (especially its supply ships) of the LTTE. In return, these powers expected Mahinda to follow through on measures on political reforms, ethnic reconciliation, and for accountability for the crimes committed by both sides to the war (brining to closure, the thousands of unanswered questions parents have on the whereabouts of their sons and daughters who disappeared after taken into custody by the Sri Lankan military, extrajudicial executions and massacres at the hands of Sri Lanka Army and STF and assassinations, massacres and civilian bombings carried out by the LTTE). But, nothing of that sort happened since May 2009. Instead, Sri Lanka’s judiciary and police focused only on what the LTTE did during the war.

For all those who have posted comments possibly the longest thread with 236 and those who have tried to justify the murder of this boy citing various stories and those who try to exonerate the Forces without an International Inquiry, what if the siblings of Rohana Wijeyweera were dealt in similar fashion? WHY were they spared? Is it because that Rohana Wijeyweera was a Sinhalese? Or we had better quality Army personnel like Janaka Perera? The Brutes like Shavendra Silva after having committed this type of heinous crimes are today provided sanctuary by the very Guardians of Human Rights as Diplomats in the West. The Tamil diaspora and all peace loving citizens should assist the voices in the West who are trying to have an International Inquiry Opened, not only to expose the War Crime Murderers here but the Western Governments who have been having their business interests over Human Rights Violations in this country, assisting the MR govt and doing business of providing arms sales. What Hypocrites?

This is the problem when you see too many Indian movies with tomato ketchup!
When shot at such close range where the surrounding skin is scorched blood does not spurt out through a burnt wound.
Get a picture of the exit wound at the back.

        Mahen,

Which means he is not lying where he was shot. The body had been moved several times, for the photograph of last year, where there were blood patches under the bodies of the LTTE cadres that were in a circle around the dead boy; and the present photograph where there are no signs of blood either below or in the circle around the body. Where is the original photograph with blood seeping from the exit wounds, soaking the solo below around. This raises the question why the body was moved so many times in the midst of an intense battle?

I am yet however hoping that the boy and his mother are alive somewhere. what Mohamed Aswer said in Parliament some time back and claimed was a mistake, keep my hopes yet alive.

        Dr.Rajasingham Narendran.

Huh, Baba. So, Balachandran is still alive? If he is dead, then how did he die from the first two pictures to the third? Oh, by the way, don’t come up with the nonsense (even Michael Roberts did this!) that there was man with a rubber slipper, then it can’t be a Sri Lankan military man. Prabaharan and the Diaspora knew Balachandran would be captured and made to disapper. So, before he left the Nanthikadal area, the rubber slipper brigade (sic) LTTE took these pictures and let the young man walk to his fate. An invitation to Gota: If you believe what your soldiers did the right thing, why don’t you come out and say, “He is a son of the terrorist leader and he deserved this”? By the way, Sri Lanka follows the teaching of Buddha!

      0

According to Blockhead, no one is guilty unless they confess and the confession is validated by 101 others (usually the accomplices of the guilty party, but never the victim). Using this *brilliant* logic, the Sri Lankan Army never shelled the NFZ’s, there are no mass graves in the North of the island, Gothabaya is the next Mother Theresa, etc.

    • 0
      0

Perhaps you can consult with the tooth fairy and explain to us how those photographs prove he was in Army custody, given that we cannot identify anyone in those pictures as being SL servicemen.

I hate to bust this bubble, but like the infamous execution clip aired on CH4, these pix shed no light on the circumstances of the boy’s death.

        Mr [Edited out] Blacker

Here’s some simple logic, let me explain to you like to a child.

        1. VP’s son is dead wearing a pair of shorts.
        2. The Sri Lanka Army said he was found dead.
        3. Someone photographed him alive wearing the same pair of shorts.
        4. So the LTTE photographed him alive and dead wearing the same pair of shorts????

I don’t think you still understand, neither does the rice eating buffaloes of this country. Keep on bum sucking!!

        • 0
          0

I hope you’re only joking when you call yourself a lawyer, because if this is the way you argue a case, I pity your clients.

“4. So the LTTE photographed him alive and dead wearing the same pair of shorts????”

Firstly, I never said the LTTE photographed him. Secondly, why do you find point 4 so incredulous? Thirdly, how does any of this prove the Army killed him when 1. we don’t even know if this is VP’s son 2. we don’t know if he was ever in Army custody?

Now, can you explain to me like an adult and a lawyer and not like a child? If I wanted to talk to a child, I would. Thanks.

Who else was there in the War Theatre other than the LTTE and the Govt. Forces. The photo where the boy is alive cannot be by the LTTE for the child to be killed afterwards. It is obvious that he was in the custody of the Forces, unless the LTTE gave the photos to the govt. Forces according to David Blacker’s Logic or a third party did it to embarass Block Heads. If the Govt. Forces did not do it, who else could have done it? The LTTE????

We don’t know if the third pic of the dead boy is at the same place or time as the first two pix, or even from the same camera. I have not given any alternate theories, so please don’t attribute your ridiculous notions to me. I am only questioning the lack of evidence to substantiate the theory in the above article. David for your information all photos are from the same camera. ‘A series of photographs taken a few hours apart and on the same camera, show Balachandran Prabhakaran’. What more have you to say? The paralel I drew was not to question your paternity, but to elaborate the kind of evidence you are looking for to evade responsibility of the Sri Lanka govt. Forces of having committed War Crimes. This and the five students in Trincomalee and the 17 Aid workers, there is enough evidence if an International probe is conducted as a Local Inquiry will never allow the truth to come out.

Ex army Blacker is trying hard to defend his paymasters. It can be easily proved Blacker as some of your mates who were in the field are now in the West after having secured political asylum. They will testify and in fact already they have given affidavits.

Do you have any evidence to prove that your mother gave birth to you? do you know your father? i think you know only when your mother told who is your father? do you know whether your mother told lie or not? probably your dad is still thinking you are his son/daughter. but still he doesn’t know the truth. even don’t know you are a adopted baby when your actual parents threw in the road side bin. Lol

              raises very important points:

“probably your dad is still thinking you are his son/daughter.”

My father is 100% confident that he is my biological father. He says that my mother wore a chastity belt for over many months before and after conception. That is the caste iron proof.

The elders in my community tell me that they are aware of new field of science which has some thing to do with DNA. According to my elders DNA can confirm paternity as well as maternity.

              Is it true?

The British Channel 4 television said that the photos, which had been taken before and after the brutal slaying of the boy, stemmed from the same camera within a period of two hours. Apart from the documentary evidence released now by the Channel 4, a high ranking SL military commander, who escaped to West two years ago, had revealed already in the past that Balachandran was captured with five LTTE members and that he was killed together with them after being questioned on the whereabouts of LTTE leader.

As I said before, McRae’s word that the pix are from the same camera and timeframe isn’t good enough. He has lied before on Ch4’s “evidence”. Ask yourself why the metadata which would indicate time, date, and camera hasn’t been released. Ask yourself why metadata on previous “evidence” has yet to be released.

          Dear Mr.Blocker/Blockhead,

“There are none so blind as those who will not see.” The most deluded people are those who choose to ignore what they already know.
President Rajapaksa said that the army went into war with the UN Charter in one hand and a gun in the other…what he did not mention was that some of them also had camera phones in their pockets as well. It’s hilarious to see you still trying to whitewash the armed forces and the government even after all this evidence that has come out. I guess some people love putting their foot in their mouths and getting egg on their faces.

          • 0
            0

For David Blacker type they want a photo where the Army shooting the boy, to admit that it is the work of the Forces. The fact that there is a picture of him alive and the next he is killed, who else could have done this, other than the Govt. Forces as there were no third parties at the front. Is David Blacker trying to imply that the LTTE killed this boy? Come on David, why do you call your father as your biologiacl father, is it because you saw him do your mother up?

            • 0
              0

Firstly, my paternity is of no concern to you, unless of course you have doubts about your own patronage. If paternity was a crime we would look for solid evidence of it, as in the case of paternity being contested in court. At other times it is something we accept on trust. If you cannot understand the difference between the two, you should perhaps check your own genealogy for for signs of retardation.

Secondly, saying who else could have done it is a childish and unintelligent argument. You need to prove your case, not say who else could have done it. When your parents left you Christmas presents, and told you who else but Santa could have left it, i’m sure you believed them. But now it’s time to grow up.

          • 0
            0

I am not trying to whitewash anyone. I am asking you to provide conclusive evidence. Why are you getting so worked up? Instead of calling me names, why don’t you prove what you’re claiming. Or is that too difficult for you?

        • 0
          0

          Dear David Blacker,

Of course this photograph itself may not prove anything; but don’t you want to find out precisely what happened?

Would you not react differently depending on which of the following three scenarios is actually true:
          (a) the kid shot himself;
          (b) the Tigers shot him to create propaganda against our government, our heritage and culture — after all, we have a long list of atrocities committed by the Tigers, so we wouldn’t put this past them;
          (c) soldiers shot him in the heat of battle; and
          (d) he surrendered, the soldiers called Colombo to ask what to do with him and a civil servant ordered the execution.

Don’t you think as citizen you ought to know? Don’t you think that knowledge might help you build a better Sri Lanka?

          • 0
            0

As citizens then shouldn’t we also want to know about the thousands of children on both sides killed in this war? What’s so special about this one boy? The only reason he is being singled out is for his PR value as VP’s son. No child deserves to be killed in war, but there are many children far more worthy of justice than the son of a mass murderer (if indeed this is VP’s son). Gamini (above) has cast doubt on our traditional views of paternity, possibly from his own childhood experiences.

          David,
All these theories /assumptions can be solved if the SL Govt. agrees to face an independent investigation. But the Govt. does
is so scared to face any independent inquiry.

Why should they? if the SL people want it, our government will agree. If I claim that in fact you are a prostitute and must submit to a public examination of your genitalia to prove your innocence, are you compelled to agree to avoid being tarred as guilty? The accuser must prove, not call on the accused to prove their innocence.

              David,

These all could be a casual chat while we take account of the after maths. It might be useful to manage the pain.

The image was examined by an independent forensic expert hired by channel 4 and was certified as not tampered. The image and Balachandran have just become very powerful symbol of atrocities that Sri Lanka allegedly committed against its minority citizens. It is not about one incident and one image anymore. It has become about the entire ethnic conflict and the failure of Rajapaksa to follow up on war victory with genuine reconciliation and reforms.

Contesting the authenticity of image can no longer be done in isolation of entire issue. Because Sri Lanka has just lost the battle of narratives. Right now, SL has a serious situation in hand. Even its territorial integrity is threatened!

Btw, you seem to be an expert on universal law, tell me why the SL government is not going to the International court of law to sue the channel 4 if these images were tampered and their accusations are false.

Yes, a body of lies can be more useful than proving the truth. As for CH4’s experts, please. If they want to prove the authenticity of the timeframe and the camera, they can release the metadata. There’s no need for a forensic expert.

“Contesting the authenticity of image can no longer be done in isolation of entire issue. Because Sri Lanka has just lost the battle of narratives. Right now, SL has a serious situation in hand. Even its territorial integrity is threatened!”

So you admit that the truth is unimportant? Thanks for your honesty. Also, do explain how SL’s territorial integrity is threatened. Maybe the GoSL will give you a job ;)

“Btw, you seem to be an expert on universal law, tell me why the SL government is not going to the International court of law to sue the channel 4 if these images were tampered and their accusations are false.”

Why don’t you think and speak like a grown up?

What more evidence are you talking about? Are you looking for a complete video footage of the boy’s captivity and execution by the SL army to prove this?

Do you think that the boy in this pic is under LTTE custody and they (LTTE) shot him?

C’on David, why are you bluffing? Whom are you trying to cover up/protect here? You have already lost your credibility as a military analyst. Everybody here considers you as a buffoon? You are turning into a laughing stock. With this kind of logic, no wonder they are calling you a blockhead weather you get insulted or not.

I wish you had some brains to think rationally before blabbering nonsense in a public forum and making yourself a stupid moron.

          • 0
            0

If I am all the things you claim I am, you must be a bigger buffoon to waste time engaging with me.

But more to the point, you ask what evidence I want? I (and anyone serious about this) would want evidence that the boy was captured alive by the Army. Ie photographic or video evidence of the boy in the company of individuals identifiable as soldiers. Why is this such an intellectual stretch for you?

If I tell you that these pix contain no more evidence against the SL forces than the famous execution clip aired on CH4, will you be shocked? If you’re, you really are as stupid as you accuse me of being. Even in that “incontrovertible piece of evidence” there is no way to say who is shooting who. That is why this evidence will fade away just like that did.

You are clutching at straws. Dig deeper, look further. This is not enough.

The Tamils don’t care who did what. All needs to be exposed and everyone brought to justice. No one can exonerate themselves by blaming others.

Have an open investigation. Acknowledge what happened. Show remorse. Repair the damage. Then move on.

The government, as the legitimate ruling party is the most responsible. And its leaders are accountable. The government killed its own citizens.

Non-governmental entities such as LTTE, where responsible, should be charged, if the leaders are still alive. If you equate the LTTE crimes to the government, you are accepting that there are two nations in that island.

Where any individual has been involved in war crimes, that individual has to be brought to book.

But fundamental to all this is an open investigation.

By denying repeatedly, your bloody hands are not going to be washed clean.

        Come on Siva,

Didn’t even some hierarchy run away and surrendered?.

Who was the brave foot soldier in thongs standing next to the boy after he was supposed to be executed by the special forces?.

And who is this brave cameraman to take multiple shots before and after the execution?

Did Nanthikadal have power generators to light up the scene so evenly for this camera work and even throw a shadow of a person , a male who looks a typical dravidian?.

Why didn’t your mate McRae publish all frames in the SD Card to fix the culprits once and for all.

By the way why don’t you ask Mc Rae and Diaspora to show the Kathankady Massacre also at the Geneva show at least for the audience to have a fair idea of real time photography and digitally doctored versions.

The injuries are the entry wounds and therefore may explain why there is no blood. The exit wounds and the the blood will be on the back. The explanation of the GOSL is as usual the load of rubbish. Even though no evidence may ever surface orders were definitely given to execute on site the entire LTTE hierarchy and their families. The regular armed forces should not be held responsible for these atrocities as they did not shoot this boy without being ordered to do so. They seem to have the right attitude where they actually gave him some thing to eat and kept him protected in a bunker. Knowing the record of the ongoing culture of violence and murder and who the main culpits giving the orders now and protecting the criminals carrying out these orders it is not a mystery as to who gave the orders.

    • 0
      0

This isn’t true. Bleeding occurs from both entry and exit wounds. However, that doesn’t mean that the boy wasn’t shot. VP had no blood on him either. Stop tilting at windmills and look at the actual facts.

        David
Could the person wearing slippers been employed to handle the dead body and he may have cleaned the blood from the wounds?

You seem to be an expert and you were with the Army- so you may be able to answer this.

        • 0
          0

It’s hard to say definitively that a soldier would never be wearing slippers, especially since we don’t know where the pix were taken. IF it is indeed in an Army area, it is unlikely that the boy would have been held and killed in a frontline position, as he would have been a valuable find, and rear area troops could very well have been in slippers.

Similarly, Tamil paramilitaries and other non-Army personnel worked with the troops, and could easily have been wearing slippers. It could be the foot of a civilian. Who know? The slipper neither proves or disproves anything.

As I said before, what is necessary as evidence is proof of the boy alive in Army hands. Without that, these pix are just a waste of time, though I am sure the media will value and milk them.

            0

What kind of evidence will satisfy you?
A full video of the murder? Oh wait, it could have been edited!
Time travelling back to the actual event and seeing it for yourself? oh wait, you could be hallucinating.

This apathetically neutral position is lazy and intellectually dishonest. You would be ridiculed out of academia if you were to apply such poor excuse of a logic.

            • 0
              0

I have already answered your question. There’s no need to time travel or perform any other such fantastical feats, or make great predictions about academia. It is very simple. The same very basic evidence that is required in any murder inquiry. First prove that the victim was last known to have been alive in the presence of the accuser.

You would not care for the facts as I can see from your comments. Picture number two shows on its edge a man in camouflage. There is a distinct difference between the type of camouflage worn by the SLA and the LTTE. I noticed this many years ago and was able to identify which side was shown in any given picture based on this. That camo is not LTTE. Also it appears that the body has been moved hence the absence of any blood. What you are doing here is just being a big bully who thinks he can refute every one else. Of course this is not the kind of evidence that can get a court conviction. No one on this blog givens a damn about absolute proof. We know that no amount of proof is ever going to make any difference anyway. But what we do no is enough to draw a conclusion. So just shut up and go away. By the way even if you think you can come back with another wise ass answer to my post I wont bother replying because it is a waste of my time.

I didn’t realise that there were so many forensic specialists and ballistic experts in Sri Lanka. Are we not glad? There are so many u solved murders in SL. And these guys i am sure would solve every one of them. For eg start with all those journos….

You have gone one step further. Upto now even the master liars of Sri Lanka cooked up a story to tell LTTE raped. You know who are the rape masters. Do you know the Haiti experience the SL soldier doing humanitarian operation on underage school girls. May be LTTE went there too.

      ajith

We know VP had killed many people including children.

Had the army kept VP alive now he would be a key witness to what he did in his life time answerable to people.

Who killed more children than the other should be left to the experts and warrant a comparative study in atrocities.

Two wrongs don’t make it right.

Here was a child who was caught in the madness of war and killed by the Sri Lankan armed forces out of hatred for humanity.

Beware, those who killed this boy are out there heads screwed up roaming freely among the Sinhala people.

Now is the time for the Sinhala people to hide themselves from these criminals. Already 400 members of armed forces have committed suicide and have already started killing their own people.

End of the day Sinhala/Buddhist state has no glory but created more misery by winning the war by any means it felt necessary.

Look at the first two photographs very very
    disapassionately, without a prejudiced mind
    or a pre conceived notion.

One thing emerges clear – the two photographs
of Balachandran were taken in a bunker. No
    dispute on that.

The question is which bunker – Sri Lanka military
    or LTTE.

I can bet my bottom dollar, sorry rupees since I
have no dollars like Nivard Cabraal, that the photgraph
    is from an LTTE bunker.

Why? See the demeanour of the young Balachandran. There
is no fear or stress on his face. He is quite relaxed
and shows no no signs of distress.

Passing that off as a photograph of a military camp therefore
is a puerrille act. Not because I love the Rajapaksas or
the Wickremesinghes. It is because I love the truth and
    want it to prevail.

How can one be so blind….can you not see that face wide eyed and full of anxiety ? Averting the gaze from the camera.
He realises that he is now all alone in the world and ponders about his future. All that is written on that face. In the second one it continues with that empty look while munching on that snack. Totally oblivious to the camera.

Most of the LTTE photos are in groups. I did not see a single LTTE photo of a single cardre taken individually. Also there’s no need for LTTE to take a photo of Balachandran leaving the faces and bodies of other cardres on the side.

This is purely a last supper photo.

Sri Lankan holocaust deniers crawl out of their dark holes in reaction to such statements, just as just as quickly as blow flies reach carrion post mortem.
Decent Sri Lankans and the whole world knows what took place and are slowly coming to terms with the atrocities.
However, the knowledge that the murderers and their troglodyte cronies are still in power and busy denying this holocaust is truly a cause for despair.

Load of rubbish. There is no evidence to confirm that this is an army bunker. The bunker could be equally an LTTE terrorist bunker. Do you expect Prabhakaran’s body guards to place him in a sandy foxhole for protection when the army was closing in. And who gave the kid this posk lookingshawl to cover himself up, lovingly, in a climate that was hot. The boy could have been equally likely to have got shot with a spray of bullets from a gun held by a terrorist or soldiers attacking the bunker. This was war, and the soldiers do not go round to the battlefield with young kids ID cards and birth certificates when they are also fighting for their own lives. Anyone get caught in their line of fire get felled. If Prbhakaran was a good leader he should have thought about the carnage that war would bring to his family as well as to all other Tamil people he was holding against their wishes in the battle field. This is just propaganda and misinformation to cover up the foolishness of the LTTE leaders, using a corpse of a child to curry sympathy. It is just another set of pictures with someone else’s words writtn to the captions to fabricate a story.

Just a few observations on the photos from a photo analyser with no particular interest on the event itself. These are digital photos.

The first two photos are clearly taken inside a bunker reinforced with sand bags and the bunker would easily be the safety Pirabaharan provided to his family. Trying to link the army to this scene would be a difficult job for Mr Mcrae.

The third photo could well be taken on the day, at the same time the bodies of Pirabahran and others trying to escape were recovered. The background detail suggests this.

There are absolutely no forensic or other clues on these photos to associate anyone in the army or government with the possible assasination as Mcrae is trying to do. The photos could easily have been taken days apart. The bullet wounds could well have been inflicted during the escape attempt.

A court of law will throw these images, no matter how emotionally compelling they are, as non-evidence.

Investigator, were not the LTTE bunkers including that of VP’s in the hands of the Govt. Forces? Then what is the difficulty for the Forces to use them, as and when it pleased them? I am afraid your argument does not hold water.

    • 0
      0

      Investigator,

Don’t you know that in final battle for Nanthikandal, the whole area was surrounded by Govt. forces by Air, land and sea.

Nobody was allowed to escape and every Tamil tiger suspect and civilian was strip searched before either killed or sent to refugee camps.

No International agency or monitor was allowed to talk, meet or access to any refugee camp for months after war ended.

So how do you claim this could be a Tiger ploy to discredit Govt. forces.

Your theory is absurd absolute nonsense.

All the Channel 4 video clips were accessed and given by SL Army personnel and more will come out in the coming months.

Also SL army recruitted thousands of labourers and manual support staff to dig bunkers, trenches and dig mass graves and to clean up and other field work. The guy with slippers on may be one of them.

Gen.Sarath Fonseka’s white flag statement say it all.

      Please correct your investigation.

Just listen to BBC news what Gen Sarath Fonseka say. He say it was on 29th May at 10 in the morning that Troops completed the war ending siege on Nanthikandal…….It is around 12 pm, same day that troops informed that they found Balachandran’s Body.

According to forrensic report these camera shots have recorded the shots were taken at the same time.

BBC talked to the organisation which got access to these photos first and they said they got them from a Sri Lankan soldier. May be they have info. on the soldier who gave it to them.

Please listen to today 19th FReb. BBC Sinhala news….Sandeshaya.

Spokesperson for the US State Department, Victoria Nuland responded to recent allegations against Sri Lanka and the death of LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaran’s youngest son by stating that the US support a full accounting for all who have violated international humanitarian laws.

She further went on to confirm that the US will introduce its own resolution on Sri Lanka to the UN Human Rights Council while commending UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay’s report regarding the reconciliation and accountability in Sri Lanka.

Answering a question regarding the allegation surrounding the death of Balachandra Prabhakaran at a daily press briefing, she stated,

We continue to be deeply concerned by allegations of violations of international humanitarian law and human rights in Sri Lanka. At the end of this conflict, we support a full accounting for all who are engaged in acts of violated international humanitarian law. We also welcome the report by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, noting the strong concern about the Government of Sri Lanka’s lack of action to address these longstanding issues of reconciliation and accountability. And as you know, we plan to introduce our own resolution on this into the Human Rights Council .

      Blind Investigator
Can’t you see the boy wearing up the same trouser in captivity as well as after being murdered with both pics taken by same camera???

Oh yeah, you can blabber that Prabakaran’s Son was so poor that he had to wear only that trouser for years..!

The Tamil ‘STRATEGY’ of pitting Fonseka against Rajapakshe has borne fruit now with disgruntled army majors sharing the war crimes of Sinhala army!

Looks like there are still a lot of info left to be auctioned for dollars by the ‘Patriotic’ Sinhala army men loyal to Fonseka.

No one said he was wearing the trousers for years. Why all this exaggeration? Can you not rely on a reasonable argument? as far as i know very few members of osama were killed during the raid.in fact if i remember correctly his son was killed while trying to defend his father.osama’s extended family was given medical treatment and they were flown to their respective countries by the embarassed pakistani authorities.i dont think prabakaran family was given such a royal treatment hence comparing osama last hours and prabakarans last hours are not strictly comparable.

When Osama Bin Laden was killed by US troups, everything was recorded and telecasted live to Pres. Obama and white house staff and later shown in public TV.

Nothing was hidden from Government, public or International community.

Also after Bin Laden was killed, he was taken on board of the US carrier fleet and a muslim buriyal was conducted by an Imam on board of the ship before sending the body to the bottom of the sea.Everything is on record.

Also none of the US drone attacks or any other operations of major enemy targets were hidden from public and almost all the civilian victims and their families were compensated by US government.

Japan,Germany, Vietnam, Iraq, Libya, afganistan, Pakistan…….all these countries that US went and been to war were later compansated both economically, politically and were administered into economic power houses.
There’s a big difference between how US and west fought wars….and how GOSL fought it’s LTTE, JVP and other communal wars and uprisings. eg. Matale skeletons…..etc..

          Please open your eyes.

Callum McCrae gives his game away when he writes of the Sri Lankan army advancing into “the Tamil homelands of the north” (see Director’s Blog on that website) as if this was an army invading a foreign country, which is presumably how he sees it. Interesting also how British taxpayers (who pay for Channel 4) are unknowingly funding political propaganda for a separatist group with terrorist connections in another country!

The world gasps, horrified. But what about the Sinhala nation, how did they respond to this execution of an unarmed mentally disabled child in a country supposedly blessed by the Buddha? An outcry? A protest? A demand for an inquiry? No, all they want to know is who the hell allowed the armed forces to carry Camera Phones, otherwise no one would have known about any of these war crimes. I think this alone sums up the character of the Sinhala Buddhists.

What about Prabhakaran? He shouldn’t have been killed because he was mentally sick too. Prabhakaran was a seriously disturbed person: a psychopath, sociopath, sado-masochist, egomaniac and a meglomaniac. He had torture chambers in the Wanni to satisfy his sick desires. He ordered the killing of over 600 captured poilicemen during the Premadasa regime. He ordered the infants in bordering Sinhala villages to be killed by smashing them on the walls. He ordered the raping of LTTE women cadre who defected with Karuna. [Edited out]

        @Dr.Rajasingham

Why don’t you check this link out. this appeared on Thursday, 14 June 2012.

Major General Kamal Gunaratne had murdered Balachandran on Gotabhaya’s order

LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaran’s 14 year old son Balachnadran Prabhakaran had been killed after surrendering to the army on a direct order of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

Lanka News Web learns that Balachandran had been killed under the supervision of the Commander of the 53rd Brigade Brigadier Kamal Gunaratne.

Balachandran had surrendered to the army near the Nadikadal Lagoon at 7.30 a.m. on May 19, 2009. He had surrendered to a group of eight soldiers led Sergeant Mutubanda from the 4th Vijayaba Infantry Regiment.

Balachandran had said his father, Velupillai Prabhakaran had been shot dead the previous night and that his body was hidden in a shrub near the Nandikadal Lagoon. Mutubanda had then informed the detail to Lieutenant Nalaka from the C Group of the 4th Vijayaba Infantry Regiment.

Nalaka together with another officer named Kirinda and Sergeant Wijesinghe were engaged in a search operation in the Nandikadal Lagoon at the time.

Nalaka had informed the Commanding Officer of the 4th Vijayaba Infantry Regiment Lieutenant Colonel Rohitha Aluvihare that a boy claiming to be Prabhakaran’s son along with two security personnel had surrendered to the army. He had then informed the head of the 53rd Brigade, Brigadier Kamal Gunaratne about the matter through head of the 681 platoon, Lieutenant Colonel Lalntha Gamage.

Following orders, Brigadier Gunaratne together with Lieutenant Nalaka and Balachnadran had gone to the shrub in the Nandikadal Lagoon and shown Prabhakaran’s body to the army.

Lalantha Gamage had then personally taken charge of Balachandran and taken him to Gunaratne.

Gunaratne had then personally interrogated Balachandran.

During the interrogation Balachandran had said his father was killed the previous night when he was caught in the crossfire between the LTTE and security forces.

He had said that his father’s body was hidden and two of his security personnel who had survived the battle the previous night had then surrendered to the army with him.

Balachandran had said that he was with his father in one boat trying to escape the gunfire while his mother and sister were in another. However, he had said his father was shot during the battle and that he was unaware of what had become of his mother and sister.

Balachandran had also revealed that his father and his few remaining security personnel had fought back, but excluding two members of the security detail, everyone had been killed in the gun battle.

Gunaratne had informed all the details he had learnt from Balachandran to the Defence Secretary on his mobile phone. The Defence Secretary had informed all the details to Karuna Amman.

Karuna Amman had told the Defence Secretary that Balachandran should be killed since there was a possibility that he would become the next LTTE leader if he survived and because he would be released from courts since he was under age.

The Defence Secretary had then ordered Gunaratne to personally supervise Balachandran’s killing and to destroy his body.

These details have been revealed by an army officer to a foreign government since he is now being accused over the telecast of footage of Balachandran’s murder in a Channel 4 film. The army officer had said that he did not want to be held accountable for sins committed by others.

At the end of the day, this was the life of a child.
Yes, the son of a terrorist – but was Prabaharan Sri Lanka’s only terrorist? It seems to me that the inflictors of terror are more often wolves in sheeps attire and they roam in many numbers among us.
Gaddafi in all his greed for power & wealth probably never saw the destruction that was coming upon his household.
At the end of the day, this was the life of a child…
It may be useful to pause and consider the fate of our own children – should they pay the price of our wrong doing…

    • 0

Sadly, that must mean that you are the first real saint on the planet as none of us can truly claim to be without wrong having committed various crime in our thoughts and words and sometimes actions (in VP’s case). But who are we to judge who is worse than another and then go to to punish a child for the sins of the father? What a ruthless, sad, COWARDLY bunch of murderers.
All this may be swept under the carpet, but how can we think of moving on (as so many have suggested) when with a nasty attitude like ours we will all pay in full and perhaps with interest for the wrongdoings we have done as a nation – for is that not the foundation of all the religions our nation believes in?

Since this was obviously in the last stages of the war there wouldnt have been LTTE bunkers. VP and others were said to be hiding in the bush. No time to sit, eat and drink with the army closing in. Note he is wearing the same clothes in both pictures. Also both pictures from the same camera. Both cameraman and camera survive the bloody end. LTTE?

Someone suffering from paranoia has killed this child, thinking he could become a rallying point for another bout of violence by the LTTE with balachandran leading it.Ha!ha.Just imagine balachandran leading the LTTE.It will collapse before it starts. It would have been better to have let him live as he would have been a thumping liability for the LTTE.they would have been in a dilemma. They can’t get rid of the liability because he is prabha’s son,at the same time the decisions or lack of decisions he makes will take them nowhere.

I remember seeing a photograph of VPs daughter dead and dressed only in her panty, that was circulated soon after the war. There were also insinuations that she had been raped. What happened to this photograph and the story line ? There was even a photograph of VP, live and kicking, reading a newspaper of a date later than of his death, circulated widely!

What should we believe and what should we not? If we are now instinctlvely skeptical of even what is true, who is to be blamed? The story of the Shepard Boy who cried wolf too many times comes to mind. When the wolves really came, the villagers did not believe him!

We have also seen and experienced enough violence, blood, gore and deaths to be emotionally less vulnerable. We have also been bombarded with propaganda , an alternate name for falsehood, over almost our entire life time. We have been robbed of our innocence and our goodness has been severely abused. None of are the people we were bound to be when we were born. We are all diminished and less human, to various degrees, than we would have otherwise . This is a burden we have to live with till the end of our lives. Let us at least permit the little ones in our midst to grow up without the poisons that we imbibed because of circumstances that overwhelmed us.

Lies of whatever sort ultimately boomerang . The government too is and hasnbeen playing the same game and this will come to haunt it sooner than it imagines. Karma works in inexorable ways!

      Dr RN,
That pic of a ‘dead VP’ you’re looking for is this one: http://oi46.tinypic.com/sqkok4.jpg and it’s almost certainly faked and old.

As for these pix, I feel really sorry that he was killed. It’s obvious that he paid for being his father’s son. And it was pretty well acknowledged in early 2009 that VP and his entourage wouldn’t emerge alive. The question is, were specific orders given to those at the front? If they were, will those who carried out the orders keep their silence?

Given the way that MR has deliberately inflamed the post-war situation for family gain, the way that many senior officers (and other ranks) have been treated, the entrenchment of family rule etc, etc, there’ll be more people willing spill the beans. At some point, even the Chinese will wash their hands of their troublesome clients. Their long-term future is now starting to look less rosy.

I wass searching the Google this morning for photpgraph I referred to in my preceding comment. Although I could not locate the exact photogaph I referred to, I came acroos the following report on the killing of Dwarka- VPs daughter:

        http://www.asiantribune.com/news/2009/12/17/was-duvaraka-tortured-and-killed

Why are these photographs and the related story not being highlighted?

          Mango,

The following links also explain how earlier propaganda efforts from both sides of the war have undermined the truth:

          http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-369439
          http://news.oneindia.in/2010/01/20/prabhakaran-is-alive-ltte-spokesman-tamil-maran.html
          http://www.nation.lk/2009/03/01/militarym.htm

Also search with the words ‘Dwarka Prabaharan in death’on google and you will see a half clad girl supposed to be Dwarka (Different from what I remember seeing some time back). Now the same image is apparently identified as that of Isaipriya.

The big questions are what is the truth, which is the truth, whether a search for truth will reveal the truth or the search for truth will bring forth more untruths. Both sides want us to believe what the propagate is THE truth!

          Dear Dr Narendran,
You’re correct in the misinformation angle of identifying VP’s daughter’s identity. For some reason, she’s been confused with the Isipriya and then the confusion’s been compounded with the original misattribution being repeated across the web.

      RN,
The picture you are referring to was confirmed by Channel 4 as not of Prabaharan’s daughter but of ‘Isaipriya’ who was an LTTE TV presenter a mother of one who was tortured raped and finally executed.
I am surprised that you missed all that as otherwise you seem to be well informed.
